“Can I open my eyes yet?” Trina wonders. Spencer has been carrying her bridal style for the last two minutes which she doesn’t mind. Spencer had picked her up from the dorms to take her over to her family's for Thanksgiving dinner. On the way over there, Spencer had taken a detour. He'd insisted on showing her a surprise which was why she was rocking this blindfold over her eyes. But her patience had run thin and she was craving her Aunt Gia's famous sweet potato pie.
“Not yet, baby. And wasn’t it you who said good things come to those who wait?” Spencer adjusts Trina in his arms as he uses his leg to kick a door open.
“Oh now you listen to me?”
“You’re the only one I do. I’ve been told I’ve got a thick skull.”
“Hey, I only thought it!” Trina quips back. The two’s laughter fills the hallway. After Spencer crosses the threshold of a doorway with Trina in his arms, he sets her down. Spencer flicks on the lights before standing behind Trina, wrapping his arms around her waist. It hadn’t been less than 48 hours since their argument that Spencer was losing his mind. Not hearing her voice, her laugh--hell just not being near her drove him mad.
Could you blame him for taking every opportunity he could to hold her in his arms? He had gotten a peek of what his life would be like without Trina in it and it was hell. None of this worked or made any sense without Trina Robinson. He hated that he took it all for granted. His talk with Trina about priorities and where his life was going got him thinking. He started talking to Uncle Valentin about getting involved in the Cassadine business. While he was learning the ropes of the company, he would start taking business classes at PCU.
Spencer ever so slowly unties the blindfold around Trina’s eyes. “Surprise!” Spencer whispers into Trina's ear. When Trina opens her eyes, Spencer’s heart leaps out of his chest as her brown eyes flit around the room. Excitement and joy dance around in Trina's eyes. This was so worth it, he thinks as he admires Trina.
Trina spins around, taking in every inch of Spencer's new apartment. She almost couldn't believe it, but the adorably smug grin tugging at Spencer's lips convinced her otherwise. “Is this your—”
“Yes.“
“It’s not—“
“Nope.“
“When did you—”
“Last night.”
"It's really beautiful, Spencer."
"I'm glad you like it," Spencer replies quickly. "I'm hoping you'll keep me company here 98% of the time."
"Where'd the 2% go?"
"Well, as much as I'd love to have you all to myself, Joss would have my head if you never went back to the dorms."
"True," Trina chuckles. It was a studio apartment that was close to PCU. It was spacious enough and looked really comfy. Trina's gaze couldn't help but to drift to the air mattress that was right behind her. Barely anything else was unpacked in the apartment but the air mattress. Trina bites her lip to stifle the giggle that so desperately wants to escape her. “Do not tell me that this is the only thing you unpacked?"
“Well, I wanted to christen the place as soon as possible. Priorities, right?” Spencer grins conspiratorially and wiggles his eyebrows at her.
Trina laughs and rolls her eyes. As Spencer edges closer to her, Trina sprints away towards the door. She swings the door wide open, craning her neck outside into the hallway and looking back and forth.
“What are you looking for?” Spencer asked, his voice full of amusement.
Trina comes back inside, closing the door behind her. She leans her back against the front door and just shrugs. “Oh nothing. Just wanted to check to see if the hallway had a familiar brunette ponytail with a baby on her hip instead of using that golden stroller your grandmother bought her." The two of them stare at each other before bursting into laughter. "No, seriously why doesn't she use that stroller?"
"How else would she remind someone that she's a good mother?"
Trina gives him a quick peck as she closes the distance between them. “Sorry, babe, I'm done with my Esme quips now."
“I deserve it since you’ve been dealing with this since March.”
“Well, I am thankful that you are trying.” Trina lays her hands on his chest before pushing up on her tip toes to kiss him again. Before she can say more, Spencer breaks away from her mouth to pepper kisses along her neck. Trina closes her eyes and tries to remember how to form words. “And I…am v-very…grateful that you have your own place.” Finally. She can't describe the euphoric feeling inside of her that Spencer wasn't just saying words to please her. He meant it and he was serious about the two of them building a future together.
Spencer threads their fingers together. “Well, I am thankful for you. Thankful that you love me just for me, never having any ulterior motives and for always wanting the best for me. For seeing the best in me when everyone else could only see my mistakes. Your faith in me helped me to believe in myself.”
Trina has tears in her eyes and her hand flies to her chest to clutch her heart. “Spencer—“
“I’m thankful that you’ve let me love you. I’m just thankful that I have you in my life. I know a lot of people in your life disapprove of us, but I know one thing for sure: I want you in my life. I'll fight to be in your life. And despite my screwups lately, I’m so damn thankful you still want me in yours.”
“I’m thankful for you too, Spencer. I felt like I was just walking through life after my dad revealed to me that he faked his death. I felt like everyone was trying to manage my emotions and feelings instead of just letting me feel what I felt. You’ve never done that with me. You have always let me be me.” Spencer’s tears in his eyes matches Trina’s now. “I’m thankful that you came back to Port Charles.” Trina grins slyly. “Even if it did end up with fake blood spilling on me—“
“Wasn’t meant for you—“
“Not the point,” Trina says with a chuckle. “Do you know many times I looked up while I strolled through the park, hoping I’d see you in the trees again? That was the best part of my summer. Just being in your presence makes me smile and laugh so much that my stomach hurts. You just always know what I need.” Just like that day in the gallery when Cyrus showed up. Spencer knew that Trina needed to say her piece and knew when she reached her breaking point. He was there to hold her in his arms when she broke down in tears. She never felt the need to hide from him. Spencer gave her strength in the darkest of times.
Spencer clears his throat as he unbuttons Trina's jacket. “I love you, Trina Robinson.” His voice is a whisper, soft and low as though he was saying a prayer. With a love as special as the one he has with Trina, her very name is sacred to him.
Every time her name rolled off his tongue, it was as though he was saying her name for the very first time. Everything with Spencer felt new and beautiful. The last of her jacket buttons unclasps and her jacket falls to her feet. “I love you too, Spencer Cassadine.” Trina sighs as Spencer caresses her cheek. “We’re going to be late to Thanksgiving dinner…” Thanksgiving was the last thing on her mind.
Spencer scoops up Trina into his arms. “I have my dinner right here. Besides, I don't think your family could hate me anymore than they already do."
“True, but this Thanksgiving could turn things around. First time for everything, right?"
Spencer smiles. "First time falling in love too. Anything is possible." Spencer lays Trina gently down on the air mattress, threading his fingers through hers. "Happy Thanksgiving, Trina," he says quietly against her lips.
"Happy Thanksgiving, Spencer!"
