Chapter Text
He had been warned time and time again. He was constantly told to leave his battles to his army and generals. But of course, Jahyeon didn't listen. Just like any other battle, he dove head first into the conflict, leading the charge on behalf of the country he had come to rule many years ago. But this time, his arrogance and complete disregard for his own safety caught up to him. There on the battlefield, Jahyeon lays bleeding from many injuries, the cries of men and the clashing of swords drowning out everything but his own thoughts.
'So this is it, huh?' Jahyeon thinks, somehow absentmindedly staring up at the sky.
Even on the brink of death, he is oddly enough very calm at the moment. In fact, Jahyeon feels more at ease than he has been in a long time. Perhaps because he'll no longer have to live with so much responsibility on his shoulders as a king and soldier. Or, in all honesty, perhaps it's because he'll finally be able to say goodbye to all his grief and guilt...when it came to 'her'.
'Well, I always knew my time was limited. I figured I'd meet my end sooner rather than later. I became the king, lived how I wanted, I have no regrets...No. That's not really true.' Jahyeon mentally laments, doing his best to take in shaky breaths.
With his body already cold and aching, using what little strength he has left, Jahyeon reaches into his torn and bloody robe to pull out the single memento he has always kept with him- an ornate hairpin with a beautiful pink flower charm as it's centerpiece. Even after all this time, he had never let this small trinket leave his side. Because to him, it was all he had left of her.
'Soru...I wonder where you are right now. Are you safe? Are you finally happy? There are so many things I wish I could've told you.' Jahyeon thinks to himself, his eyes tearing up as he gazes at the hairpin now in his bloody hands.
'I wish I could've seen you again, even for just a moment. I wish I could have apologized to you, and make up for everything that I'd done. And as selfish as it is, I wish you would have been with me in my final days.' Jahyeon sadly thinks, bringing the hairpin close to his chest.
'...I miss you. Pushing you away will always be my biggest regret. And for better or worse, I doubt I'll be able to see you where I'm going. A bastard like me, I'm surely going to hell.' Jahyeon mentally settles on, his vision finally becoming blurry just as his breathing also becomes more labored.
'Soru...please live a long and happy life. And...if I could be so greedy...If there is a next life, even if you still don't choose me, I hope you'd let me stand by your side.' Jahyeon silently admits his final prayers.
Now, unable to feel a great deal of his body, Jahyeon slowly lets his eyelids close for what he's sure will be the last time. While Jahyeon is certain his prayers will go unheard and unanswered, since he was never one to believe in such things, he is still satisfied with his final thoughts. Because those were his true feelings, and he'd never regret thinking of the woman he loves in his final moments. Though he must admit, even he is unsure what is to come after his passing.

'...What...what is this?' Jahyeon thinks.
After what could have only been a few seconds of darkness and utter silence, Jahyeon is surprised when he suddenly begins to hear things again. He is shocked as he was sure he was about to meet his end moments ago, but also because the sounds he's met with are not the noises he would've expected to hear once again. After all, he was just on the battlefield, surrounded by screaming and the sounds of weapons.
But now, Jahyeon hears what could only be described as the noise he'd hear back in city, the distant sounds of voices and ongoing businesses. Simply to see if what he was hearing was true, Jahyeon finally attempts to open his eyes. And to his astonishment, not only was he able to do so, but he finds himself standing somewhere that wasn't the battlefield anymore.
Through circumstances he can't even begin to understand, Jahyeon finds himself not just back in the city, but actually back in front of the palace, surrounded by guards and a handful of female servants for what he could only assume was because of some kind of ceremony.
"How...is this possible?" Jahyeon mutters to himself, actually surprising himself that he was able to do so.
While it takes him a moment, Jahyeon quickly looks down at himself, once again left shocked and perplexed. All of the injuries that he was just covered in aren't just healed, they're completely gone. Almost as if they never happened at all. And he's not even in the same clothes anymore. Jahyeon finds himself in formal red and gold robes, robes that he actually seems to recognize.
"Impossible...Is this my life flashing before my eyes or-" Jahyeon speaks to himself, still trying to make sense of his current situation.
"It's Princess Soru!" A guardsman announces to everyone in the courtyard.
Hearing this, Jahyeon couldn't help but practically freeze. Letting his gaze fall on the gates as they were slowly opened, Jahyeon was finally able to see the face of the woman he hadn't seen in years, the face of the woman he loves. Just like that day so many years ago, even without her sight, Soru's eyes quickly meet his.
