Work Text:

it’s been a dreary, pain in the ass weak. if there was any time yakou wanted to walk in a bar and say “thank god for friday,” it would have been today. that is, if his boyfriend wasn’t the type to smack his glasses right off his face for drinking. in a way, it was nice. there were a lot of things in yakou’s life again that just… reminded him of her. the good parts of her, that made him want to go on. maybe she was the one who sent down an angel for him.

vivia twilight was an angel, alright. the textbook, to the letter, walking mirriam-webster definition of one. witty, crafty, wise, nice to look at, and most of all, really looked out for yakou. it was nice to have someone like that again. it was nice to be cared about.

so when yakou came into his submarine, drenched in rainwater and about to lose his mind for just a pathetic sniff’s worth of nicotine, there was another thing that defined vivia perfectly: a sight for sore eyes.

it was nothing short of romantic to observe vivia. unfortunately for yakou, it was also very distracting. he found himself constantly staring at vivia, even when the master detective was still for hours on end. his pale piano fingers as they turned the thin, weary pages of his book, and the way his eyes widened upon reading some scandalous sentence in the passage. those eyes… they were what gave vivia’s last name any meaning. they were twilight. a pair of dark, glimmering amethysts, surrounded by long, dark pointed lashes. when yakou looked in them long enough, he swore he could see shooting stars.

the submarine was mostly clean, and the way yakou left it this morning, except the small faux pine tree in the corner seemed to be more decorated than it was before. it had white and gold decor on it, or at least, yakou didn’t remember getting any silver tinsel. glancing around, yakou saw that vivia was in the fireplace, the usual spot, his face down as he read a book with weathered beige pages. upon hearing yakou clear his throat, though, vivia craned his neck out of the shadowy crevice with a smile. “you’re back early.”

“early?” yakou echoed. “i was out forever, it seems like.” yakou almost makes himself jump from pain, having been so enthralled by vivia’s presence that he had been biting the inside of his cheek. vivia was just so distracting, it was like he was a mirage of yakou’s inner fantasies. except, yakou wasn’t dehydrated, suffering from heat stroke, or within any sort of proximity of the dry heat of the sun - vivia was a real person.

“forever hasn’t happened yet.” vivia disappeared back into the fireplace, then slowly emerged from the shadows. like a gift, handmade for yakou on his ideal christmas morning. vivia was a special treat, all by himself, without needing to do anything. maybe yakou had lost his moon, but he’d stumbled upon the lunar eclipse. smiling, and noticing vivia returned his smile, he lifted his arms to embrace the master detective’s approach, giving his partner a kiss on the cheek, before the two of them sat on the purple checkered couch together. “how was work today?”

“i’m still itching to just close this case already. just thinking about picking up another piece of evidence makes me want to hide.” yakou pathetically whined as vivia nuzzled into his neck. he wasn’t sure if he imagined vivia’s sharp inhale.

with a hum, vivia looked into yakou’s eyes again, tucking back his bangs to have a better look. “how droll.” he chuckled lightly.

dramatically sighing, yakou hangs his head, resting his forehead on vivia’s shoulder with an added, still dramatic and drawn out, whine of exhaustion. “i miss when the only cases i got was looking for people’s stupid runaway cats.” he whimpered. he felt vivia’s fingers on his shoulders tighten, pushing him off only slightly, so the man could cup his chin in his fingers. yakou felt his heart lurch, his mouth water, his knees weak, and most of all, his brain completely went empty. maybe vivia was able to see every coherent thought yakou could possibly have, leaking out of his ears like unaccompanied faucets. the detective hasn’t felt like this in a long time; like tempered chocolate chilling in the fridge, about to crack from the slightest pressure.

“darling.” vivia’s lighthearted chuckle snapped yakou out of his thoughts. he could have sworn vivia had scooted a little closer. the master detective was now wearing a playful smirk, and a flirty glare that almost gave yakou a heart attack from how pretty it was. “are you listening?”

laughing nervously, but deciding to act smooth, yakou leaned forward and looked at vivia with an arched eyebrow. “no. you’re too pretty.” he told the truth.

with a breathless giggle, vivia broke eye contact and looked away, shaking his head. his entire expression was hidden from yakou by vivia’s hair, except for a wide smile. suddenly, before yakou’s satisfaction could make him smug, vivia shot to his feet and grabbed yakou’s hands, attempting to pull him up. “come here, you big lug.”

“wha-?” yakou hurriedly stood up, almost tripping over his own feet.

“come dance with me.” vivia pulled yakou to the center of the sub. with his hips and knees, he pushed some of the furniture out of the way to clear up some space.

“but there’s no music.” yakou muttered. still with that stupid mischievous smirk on his face, vivia tugged yakou even closer to him.

“you’re the only music i need.” vivia wraps his arms around yakou’s body, and he feels flooded with warmth. vivia’s smile is so radiant, it’s almost blinding, and yakou can’t help but smile too as vivia’s feet start to move. he follows, feeling like his cheeks are hurting. “tell me about your day, my rose.”

yakou groaned just thinking about it. “awful.” he noticed how vivia’s head tilted ever so slightly. “baby, this weaning off cigarettes thing is killing me. not drinking as much i can do-”

“you’ll be fine.” vivia cooed nonchalantly. “go on.”

yakou sighs, more like a shorthanded huff. “i just feel like i could have smoked the stress off.”

calmly, vivia shakes his head, slow as pouring raw honey. “no.” he responds. “you would have just smoked your way through it just hoping you look cool.” before yakou could respond with more than a surprised and partially offended yelp, vivia coolly winks, fully disarming yakou’s brain again. that really needs to stop happening. “it is not good for you, and you’ve stopped coughing at night.”

yakou nearly flinched, confused by the statement. “but i thought you fell asleep right away?” he’s left with a lack of words as vivia lightly laughs.

“you think a lot of things, yakou.” vivia suddenly pulls yakou in tightly and twists his waist, effectively dipping the sapphire-haired detective. “you should at least think of yourself as a lovely dance partner.”

when vivia stood him straight, yakou’s head felt like the inside of a christmas ornament. “w-wouldn’t i be better if we had at least some christmas music on?”

vivia lifted his arms slowly, to cup yakou’s face and pull him into a soft, sweet kiss. yakou’s brain felt like a shorted circuit, his heart like fireworks. chuckling again, vivia pulled away and looked at yakou with half-lidded eyes. he really should have a hazard sign for being so damn pretty. “yakou.” he whispered tenderly, drawing his thumb over yakou’s lips. “the only thing that would make this moment better is if it never ended.”
