she better be cool

Summary:

“Ok, you have to promise not to freak out.”

Dustin stared intently at Eddie and Steve, who were sat across from him in a booth at the town’s greasiest diner.

“Guys, I don’t know if you’ve been living the same life I have, but I think I’ve used a lifetime and a half’s worth of freak outs. It would take a lot for you to phase me at this point.” Dustin quipped as he drank his root beer float.

“Ok, smartass,” Eddie grinned, “try this one: I’m pregnant”

Work Text:

Eddie lay on his back, legs stretched up the headboard of their bed. Steve reentered the room, toothbrush in hand and mouth full of foam.

“Babe…what are you doing?” he mumbled around his toothpaste.

“It’s supposed to help,” Eddie explained, “something about gravity.” Steve rolled his eyes and went to spit in the bathroom sink. The tap ran for a moment, and when it turned off Steve reentered.

“You’re so cute when you’re excited,” Steve said with a smile, “I’m excited too.” He kissed Eddie’s forehead and ran his fingers through his wild curly hair. Eddie smiled and sighed dreamily.

Steve rapped on the door to their bathroom.

“Eddie? You ok?”

Eddie stood leaning against the bathroom sink. He held the test in his hand, but hadn’t yet worked up the nerve to look.

“You can do this Munson,” he breathed. He looked down and saw, plain as day, two pink lines. Eddie couldn’t help himself - he yelled, “OH MY GOD!”

“Eddie??” Steve banged on the door, “Is everything ok?” Eddie opened the door with a wide smile and tears in his eyes. “What’s going on?” Steve laughed. Eddie handed over the test. Steve looked, and yelled, “OH MY GOD!”

Steve didn’t know that people actually did spit takes outside of TV.

Eddie poured over the large book they got from the library for hours.

“Steve, did you know that newborn babies have more bones than adults do?”

“I have more blood in me now!”

“THE BABY DRINKS ITS OWN PEE!?”

“Babe, we need to go get some fucking vitamin D supplements now, I will not let this creature make my teeth fall out.”

“OH GOD I think that was the baby’s hand, the book says you can see it from outside, THAT WAS TOTALLY ITS HAND-”

“This baby is going to have your hair, I can feel it in my sternum.”

Steve did not expect to come home from work to find Eddie wearing denim overalls, listening to a record, and in the middle of cleaning every inch of their home.

“Eddie? What are you doing?” Steve said, amused. Eddie took off his headphones and wiped his forehead.

“What’s it look like I’m doing? The fucking dishes.” Eddie answered.

“Baby, you’re nesting,” Steve laughed.

“What? No!” Eddie replied, “I just needed to get the house organized, can you believe how much random junk we have?”

“You’re in the third trimester, you are absolutely nesting.”

Eddie flushed red and bit his lip.

Steve and Eddie sat shoulder to shoulder in a much too small hospital bed. Steve cradled their daughter - their daughter! - in the crook of his elbow. Eddie nuzzled into his shoulder and smiled, his eyes still closed.

“That hurt a lot, so she better be cool,” Eddie murmured. Steve smiled and used his free hand to swipe a curl from Eddie’s forehead.

Eddie stirred.

“Babe, I just realized…” Eddie began. Steve looked at him quizzically. “I cut my fucking tits off, what are we supposed to feed her with?” Steve just looked at him and chuckled.

“We’ll figure it out.”
