Work Text:

“Every time I look around this room my eyes they tend to fall on you and I confess, nothing but you makes sense…”

“Oh, I love this song!” Danton said to no one in particular as he worked on rolling out the sugary dough he'd prepared.

He was pretty proud of this batch. It was just the right consistency, thick but not stiff, and littered with red and green sprinkles, a small addition he'd made to his own tried and true recipe. He knew it would count for something special.

There wasn't anything inherently special about this batch, as Christmas was still a couple weeks away. The really special part came down to the person he was making it for. None other than the love of his life, Nina. She'd been working a lot as of recently, and she deserved to come home to something nice. Sugar cookies were always a welcome treat for her when things got tough.

He felt himself go into a small daze as he thought about spending another spectacular holiday with the one he loved the most, only snapping out when the oven beeped, a signal that it had preheated fully. He laughed away his dreamy thoughts, setting the rolling pin down and grabbing a few festive cookie cutters from the drawer next to him. From there, the process was as simple as stamping the cutouts hard enough to indent the dough into cute shapes, placing them on the trays he'd prepped, and shipping them off to the oven.

Once everything was said and done, he found he had about 20 minutes to burn through before he could retrieve his sugary bounty. He decided to scroll through some assorted media he'd saved, mostly ridiculous memes of nothing in particular. Just as he was going through one of his favorite pictures, when a text came through to his message app. And who should it be from but the very woman he was currently baking for. Nina.

He felt his heart skip a beat as he tapped the message pop up, instantly transporting him to his text app. The message was simple. Deviously simple.

“Hello darling. How are you?”

Danton could only giggle to himself as he read it over a few times, thinking through what to respond with. He quickly typed out a message that he was sure she'd love.

“Hi sweetie! I'm doing okay! Making something sweet for when you get home! ❤️❤️❤️”

Just as sweet as his cookies, if not sweeter. It took a minute for Nina to respond, but it was well worth it when he saw what came back.

“Going to wrap up here in a second. See you soon, dear heart.”

Danton couldn't help but let out a small excited squeal at the notion. His sweetheart would be home soon and he'd get to see that lovely face of hers again! Setting his phone down, he clapped excitedly for a few seconds, his pupils morphing into hearts behind his goggle lenses.

BEEEEEP!

The sudden noise of the timer shocked him out of his lovestruck stupor, bringing him back to the reality that he had sweets treats cooking just next to him. He hurriedly put on his oven mitts, opening the door to the oven and retrieving both of the trays he'd set in just a little while ago.

The smell of vanilla emanating from the cookies was stronger than he predicted, and stayed with him for a couple seconds before he got enough sense back to turn off the oven.

KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK!

Just as he set down the trays, the telltale sign of a visitor was heard from behind the front door. Danton hurriedly took off the gloves, nearly tripping a few times as he speedwalked over to open the door. He wasn't at all surprised when he turned the handle and found Nina at the door, but he still couldn't help but squeal softly and embrace his wife in a tight hug.

“Honey! I'm so glad you're back!” He said excitedly.

“Darling, you always act like I've been gone for ages when I come home. You know I always return at the end of the day.”

“Doesn't make the hours you're gone any less lonely! But I digress, please, come in! I've got something for you!”

Quicker than lightning, he let go of her and sped off back to the kitchen, leaving her to follow him soon after she had locked the door behind her and took off her shoes. The lingering scent of vanilla hung loosely in the air as she walked to the dining island near the main counter area.

“Oh, I smell vanilla! Let me guess, you made cookies?”

“Yep! I even put sprinkles in the batter this time!”

“Ooo, fun!”

Danton easily pried two cookies off of the sheet with a spatula, handing one to Nina and biting into the one he'd taken for himself.

“I see you gave me a star cookie again. Why do you always give me these ones specifically?”

“Cuz you're brighter than any star that ever existed! You know this!”

“I know. But I still like hearing it.”

She took a bite of her own confection, her eyes lighting up when she tasted that familiar flavor. It certainly was a treat to taste it again after the day she'd had.

“Excellent work, my dear. It tastes heavenly.”

“Enough to get you in the Christmas spirit?”

“Hmmm, not quite. I think I'll need a few more batches before I'm at that level of jolly.”

“Hehe, of course, my sweet.”

And thus, the holidays had officially kicked off for the two of them. They were together, they had cookies and that was all they needed.

Notes:

Sorry if the pacing is a bit all over the place with this one. Kinda rushed to get it out tonight. Still I liked writing it quite a bit, and I hope you all enjoyed reading it!

Oh! Also, the song played at the beginning is called "Under the Mistletoe" by Kelly Clarkson. It's a really good song.