Almost as if possessed or simply on impulse, Jahyeon rushes towards her, ignoring the words or reactions of everyone around him. When he finally reached her, Jahyeon immediately wrapped his arms around Soru, the constant and crushing weight once in his chest for so many years finally gone.
"U-um, e-excuse me?" Soru nervously says, very confused and surprised as to why she was suddenly being hugged, even if it was by her husband-to-be.
Jahyeon didn't say anything. Even as he was hugging her, a part of Jahyeon was still scared that this was all just a dream, one he'd wake up from at any moment. All he could do was simply hold her tighter, burying his face into the crook of her neck.
"I'm sorry...I'm so sorry..." Jahyeon quietly repeats, still clinging to her, unknowingly on the brink of tears.
"Haha! Would you look at that. Jahyeon's such a dog, he'll cling to any woman he sees." an unfortunately familiar mocking voice rings out.
Practically bringing Jahyeon back to his senses in an instant, he finally lets go of Soru, standing up straight to turn towards the source of the voice. Just as he expected, Jahyeon is met with the aggravating sight of the old king, Garyun. Now if it was just Soru, Jahyeon would have gladly written this all off as some end of life hallucination. But if he was really seeing that bastard king Garyun again, Jahyeon might actually have to come to terms with his current situation, no matter how unnatural it seems.
Jahyeon is actually back in the past, back on the day where he first met Soru. He's still unsure how this even happened, or if he's really just imagining all this. But at least for now, until he can figure this all, Jahyeon wasn't going to let this chance slip away again. He would definitely protect Soru this time, and do whatever he could to make her happy.
Chapter Text
This all feels like a dream. Here Jahyeon was, going through the same marriage ceremony he did so long with the same woman, the woman he loves and hadn't seen in years. And of course, it went just as he remembered it- it was quick, elegant, even King Garyun's cruel words towards Soru were on point. Even after so long, he remembered every detail of this day like it was yesterday. Which is why he had to be prepared for what happens next.
Because now, near the end of the ceremony, Jahyeon and Soru would walk right into an ambush. Just like the rest of the ceremony, he remembered the attack perfectly. He remembered when they'd strike, how many he killed, and he specifically recalled how he saved Soru that day. Back then, it was simply on instinct. But now, he saw it as the first good thing he ever did for her. Even if he can't say he did a great deal of kind things for her.
Regardless, now Jahyeon must decide what to do here. A part of him is contemplating not even allowing the parade to proceed as it did back then. Maybe if he did, Jahyeon could take Soru somewhere far away from here, before the events of the past could play out as they did before. Or rather, the events of the present. However, doing that could cause problems as well.
If Jahyeon were to change things, he'd be unable to predict what would happen next. For example, if he took Soru right now somewhere away from the path the parade is meant to take, he wouldn't know whether or not the enemies would find them or not. And he also couldn't guarantee he could fight off all of them by himself should he be caught alone with her.
'The attack will happen any time now. I know this, but still...' Jahyeon thinks, mounting the horse meant to lead the impending parade.
He hated it, this feeling of helplessness. Jahyeon wanted to do things right this time, but to do that, he'd have to veer off the path he knows will happen. And by doing that, he'd expose not just himself, but Soru to new threats as well. He knew this, but deep down, Jahyeon already knew what path he'd take. As long as it meant Soru would be happy this time, he didn't care what risks he'd have to take.
"Open the gates!" a guard calls out.
With that call, the palace gates open as they were meant to. The first time this happened, when Jahyeon saw all the judgmental eyes of the town folk, he lost his composure, feeling as if he was being pitied and looked down upon. But this time, he couldn't care less about them. Because with the gates now open, Jahyeon knew what was coming.
"R...Rebels!" Someone cries out.
And just like that, the surprise attack began. People were quick to panic and run as many masked assailants stormed into the courtyard. Just like before, they were quick to target the palanquin Soru was meant to be carried in. And unfortunately, Soru slowly comes out upon hearing so much noise, just as she did in the past. But unlike before, Jahyeon was quick to react.
Not just on instinct this time. Now, when Jahyeon cuts down the first of many enemies, he didn't let them lay a finger on her. The masked man was dead before Soru could even register she was about to be grabbed. Now, when Jahyeon looks down at Soru, her face once again stained with blood, just like it was that day, he didn't have an ounce of the contempt or pity he felt all those years ago.
Now, while Jahyeon was grateful he was able to save the woman he loved, he also felt disgusted by the grateful and amazed gaze she was looking at him with. Even if he was given this miraculous second chance, that unfortunately didn't mean the past was forgotten. Not by Jahyeon at least. He was still plagued by all the cruel and hateful things he said and did to her, Soru's tear stained face haunting him even now.
