Hey there Delilah

Summary:

Nick moved a thousand miles away.

Notes:

The whole reason I wrote this was for gender_i_hardly_know_her. First I want to say she is a wonderful singer and she sang the song hey there Delilah to me and it was beautiful. That’s the whole reason I wrote this fanfic. Thank you Chase and I love you so much, and I’m so proud of you.

Work Text:

“Hey Nick!” Matt spoke enthusiastically over the phone. Recently, Nick moved to New York to pursue his dream of being a tattoo artist. Matt and Nick had been calling every day; they were a thousand miles apart. How could they not? Nick had gone out to an event that same day, so they hadn’t had the chance to talk. But god did Nick look absolutely fucking charming; Matt felt himself almost tremble at the sight of him. “Hi Matt! This place is not as fun as it is in LA. I miss you guys.” Nick spoke quietly; it was very obvious he missed his brothers, and it was taking a toll on him.

Hey there, Delilah
What's it like in New York City?
I'm a thousand miles away.
But, girl, tonight you look so pretty.
Yes, you do.
Times Square can't shine as brightly as you.
I swear, it's true.

"Nick, don’t worry about the distance; I’ll see you sometime this Christmas. I’m right here when you get lonely.” These are words Matt spoke often. Words that encouraged Nick and made him smile. His eyes closed, and he took a deep breath, Matt’s words repeating in his head. “I can’t wait to see you again.” Nick whispered into the microphone, imagining his next interaction with Matt.

Hey there, Delilah
Don't you worry about the distance?
I'm right there if you get lonely.
Give this song another listen.
Close your eyes.
Listen to my voice; it's my disguise.
I'm by your side.

Nick drove Matt crazy with everything he did. The way he dressed, the way he talked, his laugh, his walk—anything and everything. Whenever Nick's hand grazed his, his heart raced and blood ran to his head. The slightest touch from Nick made him crazy. So I bet you can imagine how much it was affecting him, but he decided to speak positively about the situation. But he would never deny missing his brother because he did, and it was very obvious. He lost sleep because of it, and he lost weight because of it. It got so bad that he even ended up in the hospital for a week.

All three of the brothers were going to Boston, where their parents lived, for Christmas. And the three had decided they would go to New York with Nick after New Year’s. Matt wasn’t physically able to be away from Nick, and it shows. His mental state wasn’t the best; he didn’t realize how much he needed Nick until he was gone.

Oh, it's what you do to me.
Oh, it's what you do to me.
Oh, it's what you do to me.
Oh, it's what you do to me.
What you do to me

“Matt I know it’s getting hard, but believe me, I will give you the biggest hug when I see you.” Nick said while letting out a laugh, with Matt following shortly after. Matthew and Nick were better together; that’s how it’s always been, for actual years. The two were attached at the hip, and they knew they wouldn’t be able to leave each other’s side once they saw each other again. But that would be okay because no one would be complaining; like I said, it’s always been a normal thing.

But this time they really wouldn’t be able to be even in a separate room from each other. Both were excited to go back to the way they were and be able to just be in the same room, rather than on the phone. That was a comforting thought for the two. And frankly, it’s what kept them up at night.

Hey there, Delilah
I know times are getting' hard.
But just believe me, girl.
Someday, I'll pay the bills with this guitar.
We'll have it good.
We'll have the life we knew we would
My word is good.

"God, I have so many stories to tell you when I see you again. People ask for crazy tattoos, you know.” Nick said he was excited to share some of his experiences with Matt. He loved to talk about his job; it was one of his favorite topics. Now I know I have been describing how much Matt is in love with Nick. But Matt took Nick's breath away; he made his heart race. He felt like he was falling in love with Matt more by the second. Hearing Matt’s voice made him smile; to him, Matt sounded like the most beautiful thing in the world. Seeing Matt’s name made his heart skip a beat.

Hey there, Delilah
I've got so much left to say.
If every simple song I wrote to you
Would take your breath away.
I'd write it all.
Even more in love with me, you'd fall
We'd have it all.

Nick and Matt became more close sometime after high school; before that, it was Matt and Christ. Nick was always with someone he was friends with. But after high school, he felt more connected to his brothers, but specifically to Matt. His whole mindset changed about what he thought of Matt. For a long time, he wasn’t able to quite point it out. But now things are different. They were away from each other, which gave Nick a sickening feeling in his stomach. He hated being apart from Matt. He knew it would be bad, but he didn’t know it would be this bad.

Oh, it's what you do to me.
Oh, it's what you do to me.
Oh, it's what you do to me.
Oh, it's what you do to me.

Matt had been debating booking a plane ticket; hell, he was tempted to drive all the way from LA to New York. He would walk to Nick if there was no way of transportation. Matt does not even know how he survived school without Nick, and now in his mind, he can’t live without Nick. And Chris always makes fun of him for how attached he was to Nick; obviously, the teasing died down once Chris realized how much Matt really needed Nick. But in all honesty, Nick and Matt always laughed along with Chris because they both knew Chris had never felt this way about someone. But it wasn’t a bad thing.

"Nick, I promise you, by the time we no longer have distance between us, I will never leave your side.” Matthew spoke in a serious tone because he was serious. He meant it; in his mind, once he saw Nick again after being apart for so long, if he ever got separated from him again, he would have a heart attack. If Nick died, he died.

A thousand miles seems pretty far.
But they've got planes, trains, and cars.
I'd walk to you if I had no other way.
Our friends would all make fun of us.
And we'll just laugh along because we know
That none of them have felt this way.
Delilah, I can promise you
By the time we get through
The world will never be the same.
And you're to blame.

"Matt, don’t do anything to hurt yourself while I’m gone. I’ll be back, and you’ll be with me here very soon. 2 more weeks, and I’ll be with you on Christmas morning. I could even give you a new tattoo like I do.”. Nick said, smiling and lying his back down on the bed. “You know I only get tattoos because you do, so that means you have two weeks to decide what you’re giving me!” Matt let out a chuckle. It was true; he only started getting tattoos because Nick did. “I get to choose!” Nick said it with excitement in his voice.

He loved choosing tattoos for other people; it gave him a chance to describe how he thought of that person’s personality with just a tattoo. “You can do whatever you want to.” Matt said, sealing the deal. “Don’t worry, it will be something you like, just because I’m nice and not ass." Nick said this while laughing.

Hey there, Delilah
You be good, and don't you miss me?
Two more years, and you'll be done with school.
And I'll be making' history like I do.
You'll know it's all because of you.
We can do whatever we want to.
Hey there, Delilah, here's to you.
This one's for you.

Nick and Matt would see each other soon enough, and that was all there was to it. They were attached to one another, and there is nothing anyone could do to change that. The things they do to each other without even noticing.

Oh, it's what you do to me.
Oh, it's what you do to me.
Oh, it's what you do to me.
Oh, it's what you do to me.
What you do to me.
