Gina laughed as Ricky shook his head spraying her with water droplets. She shook hers back to give him a taste of his own medicine but he was unfazed as he leaned over to kiss her again. They couldn’t stop smiling though so she pulled back and pressed her forehead to his.
“You know, my mom is probably watching us.”
Ricky glanced over her shoulder towards the house. “And Mack.”
She could hear the repressed scoff in his voice so she tugged on his curls gently until he met her eyes. “He’s not the one I’m kissing right now.” To further prove her point she leaned in and pecked his lips.
Ricky’s arms tightened around her waist. “I’m really sorry.”
Gina shook her head. “No, I’m sorry. I should have told her. She’s just-”
“No, I know. I know.”
A soft smile took over her face as she took in the pure understanding in his eyes. “I know you do.” Blushing she looked down for a moment and saw the red box on the road. “Um, Ricky, why do you have Valentine's chocolates?”
Ricky leaned back as he followed her gaze. “Oh, right, uh, those are for you.”
Gina reached down to pick the wet box up, a small gasp escaping her as she saw the decorations. “It looks exactly the same.” She looked up at him with furrowed brows. “How did you-”
Ricky clasped his hands in front of him nervously. “I kind of have a confession to make and I really hope you’re not mad but I would totally get it if you were.” Gina glanced down at the shiny red box. “On Valentine’s Day, I knew you were alone. I knew you… needed something or deserved something. So I called your mom. I asked her to send you them.” Ricky pauses as he tries to gauge Gina’s reaction but she’s silent even as she meets his eyes again. “I didn’t want to confuse you. And I was going through such a weird time with… And I feel bad I’m even saying this but- but now I wish I’d signed the card.”
“You got me the chocolates.”
Ricky shrugged. “I tried to find a bear but everything was sold out.” Ricky nodded towards the box. “The only thing left was candy.”
Gina shook her head and repeated, “You got me the chocolates.”
Ricky took a small step forward and rested his hands on her upper arms. “Gi-”
“You lied to me.”
“I’m so sorry. You were never supposed to think they were from me. I never thought-” Without warning, Gina was kissing him. He froze as he tried to process what was happening but Gina’s soft nip to his lower lip brought everything back into focus. “You’re not mad?”
She could feel his breath against her face as she shook her head. “I mean, I’m a little mad. I was mortified and I felt so stupid last Valentine’s Day thinking that there was any chance you felt something-”
“I did though,” Ricky interrupted. “I was confused but…” Ricky brushed his nose against hers. “I did.”
Gina gave him a wistful smile. They’d wasted so much time but it didn’t matter anymore. They were together now. “I’m glad you told me.”
Ricky smiled. “Yeah?”
Gina nodded. “It’s kind of nice to know it wasn’t all in my head.”
Ricky bumped his nose against hers again as he whispered, “I promise to sign the card next time.”
Gina laughed as she pushed his face away from hers. “Where did you get these anyway? It’s November.”
Ricky chucked. “You’d be surprised what’s in the discount candy aisle.”
