"Alright kids, today we're doing a different type of training."
Murmurs spread around the empty building in Ground Beta as Aizawa announced their activities for today's heroics class. Some are excited, some are scared, and others are nervous. There isn't much information you can get from a simple 'doing something different' anyway. It can be good different, or bad different.
"Silence!"
The kids shut their mouths immediately. Aizawa sighs. The activity hasn't even started yet and he's already very tired. Don't get him wrong, he loves his job, but his problem children are a whole different type of tiring. He looks at the syllabus he got on his hand again, contemplating if this is a good thing to do. Maybe he shouldn't have said yes to Hizashi when he suggested this activity, or maybe it's a good idea.
"Now, when you're being a hero, sometimes people won't stay a hero forever. It is not unusual for a hero to turn into a villain, or be used by a villain. It is also quite common for a villain to disguise themselves as a civilian and pretend to cooperate with investigation. I trust that none of you will stray to that path, but to train your skill in deduction and perception, today we will be training by doing the mafia game."
There are a few excited squeals and gasps coming from the kids, but there are also some with confused looks on their faces. Aizawa assumes that some of them already know what game it is, while the others don't. But knowing the rule won't matter much since there are some modifications to the rules. He's about to continue talking when he sees Iida raising his hand.
"Sir, what is a mafia game?"
"I was about to explain it to you, thank you, Iida. Now pay attention as I won’t explain it twice. Basically each of you will be assigned a role randomly. There will be three mafias, two polices, one doctor and the rest of you will be civilians. The mafias' job is essentially to hide one assigned item that will be given to them later, it can be documents, money, or weapons. The civilians' job is to find the item and decide who is the mafia using a voting system with five minutes discussion at the end of every turn. The polices' job is to assist the civilians in finding the mafia using the ability to check someone's roles. If the police guess correctly who the mafia is, you have to do your best to convince the others to vote the mafia off. At the end of every turn, the mafias can kill one civilian.
The doctor's job is to guess who the mafia killed and save them. If all of the mafia got caught, or the civilians found the assigned item, the civilians won the game. If the mafia can hide the item and not get caught, then the mafia won the game. There will be four rounds with 20 minutes time between discussion and voting time for the mafia to hide the assigned items and for the civilians to do a scavenger hunt while also investigating others. Any civilians who found the item must report it and give the item to me. If the civilian who found the item got killed by the mafia or got voted off, then the item will return to the mafia. Any questions?"
"Can the mafia make a decoy item, sir?" Yaoyorozu raises her hand. It is clear from her question that she will make a replica of the assigned item using her quirk if she got chosen as mafia.
"No, the assigned items will be announced at the beginning of the game and I will check if it's the actual item or not. Yes Sero?"
"Are the mafias allowed to form an alliance?"
"With who?"
"Other mafia and civilians?"
"All mafias should work together. With civilians, depending on the situation, sometimes villains can incite civilians to help them, so I will allow it. However, any civilians who decide to help the mafias will be on the mafia side and will get the punishment if the mafias lose."
"Are there prices for the winning team, sir?" Ochako raises her hand.
"Yes, the winning team will get free ice cream and extra credit from me, and the losing team will be on cleaning duty for the whole week." The class immediately goes into chaos.
“WHAT?!”
“Oh I have to win now.”
“Don’t you think a whole week is too much, sensei?”
“Wait, the civilians who side with the mafia will be in the mafia team? So if the mafias lose then the civilians who help the mafia will also lose?”
“You extras better watch as I win this mafia game thing!”
“SILENCE!” And once again, everyone zip their mouths. Aizawa pulls out a box full of papers. “Now come get your role one by one starting from Aoyama. Show me the content of your paper before you return to your place.”
One by one the students start to go to Aizawa to grab a piece of paper. They all open the paper and read the content before showing it to Aizawa who then writes the roles on his note. Some let out a small gasp, some got tense, and some let out a relieved sigh. They all sit in a circle formation in the middle of the empty space in the building. Aizawa scans his students one by one, seeing how they fare with their roles. He then explains the rules for the scavenger hunt. During the scavenger hunt, everyone is free to use their quirk, and all means necessary. They can interrogate, blackmail, and force others, however they’re not allowed to use heavy violence. They are allowed to reveal their identity to others, but they are also allowed to lie about their identity. So the mafia can lie and say that they’re the police and vice versa. For the 1st round, the secret item is already hidden somewhere in the building and only Aizawa and the mafias know where it is. While the civilians are searching for the item, the mafias must retrieve the item and hide the item somewhere else.
“Now, for the item you must find is a brown envelope, be careful with the envelope because it’s filled with important documents. Of course there’s actually nothing in the envelope, and there are several other fake envelopes, but you have to treat this as if it’s a real infiltration mission. If the envelope becomes damaged mid game, then the one who damages it will be on cleaning duty for two weeks. The scavenger hunt starts now!”
The moment Aizawa dismissed them, all of the kids dispersed. Since it’s just the first round, they all kinda just move alone. Since the location of the scavenger hunt is only one floor out of the whole building, Aizawa can observe how his students work their way around. Judging by the disembodied gloves and shoes, Hagakure is kinda wandering around searching. Izuku started to interrogate all of his friends one by one. Uraraka grabbed Asui and disappeared somewhere together. Bakugo, Kirishima, Jiro, Sero, and Kaminari are swiping the office section of the building systematically. Iida disappeared somewhere with Shoto, and the rest of the class are just searching on their own like Hagakure does.
“Aoyama, are you a mafia?” Izuku suddenly shot the question.
“ Moi? ” Aoyama looks flabbergasted by the accusation. He literally just stands there searching a box full of documents minding his own business.
