Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

“Professor! Professor, are you alright? Can someone please go get Professor War!”

Yin woke up feeling like he was just run over by the Hogwarts Express before being trampled by a group of thestrals – which was just a creative way of saying that he felt like shit. His vision was blurry, and his ears were ringing but he had enough control over himself to register that there were a few faces staring at them as well as a few specters moving above them. He was not at the bed he crashed at last night.

“He’s awake! Everyone give him space until Professor War gets here.”

The ringing in his ears gradually disappeared until he could hear people scurrying around the room and when he got his vision back, he realized that he was staring at what seemed to be a whole class of Hogwarts students looking at him with a mixed amount of horror and concern. Something wasn’t right.

“Professor, are you alright?” A student piped up, flinching when the professor squinted at him. Yin could make out a prefect badge pinned on the breast of his blue trimmed cloak, which probably meant that he was the one telling the other students to give him space awhile ago. “Professor?”

“What happened?” Yin managed to groan out, holding his head in his hand while his other hand reached out for his wand.

“Well.” The Ravenclaw prefect turned to his classmates, looking unsure and at loss for words. “We’re not sure. You were in the middle of your lecture and then you just – fell?”

“I fell?”

“More like you crumpled to the floor sir. We managed to get you on your chair but then you weren’t moving – or breathing actually. Nancy should be here with Professor War soon.”

Yin’s hazy mind was barely registering what the prefect was saying, none of it made sense anyway. But he paused at the mention of the familiar name, wondering what he had to do with what was happening now. “Professor War?”

“His classroom is the closest here and we figured that your husband would know what to do in this situation?” The prefect answered carefully, probably wondering why his professor was gaping at him. “Professor?”

“My what?”

“Your husband?” The Ravenclaw looked at him weirdly before turning to the other students, looking like he was asking for their help. “Right?”

“War Wanarat is my husband?” Yin asked, looking closely at the group in front of him, trying to figure out if they were pranking him or if this was some sort of cleverly created illusion designed to fool him. However, he was only met with silence and confused stares. “Since when?”

“Uh – since forever?” Another student spoke up, this one a Slytherin. She seemed confident with her answer, until she evaluated the professor’s expression and realized that he was unconvinced. “Or atleast I think so.”

There were two things he needed to process. One, he was at Hogwarts as a professor, teaching what looked like a group of fifth year Slytherin and Ravenclaw students. And two, he was apparently married to War Wanarat. Both of those things, he couldn’t quite wrap his head around.

Last time he checked, he was a cursebreaker for Gringgots with no plans of settling down. And last time they met, War Wanarat was towing around four baby dragons who seemed to think he was one of them. They were also both very much not in a relationship, especially not with each other.

The rational side of him refused to believe that this was nothing more than a prank, because the alternative was impossible.

“Someone needs to tell me what’s actually going on here before I – ” Yin’s words were cut short when the door to the classroom was slammed opened, powerful enough to startle all of them inside, and War Wanarat himself walked in, looking as confused as Yin felt.

It was a relief to see someone familiar but at first glance, Yin could immediately tell that this War Wanarat was different. His hair was still the same tousled mess, he often saw birds in them so it wouldn’t be quite the reach to call it a bird’s nest, and the magizoologist still carried himself with the same whimsical charisma that he’s always had. Despite that, Yin could tell that he was older, and he was also wearing gold-rimmed glasses that made him look more mature but also made him look cuter somehow.

Yin shook himself awake; this was shaping up to be a very odd day.

“Wong.” War greeted through gritted teeth. “We need to talk. Right now.”
