"So... have you ever done it?"
"What?" Steve asks, his eyes on the comic he is reading while he is lying with one leg dangling out of his bed.
"Kiss a girl." Tommy clarifies, blushing.
"Maybe."
"That's not an answer!"
"A gentleman never kisses and tells." Steve replies, eyes still glued to his comic.
"This is bullshit! You are thirteen! You are no fucking gentlemen!" Tommy yells.
"Language!" Steve's mum yells back from somewhere and finally Steve raises his eyes from the comic.
"Why do you want to know that?"
Tommy hesitates, embarrassed, he wants to know because Steve is always surrounded by girls and he looks older than his thirteen years so he has seen him hang out with a couple of high school girls and he is dying to know what kissing a girl feels like.
The last time Tommy kissed someone he kissed his grandma and he got some dead skin on his lips, deciding from that moment on that he would have never kissed someone else in his life!
But then he and Steve started to go to the movies and there were so many kisses everywhere, even in the action movies that they watch because they like the explosions, and Tommy started to crave to kiss and to be kissed, but he was Steve's shadow, no girl was really interested in him, they just wanted a way to get to Steve, the richest boy of the town.
"If you don't know why you want to know it you are not old enough to get an answer."
"Cut this bullshit." Tommy hisses "You are just a couple of months older than me!"
"But I'm higher."
"I can still grow, shithead!"
Steve sighs and finally closes the comics, getting closer to Tommy.
"Do you really want to know how it feels to have someone else's lips pressing on yours? Breathing the same air? Holding hands and feeling the electricity?"
Tommy swallows loudly, his cheeks feel so hot that he knows that he is blushing and he can't hide it "I do."
And it's more than a request, it's almost a plea.
"It depends. Some girls have those sticky lip glosses that keep your lips glued to hers like fly paper. Others have braces and you have to take care that they don't accidentally bite you." Tommy is getting closer to Steve, feeling his breath on his face and the warmth from his body.
"Is it good? Do you like it?”
"Sometimes." Steve replies, bored, getting back on the bed to his comics.
"And are you good at it?"
Steve lifts an eyebrow "Of course, I'm good at it."
"And how did you learn?"
"Practice." Steve replies without lifting his eyes.
Tommy nods, it makes sense, so all Tommy has to do is wait for the right girl and start practicing with her, maybe the school ball will be the right opportunity for him to try to kiss a girl, he only wishes that the girl in question will not bite him.
"Can you... can you give me any advice?"
"Choose an ugly girl."
"What?"
Steve nods, eyes fixed on the comics like giving sexual advice to Tommy was the boringest thing in the world "The ugly girls are usually at their first experience too and they are kinder. They will not laugh at you when you will try to go for their lips and end up kissing their nose."
"Fuck you! I know where I have to kiss!" Tommy grumbles.
"Do you?" for once Steve lifts his eyes, staring at Tommy who feels like a bug under a magnifying glass.
"I do." Tommy replies with more confidence than he actually feels.
"Show me."
"What?"
"Show me that you know what to do. Where to put your hands."
Tommy shivers "I can't. There is no girl here."
"You could practice with me."
"You? But... you are a boy."
Steve laughs “I know that I'm a boy but you are my best friend and I don't want you to humiliate yourself the first time you kiss a girl." They are friends. Best friends, since kindergarten "Would you like me to help?"
Tommy nods, completely charmed by Steve who moves like a big cat toying with a mouse.
Steve gets up and closes the door, then he gets closer to Tommy "So. First thing: look at them like they were the last piece of pizza and you were terribly hungry." Tommy can almost feel the hotness of Steve's stare on his skin "Then you tuck some hair behind their ears, maybe whispering some compliments about their perfume or their jewels."
"And then I kiss them."
"Amateur. No, you don't kiss them, you make them eager to kiss you."
And Tommy knows exactly what Steve means because now he is getting closer to the other boy without even understanding why.
"Just like that. Then you smile, you say some silly thing like 'You are the most beautiful girl I have ever seen' and then..."
"Then?"
"That's the moment you kiss them."
Steve's hand is still in Tommy's hair, the other on his lower back holding him close and Tommy is ready, so ready to give his best friend his first kiss, but Steve moves away and goes back to his comic.
"Now that you know how to do it, you can practice."
Tommy gathers all his courage and asks "With you?"
"No, not with me silly, with some ugly girl. We can go to see the movie Saturday, I'll ask Rose and you could ask Jennifer. I'll make sure to get the last row seats”
Tommy nods, trying to hide how turn on he is from this little interaction.
"Steve, Tommy, dinner is ready." Steve's mum calls them.
Steve snorts "She likes to play the perfect housemaid but it's actually Maria who cooked."
Tommy nods, but before they leave the room Steve takes his hand "If you didn't manage to kiss someone before the school ball I'll kiss you, ok? So you'll not be anxious."
"You would be my first kiss." Tommy whispers.
"I like that." Steve replies, then he opens the door and goes downstairs to have dinner, while Tommy wonders if he should wait a little bit longer for that first kiss.
