Work Text:
Joy was sitting in a chair, right in front of the console as a dream played. It clearly wasn’t Dream Productions best, as she wasn’t paying much attention to it, and was mostly waiting for the dream to end. Usually she’d be more optimistic about the work of Dream Productions, however this dream seemed significantly boring, as it was similar to a previous nights’ dream. ‘Surely they could be more creative’ Joy thought to herself.
Joy’s attention was averted when she heard a loud BANG from Sadness’ room. It sounded like something was knocked over!
Joy stepped away from the console, and towards all the emotions’ sleeping quarters, and quietly went up to Sadness’ room. The door to it was still closed. “Sadness? Are you okay in there?” Joy said, clearly worried for her blue companion. “Go away…” Sadness said. Her voice seemed slightly, off. It was melancholic, as it typically was, however it also seemed oddly hoarse. Joy started to worry. What if Sadness was sick, and if she was, how had it come on so suddenly? “Sadness? Are you alright?” Joy pressured.
“Joy please..” Sadness said. For a moment, Joy almost thought she heard a growl..?!
“Sadness?” Joy asked, her concern increasing. Joy looked through the peephole of the door of Sadness’ room and saw her. To put it simply, Sadness wasn’t her usual self.
It looked like she was covered in blue fur, most of it matching the color of her hair. Her glasses weren’t on her face, as they had most likely fallen off, due to them not being able to fit on the canine-like snout that she had. She was sniffing like a dog, clearly aware Joy was nearby, yet was unaware she was looking at her through the peephole. She whimpered, and pawed at the floor of her room, seemingly distressed.
Joy turned the knob of the door to Sadness’ room, and opened the door. Sadness seemed to back up at the sound of Joy’s voice, and covered her face with her clawed hands. “Sadness..?” Joy said, concerned. “When did-“ Joy started to say, but was interrupted by Sadness bolting past her. Whatever the reason Sadness was like this, she didn’t want Joy and the others to see her in this state. Unbeknownst to her, Joy had already seen her.
Sadness pressed various buttons and nudged switches with her large clawed hands. It’s clear she was trying to do something, but her dexterity was challenged in her current state. Soon, a recall tube came down, and Sadness jumped onto the console and climbed in the tube, wedging herself in it. Then the suction of the recall tube soon whisked her away.
“Sadness!” Joy said, as she tried to go after Sadness, but the recall tube retracted before she could go after Sadness.
Soon Sadness fell in a bin of memories. She climbed out of it, quickly running off, knocking memories out of the shelves of long term memory as she went. The mind workers most likely won’t be happy about that..
Soon she caught sight of a pink elephant wearing a brown hobo sort of outfit. He had orange striped legs, and a purple striped tail. That peculiar creature was Bing Bong, Riley’s imaginary friend from when she was younger. He seemed to be looking for something amidst the memory shelves.
Sadness growled and ran towards him, knocking him over! He was slammed into a memory shelf. Numerous memories fell. Some landed around him, one even hit him on the head, then landed onto the ground.
He rubbed his now hurting head with one hand, disoriented by what had just occurred. A few candy tears came from his eyes, due to the pain he was in. Sadness quickly ran off as he started to come to. Even with all the fur, Bing Bong was able to tell, that blue fluffball was Sadness.
Sadness tried to climb up a memory shelf, knocking multiple memories out of the shelf, and sending others up to headquarters as she climbed to the top of the shelf.
Meanwhile, in Headquarters, Joy had left through the recall tube, trying to search for Sadness. The other emotions had been woken up by the commotion that had occurred. “What the hell happened here..” Anger said, as he saw many memories scattered on the floor of Headquarters. “It looks like a tornado went through here.” Disgust said with a twinge of sarcasm. “Maybe it did! How could you know?!” Fear said, panicked. “A tornado didn’t come through, you idiot!” Anger replied. “Yeah, a tornado couldn’t even exist in here!” Disgust added. Anger would notice what appeared to be a small patch of dark blue hair. It seemed that a patch of fur had fallen off of a certain blue wolf.
Anger would pick up the patch of hair. “What is it..?” Fear asked nervously. “It’s hair you idiot!” Anger shouted. “Wh-What if it’s from a bear or a wolf.…wh-what if it from ATE Sadness and Joy!” Fear exclaimed. “If that’s the case, how the hell would something like that get in here you nitwit?!” Anger aggressively responded. “I heard a howl earlier!” Fear exclaimed. Both Anger and Disgust looked at Fear, with intrigued expressions. “You did?” Anger asked, puzzled.
Fear nodded. “It sounded like it was coming from Sadness’ sleeping quarters too!”
Then something clicked in his head. “Wh-What if…the howl I heard W-WAS Sadness?!” He yelped. “So, she’s some kinda monster now?!” Anger exclaimed. “Hopefully not a gross one. Eugh!” Disgust said with a hint of sarcasm.
Fear directed his attention to the console, it having been idle during their conversation. He went to the console and started to little by little, press buttons, rotate knobs, and pull switches on the console. The environment within Riley’s mind began to get lighter, as she was starting to wake up as Fear touched the console.
Meanwhile in Long Term Memory, Joy was running past shelf after shelf, following the trail of fallen memory orbs. She then ran into Bing Bong. “Bing Bong! Do you know where Sadness went?” Joy asked him. “Do ya know she’s a wolf…well I think she’s a wolf…it was kinda hard to tell what exactly, when…when she slammed me against a memory shelf!” Bing Bong said, clearly a bit overwhelmed by what had occured. “Where did she go?” Joy asked. Bing Bong pointed in the direction of where Sadness had went. Joy went in that direction, and Bing Bong proceeded to follow her. “Joy! Wait up!” he shouted, as he followed behind Joy.
The pair reached the memory shelf that Sadness had climbed. She was still up there. “Sadness!” Joy shouted. Sadness looked down, there seemed to be much less fur on her now. Perhaps the fact that Riley was awake, was affecting Sadness’ physical state?
Sadness would jump down from the memory shelf, and Joy would catch her. Joy would gently set her down, her balance being unsteady during the moment that she held Sadness up. In the process of this, not a word was said by Sadness. “What was-“ Joy started to ask, but she was interrupted by Sadness. Sadness had proceeded to rest her face against Joy’s torso, and started to cry, many thoughts rushing through her head. Joy comfortingly hugged Sadness. Perhaps it was best to ask Sadness about it all, once they got back to Headquarters.
The three of them would go to a station for the Train of Thought. Once the train arrived at the station, they would all get on the train. During the ride, Sadness was silent, and seemed to avoid talking to Joy throughout the trip. “Sadness, what’s wrong?” Joy piped up. No response was given from Sadness. She seemed almost uncomfortable about something. “What’s wrong?” Bing Bong asked, even he was starting to worry about Sadness.
Still no response from her.
It quickly dawned on Joy, that Sadness most likely did not wish to speak about the events that had occurred. At the moment, at least.
Once they got back to headquarters, Joy and Sadness exited the train. Bing Bong joined them, as he wanted to meet the rest of the emotions.
“Where the hell were you two?!” Anger shouted, when he saw Joy and Sadness come in headquarters through the hatch that connected to where the train stopped at Headquarters.
“It’s….a long story.” Sadness answered. Joy looked at Sadness, with a slightly worried expression. “Thank goodness you’re okay!” Fear exclaimed, from his position at the console.
