The distant stench of blood hung in the room. Not enough to cause significant discomfort, but enough that John's stomach twisted.
Walking through the pillars, he caught a glimpse of writing on one.
It simply read "see it," with some other letters cut off at the middle.
His brow furrowed, confused. He looked at the other pillars, spotting more writing.
He perked up, and walked further through the pillars.
When you see it,
DONT MOVE
John squinted, nodding while fiddling with his cross.
Walking into the next room, built very similarly to the one he was just in, he spotted the source of the stench - large blood splatters on the floor across the room.
He clutched his cross, and started walking through the room.
A figure appeared from behind the pillar.
"Mother?"
It shambled towards him, disembodied hands clutching its face. John shook, but stayed as still as he could, trying to control his breathing.
It got right up to his face. He instinctively leaned back the tiniest bit.
It uncovered one of its eyes.
A bloodshot pupil, too wide in its socket to be human, stared at him. It tilted its head and the eye squinted, as if it was smiling at him, tempting him. It would be a cute gesture, were the musty, iron scent not still strong in his mind.
It tilted its head in the other direction, and shuffled away from him.
The second it disappeared around the corner, John relaxed, heartbeat pounding in his ears.
He backed up to the pillar next to him and slid down to a sitting position, trying to catch his breath.
