Work Text:

nervous—

Dewey took a deep breath, feathered fingers hovering mere inches away from the phone while his other feathered fingers held onto the phone number.

And then—

Dewey took a deep breath, looking at the bedroom he shared with his brothers. He walked over as the music blared and opened the door. “Hey. Could you not play the music so loud? I’m trying to make a phone call.”

Huey held up his fingers to his brain. “What? To the rest of your geek squad that you met at science camp this summer?”

Dewey frowned. “No, actually. Well, kind of, but not really.” He watched Louie twirl a ball between feathered hands as the other triplet observed. “So…”

Nope.” Huey turned it up louder, then went back to relaxing.

And then—

Uncle Donald went off, causing Dewey to chuckle to himself before heading to the phone, feathered fingers hovering mere inches away from the phone again as his uncle stomped around, having slammed the door to the room, and then—

Who are you calling?”

Dewey froze, then said. “A girl?”

A girl?”

Webby,” and then. “You remember Webby Vanderquack, right?”

Donald calmed. “The granddaughter of Uncle Scrooge’s housekeeper.”

Yeah,” Dewey said. “I ran into her at summer camp.” He swallowed. “And, um…”

Donald frowned. “It’s nice that you’re catching up with an old friend.” And then—

Hey!” Dewey said, as Donald decided Huey and Louie should catch up as well, and—

Huey, of course, figured it out. “So, wait. Dewey is talking to a girl?”

Webby,” Donald repeated. “He’s catching up with Webby.”

I think he’s doing more than,” Huey said, coming out, feathered hands in his pocket as Louie followed, looking amused. Then, Huey snatched the phone number from his hand. “So this is the number?” And then he was dialing up the phone, putting it on speaker.

Hello?”

Webby?”

This is Webby Vanderquack, yes.”

Huey Duck speaking,” he said. “So, did my nerdy brother fall in love with a nerd?

Huey!” Dewey hissed. “Stop that.”

I bet you’re all nerdy, with nerdy pink…”

Stop being a bully, Hubert Duck,” Webby said, using his full name.

And then—

Would you like to come over and have lunch with the boys?” Donald asked, taking the phone. “And catch up.”

Another pause, then—

Sure! I’d love to come have lunch with my boyfriend’s family.” And then—

Webby hung up, and Donald stared, confused.

Dewey took a deep breath, waiting for his uncle to lose it, given he ’d not talked to Donald about dating anyone. Louie piped up. “Well, better Dewey than Huey, given Huey’s track record?”

Yeah. Well, nerds,” Huey said, rolling his eyes. “Not the type of girl I’d date.” He then slapped Dewey on the back. “But good luck with that, you and your weird, nerdy relationship.”

You used to be a nerd yourself,” Dewey said firmly, causing Huey to look at him horrified. “I mean, you certainly nerded out over Woodchucks.”

You,” Huey said, glaring at his brother. “Don’t forget Uncle Donald dropped your egg.”

Hey,” Louie said. “I’m not supposed to be the normal one.”

I should prepare lunch,” Donald said.

Hold on!” Huey said. “You’re not freaking out that Dewey is dating someone.”

Well, he’s not you,” Louie said.

The only reason he’s got a girlfriend is because she’s a nerd and can’t get anyone else.”

That,” Dewey said. And then, “I’d love to see you say that to Webby’s face.” He shook his head.

Sure I will,” Huey said.

Are you sure,” Louie said. “Don’t you remember?”

Huh?”

That she could hold her own with us?” Dewey said, knowing where Louie was coming from, which was strange as he’d always stayed away from academics, but then they were, when they didn’t style their hair differently, identical, thus the need for different colored shirts. Or not at all if they wanted to drive their uncle nuts.

A knock came at the door, and Huey hurried over. Dewey didn ’t move but watched and then heard his brother stammer. “W-Webby?”

He sighed, heading to set the table as Donald continued making lunch. Louie watched Webby come in, then said, “Hello, Uncle Donald.”

Under her arm was a notebook, while Huey stood behind her, beak dropped.

Uh…”

And then—

Wait! I thought you were a nerd!”

I am. I attended science camp, didn’t I?” Webby said.

But you’re hot.”

Donald turned, then pointed his spatula. “No hanky panky.”

No science experiements?” Webby batted her eyes.

None that should wait until marriage.”

She nodded her head in understanding while Huey continued staring. “And you can stop staring at Huebert Duck.”

What? How?” He pointed at Dewey. “He’s a nerd!”

A rather cute nerd,” Webby said. “But being a nerd—why does everyone have to stereotype us nerds?”

Because he stopped being a nerd?” Louie said, helping Dewey finish, watching her pull out her notebook so she and Dewey could talk over the various things she’d pulled together as she said she would, but Louie moved closer.

Donald frowned, then pointed to his spatula. “No adventuring without Uncle Scrooge!”

Uh, yeah?” Webby said.

Isn’t this a popular television show?” Louie asked. “What was it called?”

Don’t hurt your head,” Huey said, taking a seat and glaring at his brother. “Nerds.”

Be nice,” Donald said, serving up lunch as Dewey and Webby continued talking about their favorite things to nerd out over.
