Diamonds and Rust

Summary:

Can life sometimes feel just too perfect to be real?

Chapter Text

All those pretty little words you said, can’t get them out of my head.

The red sun rose over the dark horizon, peaking through the crack in the curtains, where the dust mites danced in the morning light. A deep sigh sounded in the room, followed by the gentle rustling of blankets.

A soft murmur from one of the figures in bed roused the other and tangled limbs started to separate as the land of dreams faded away from their minds.

“No rush,” Oikawa mumbled as he cracked his eyes open to come face to face with one of his favourite views. Hazel eyes half asleep, but undoubtedly looking back at him taking in the same thing. Silver hair mussed up from sleep and framing his face.

“Mm, we took the week off. I wasn’t going anywhere,” Sugawara replied, sighing contently. “But you know as well as I that you’ll get restless in about two minutes and start talking about plans for the day.”

With a slight pout, Oikawa poked Sugawara’s side repeatedly.

“That’s ‘cause we went to bed early and I got too much sleep already. You’re the one that gets restless and makes me coffee,” he rebuked.

“Ah, so now you’re asking me to rush and make you coffee?” Sugawara asked, chuckling slightly as he grabbed Oikawa’s hand to stop him from poking him.

“…I didn’t say that,” Oikawa answered after a moment of thought. He did want coffee, but he didn’t want to be outdone first thing in the morning.

“You want coffee, don’t you?” Sugawara asked, his smile growing as he watched the morning cogs start to turn in his lover's mind.

“…maybe,” Oikawa mumbled, rolling to lie on his stomach and bury his face in the pillow.

He felt Sugawara start moving next to him, and all of a sudden the bed was still, and Oikawa knew he was going to make them both coffee. He thought about moving for a good moment before his body started to listen to him. Mornings really weren’t his strong suit, but he wasn’t going to stay in bed when he didn’t have his personal heater next to him.

After what he considered a huge amount of effort, Oikawa managed to sit up and even stretched to wake himself up more. After getting out of bed- oh, who was he kidding, he was going to stay wrapped in this blanket until he had at least one cup of coffee down him.

“I was hoping you’d at least emerge from the blanket before I got back,” Sugawara’s voice broke him out of his thoughts and he looked over at the door.

“How long have you been there?” Oikawa asked.

“Long enough to watch you debate moving and resign yourself to warmth,” Sugawara answered with a chuckle as he made his way over and held the warm mug of coffee out to him.

He thought back to when they’d bought the large mug. It was in a market a long time ago in a place far from here and he’d bought the biggest one they had just so he could have more coffee.

“Coffee isn’t just for fun, it’s a way of life,” Oikawa answered, sipping the caffeinated beverage and cradling the cup close, like someone was going to steal it away.

“Uh huh, and how many times are you planning on saying that before you accept you’re addicted?” Sugawara asked, still amused at Oikawa’s obsession with the drink. Though he couldn’t really say anything himself, especially now living with Oikawa and adopting some of his habits.

“Okay fine, since you say I always plan the day, and we’re on holiday, why don’t you decide what we do today?” Oikawa asked, pouting as he blew the surface of the liquid, watching the ripples over the surface and almost falling into a post sleep trance.

“Alright, let’s go out of the city and do something good for the world. It’d be nice to spend the day in the forest,” Sugawara said, without hesitation.

“Sure, but then tomorrow I’mma take you on a picnic,” Oikawa told him, smirking slightly. “Today can be your day, but tomorrow is mine. And wait, you answered that way too quickly. Were you already planning all of this?”

“Okay, deal,” Sugawara laughed slightly. “Go start getting ready, you big baby.”

“Yes mom,” Oikawa rolled his eyes, finishing off his coffee. “But you didn’t answer my question!” He was surprised Sugawara hadn’t commented on how fast he consumed it when he wasn’t even half way through his own drink.

“And I don’t plan on it,” Sugawara laughed warmly as he watched Oikawa slowly move out of his little blanket burrito to get ready.

Getting ready to leave the house was an event in itself for the two of them and Oikawa never knew how they did it. An amalgamation of reminding each other of things, dancing around each other, sometimes laughing, sometimes rolling their eyes. Each day held a different adventure from the second they woke up.

But today it seemed like one second they were in bed, and then the next moment the door was clicking closed behind them.

The outside world was just as pretty. Warm sunlight washed across his back, sending a slight shiver up his spine and the soft hush of the breeze cooled him down just enough to where he felt like he could have still been wrapped in a blanket.

But, Oikawa had to say that he was surprised at how quiet it was.

It wasn’t even quiet, it was silent. So silent that he could have sworn he could have heard a pin drop across the street. It was almost deafening, until he spoke once again.

“Where is everyone?” Oikawa asked, frowning slightly as he looked around. There was nothing around. No one to see, no birds or bugs. Nothing, as far as he could tell.

“The market is open today. I bet everyone went early before work to pick something up,” Sugawara said, looking around, and shrugging slightly. “Come on, we have a whole day of adventure ahead of us.”

“We could always go to the market instead,” Oikawa suggested, before holding his hands up in surrender at the look he was given. “I was kidding. I said today was your day. We’ll go and do what you want and you know I’ll enjoy every second.”

“Mhm, sure,” Sugawara replied suspiciously. Then he took a hold of Oikawa’s hand and headed in the direction of the city gates.

Pristine white, like the walls that surrounded their perfectly sqare city. Even to Oikawa it all felt futuristic and idyllic. Everything was perfect, not a speck of dirt anywhere.

Flowerbeds around the streets were perfectly kept, with uniform flowers that covered every inch, each colour staying neatly within their own bounds, like they were following a set of instructions; a perfect circle of white surrounding a pristine fountain. Arcs of water bloomed from the centre, barely creating any splash in the pool of water below.

Streetlights at regular intervals; ornate, spiralling patterns elegantly trailing up each one.

Even the paving on the ground seemed perfect. Like each brick had been purposely crafted to be in that place.

It was a ridiculous notion to be thinking about something so simple, but it tickled a part of his mind that always drifted towards perfection. He supposed that was one of the main reasons he and Sugawara had chosen to live there.

“What are you thinking about? All daydreamy and lost in thought,” Sugawara asked him after a moment.

“Mm, it’s nothing. Just appreciating everything. We have a slow day off work, it’s nice to appreciate our surroundings sometimes,” Oikawa told him with a hum. His heart felt so full, in a place like this. It was just so perfect.

“We walk to work every morning. You don’t appreciate those things then?” Sugawara asked.

“Pssh, no. I’m going to work . Why would I do that when I could appreciate the few extra moments of braindeadedness I can get?”

“I don’t think that’s a word…”

“It is now.”

“Sure, okay. Whatever you say,” Sugawara laughed at Oikawa’s stubbornness. They approached the gates, and both of them had to pause.

It was always such a sight. Such a contrast from the world they were about to leave.

Outside the city, there was nothing influenced by the hand of man. Forests overflowed and sprawled as far as the eye could see to the left of the gate. And to the right, fields, rolling hills and gorgeous, luscious green grass.

“I’ll never tire of this view,” Sugawara sighed from next to Oikawa, causing him to look over. He was sure his expression mirrored what he could see on Suga. A soft smile, relaxed expression, like any and all stresses had been washed away.

“It is spectacular,” Oikawa agreed, looking back across the view. “Shall we go and explore?”

“We shall.”

With that, the two of them headed towards the forest hand in hand, all fears and tensions left behind at the gate.