The fact that she was now looking at him like he was some shining beacon simply left him racked with guilt. Jahyeon wanted to be a man worthy of her love, to feel like he deserves to be looked at by her in that way. But as of right now, he was no where close to his goal. But, after this moment, where everything went downhill in his opinion, he would do things right.
Instead of just running off to continue fighting like he did in the past, Jahyeon kneels down and carefully wipes the blood from her face, actually leaving his hand gently against her cheek, making her look at him, despite her blindness.
"Soru, no matter what happens, you must wait here for me. Understand? Don't move no matter what." Jahyeon says to her.
He felt he had to say this for various reasons. Firstly, he felt worried that, even with the small change of events, more of the assailants would come after her, even if they hadn't in the past. Secondly, even if it was more or less a minor inconvenience, Jahyeon recalled how someone had stepped on Soru's hands back then. While insignificant, he hated seeing that happen to her.
"O...ok." Soru quietly replies, both confused and enraptured at the moment.
With that out of the way, Jahyeon rejoins the fray, cutting down man after man, relishing the energy and strength he has again now that he's regained his youth. In addition to this, he doesn't need to stop or slow down to question them this time. He is already well aware of who sent these men, and why they were attacking. Of course, there was one thing he still had to do.
"What are you doing!? Don't tell me you're scared of a little scuffle like this. Draw your swords at once!" Jahyeon yells at some idle soldiers.
No matter how much time had passed, Jahyeon was well aware how spineless most soldiers were back then. He was somewhat grateful he remained a general till his last breath, his leadership skills still being as sharp as ever.
'I don't have to keep this up for long.' Jahyeon thinks. 'If I remember right, these people will retreat the moment we hear-'
"Jahyeon! The building caught fire!" the familiar voice of Jahyeon's closest friend, Biryung, calls out.
Just like Jahyeon expected, the royal palace soon caught fire in the midst of all the fighting. And the moment Jahyeon takes his eyes of his opponents, they take off running. In the past, Jahyeon would've attempted to chase after them. But this time, he kept his priorities straight.
"Let them go! We can catch any stragglers later, start bringing water to put out the fire!" Jahyeon exclaims, ordering all the available soldiers.
"Yes sir!" Responded the soldiers.
"Look at you, I was sure you'd try and chase after them." Biryung comments. "You really live up to your reputation as a war hero. Even the soldiers rely on you more than their commanding offic- Hey, where are you going!?"
Jahyeon was not in the mood to listen to Biryung's sarcastic remarks right now. He takes off before his friend could even finish speaking. With the 'rebels' gone and the fire being handled, Jahyeon knew what his top priority was. He had to be sure Soru was ok. The pounding in his chest wouldn't quiet down otherwise.
As fast as he could without running, Jahyeon rushed to where he left Soru. He was already relieved he hadn't spot her just in the middle of the courtyard like she was in the past, but his panic still wasn't over yet. After an agonizingly long time, which in reality was probably barely a minute, he found Soru right where he left her, actually making her jump by his sudden presence.
"Good. You're still here. Are you hurt? Did anyone touch you?" Jahyeon asked in practically one breath, quickly kneeling down to check on her.
"N...no. I'm...just fine. Thank you." Soru tentatively responded, clearly nervous and unsure how to act around him, even with how concerned he seems to be.
Finally able to let out a sigh of relief, Jahyeon simply grabs Soru's shoulders to hold her in place as he rests his forehead on her shoulder, letting all the stress and adrenaline leave his body with every breath.
"Um, J-Jahyeon? Is...is something wrong? If...if you're hurt, I could-" Soru says, attempting to offer her help, the same help that unknowingly caused her so much trouble in her past life.
"No!" Jahyeon quickly replies, instinctively gripping her shoulders tighter as he looks up at her, panic and fear etched on his face, which she luckily couldn't see, as her shocked and fearful reaction to his loud exclamation was bad enough without seeing his face.
Taking a deep breath, Jahyeon rests his head back on her shoulder. "No, no, just...just let me rest here. At least for a little while...Please." He actually whispers, his hands even trembling.
Holding her like this still frightened Jahyeon. Not just because a part of him was still scared Soru and everything around him was just a dream that'd end at any moment, but also because, while Jahyeon wanted to hold and protect her more than anything, he was terrified.
Terrified he'd hurt her, break her, and push her away just as he did before. Even just holding her like this scared him to death. However, even with all that fear weighing him down, there was one thing that scared Jahyeon far more than anything else- The thought of letting her go. The thought of letting Soru slip away from him for even a second.
