Only thing that keeps us apart is a different timezone

Summary:

Taehyung and Jimin are separated for the Christmas holidays for the first time due to work commitments. They both miss each other a lot but can't do anything about it.

Inspired by the song Timezone by Måneskin.

Notes:

This is my little Christmas present, I hope you like it!

Work Text:

You're wearing my old clothes, but you, you wear it better
And every time I see your face, the moon should be jealous
And I keep talking to the wall 'til he's a friend of mine
I call you every hour just to tell you that I'm losing my mind

"I miss you."

“I miss you a lot too, I wish you were here with me.”

"When are you coming back?"

"In two weeks."

“Oh, I thought you could be here for Christmas…”

“I'm sorry, Mimi. I have another photoshoot in New York.”

“Don't be sorry, it's okay. It's our job."

“Is that my shirt you're wearing?”

"Oh yes! I got it the last time I was at your house, I'll bring it back to you as soon as possible."

“Don't worry, love, you can keep it too. It looks much better on you."

The videocall with his boyfriend was destroying his heart. He knew how much he wanted to spend the holidays together and he didn't like the fact that he couldn't be there that year at all. Taehyung was in Los Angeles recording a new song before heading to New York for other commitments. The only place where he wanted to be, however, was his house in Seoul, more precisely on his large sofa hugging Jimin under the warm blankets and with Yeontan next to them.

Their group was on a hiatus and everyone was engaging in solo activities. The bad thing was that his commitments were precisely in those December days. He wouldn't even be able to be home for his birthday. This thing wasn't as serious as it might seem, in the end he could have celebrated a few days late too. Yet, being away from his boyfriend was slowly destroying him. In the videocall he tried not to show his true thoughts and emotions so as not to sadden Jimin even more who instead couldn't hide his displeased look.

"You're beautiful."

“You are too Tae-ah!”

“Yes, but you more.”

"What do you say?! We both know that's a lie."

“I have never been so serious. You are the most beautiful thing there is, even the moon should be jealous of you."

“Are you trying to make me forget that you won't be here for the holidays? Because if so, you're not succeeding, but I still appreciate the effort."

“I wish I could be with you this very moment.”

“I would like it too, but it's a bit difficult. I see the manager behind you calling you. You should go."

“I should, but I don't want to.”

“Tae, don't be like that. You make everything even more difficult than it already is.”

“I'll call you as soon as I finish.”

“You call me almost every hour. Try getting some rest or having fun. It's not just me that exists."

“For me yes, for me only you exist.”

“I love you, Taehyungie.”

"I love you, my love."

Now I know you're sleeping
Where I'm supposed to be in
Wish I could've stayed

It was five in the morning in Korea and Jimin was sleeping. It was midday in Los Angeles and Taehyung was having lunch with the staff. He was a little restless. For him that was a dead time. There were three days until Christmas and the only thing he could think about was the Christmas dinner that his friends were organizing and that he would miss. He wanted to call Jimin to see how the organization was progressing. When his boyfriend woke up, he would be busy recording and wouldn't be able to talk to him or wish him a good day. He usually loved traveling for work, but this time he just couldn't enjoy anything. His mind was constantly at home.

When all seven traveled together it was very different. They did many things, they certainly got tired, they worked a lot, but they always found a way to have fun. This time he missed the company. It wasn't the first time this had happened, but he knew he would never get used to this difference.

Sometimes he stopped to reflect on whether he had done the right thing in accepting this job in this period. He would have preferred to stay at home.

Only thing that keeps us apart
Is seven thousand miles, running like a mad dog
Only thing that keeps us apart
Is a different timezone
So fuck what I'm dreaming, this fame has no meaning
I'm coming home
Only thing that keeps us apart
Is a different timezone

Was it really that important to chase fame? Or was it more important to be with your loved ones? His whole life had been busy chasing his dream, just as the other members had done too. But at the end of the day, was this the most important thing or the relationships that had been created along the way?

Miles away from home, separated by different time zones, he found himself wondering if any of this really mattered. The answer he came to was that, as important as his dream was and as much as his fame meant to his work, his family, who was waiting for him, was much more important. Jimin was waiting for him. Work would wait for him for once.

He had to go home.

Tomorrow I got another plane, I'm not gonna take it
Instead, I'm gonna fly straight to you, I paid double for the tickets
And I don't give a shit about the contracts that I signed
And they can say whatever, we'll be making love, I'm fucking you tonight

The next day he had a plane to New York. He had decided that he wouldn't take it after spending the whole night thinking about it. He didn't care how angry the higher-ups would get. He would leave again after a week and would make up for all the commitments that he would have missed.

Plane tickets were very difficult to find since it was Christmas and they were exorbitantly priced. This didn't matter to him either, he would have spent whatever it took to get back to his house.

In a few hours he would be in his apartment in Seoul and would hold his boyfriend tightly in his arms. They would make up for the lost time caused by the last few weeks of distance. He would kiss those heavenly lips he had, he would caress his red cheeks, he would smell his soft skin. They would make love until they no longer had the strength to continue, too exhausted to even get out of bed.

So fuck what I'm dreaming, this fame has no meaning
I'm coming home
Only thing that keeps us apart
Is a different timezone

When he opened the door of his house, he saw that there were some lights on. His plan was to leave his bags and go to Jimin's house right away, but apparently, his boyfriend would have to wait.

He took an umbrella that he had left at the entrance some time ago and began to enter his own house. He heard the intruder humming in the kitchen.

Just before reaching the room, he realized that perhaps it wasn't a thief. He could smell a good smell starting to spread throughout the house. At this point he decided to stop for a moment and reflect on the situation. Wasn't that voice familiar to him? Maybe even too much?

“Jimin.”

The boy in question was scared when he heard his name and almost dropped the plate he was holding. He didn't expect to have company. He turned to face the person who had called him and was stunned.

“Tae!”

He couldn't believe his eyes. He had spoken to him on the phone shortly before, convinced that he had just landed at New York airport and not in Korea. He had wished so much that he could return home at least for the holidays and so that they could spend his birthday together, but by now he had lost hope.

His eyes began to fill with tears and his lip trembled slightly. If it was a dream, he prayed he wouldn't wake up until Taehyung was actually in front of him.

“What are you still doing there, won't you welcome me home?”

That was enough for him to understand that it wasn't a dream, that it was all real and that he was there. He threw himself into his arms and buried his face in the other's neck to feel its warmth. Finally, he could warm his heart which had become cold from too much time spent away from his partner.

He kissed him with tears in his eyes, but he wasn't the only one because a single tear fell from Taehyung's eyes too. It was all so beautiful and true that they wanted to enjoy every moment.

“Shouldn't you be on the other side of the globe right now?”

“I'm right where I'm supposed to be. In your arms."

They both smiled before exchanging a few fleeting kisses.

“What are you doing here?”

“I was making some cookies to bring to Christmas dinner tomorrow. We usually always make them at your house and I didn't want to break the tradition.”

“Well, that's what that delicious scent I smelled was.”

“I'm sorry I made a mess all over your kitchen and didn't even warn you. You were on the plane and I couldn't wait for your response."

“Don't worry, my love. In fact, I thank you because this way you will save me from having to drive to your house since you are already here.”

It was lucky that Jimin had already baked his cookies because they both soon forgot about it too busy with other activities. It was Christmas Eve and they would have respected their tradition that year too.

But above all they were together, and that was what mattered.
