It was the weekend after final exams and we all decided to head to the karaoke spot to celebrate. I had just gotten to the corner when I spotted Kacchan. As always, he had his usual grump of an expression. Well, until he turned and looked over at me. For just a moment I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. I could just be mistaken, but his features always seemed to soften. But those thought quickly went out the window once he folded his arms and tapped his foot. “What you staring at, nerd?”
I shook my head as I finished walking the rest of the way to meet him. “Nothing, Kacchan.” He just sucked his teeth as he started walking away. It was mostly silent between us, until I spotted a lone dragonfly. “Wow. I didn’t think I would see one of those this early in the day.”
“Uh?” I looked over to Kacchan just in time to witness a soft smile cross his face. It feels like forever since I seen one of those. “It’s a oniyanma. We haven’t seen those in a long while.” For a moment I was taken aback when he said we. But I just couldn’t help smile as I stepped closer to him.
“Remember when we tried to catch one to bring to class?”
“Yeah. And you fell into the pond like an idiot.”
“Hey!” Kacchan looked over his shoulder at me, and I was slightly disappointed to see the smile was gone. I know I shouldn’t hope for the impossible. But it would have been nice. “Uh?”
“What?”
“How do you know it’s a oniyanma from this distance?” The way a shade a pink started to cross Kacchan’s face was cute. Especially when he’s was trying to avoid looking at me. At that, I couldn’t help step even closer to him. I know Kacchan is super smart, but that dragonfly is so far away. I barely was able to see it for a brief moment until we slowly got closer. “Kacchan, come on. Tell me. Please. How did you know?”
“Back off, nerd.” Kacchan made the motion to shove me away, but it didn’t have the same force as always. I wonder why. Especially when his hands just seemed to stay on my shoulders.
“Kacchan?”
“I…” That’s when he turned away and started walking off again. I quickly tried to catch up. “It doesn’t matter. Damn nerd.”
“You’re a nerd, too, Kacchan.”
“Shut up!” I couldn’t stop giggling all the way to the station. Even when Kacchan kept trying to get me to stop.
