Work Text:

A sigh escaped Aira as he flopped onto the bed. It had been another long day in a long week, and he wanted nothing more than to take a nap right now. He was about halfway there when his phone chimed.

Aira rolled over and reached for his phone, propping himself up against the pillows. His eyes opened a bit wider when he saw who had texted him. It was Kohaku.

K: Hey, Rabu-han. How are you?

A: Tired, honestly. I’ve been busy all week, and today was no different.

K: Should I leave you alone then? I was going to ask if you wanted to meet me at that café in the shopping district, but if you’re tired you should rest.

The mention of the café they frequented all but banished Aira’s exhaustion. Kohaku was probably right that he should rest, but…

A: You’re probably right, but that sounds really nice right now. We haven’t seen each other all week… I miss you.

K: I miss you, too. If you’re up for it, I can meet you there in 20 minutes?

A: Sounds good to me. See you soon, Kohakucchi. ♡

A smile now on his face, Aira left his phone on the bed and headed to the bathroom. He didn’t have time to go through his usual routine, so he’d just brush his hair before leaving. Once he’d done that and changed into more comfortable clothes, he grabbed his things and left the dorm.

As he walked down the stairs and out of the building, Aira hummed to himself. It really felt like ages since he and Kohaku had hung out. They’d texted and called, sure, but it wasn’t the same as actually seeing each other and spending time together. It couldn’t be helped, though- both Alkaloid and Crazy:B had been getting more work lately, so they just didn’t have time. A smile touched Aira’s face as he thought about seeing his boyfriend’s face again.

Aira spotted Kohaku waiting for him as he neared the café. When Kohaku noticed Aira, he waved. Aira waved back, crossing the street to join him.

“You made it.” Kohaku greeted him with a smile. “I wasn’t sure if ya wanted to sit inside or outside, so I waited for ya to get here.”

“You’re so sweet~ Thank you.” Aira resisted the impulse to peck Kohaku’s cheek, just in case anyone was watching them. “It is chilly today. If there’s space inside, it might be more comfortable for us.”

“You got it. Let’s go then.” Kohaku turned toward the door, holding it open for Aira.

Aira thanked him as he walked through, hearing the bell tinkle behind them as the door closed. The pair looked for an empty table, eventually finding one near the back. It was relatively quiet today and much warmer than it was outside. They sat down, ordered their usual, and turned to chatting as they waited.

“I can’t believe it’s only been a week.” Aira lamented. “It feels like I haven’t seen you in forever!”

“I’m glad it’s not just me.” Kohaku laughed. “I guess that’s what happens when you’re close to someone. You miss ‘em more.”

“Hmm, maybe. I wouldn’t change anything, though.” Aira gave Kohaku’s hand a squeeze under the table. “Every second we do get to spend together is precious to me.”

Kohaku smiled wordlessly, pink dusting his cheeks. Before he can reply, their food arrives. Kohaku takes a sip of his tea before speaking again.

“Ah, I didn’t mention it earlier, but I have somethin’ for ya.” He set the cup down and reached into his bag, producing a small wrapped box from it.

“For me?” Aira echoed. “Aww, Kohakucchi, you didn’t have to get me anything.”

“‘Course I did.” Kohaku smiled and handed the box to Aira. “You can open it now if ya want.”

Hesitating for a moment, Aira undid the ribbon before opening the box. Inside it was another smaller box, like the kind jewelry is usually stored in. He took it out, opening it to reveal a pair of earrings with yellow gemstones set in them.

“They’re beautiful.” Aira said after a moment. “Are these gems…?”

“Topaz, your birthstone.” Kohaku confirmed. “Thought it made sense for a birthday present. They match the ones you gave me.”

Birthday present…? Aira’s eyes went wide as realization dawned on him. Oh no… Is that today?!

“What’s wrong?” Kohaku asked, noticing the shift in his partner’s mood.

“I… I completely forgot that was today.” Aira whispered, almost inaudible. “I’ve been so busy I didn’t realize-! I had planned to ask you to spend the day together anyway, but I’ve been so focused on work I-”

A gentle squeeze of his hand cuts off Aira’s rambling.

“It’s alright. “Kohaku reassured him with a soft smile. “It happens. Honestly, I’m not surprised with how much you’ve been doin’ lately.” He paused. “I know it’s your special day, but can I make a selfish request?”

Aira nodded, still recovering from the outburst. He trusted Kohaku. Whatever he’d ask was sure to be reasonable.

“Would you spend the rest of the day with me?” Kohaku asked, for once looking a little shy. “That way maybe you can relax a bit.”

Aira knew Kohaku needed the rest, too, but he also knew he wouldn’t admit it. A smile touched his face again as warmth filled his heart. He had the best boyfriend in the world.

“Of course I will. I can’t think of a better way to spend my birthday.” Aira laughed, feeling much better now.

“We’ll make the best of the rest of your day.” Kohaku smiled back at Aira.

After finishing their meals and paying, the pair headed back to the dorms, standing close enough that no one could see them holding hands. Once they were inside, they walked down the first floor hallway to Kohaku’s room. Apparently his roommate was out for work too, so they’d have the room to themselves for a while. They chatted for a while longer about whatever came to mind, eventually giving in to exhaustion and cuddling together on Kohaku’s bed. As he was drifting into the depths of sleep, Aira heard a soft whisper meant just for him.

“Happy birthday, Rabu-han.”

Notes:

Happy birthday, Aira!! Had to do a little self indulgent Kohaai fic for today. I hc they have matching birthstone earrings that were gifts from each other, which is what that one line is referencing. Maybe I'll write the other half of that for Kohaku's birthday next year.

Thank you for reading! I hope you enjoyed the fic. ^^
