Harry instantly felt awkward.
They stood in Diagon Alley. Neither, obviously, knew what to do.
"Professor," Harry tried.
"No longer a Professor, Lord Potter," Severus growled.
"Potions Master Snape," Harry tried.
"Good Day," Severus said curtly.
"Wait!" Harry called. "Please." The last was soft.
"We have said all there is to say," Severus growled.
"I'd like to apologize..."
Severus whirled. "Now? Here?" he hissed. "No." He stood up straighter and started to walk away.
"There's something you should know!" Harry blurted out.
Severus turned, came close and hissed, "Never speak to me again!
Severus apparated away, leaving Harry alone. Again.
Harry thought of the owl messages that had been returned, unopened. The futile attempts of trusted others to reach out, all rebuffed.
Tired of trying, Harry decided it was time to give up. He had done what he could.
A burden lifted, Harry went home.
"Papa! Did you get the owl treats?" five-year-old Iline asked eagerly.
"I'm sorry sweetheart, I was distracted," Harry said softly. "Tomorrow. And you can come with me."
"Hurrah!"
Thankfully, it was relatively easy to distract a young child.
That night, Harry sat by Ilene's bed and thought, You look so much like your other father.