Doing that was far more terrifying than anything else. Just the thought of it felt a dagger to his chest. He might be selfish for this, he might even be crazy for trying to rewrite fate. But if he could be with her, if Jahyeon could finally give Soru her happy ending, he would move heaven and earth to do so. He would fight whoever he needed to...even Yato.
But for now, he just wanted to rest. And relish his wife's sweet scent again.
Chapter Text
"Jahyeon, come on!" Biryung complains. "Are you really just going to sit here and do nothing?"
After what felt like an eternity, Jahyeon was actually back at his old residence, the same one he more or less abandoned after becoming king. It was a strange thing to experience, everything feeling so foreign but familiar all at the same time. But it did take some time to get here. Following yesterday's attack, there was a great deal of work that had to be done.
Many people were injured, and repairs had to be made to the palace after the fire. However, with all those issues out of the way and a new day finally upon him, Jahyeon is slowly getting back to into his old sense of normalcy, now sitting on the floor of his old office with Biryung sitting by his side at a window, just as he did all those years ago.
"I am doing my work, aren't I? That should be enough." Jahyeon frankly replies.
In this timeline, Jahyeon hadn't allowed Soru to heal any of his injuries with her blood, so neither Biryung or anyone else knows about about her gift, and that's how he intends to keep it. While keeping Soru safe is a given for him, a major goal Jahyeon has in this new life is to make sure no one finds out about Soru's healing abilities.
True, her blood did allow Jahyeon to make many allies, but it also caused Soru to become a target of his own servants since they wanted her blood and flesh to sell or use for themselves. And given Soru's personality, if it were to happen again here, Jahyeon definitely wouldn't hear about it till it was too late again.
"Honestly, this isn't like you at all. Just the other day, all you wanted was to get revenge on the king. Now you're just happy doing paperwork?" Biryung questions.
While Jahyeon understand Biryung's confusion, he simply can't give him any good explanation right now. Or rather, he chooses not to. Trying to reasonably say he's technically from the future would be one thing. But Jahyeon can't help but recall how eager Biryung was to use the 'Ghost Princess' for her abilities in order to gain allies. However, he knows better than to blame Biryung for what really happened.
Jahyeon was ultimately the one made the decision to use Soru's gifts selfishly. And while Jahyeon knows he can trust Biryung, both now and in his past life, and is certain he meant Soru no harm, he simply can't risk letting his friend know Soru's secret, not yet at least. If the time comes, Jahyeon may change his mind one day. But for now, the secret is his alone.
"I have plenty of new supporters already," Jahyeon points out "I have no reason to be in any rush."
"What!?" Biryung moves closer to where Jahyeon sits. "Do you seriously plan to do nothing? You made enemies with the king, we've got to plan ahead!"
Jahyeon can't help but sigh and rub the side of his head. He'd almost forgotten how insistent Biryung could be when it came to Jahyeon ascending to the throne.
"Let me guess," Jahyeon begins. "I shouldn't just be happy with the line of guest at my door and need to maintain my new authority."
He responds this way simply because Jahyeon recalls this exact conversation from his past. For better or worse, this was the day Jahyeon made one of the worst decisions he could've ever made.
"Exactly! And I'm pretty sure King Garyun is thinking the same thing. All may seem fine and dandy now, but it won't last long." Biryung replies.
Jahyeon looks down in frustration. He knows a big part of his success in his past life was due to the connections and allies he made before. But he was only able to make those connections because he had something no one could refuse, a magical cure-all that healed all injuries and sicknesses; Soru's blood. As Jahyeon refuses to use her in any way this time around, he must think of something else.
"But of course..." Biryung begins. "It's not too late to bow and beg his majesty-"
"Biryung, unless you have anything useful to tell me, then go. I have work to do." Jahyeon interrupts, not letting Biryung finish.
"Wow, look at you, acting all cool and collected. Normally, you would've flipped out at the mere mention of the king." Biryung comments.
It was true. From what he can recall, if Biryung so much as mentioned or even joked about King Garyun, Jahyeon would've lashed out in one way or another. But that was back when all he cared about was revenge and becoming king. Now, that's no longer the case.
True, a part of him still wishes for Garyun's death, but it's not because he still aims for the throne. It's because it's the best path forward. Not only because his cruelty and greed affects the entire nation, but because his death will also allow Soru and Jahyeon to live in peace.
"Regardless, I have just what you need." Biryung says with a grin, pulling out a scroll to roll out on Jahyeon's desk.
"This is a list of influential local figures, merchants, and distinguished figures. These are the people you need to get on your side." Biryung explains.
