Work Text:

The clock struck 1:00 AM as Lisa silently climbed out of bed. She stepped into her slippers so she didn’t have to feel the cold, dusty wooden floor of the house she shared with her wife, Jean.

Lisa tiptoed as she made her way into the kitchen, grabbing a bottle of wine before quietly heading out the front door.

The air was crisp and carried a chill, but Lisa didn’t feel like going back for a coat. She closed her eyes as the moon shined down on her, the wind blowing through her tangled hair.

When she was decently far enough away, she sat down and popped open the bottle.

These days, all Lisa could think about was the impending curse that was put on her when she received her vision. It scared her, not knowing when it would happen, but knowing it would. She drowned her sorrows in the expensive bottle of wine in her hand, wishing it would sink into her faster.

Jean awoke suddenly, feeling Lisa’s absence.
“Lisa, dear,” Jean rubbed her eyes and sat up. Panic settled like a pit in her stomach as she got up, threw on a coat and shoes, and flew out the door.

Jean knew if Lisa had gone anywhere, it probably would’ve been the tree in Windrise. The wind was cold, biting at her cheeks. It was nearing three in the morning, and all Jean could do was hope Lisa hadn’t left long before she woke up.

When Jean arrived, she saw Lisa’s figure slumped against the base of the tree.
“Lisa!” Jean ran over to her to find an empty bottle in her hand, and Lisa passed out. “Lisa, dear,”

Jean sat next to Lisa, trying to wake her up. She slipped off her coat and wrapped it around Lisa, who hadn’t bothered bringing one.

As the panic began to really set in, Lisa’s eyes fluttered open.
“Jean..” Lisa leaned against her wife, still very drunk. “I’m so sorry,”

Tears began to stream down Lisa’s face as Jean held her close.
“It’s okay, my dear. Everything is okay,” Jean whispered into her hair, rubbing her back gently.

“I can’t do it,” Lisa cried, her body wracking with sobs.

“Do what?” Jean softly asked.

“I’m going to die, Jean.”

Jean went silent. Lisa continued to cry, her tears staining Jean’s shirt.

“I don’t want to be alone,” Her sobs were raw, each one tearing Jean’s heart in half.

“I’m right here, my dear,” Jean planted a kiss in Lisa’s hair, fighting back her own tears. “I’ll be right here forever.”

Lisa’s hands clawed at Jean’s back, almost as if she thought she’d disappear right then and there.

“I’m scared.” Lisa looked up at Jean, her emerald eyes full of agony.

“I know, Lisa.” Jean wiped the tears that spilled over her red cheeks. “But I’ll protect you, no matter what. Nothing will hurt you,”

They sat there for what felt like forever, Lisa crying in Jean’s arms who had tears streaming down her own face. Finally, Lisa broke the silence.

“Jean,”

“Yes, my love?”

“Can we go home now?”

“Of course.” Jean helped Lisa to her feet, holding her as they began the walk back home.

As they arrived to their house, Jean helped Lisa take off her coat and guided her to bed.

“Let’s go to sleep.” Jean planted a gentle kiss on Lisa’s forehead, who laid her head on Jean’s chest. It was warm, a sharp contrast to the chill of the evening.

“I love you, Jean,” Lisa’s voice was still thick from crying, but it was ever so sweet.

“So much, it hurts.”

“My dear Lisa,” Jean wrapped a protective arm around her.

“I love you too. Now, let’s get some rest.” Jean brushed a strand of Lisa’s dark hair out of her face before watching her eyes close.

“Goodnight.”
