Work Text:

Wormwood would never be that person to just straight up pick a flower. Many others have done it, but every time he had the will power to, remorse filled his little head. It would be an understatement to not call little Wormwood not just caring, especially near plants. He protects them with all his heart, since they’re the bestest friends he’s ever known.

Wormwood had mainly just been made when he stepped into the light of the Don’t Starve world. It would have been practically darkness. Just seeing everything around him amazed him. Even the little creatures around! There was a bouncy squee hopper, a rabbit, which was a tiny bit of a normal sighting, however, every time he went near it, it just scurried away, squealing. He always liked to try and catch them with some traps. Then, there stood the things that have wings.. He couldn’t fly with them, but, it was always worth a try. Maybe.

Wormwood was always a happy little fellow... but, sadly, the fellow was alone. He never liked being alone in the first place, so, he practically camped near as much rabbits as possible, taking food and putting them around the rabbits to draw them near for company.. he felt like maybe if they were given a chance, maybe they could become a part of them too... Unless, he could try a disguise maybe? Suddenly, he had a not so smart idea. Those muffs that were made were made out of fur, maybe he would blend in if he wore those..? He had to risk some friends, though.. it would be hard, but he would try to not think about it as much. He risked two for some earmuffs and tried blending in. Per say, he blended in way farther than close. Off they were, squealing, and squirming off.

He sat near the fire pit, disappointed. There goes another shot at making a friend.

He decided to cook some berries near the not-so bright fire (precaution reasons), and decided to maybe use the newly made tents. As night approached, he made sure he had a full stomach, saying good night to the planted seeds of friends around him before gently snuggling into the tent. Night was nearing, especially in the somehow burning fire. There was been darkness, even silence throughout the nights, but maybe this one would be different. He had been sleeping for nearly half of the night, until...

He heard footsteps.

He wasn’t bothered by it yet, he was still asleep since it wasn’t so near. Then, a torch was lit. Not so far but not so loud. The foot steps seemed to be getting closer. He hadn’t noticed yet still. Or, maybe because he was too afraid to look. The footsteps had stopped on where he was. He froze, he tried not making a sound so the person would leave, but they didn’t. The person walked around, looking in his fridge, snooping in the chest. Quite sudden. They didn’t seem to take anything. There was just a quick glance, and that’s it. He tried acting asleep when he heard the fire be fueled. There were small whispers, kind of adding a small tone of the creeped out factor. He’s never heard someone come around to him, even speak to him as a regular person. But, just like that, day time looped around, the sun looming as it signaled release, or, for mainly the ones with it. He was forced to come out of the tent, mainly because he didn’t want to hog it for the potential guest, but he kept wishing he would go back before seeing the person. Maybe, it could be a new friend? No matter anymore, he guessed. He practically limbo’d into the light, where the person turned to see the rised plant, Wormwood.

The person had never seen such a plant. Maybe it’s been around here..? The person looked a bit more smaller, but size never mattered, as long as he blended in nearly good at least. He was hunched still and slowly got up when seeing the.. smaller friend, he assumed. A child was never spoken of, or a word he knew besides “little one”, until that time happened. Nonetheless, he smiled at the child. She had some frizzy ponytails, with a white shirt and a red skirt. Her face looked tired, as she tilted her head at him as she sat near the fire. He did a tiny wave before something going next to him, then to the girl. She looked exactly like her, well, her eyes did, anyway. The girl was actually a ghost. A pale and transparent glowy ghost. She floated around Wormwood, whispers and light coming from her as she loomed around him. ‘She might’ve been making the spooky noises’, he thought not very long after seeing the floaty friend.

“…Hello.”

She looked very firm into his eyes. It was kind of creepy, but he didn’t really care. She wasn’t running away, so that might be a good sign. “I guess there are more out here...” she mumbled quite loud, sounded it was on purpose a tad bit. “So... I assume you’ve been around for a while?” She straightened her head and promptly began to sit up from the fire.

“Yeah!” He happily shouted. “Name Wormwood.” He stated quite proudly.

“Cheerful one, are you?” She squinted and stared a bit before saying. “I’m Wendy. That’s my twin sister, Abigail.” He looked at the floaty sister friend. She twirled a bit as he stared for a few seconds, maybe as a friendly little greeting..?

Wendy adjusted her backpack straps and turned her back to him. “Well.... uh... it’s been nice... speaking for a few seconds...” Her voice toned down a bit while saying the sentence. This was truly awkward. Then, she began to leave.

“Friend not staying...?” He asked.

“Oh.. no. I already have a base..” She began to walk a few more steps before catching on to what he wanted. She turned around. She hesitated, thinking about it. She glanced around to pick up some thoughts before something caught her eye. She soon noticed the planted seeds around the area, crouching to one of them nearby.

“…Did you do all this?” She asked. Her voice sounded softer than before.

“Yeah!” He nods happily. “Plant friends!”

She thought for a moment. Maybe he could be somewhat useful, until she gets the right gardening supplies anyway. She then sighed, standing up and turning to him.

“Would you perhaps like to come with us...?”

Without hesitation he’d screamed “Yes!” While jumping up and down rapidly. and began packing all of his things. He brought many seeds and took various healing items that benefit him from the chests before hammering them down, well, mainly poop. He turned to his planted seeds before waving at them.

“Will come back to visit, friends!”

He then hurried along, somewhat carrying everything he needed. He waited for some sort of signal. She looked a bit peeved he didn’t just shovel the damn things, but she was too tired and frankly too hungry to care. She jerked her head a small bit to the right, signaling a moving sign of some sort. He nodded, and she followed the way onto the land of more friends.
