Work Text:

Astrid paces on the front porch of the Haddock home. The light night breeze ruffling her bangs. Goosebumps form on the bare skin of her forearms, the thin fabric of her nightgown making her colder.

Her eyes scan where the sky meets the ocean in search of a small boat. The boat with her whole life on it. The boat with her husband on it.

A week ago, Hiccup had gone to a neighboring tribe for business, Gobber and Eret accompanied him. The trip was only supposed to last for five days.

He’s only two days late but anything could’ve happened in the short time it took to come home. To come to her. Astrid would have gone but Hiccup insisted New Berk would need her watchful and vigilant eye over it, so she stayed chiefting with the help of Valka.

Astrid sighs, slowly sitting down on the first step to their door, the cool grass tickles the ball of her foot and she sighs just short of contently.

She’s so adamant for his return because she has big news. She’d fallen ill a few days after his departure and just recently went to see Gothi. At the thought she subconsciously brings her palm to rest on the imperceptible pouch of her uterus.

She can't stand Hiccup not knowing and she craves affection. She doesn't think she can handle another day waking up alone.

A sail. A brown sail comes into view, Astrids heart leaps into her throat as the familiar boat comes closer and closer to their island. By sunrise it would be here, Hiccup would be coming straight home to her. So Astrid smiles, leaning over to make an arm pillow on the chilled wood of their porch, closing her eyes and letting exhaustion consume her.

………

Sunlight casts a warm blanket over Astrid; she basks in it until a hand comes down on her shoulder and a shadow blocks her sunlight. She slowly opens her heavy eyelids to be met with green orbs and the lopsided grin that makes her heart soar.

“Hiccup!” Astrid sits up immediately, ignoring the dizzy spell and jumping to her feat. She looks over him for a second, taking him in before wrapping her arms around his shoulder, burying her face into the crook of his neck, inhaling deeply.

The familiar smell of leather and smoke fill her lungs with a tinge of sea salt, complex parts of his leather suit dig into her skin. He reciprocates her embrace, dropping his bag with a thump.

“What are you doing out here, you're going to catch your death.” Hiccup chuckles, his fingers skimming the small of her back. “I was waiting for you.” Is Astrid’s muffled reply. “I missed you so much.”

She pulls back grinning ear to ear. He looks at her with deep compassion and love, leaning in to place a longing kiss on her lips, confirming the look in his eyes.

“I missed you too, Astrid.” He says pulling back for air.

“So,” he kisses the tip of her nose. “Much.” Pecking her cheek.

“Let's go inside, I need to tell you something.” Astrid chews on her lip, taking Hiccup by the hand and dragging him into their cold house. After getting a fire started and starting on breakfast, Astrid sits down at the table next to him and watches as he eats while she drinks a cup of tea to help ease her stomach.

“So, what did you have to tell me?” Hiccup says looking up at her.

Astrid takes a deep breath stealing her nerves, setting down the mug, she looks at him.

“I'm pregnant. You're going to be a father.” She can't help the little anxious smile that plays at the corner of her lips.

Hiccup sits there, gaping slightly at her, eyebrows disappearing under his bangs and the fork of food, halfway to his mouth, hangs in the air. Gradually his eyes widen as if he’s just now comprehending what she’s just said.

Astrid wrings her fingers in her lap, waiting for him to react. And he does. Seemingly gaining his composure back. He sets the fork down, staring at his plate for a moment. The screeching of wood against wood is heard as he stands, pushing his chair back.

He walks over to her, tilting her chair outwards to face him, he kneels in front of her.

She looks down at him. Wordlessly she can see millions of emotions in his gaze. Fear, joy, love, excitement and something new; unrecognizable.

His hands slowly extend to her face, his thumbs rubbing her temple before pulling her down in an overwhelming kiss. He molds his lips perfectly with hers, telling her everything he wants to say. Pulling away with tears in his eyes his gaze flickers to her flat stomach, and he places a peck through the fabric.

“I'm going to be a father.” He echos.

Astrid nods, a tear cascading down her cheek, catching on Hiccup's thumb. “I love you Astrid. I love with a love I didn't know could possibly be stronger than the love I had for you before.”

He says, and All of Astrid's fears and doubts disappear in that moment because, this, is everything.
