Wishing on a thousand dandelions

Summary:

Mary knew from the second she saw that redhead girl with emerald eyes that she was ruined for anyone else.

Lily was it for her. She couldn't imagine loving anyone else.

The problem? Lily likes boys.

The other problem? Mary wasn't a boy, even if she really, really tried.

Or

I saw a tiktok with a TransMary(mtf) headcanon and wanted to write it.

Notes:

Purely did this for a tiktok that had a trans Mary hc so ofc I had to take one for the team and write it. Don't thank me, it's probably shit anyway.

Note: I'm cis so I have no idea how a trans person experiences their gender so if I get something wrong or say something that is complete nonsense please tell me.

A special thank you to all the people who hyped me up on tiktok and I apologize if this took long.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Mary knew from the second she saw that redhead girl with emerald eyes that she was ruined for anyone else.

How could she not love her?

Lily was perfect, as if God wanted to make their purest angel in human form and used stardust and sunlight to create Lily Evans.

Her brain and thoughts were just a repetition of her name.

She dreamed of her every night.

What would it be like to feel her lips onto hers, or Lily looking at her in the eyes and saying that she'd been in love with her the whole time, or holding hands with her with the knowledge that they're not just friends.

But Lily liked boys.

Not girls.

Boys.

And didn't that hurt?

Mary always felt she was different.

She didn't understand at first why she preferred looking at her older sister get ready, brushing her hair and tying them with a multitude of colored ribbons, rather then do what her brothers did.

She had begged and begged her mother to let her hair grow out. She was reluctant at first but pushed it aside when she saw how happy it made her.

She was eight years old when she demanded for everyone to call her Mary.

It sounded good.

She loved looking at the mirror and saying 'I am Mary McDonald'.

She loved how the name felt so natural and how well it rolled on her tongue.

For as long as she remembers, she had loved dandelions.

Watching as the seeds would fly into the wind almost as their were sending her wish somewhere where it would become reality.

She blew the dandelion.

Wish number 1: I want to be a girl.

Wish number 75: I want a doll for Christmas just like my big sister.

Wish number 154: I want my little brothers to stop being so annoying.

Wish number 250: I want that pretty girl with red hair to be my friend.

"This is painful" Marlene declared after she'd done listening to yet another one of Mary's rants.

"I watched you hate on Dorcas for years and then caught you making out on my bed, you owe me this"

Marlene looked like she wanted to protest but choose not to.

"I just don't get why you don't just talk to her you know? I know for a fact she feels the same so just grow some balls and ask her out."

Mary snorted.

"That's not what I mean and you know it." She huffed "Just look at me and Cas, we wasted so much time because all the pent up hate was just repressed sexual tension."

"It's not the same for me, thought."

Marlene stared at her with a longing look, almost as to say I know what you mean but I know you hate talking about it so I won't.

Mary loved Marlene, very much.

She was the only person she could be totally and completely honest to, the one person who she knew wouldn't judge her. The only person who knows about her being trans.

It was a word Mary learned because of her, actually.

Marlene didn't turn her away like she'd expected but instead made research after research and showed her that there were other people out there who felt the same as her.

Who were like her.

"It's just-" Mary sighed "-sometimes I think that if I just kept being a boy Lily would like me"

She looked away "God I'm so selfish."

"Oh love, that's not-" Marlene took Mary's hands in hers.

"Transitioning saved your life, it makes you happy and you deserve someone who loves you for who you are, not for someone you pretend to be." They both smiled.

"Ugh, what would I do without you?"

"Probably die, now go get the girl."

Silence, then-

"If I get rejected, which is very likely, you're going to let me borrow everything I want of yours for forever."

"For forever?"

"For forever."

"Alright fine, just go talk to her."

"Fine."

"Good."

"I hate you."

"No you don't, you love me very much."

Wish 997: I want Marlene McKinnon to be my friend for forever.

Wish 998: I want to be Lily Evans's girlfriend.

Mary watched as the seeds flew into the air and headed back to their dorm where she knew Lily would be.

She decided to pretend everything was ok at first.

She listened Lily rant about the new book she'd been reading.

She looked as her red hair smelled like her strawberry shampoo and how they fell into Lily's face.

She looked at her freckles. Her adorable freckles that looked like drops of honey that she just wanted to kiss and kiss and kiss until her lips hurt.

She wanted to see that smile, that beautiful Lily Evans smile directed at her.

She wanted to hold her close and never let go.

"Sorry, I didn't even ask you how you were, Mar, so how are you?" It was moments like this where Mary's heart just exploded.

She wanted to nothing more to kiss Lily in that moment.

She didn't thought, of course.

"I-I'm fine" God what is wrong with you McDonald? the

"Are you sure? You look a little pale." Lily cupped her face with one hand and kept caressing her cheek like it was the most precious thing in the world and for Mary evidently it was too much so she just blurted out-

"I'm in love with you."

"What?" Oh, oh she didn't feel the same, too late now.

"I've been in love with you for months and I've been trying to tell you but-"

Lily kissed her.

Mary was pretty sure she died because this was probably heaven.

God may forgive her because she was having very specific thoughts at that moment.

"God finally, took you long enough uh?"

"W-what?"

"I've been waiting for you to confess. I dropped so many hints. I pretended to like guys to make you jealous" Lily laughed at the last sentence.

"You succeeded actually." Lily smiled even brighter and Mary just wanted to swallow her whole and carve her name on her chest.

They kissed, and kissed, and kissed.

Wish 999: I want this to never end.

"Wait- Lils?"

"Hmm?"

"I have to tell you something."

Lily looked at her, her lips still swollen and it took all Mary's self control just to not kiss them again and again and again-

"I'm trans, I was born a boy and I hated it and I didn't tell you because I was scared that you wouldn't like me anymore or that you would but you wouldn't-"

Oh.

Oh shit.

Lily smiled again, a softer one this time.

It was full of fondness and love.

"Thank you for telling me" Lily said "Now, if you don't mind I'd like to go back to what we were doing earlier."

Mary blinked.

"Am I dead? Is this heaven?"

"If you were dead, I'd fight God for them to let you back on earth, back to me"

And someone help Mary because she was only human and words failed her and she just wanted to feel Lily.

Lily probably understood and kissed her again.

And they laughed.

And cried.

And talked.

And kissed a lot.

For all the time they missed, for all the time they have ahead of them.

For all what could have gone wrong but didn't.

For all the good things that might happen.

The next day, Mary picked up a dandelion.

Wish 1000: I never want to live another day where we don't love each other.

She'd remember with fondness the moment she realized all her wishes came true.

"Soo? How did it go?"

"You won't have to let me borrow your things"

"I knew it!"

Notes:

And boom, done.

I wrote this instead of studying so if I get a bad grade it's y'all's fault.

Thank you for pushing through this atrocity.
