Work Text:

Yuma exited the elevator, a small smile on his face. He was going to visit Makoto today. It had been awhile- and while they usually called, Yuma knew that Makoto enjoyed his presence a lot. Makoto may try to act like he didn't mind either way, but Yuma could tell. They'd been planning this visit for some time, making sure their work wouldn't interfere. It was a time to catch up, maybe work on things together- it had taken awhile for Makoto to ever let Yuma even potentially help, though.

Yuma walked into Makoto's home, looking around. Then, he frowned. It was so quiet- usually, Makoto would be right at the door, immediately talking Yuma's ear off. But he wasn't there. Yuma stepped in further, immediately worried. He knew that Makoto was probably fine, but he couldn't help it. His instincts honed from years of detective work, probably. So, cautiously, he walked further into the house, inspecting every corner.

He didn't find anything out of the ordinary until the stepped into Makoto's room.

“Hmm hmm hmmm…~”
Makoto was laying on his stomach, kicking his legs back and forth and… drawing with a crayon? His mask was off, laying on the desk. Yuma hadn't seen him do that before. Of course, it wasn't like Yuma was here very often, but they had a routine down. And the two of them loved their routines.

“...Makoto?” Yuma spoke up, stepping towards him.

“Huh?” Makoto looked back at him, before his face lit up into a bright smile. “Yuma!!” He exclaimed, before scrambling to his feet and wrapping him in a hug. Makoto was wobbly, leaning on Yuma as he held him tight.

“Oh-!” Yuma was taken a little by surprise, stabilizing himself. Then, he chuckled a little, patting Makoto's back. “Are you feeling okay, Makoto-?” Yuma asked, a little concerned.

“Mmhmm.” Makoto still had that bright smile, nuzzling his head into Yuma's shoulder.

Makoto was never this affectionate right off the bat. Sure, they might snuggle near the end of visits, but never at the start. Was Makoto sick? That could explain the change… Yuma raised his hand to feel Makoto's forehead, the other leaning into his touch. Nope. No fever… and Makoto hadn't sniffled or coughed at all since Yuma had arrived. Makoto may be a homunculus, but human sickness still affected him the same way it did for humans. Yuma frowned, looking at Makoto. “...Uh… no mask today?” It wasn't that Yuma minded, it was just… different.

Makoto shook his head. “Noooo. It's uncomfy!!” He exclaimed.

“Ah, okay…” Yuma nodded, looking a bit unsure.

Eventually, Makoto let go, gently gripping Yuma's hand. “Yuma!! Look, look.” Makoto pulled Yuma to sit on the floor. Ah, he was showing off his drawings. Yuma looked at them, tilting his head slightly. Now, neither of them were the best artists- they'd used their coalescence to learn how to draw back when they'd been training to be a detective, for investigative purposes. These drawings, however, didn't tap into that skill they'd learned so long ago. It had probably been ages since Makoto had drawn, but still… these looked like children's drawings.

That wasn't to say that Yuma disliked them, though. It just wasn't Makoto's typical style.
“Oh, these are… great. Uh, Makoto- how much sleep have you gotten recently..?” Yuma looked back at him. Makoto's eyebags were the same as ever.

“Uhhh… I woke up a little ago. When that said ‘eleven’.” Makoto pointed to the clock. So, he'd slept in..? Unless he'd stayed up late…

“Do you remember when you went to bed last night?” Yuma pressed on, trying to figure this out. Makoto shook his head.

“Nuh uh. Don't remember.” Makoto picked up a crayon, returning to drawing. “Yuma! Draw with me!!” He sounded so thrilled, so excited.

Yuma hesitated, but then nodded. “Ah, okay…” he'd draw while figuring out what was going on. Plus… it looked pretty fun. Makoto smiled at him, handing him a crayon. Even Makoto's arms and hands were clumsy, uncoordinated.

Yuma started drawing absent-mindedly, laying on the floor with Makoto. Then, an idea popped into his head. “Say, Makoto… did you get drunk?” Maybe that could explain it. Alas, Makoto shook his head.

“Nooo! I haven't drunk anything.” He giggled, seemingly finding this funny.

“...well, that's not good, either…” Yuma sighed. He had no idea what was going on- he didn't really like that feeling. Makoto looked at him, blinking for a moment, before rolling over to hold Yuma again. Yuma patted his back, smiling slightly.

He may not know what was going on, but… he'd help, as best he could. Maybe it'd help him figure out what was happening.

“...Okay, Makoto. I want you to drink something. It isn't good to not drink…” Yuma looked at him, shaking his head.

“Juice?” Makoto tilted his head, peering at him.

