The past loves to knock at the door during the holidays.

Day Eight: "Is it supposed to be tilting?"

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“Is it supposed to be tilting like that?”

Link jumps and barely gets out of the way before the ornament crashes on his feet. He whips around – objects glow a bright green as he activates Ultrahand – as things around him float, ready to strike but it was none other than Kohga with a few other Yiga members snooping around.

Strangely, the Yiga Blademaster is holding a very large sack.

Things settle back into place as Link tries to figure out what the Yiga want. Ganondorf has long since been defeated and the only thing that remains of him is his secret stone, which now remains with Impa and the other Sheikahs. Since then, the Yiga have been heard about, save for Tulin's recount of meeting up with Kohga when Link was sick.

“What brings you here?” Link asks, not looking very intimidating.

Wearing the well-worn shorts and trousers from years ago that Saki had kindly mended for him. Link really should learn how to properly sew at this point, maybe he’ll ask Saki later. His shoes are by the door, and he has no plans of going to town any time soon.

“I heard that you are having a party in a few days, figured I get involved.” As if that explains anything. “I brought presents for everyone as well.” Kohga motioned for the Blademaster to put the sack down and they set it on the table in the middle of the room before leaving. “Can’t find good help these days.”

Link set down the box of decorations next to the sack before looking inside. “What happened to Sooga, I think I remember that's his name?” He didn’t notice the sudden shocked expression on Kohga’s face before it disappeared when Link looked over at him for a second.

Kohga coughs and looks away. “Well, not all of us can be here to see the glory that is the Demon King.” There are sounds of bitterness and sadness in his voice but it’s clear that Kohga doesn’t want to speak on the matter. “Anyways, I’ll return for the party.”

Smoke takes the place of each member of the Yiga and leaves Link standing in his own home alone. Link grabs the box again to finish setting up the tree before putting Kohga’s presents underneath.

“Link?” The door creaks open just as Link leans out from the kitchen to see Teba and Kass come walking in. “Do you mind if we hide the kids’ gifts here?”

“Yeah, you can put it under the tree if you want.” Link went about checking on his cookies while putting away his baking supplies. Saki has claimed the main supper while Link has been tasked with making the dessert for the party. “Just be careful of Kohga’s stuff!”

The Ritos came into view and went about setting stuff on the table; Teba went about checking on their stuff but Kass seemed to be surprised. Kass points towards the gifts already under the tree.

“You saying that Kohga, the guy who runs the Yigas, just decided to drop these off?” Kass question and have every right to question what Kohga is up to.

“Not surprising, Kohga plays up a big game but is a nice person.” Teba is sorting the gifts into groups to ensure they have everything. Quite focused on the task but notice the confused look from both Kass and Link. “Tulin and I went to the past, remember? We changed things so that our future didn’t happen in their time…” Teba stops, thinking about it. “Great, I’m just confusing myself.”

“Sounds like a great adventure, Dad,” Link said.

Link takes the group once Teba is done and goes about finding places to put them with Kass’s help.

“You think your old man is–?” Kass gestures to his own head, causing Link to snort.

The trio worked together to get everything sorted before Kass left shortly afterwards; having been asked to pick up some groceries before returning home. Link had set out a different plate of cookies to share with his Dad before he returned home.

Teba has been eyeing the gifts that Kohga has left behind.

“Do you want to get him something?” Link question.

After all this time, Link isn’t quite sure what had happened when Teba and Tulin disappeared. Revali and he didn’t notice until finishing up another round of Korok hunting. They did discuss what happened and what caused them to leave but figured that they would return at some point, which they did.

Being told about the whole time travel trip and meeting Link’s ancestor made him question a few things. Mostly if his ancestor would be proud of who he is; not his Grandpa Wolf – who he found out was someone related him to – but someone closer in time to him. Teba said that he would be but something held Link back from actually believing that.

“I think there’s only one thing Kohga would want and it’s not something we can get easily.” Teba broke the tree cookie in half. “Sooga isn’t someone in this time, I wonder why that is…”

“How did you time travel before?” Link question.

Teba explains about this little egg machine thing that would follow Princess Zelda around and Link wonders if they have something like Terrako in this time. Most likely would still be in Zelda’s study in the castle but after the final battle with the Demon Dragon, the castle has long since been destroyed. Link doubts that if anything survived it would still be there after all this time.

However, there’s still the Temple of Time.

It’s how Link manages to meet with his Grandpa Wolf before returning to his own time.

The problem with that method is that the person being pulled from the past isn’t human and is stuck in an animal form until they returns home. At least, that’s what Link thinks is what happened. His grandpa wasn’t able to explain a lot.

“We can always get the others involved?” Link suggest.

Riju, Sidon, and Yunobo were the only other ones to travel with Tulin and Teba so they could help them with this. They have also become friends with Kohga of the past and probably would help them figure out a way for Sooga to be here again.

“Before we go on this whole new adventure, can you help me wrap some gifts for your mother and Storm Wind?”

“Sure.”

There’s still a little time before the party but it’s hard to say if they’ll figure it out by then.

Notes:

One thing is that Terrako in the main canon is long gone and only the AOC!Terrako still exists.

Also, any mention of Princess Zelda will relate back to Age of Calamity Zelda and not our Zelda.

Mostly because I feel like she would give up her princess title and find other ways to help rebuild Hyrule that don't relate to ruling over Hyrule. This Zelda can focus on her studies, research, and anything else she would enjoy while also helping people. (She also lives in Link's old house while Link now lives in his house in Terray Town).

There's more going on with their relationship, mostly that it's badly broken and neither one has taken the time to fix it.

Maybe at some point, I'll write a one-shot with these two and sort out their problems. It's why Zelda won't be at the party when I do write it, mostly because she's spending the holidays with her own family that she has made over the years. (Kinda like how Link became a part of Teba's family. Zelda became a part of Urbosa's family).

(Doubt I explain anything well).

Hopefully, you enjoyed and have a wonderful day/night!
