Work Text:
When Chuuya came back from his sudden trip to France, he was told something shocking. The Demon Prodigy left the mafia. Dazai Osamu left Chuuya and there was nothing he could do about it. To Chuuya, he wasn’t missing - no, he was dead.
Chuuya hoped he had misheard his subordinate, what did he mean Dazai was alive? What did he mean that he was in their basement as they spoke? No. Dazai died 4 years ago. At least in his heart, he was dead.
Chuuya had to work with Dazai today, Chuuya thought it was strange, working with a dead guy was completely absurd! Yet, it was given to him by the boss's orders so there was nothing he could do.
1 missed call turned into 5, 5 turned into 11, and 11 turned into 17. After a while, Chuuya muted his phone. He didn’t want to talk to the dead.
Chuuya went to work as normal the next day and was sent to his boss’s office. Strange he thought, as he walked into the lift that’d take him into the isolated top floor. He slowly opened the door to be greeted by Mori’s concerned face and his sister standing in the corner of the room, face sullen and sad.
Mori ushered him to sit down as Kouyou turned her face away, and Chuuya followed the orders he was given swiftly. “What did you want to talk about sir?” Chuuya looked up at his superior in genuine confusion. He could hear a soft sob coming from Kouyou’s direction. Chuuya stood up in seconds defensively, his eyes shooting to his sister. “Okay, what the fuck is going on?!” Chuuya yelled, confused and frustrated about the situation.
Mori opened his mouth and the words that came from his pale lips shook the small executive to the core. Nothing could have prepared him for what he was about to hear.
“Dazai died last night, his last attempt followed through. I’m sorry Chuuya-kun.”
Chuuya felt as if his whole sense of reality had faltered. He began to feel hot tears fall down his cheeks as he felt his knees give in from beneath him. It was as if gravity itself was against him. He felt stiff, stiff, and stupid. So fucking stupid. Now Dazai was dead for real and there was nothing he could do about it.
I’ll see you soon… partner…
