Work Text:
Hitoshi slips into the apartment past midnight, barely able to make his feet move after working a 24 hour stake out job. He moves with half his brain shut off, changing his clothes and crawling into the bed. The dull ache of his mating bite immediately dissipates as soon as he smells Katsuki, and he blankets his body over his. Hitoshi tucks his legs between his, and the other’s legs instinctively spread to give him room.
He'd always laughed at people saying reuniting with their mate was like coming home, but he can't deny that he realizes how displaced his existence had been when it clicks back into place when he burrows his face into the crook of Katsuki’s neck. Katsuki’s arm is sluggish from sleep when he sifts his fingers through Hitoshi’s hair, and the wordless greeting makes his alpha hum with content. The steady breathing of Katsuki’s lungs lulls him into a drifting haze, and Hitoshi waits for his cinnamon and clove scent seap into his skin.
His eyebrows furrow when he picks a faint difference, and he twists his head to let his breath ghost over Katsuki’s neck.
"Why do you smell like milk?"
"What?" His voice is raspy, too loud compared to Hitoshi's hushed whisper.
"I smell milk on you, did you go over to see Eijirou and the new baby?"
"No, I've been working. You're just imagining shit. Go to bed."
Hitoshi can't let it go. It's like his alpha brain picked up an important trail, and he nuzzles closer to the gland. Katsuki sighs like he's indulging him, exposing his throat to him more. The more he drowns himself in the sweetened pheromones, a chanting in the back of his head slowly gets louder.
Pups, ours, protect.
As soon as the realization hits him, Hitoshi knows, like his alpha instincts have some superhuman ability to detect it. It's really not that far fetched, both of them can pick up even the subtlest shifts in each other's scents when their emotions change or when they are sick.
"Katsuki." He squeezes his hip, trying to convince his suddenly frantic heartbeat to settle down. "I think you're pregnant."
He stiffens beneath him, and Katsuki’s grip on his hair tightens like Hitoshi is the only reason he's still tethered to reality.
"Shut the fuck up, I am not." His tone is pleading, as if he's trying to convince himself the same thing, and the bitter scent of fear starts creeping in.
Hitoshi croons at him, pumping out calming pheromones and letting more of his weight to rest on him for reassurance. Heavy silence ticks by while he waits for Katsuki to gather his bearings, and Hitoshi reigns in his own excitement and uncertainty to avoid overwhelming him.
"I've been so fucking exhausted the last few days," he admits. "My tits hurt and I haven't been this impatient with people since high school."
"I can rub your nipples if you want."
It makes Katsuki bark out a laugh, successfully cutting through the tension. Hitoshi rolls them over, and Katsuki curls into his chest. He'll probably wake up and think this was a fever dream, at least until he smells Katsuki again.
"I can't believe we're gonna be parents. I'm sure I'll have a crisis about it later when I have more energy."
His hand tentatively finds its way to Katsuki’s abdomen, and the swell of confusing emotions threaten to constric his throat. He's happy and excited, regardless that it isn't planned, but the wave of insecurity swirls around it. What if he sucks at it? He doesn't really know the first thing about being a father, is he going to fuck the kid up by accident?
Katsuki’s soothing pheromones draw him out of his spiral.
"You sure you aren't doing that right now," he grunts.
"Nope," he denies.
Katsuki’s fingers thread through his, pressing their hands firmer against his abdomen, and Hitoshi is consumed by affection for his mate and unborn pup.
"We'll figure it out together."
