Work Text:

The whole day had felt like a dream for Konata. First, she and her friends won tickets to go see a concert, and that concert just so happened to be fronted by her favourite band. Not just that, but, despite the fact that there was a guy blocking Konata's view at first, Kagami was actually willing to swap seats with her, the taller girl allowing her to see the concert in all its glory. There was something about that gesture that caused Konata's heart to flutter.
From that point onward, every time she looked at Kagami, her heart would skip a beat, maybe two, and a faint pinkish tint would appear on the bluenette's cheeks – not prominent enough for anyone to see, but enough for her to feel the sudden warmth on her cheeks.

The third thing is what helped her to connect the dots together in her head.

After the concert had wrapped up, Konata and her friends took the train home, Konata herself being noticeably quieter than usual, which Kagami herself had pointed out. On the train, she had spent the first bit and a half of the train ride listening to a CD that a friend had lent her, allowing herself to idly get lost in its sound, when, all of a sudden, she had felt something – or, rather, someone – gently rest itself on her shoulder. She momentarily turned to see what it was, and upon seeing an all-too-familiar lock of lavender hair, reflexively hit the stop button on her CD player and nearly threw off her headphones, her heart going at a million miles per hour as her cheeks burned as hot as the surface of the sun.
It was Kagami. Kagami Hiiragi, her best friend, the girl she annoyed to no end, but who secretly cherished and appreciated every moment with her; the girl who saw her that day in middle school, friendless, only kept company by her endless supply of manga, and went out of her way to be friends with her, stopping any bully or mean-spirited comment in its tracks; the girl who is, more or less, the reason why she has all the friends she has now, asleep on her shoulder.

It was at that moment that Konata discovered that Kagami was also the girl that she loved and cherished the most. Kagami was the one who Konata would be more than willing to spend the rest of her life with.

Almost instinctively, she wrapped her arms around the girl, allowing the lavendernette to return the hug in her sleep. Despite the fact that Konata's heart threatened to burst out of her chest with how fast it was beating, she couldn't help but feel a sense of solace and comfort as she embraced the girl, a sense of warmth resonating in her chest, a sharp juxtaposition to the rush of intense emotions she had felt earlier.
Konata looked at Kagami, noticing how cute she looked as she slept, and how peaceful she seemed. They had hugged a few times, but never like this – most of the time, Kagami would get flustered, even if it was just the two of them, reluctant to admit that she secretly cherished every shred of affection the both of them had. She stared long and hard at Kagami's cheek, as she suddenly felt the inescapable urge to kiss Kagami. She didn't care how. She just wanted to show the girl how much she loved her, whether it was in the palace of dreams of not.

It wouldn't hurt to just... give her a quick peck now, would it? Konata had thought, giving into her temptation and giving Kagami a tender peck on the cheek.

Immediately, Konata went beet red, hugging her tighter. To make matters worse, Kagami had started rambling in her sleep.
"Konata... don't go..." She mumbled, groggily, now having wrapped her arms around Konata. "I... I love you, Konata..."
Having noticed that Kagami was very clearly smiling like an idiot, Konata felt as if though she had nearly passed out, returning the sleeping girl's hug (was she even asleep at this point?).
"I'm not goin' anywhere, Kagamin..." She replied, in a soft tone of voice. "I love you too..."
After having said that, she let out a breath she didn't realise she was holding in, realising what she had done.

She had just confessed to Kagami. While she was sleeping.

Konata sighed. She was completely and utterly fucked.

Eventually, after what felt like genuine eons, the train arrived at its destination. Tsuaka and Miyuki left first, whilst Konata had to carry Kagami, bridal-style, as the girl was still very much fast asleep. Fortunately for her, Kagami was relatively light, so carrying her was no big thing.
As she stepped out of the train, noticing the coolness of the air and the way the stars idly twinkled in the night sky, she followed Tsukasa and Miyuki, remembering that Kagami had agreed to have a sleepover with Konata tonight.

"So... see you tomorrow, then?" Tsukasa asked. "You'll keep my sister safe, right?"
Konata chuckled.
"Ah, don'tcha worry, she'll be fine!" Konata replied, a smirk on her face. "What, did'ya think I was gonna eat her?"
"Oh, no, nothing like that!" Tsukasa shook her head violently.

Eventually, Tsukasa headed home with Miyuki, Konata arriving at her house moments later, her dad already fast asleep. She was quick to head to her room, momentarily setting Kagami down on top of her bed as she got to work, setting up an area for Kagami to sleep in. She had considered using a sleeping bag, but decided that such a thing would be too harsh for Kagami, quickly getting to work setting up a makeshift bed. She searched her room top-to-bottom for the softest blankets and comfiest pillows she could find, wanting to make Kagami as comfortable as possible.

She opened her wardrobe, fetching every one of her best pillows, as well as her best blankets, gently laying Kagami down on the floor, having decided to construct a pillow fort – an art she was highly skilled in. Using her carefully crafted techniques and the finest materials she could use, she set up a pillow fort for the girl, making sure it was as comfortable as possible. When all was said and done, she tucked her in, planted a kiss on her forehead, and crawled into her own bed, falling quickly into a deep sleep.

Morning came quick, and Konata woke, rubbing her eyes due to the sunlight shining in through her window. As she came to her senses, she noticed that the pillow fort was empty, a feeling of sadness filling her soul.
Did Kagami leave? Konata wondered, briefly looking around, but finding no sign of the lavendernette anywhere, assuming she had gone home. She began to wonder what she had done wrong with the pillow fort, questioning if she had actually made one that was good enough-

"Mornin', Konata..." A voice beside her yawned.

She turned over, noticing that Kagami had crawled into her bed, and was still hugging her, arms wrapped around her waist.
"Kagami...?" She asked, confused. "Wait... why did you go in my bed? Was the pillow fort bad or-"
"This is more comfy than any pillow fort in the world," Kagami replied.
Konata shot upright, questioning everything as she stared back at Kagami. Did she hear everything that she said the previous night? Was she secretly awake the entire time?
"Kagami... were you-" She gulped. "Were you... awake... during the train ride?"
Kagami didn't say a word, only giving a smirk to Konata.
"Well... I guess I'll put it this way," She replied, scratching the back of her neck.

Kagami hugged Konata as tightly as she could, pressing a loving kiss to her cheek, causing the bluenette to go completely red, returning the hug. At once, she whispered in her ear,

"I love you too, Konata."

And, like that, it was as if everything Konata had dreamed of came true in the span of a single night.