“...Sure. We can get you juice. Come on.” Yuma got up, offering a hand for Makoto to take. Makoto took it, smiling brightly as Yuma led him to the kitchen.

Juice, cartoons, games, puzzles- Makoto had a lot he wanted to do today. Honestly, Yuma didn't mind. It was relaxing for him, too. Maybe that was it. Maybe Makoto just wanted to relax a little… it still didn't explain his motor function trouble or the slight differences in his personality and actions, but it made a bit of sense. After a couple hours of this, Makoto yawned.

“Tired, huh?” Yuma chuckled, looking at the other. Makoto just gave a nod, before extending his arms to Yuma. He wanted to be carried…? Well, Yuma could do that. It wasn't that he couldn't carry Makoto. It was just… still, so different… yet, he obliged, carefully picking up Makoto. They were the same size, so it was a little awkward, but they managed. Yuma brought Makoto over to his bed, before setting him down. “There you go.”

Makoto smiled, getting all comfortable in the bed. Yuma smiled back at him, before turning away to leave the room. He stopped, though, hearing Makoto whine. “Nooo…. Come back…” Makoto shook his head, reaching for Yuma again.

Yuma looked back at him, a little surprised. Well… he was a little sleepy, too. So, he could snuggle Makoto, if that was what he really wanted. Yuma walked back to the bed, tilting his head. “Do you want me to sleep on the bed with you?” He asked, to which Makoto nodded vigorously. Yuma chuckled, nodding and climbing into the bed.

Immediately, Makoto latched onto him, his arms wrapped around Yuma tightly. He was like a koala… Yuma smiled, getting comfortable before closing his eyes.

A few hours later, Yuma stirred. It took him a moment to realize Makoto wasn't cuddling him anymore, causing him to frown and sit up. Makoto was sitting at his desk in the room, clicking away at his laptop.

“...Makoto?” Yuma tilted his head. The homunculus paused, before going back to typing.

“Ah, you're awake. Did you rest well, Yuma?” Makoto didn't look at him, his focus almost entirely on the computer. Well, at least that was normal.

“Mhm… but, why'd you immediately get back to work?” Yuma got off the bed, walking over to him. It didn't escape his notice that the drawings were gone.

“Ah, well, I figured I'd get back to it while you slept.” Makoto shrugged.

“You don't have to do that, Makoto. You were tired, too.” Yuma pointed out, tilting his head.

Makoto didn't reply to that, still not facing Yuma. Yuma sighed. “Come on. Do you want to talk about what happened?”

Again, Makoto was quiet for a bit. Then, he groaned, his head hitting the desk as he pushed the laptop away.

“Makoto, don't do that..-” Yuma walked closer to him, peering at his expression. Makoto looked… thoroughly embarrassed, which wasn't what Yuma had expected.

“I need to develop a device that allows me to remove people's memory…” Makoto huffed, covering his face with his hands.

“Or, maybe not. Come on. Can you explain what happened…?” Yuma put a gentle hand on his back. Makoto hesitated, before sighing and sitting up.

“...I'm not entirely sure. Sometimes I simply wake up and discover I've wasted time by doing… weird, childish things.” He looked a bit annoyed, yet still embarrassed Yuma had seen that.

“Hm…” Yuma had a thoughtful expression. “...What were you doing before it happened this time?” He asked, tilting his head.

“Working, of course. What else?” Makoto chuckled, stretching in his chair. “I was planning on getting all of today and tomorrow's work done early.”

“That sounds like a lot. More than the usual, I mean. Maybe you just got so stressed you had to stop yourself?” Yuma tilted his head.

“..By feeling the need to scribble on paper?” Makoto raised an eyebrow.

“Yeah. I mean, it relaxed me, too.” Yuma gave a shrug.

Makoto just shook his head, finding the hypothesis a bit too silly to believe. Yuma noticed that, smiling slightly. “Here. Why don't you try taking it easier, and see what happens?”

“Mmhmm. When's the last time you ‘took it easy’?” Makoto teased, smirking. Yuma gave a sheepish chuckle.

“I'll try, too. But, I think it'd be nice to get to the bottom of this. And, if you want, you can call me whenever it happens?” Yuma offered.

Makoto shook his head. “Not a chance. It was… highly embarrassing. I'd rather not do that again.”

Yuma shrugged. “Well, the offer still stands. I didn't mind it.” He gave a small smile.

“I'll consider it.” Makoto chuckled. “Now, let me finish up. Then we can actually spend time together.”

Yuma nodded, moving to sit back on the bed.
They'd figure this out together, even if Makoto was unwilling.
