First Snow

Summary:

Just a tiny little behind the curtain ficlet. Jared and Jensen sharing a quiet moment on their porch, snuggled up by the fire.

Work Text:

Jensen shifts on the porch swing, Jared pulling him closer against his side, tugging the heavy duvet up higher over their shoulders as the temperature drops. The sky, stretching out impossibly far ahead of them is streaked with purple and orange, the crisp late autumn day bleeding into night.

Jared adds a heavy knitted blanket over the pair of them too, feeling the heat from the log fire by their feet, watching the flames reflect in a mesmerising gold over Jensen’s freckled cheeks.

“You warm enough?” Jared whispers against Jensen’s temple, leaving his lips to linger for a featherlight kiss and Jensen hums in agreement. There is a light wind, playing with the yellow and red treetops in the garden, sending the brightly coloured leaves dancing to the ground and for a long moment they sit in perfect comfortable silence just watching the evening wrap itself around them.

Jensen’s hands find their way to Jared’s waistband under the pile of covers and blankets, and Jared smiles as he feels curious fingertips travel up under his sweatshirt and t-shirt, caressing gingerly over his abs. Jensen’s hands are surprisingly warm, and when Jared glances down at his co-star he sees rosy cheeks that he knows match his own. Jensen tilts his head up, tip of his nose rubbing against Jared’s in an eskimo’s kiss and Jared feels his heart swell in his chest with a happiness so pure he could burst.

The fire crackles in its pit and the wind tugs lightly at the flames as they rise a little, licking up towards the sky. The two men watch in silence as heavy, purple clouds pull closer and Jensen’s warm hands squeeze Jared’s waist lovingly, the older man resting his head on the taller man’s shoulder. The sweet gesture and the love flowing from the simple touch has Jared’s skin breaking out in goosebumps and Jensen smooths his fingertips over the pebbled skin, lifting his head for a second to place a warm, soft kiss on Jared’s stubbly jaw. Jared can feel the flutter of Jensen’s impossibly long eyelashes as he dips his head down to rest again and he wraps his own arms tighter around the slightly shorter man.

“Can you believe this year is coming to an end?” Jensen says with a soft sight and Jared smiles.

“No, it’s really flown by… but I also can’t wait to find out what is yet to come,” the taller man adds, his voice gravelly and deep with emotion and Jensen smiles up at him.

“Me too.”

“You sure you’re not getting cold?” Jared presses, forehead pinched in a worried frown all of a sudden and Jensen laughs.

“With my personal giant furnace of a boyfriend clinging to me for dear life? I’m great, Jared.”

Jared’s stomach flips happily at the word boyfriend. They’ve been together for a long time, but his heart never tires of hearing it. He secretly dares to think ‘husband’ instead sometimes, just to feel his entire being lighting up from the inside, his skin tingling and his heart singing. He bites his lip, resting his chin protectively on top of Jensen’s hair.

One day, he thinks. One day.

The tips of their noses are starting to turn a soft pink in the cool night and Jared can feel his face heating up with more than just the cold weather as Jensen’s fingers under his shirt traveler higher, to brush over a taught and perky nipple. There is a warm rumble of laughter rising through Jared at the cheeky touch and Jensen loves the fact that they’re pressed so closely together that he can feel the vibrations of it.

Like the little sound of happiness has set something bigger in motion both men watch with wide eyes as perfect snowflakes start to fall gracefully from the sky before them. Jensen gasps a little in awed surprise and Jared loves him a little bit more, feeling his heart expand to make room for another shared memory.

White crystals rain down, floating in the air, swirling down towards the ground below and the flames of the bonfire meet the wintery scene, fire kissing the delicate snowflakes. The glow dances in Jared’s eyes and Jensen burrows closer, breathless over the view.

“It’s so beautiful,” he whispers and Jared nods.

They stay out there on the porch for a long time, just watching the light dusting of winter settle across the leaves covered lawn, floating down from the sky. Jared gives the porch swing a light push and they’re rocked gently as they watch the evening turn into night. As the sky grows darker above them, Jared can feel Jensen’s form going still and heavy against him.

“Hey…” he whispers, rousing the dozing man. “Let’s go inside and I’ll make us some hot chocolate.”

Jensen nods sleepily, trying to untangle himself from Jared and the taller man bundles the blankets around him, wrapping him up tightly as he helps him stand.

“With marshmallows,” Jensen yawns and Jared kisses his forehead.

“Of course.”
