Work Text:

Sundays are the busiest time of the week with the whole Burns family returning to the island and enjoying a dinner together. In the time that it began, their numbers have increased with new Rescue Bots and non-Rescue Bots joining over time along with the Burns welcoming their first grandchild.

So in the early mornings, Charlie spent most of the time preparing for dinner later on and that’s where he is right now. The only one that’s up this early is Cody, who’s sitting at the table with a textbook opened for some Cybertorn course that he has been taking. His son is quite focused on it and barely notices that his coffee has gotten cold.

Charlie has finished making his coffee, along with another cup, before sitting down next to Cody.

The Academy is going smoothly from what Cody and Heatwave talked about; the recruits had long since been able to join them for Sunday dinner. Kade and Harley have long since moved out of the Firehouse to their own townhouse on the island. Charlie had helped them move in there and even set up his granddaughter’s nursery. Both of them always make time to come visit, if there isn’t an emergency.

Blades’ Medical Centre up north had a few hiccups and issues but seem to have worked itself out, Dani has been teaching out on the Mainland with Taylor.

Boulder and Graham have been doing fine work out at Baranova’s North Pacific Lab; both make sure to call at least once a week before Sunday but it feels like those calls are coming more distance.

Chase and Cody are the only ones still here at the firehouse. In the beginning, Charlie tries getting Cody to leave the island and explore everything that this world has to offer but Cody is stubborn and decides to take online courses so he can focus on the command center and the Academy.

Charlie couldn’t help but look over at his son – now twenty-five and having seen more of the world than even Woodrow did – and realized that Cody didn’t really need him all that much more. At the back of his mind, he wants his kids to not grow up and just stay how they are but another part of him – the louder part – wants to see them become the amazing human beings that he knows they can be.

“What’s for dinner?” Cody asks, closing his book and setting it off to the side. “Something as always?”

Charlie chuckles at the face his son makes at the cold coffee before sliding the fresh one over. Cody gives his thanks and takes a sip, looking quite happy and so unworried about everything running through Charlie’s mind at the moment.

“I was thinking that maybe you would like to come up with the menu?”

It’s something that Charlie has been thinking about since Cody is here the most out of everyone. His youngest knows everyone so well but Charlie is sure that Cody can come up with something that works for everyone.

“You sure?” Cody narrows his eyes and stares right at Charlie. “This whole dinner thing is your thing, I don’t want to take that away from you.”

Charlie had a long talk with Ezra one night during a dinner between the Greene and Burns family. Cody and Cece were too busy with helping Anna make their meal to pay much attention to the two of them. Frankie had long since moved off the island to work on her projects, though she always tries to make time to call her family at least.

Both of them know that they aren’t getting any younger and someday they’ll need to pass things on to their children. Even as small as Sunday dinner, Charlie wants to make sure that his children are ready for anything.

“I’m sure, Cody. I want your help with this one.”

Cody does agree and even seems excited to be able to help. The phone rings – showing that it’s Kade – and Cody hops up to go tell his brother the news. Charlie couldn’t help smiling at the sound of Cody being so excited to be able to help out with this. The whole Burns family loves to help people, no matter how small the task is.

Early mornings on Sunday tend to be the best times for Charlie to prepare but it’s also a nice time to just remember to live in the moment.

Notes:

And the first of many one-shots for this series have been created.

Today's one-shot is the hardest one to create because I have no idea what to write. That's why this one kinda sucks a little. However, I am excited for the next few days because I have so many ideas (and we even go back to the Teba and his family from the Father's Day Week event that I did a while back).

Hopefully, you enjoyed and have a wonderful day/night!
