He could barely keep the smile threatening to split across his face; trying to keep an air of mystery about his surprise was harder than he thought.
“What’s got you grinning stupidly?” Dani asked as she touched down on the ground next to him, a grin on her own face. He was contagious.
“You’ll see”
“This is a prank isn’t it? Tucker’s probably right around the corner somewhere,” she accused lightheartedly, making a show of her eyes darting around. All she saw was the stage, a few chairs, and a couple of glowing exit signs. Nothing and nowhere to really hide behind.
“Nope, no prank,” he replied, popping the “p.”
“Okay, so if it’s not a prank, what are we doing here? At this hour of the night, in your school auditorium of all places?”
“Well, I told you I wanted to show you something, but it’s not really the kind of thing you can do in broad daylight. I picked this place because it’s spacey, it’s dark, and nobody is going to bother us. I already temporarily disabled my parents’ ghost alarm so it won’t freak out on us.”
Anticipation building now, she paused a bit before asking, “Wait, is it something to do with your powers? Did you learn a new trick?”
“The coolest”
Practically bouncing with excitement, she eagerly demanded, “Show me!”
In response, he touched his hands together, hovering them a bit in front of his chest. Even though he had transformed back into his human half, the white glow between his palms was glowing brighter by the second.
“Okay, well, close your eyes, this part gets real bright!”
Satisfied that she had her eyes closed, he then followed his own advice and also closed his eyes, concentrating. He felt the energy growing between his hands, and even growing behind his eyelids. It wasn’t like his normal ecto-energy, green of the Infinite Realms and reminiscent of flames. It didn’t even feel quite the same- it was somehow both hot and cold, the contrast growing sharper and more powerful the longer he built it. When he felt he could contain it no longer, the energy practically spilling out and crackling between his fingers, he gave one last inhale before letting it burst.
A flash of light brighter than any firework was accompanied by a flurry of sparks that whizzed by, carried by the energy of his own supernova in miniature.
They scattered all throughout the auditorium, the darkness partially giving way to the light of hundreds, if not thousands of stars twinkling throughout the space. It was as if the heavens were brought down to Earth, each ethereal gem an exact reflection of the stars one would see on a clear night out camping.
“Okay, you can open them now”
He turned around to see her giving a peek between her fingers, his grin back in full force.
“Well?”
Peeling her fingers away from her face, her eyes widened as she finally understood what she was looking at. The absolute joy and awe in the wonder before and around them shining on her face.
“Pretty cool, right?”
