Hawke sighed. “When you said window shopping, I was thinking something much less literal.”
“You said someone broke your window-” Aveline retorted. She scowled at a gang of boys passing by. They hurried away.
“I didn't mean-” Hawke paused to take a deep breath. “Someone rigged the window locks closed. The glass is fine.”
“What if you want to open it?”
“It's winter, Aveline.” Hawke put her hands up placatingly. “I'm sure I'll get it fixed before it's nice out.”
“But we-”
Hawke turned around and pointed back where they'd come. “Why don't we go look at the decorations downtown?”
