Understanding

Summary:

Grim is feeling homesick, Anakin knows what that's like more than most.

Work Text:

Grim was sitting down drawing in her sketchbook. She tried not to get any tears on the pages. Holding them back as she looked at the faces of her mother and father. She would never see them again. But she had made her decision, and she did not regret it.

Even still she missed her home.

Anakin found her. “Are you alright, Tiny?” He asked her.

She sniffled and wiped away her tears before Anakin saw them. “Y-yeah. I’m fine, Skywalker.”

She didn’t convince him. “You don’t look fine. What’s bothering you?’

“Nothing’s really bothering me,” she said. She looked at her sketchbook and sighed. “I just miss my home.”

Anakin understood. Grim had joined the Jedi Order older than most, just as he had. “Do you want to talk about it?” He offered.

“You wouldn’t understand,” she said, sadly.

“I might understand better than you think, I was nine when I became a Jedi.”

“I know,” she said. “But you could have gone back, visited, I don’t get that.”

“My training with Master Kenobi and the missions we went on often kept me away from my mother,” Anakin told her. Not sure why he was bringing it up. “Just like your training and missions keeps you away from your home.”

She shook her head. “It’s a bit more complicated than that, Anakin.”

 “How so?”

“I don’t want to talk about it.”

“I understand,” he said. He probably understood more than she knew. He noticed what she was drawing in her sketchbook. “Are those your parents?”

She nodded. “Yeah. They are. I miss them.”

“I can see the resemblance,” he said. “You don’t have to, but if you ever need someone to talk about your life before being a Jedi, you can talk with me. I know what it’s like.”

She smiled. “Thank you.” She hugged him.

He hugged her back. “Any time.”

It was nice - Grim realized - to not be alone in that fact. Both of them had once lived lives outside of the Jedi Order - before their lives had changed forever. Anakin understood this part of her more than any other Jedi would.
