Laura Peterson has been shivering since she woke to the recovery room. Carol Hathaway, her cousin, had been close at hand, promising she was safe. It was only when Laura begin to cry that Carol leaves, seeking out someone to tell Laura precisely what happened.
Elizabeth Corday, her surgeon, follows Carol back into the room and Elizabeth settles close on the edge of the bed, talking Laura through what happened after sending Carol in search of blankets, gently wrapping the shivering woman in her arms.
Later, much later, Carol will find herself watching as Elizabeth wraps an arm around Laura, kissing her cheek as they finally come clean. Laura moved on from Bradley and Elizabeth is perfect for her, protectively sweet.