“No exaggerated response, no screaming, no flustered reaction, I guess you’re not huh? Alright, thanks for the cooperation.” And just as fast as he arrived, Izuku left just like that. Aizawa takes notes on how Izuku handles interrogation. Not the smoothest or the most reliable, but very time efficient.
“I don’t think you should expose that Ochako-chan, what if I am a mafia?” Aizawa can hear Asui’s voice faintly somewhere behind him. It seems like Uraraka revealed her identity to Asui.
“But I know you won’t kill me even if you’re a mafia! Come on, just make an alliance with me Tsuyu-chan!” Uraraka pesters Asui again. Asui contemplates for a second before she gives in.
“Fine, I will help you to guess which one is the mafia but you better not tell anyone that you’re the police or the mafias will kill you, you understand?” Uraraka nods and then they move together again, now searching for the envelope.
Aizawa takes notes again after the girls’ interaction. Trust is good, but too trusting can backfire to them real bad. Thankfully Asui is a good partner and a very cautious one so Uraraka won’t be in too much trouble. Maybe today he will see a surprise betrayal to teach his kids not to trust anyone too much. The timer went off and the students gathered back in a circle. Now it’s time for them to discuss and deduce who’s the mafia and who to eliminate first. Aizawa handed an eye cover to Hagakure because how else is he supposed to know if she closed her eyes or not. He starts the timer for the discussion time and all hell breaks loose.
“Ok, before we start, for comedic purposes I think we should kill Mineta.” Kaminari voiced out.
“UNPROVOKED???? I LITERALLY DID NOTHING???” Mineta protested.
“Why Mineta, though?” Ojiro inquired. Aizawa silently agreed, killing Mineta off now feels too sudden`and out of the pocket.
“No particular reasons, his vibe is just off, I think it’s better to kill him off this round, especially since it’s just the first round.” Kaminari answered. The argument being ‘the vibe is off’ shouldn’t be accepted as a reason to eliminate someone so early.
“YOU VOTED ME OFF JUST BECAUSE MY VIBE IS OFF???”
“Now, now, I don’t think we should eliminate Mineta just for comedic reasons, how about we do a voting on who we think is suspicious?” Kirishima tried to mediate the situation. Mineta nods vigorously.
“Nah, I think Mineta is sus enough, I say we vote him off.” Jiro laughs while Mineta now vigorously shakes his head.
“Wait, wait we have to find the mafia as fast as possible right? Why don’t we let Mineta defend himself first?” Yaoyorozu argues, earning some nods from the crowd.
“Yeah! Listen to me first! If you guys eliminate me now you will be doomed!” Mineta cries, he needs to have some value so that these spawns of satan won’t eliminate him in the first round.
“And why would we be doomed if we eliminate you?” Jiro taunts him.
“BECAUSE I AM LITERALLY THE DOCTOR! YOU GUYS WON’T SURVIVE WITHOUT ME!!” Hearing Mineta quite literally pleading for his life, the students are looking at each other either amused or horrified.
“Well, anyone can claim to be the doctor though?” Mineta’s mouth dropped because he felt betrayed by his bestie Kaminari. Aizawa did hope for a betrayal but not like this. This is an absolute shitshow.
“If Mineta is the doctor then I am the police.” Tokoyami suddenly blurted out. And that one sentence just throws the class into another chaos.
“Why are you exposing yourself as the police?!”
“Is that even allowed??”
“I think Mineta is really a doctor though?”
“Nah bro I think he lied.”
“I DON’T LIE PLEASE BELIEVE ME I AM THE DOCTOR!!”
“Yea sounds like something a mafia will say. I CALLED IT MINETA IS THE MAFIA!” Kaminari pushed out his thumb indicating that he’s ready to vote.
“BRO WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME?!” Mineta cried, like tears streaming down his face.
“Can we just get this over with? Let’s just kill Grape this round and move on.” Bakugo pushed out his thumb too.
“Yeah, I don’t see any harm in doing that.” Iida stuck out his thumb now.
“ET TU IIDA????”
“Alright, are you all going to vote or what?” Aizawa interfered because the discussion time was almost up. The rest of the class agreed and stuck out their thumbs.
“Any last words?” Bakugo sneers.
“I AM SERIOUSLY THE DOCTOR YOU ALL MADE A BIG MISTAKE BY KILLING ME OFF!” Mineta cried for the final time. Aizawa counted down from three, and almost the whole class put their thumbs upside-down, indicating that they eliminated Mineta.
“Mineta Minoru… Is not a mafia.” Aizawa announces.
“SEE I TOLD YOU ALL I AM NOT THE MAFIA!” Mineta stomps as he walks away from the circle and stands next to Aizawa.
“Haha, sorry bro, I knew from the start you’re not a mafia.” Kaminari laughs. Aizawa has to hold Mineta’s collar so that he doesn’t kill Kaminari.
“I guess Tokoyami is a police then?” Jiro asked. Tokoyami just shrugs at her question. It might just be a weird coincidence though, so the class just doesn’t think much about it. It’s time for the mafias to choose who they are going to kill. Aizawa commands them to close their eyes. First he called out to the police to raise their head and open their eyes. The class can hear a sharp gasp from Mineta, but he most likely got silenced by Aizawa. He then asked the mafias to raise their heads and open their eyes.
“WHAT?!”
“Mineta if you can’t shut up I will have to put you outside. Now mafias, who are you going to eliminate?”
“Sensei, this combination is unexpected but that one mafia in particular is too impulsive!”
“If you’re being noisy one more time—”
“I am sorry sensei.”
“All right, now you all can raise your head. Now, there is a casualty in the heroes. The mafias just eliminated Koji Koda.”
And just like that, the first round of 1-A mafia game ended