As Jahyeon scans this list, he notices a few differences when comparing this list to the one he remembers vaguely. While that first list was purposefully made with the names of those who could benefit from Soru's blood, this one seemed to be based more on influence and reputations. However, he does still see names both the past and current list share.
"Unfortunately, winning them over will prove difficult," Biryung admits. "I can't imagine they'd risk losing favor with the king just to side with us."
"I'm not concerned about them right now. I have a different goal in mind anyway." Jahyeon replies, quickly earning a surprised reaction from Biryung.
"What!? A different goal!? Jahyeon, what has happened to you these past few days?!" Biryung exclaims. "First your sudden attraction the Ghost Princess, and now this?!"
As embarrassing as it is to admit, his friend was right. In stark contrast to their past lives together, Jahyeon has clearly made Soru's comfort and safety his top priority. Even after personally brining Soru to his home, Jahyeon immediately moved her into the room closest to his, now able to keep her close but also not pressure her to share a bed with him just yet. He's even visited Soru everyday without fail, sometimes even visiting to her twice in one day, just to make sure she's adjusting well to her new home.
And as extreme as it may sound, a part of him as even considered hiring a bodyguard for her. He could use the recent attack as an excuse, but for one thing, he doubts Soru would be comfortable around yet another stranger being around so much, and secondly, as petty as it may sound, Jahyeon doesn't like the idea of another man hanging around her all the time. Jahyeon knows to keep that petty side of his hidden for now though.
After all, he has to keep in mind that while he does indeed love Soru, Jahyeon is just a stranger to her right now. It wouldn't make sense for him act the way he wishes just yet. He has to win her heart and trust gradually, otherwise he risks losing her again.
"She's my wife," Jahyeon replies. "should I not try and make her feel comfortable in her own home?"
"Jahyeon, would you listen to yourself? This is the same woman you didn't even want to marry, even saying that this marriage was nothing more than an insult." Biryung argues.
Jahyeon slams his hand on the desk. "That's enough! This is my decision to make. If you don't like it, then you're welcome to to leave!" Jahyeon snaps, an easy silence filling the air.
"Well, at least your temper is still the same as ever." Biryung sighs. "Fine, I won't question what your plans are with the princess. But at least tell me you're not so far gone that you've forgiven King Garyun in any way?"
"Don't be ridiculous, of course not. Killing him goes without question. But as of right now, that isn't our only concern anymore. In fact, I have a favor I need you to do." Jahyeon says.
"Really? You're actually asking me for help? Wow, it must be important then." BIryung sarcastically remarks.
"I need you to find two people who should be in the city." Jahyeon requests. "One is a young man with ash blonde hair and a woman with silver hair and dark skin. They're known to be exorcists."
Chapter Text
While Jahyeon was inside speaking with Biryung, Soru is currently sitting outside on the edge of the walkway of Jahyeon's estate, taking in the gentle breeze, the chirping of the birds, all while sporting a calm and satisfied smile on her face.
"My lady!" the voice of a young woman calls out, catching Soru's attention.
"M-my name is Yumi." the servant girl introduces herself, a nervous stutter evident in her voice. "I-I've come to freshen you up."
Soru can't see the girl, but she hears the gentle noise of a pan full of water being set down beside her before she feels her hand gently being lifted.
"I will wipe your hands first." Yumi timidly informs her.
Soru smiles once again. "Ah, thank you." She gently thanks the girl.
Neither of them speak to each other while Yumi begins to clean Soru's hands. The only noise breaking the silence are the still chirping birds all around them.
"You...really are amazing my lady." Yumi suddenly mutters, her voice sounding a bit hesitant.
Soru looks at the girl with a puzzled and surprised expression. "I am?"
"I have never seen him shower someone in so much attention." Yumi admits. "He's always usually been busy, and yet comes to see you everyday."
Soru smiles at her, slightly shaking her head. "I'm nothing that special. He's just a great man who's kind enough to take pity on me."
"That can't be!" Yumi argues. "Anyone can see how much he cares for you."
"He's indeed a good man, but I know better than to expect such things. Just being here and with him is more than I deserve." Soru calmly explains, still sporting a content smile.
Yumi gazes at Soru with a look of sympathy and admiration, much different compared to the somewhat scared and sheepish expression she wore when she first approached Soru. The rumors she had initially heard about the 'Ghost Princess' unfortunately gave Yumi a somewhat negative idea of Soru. But now, Yumi can see she was sorely mistaken.
"W-well, please, if you need anything, just let me know!" Yumi says wholeheartedly. "I will help anyway I-"
"Soru." the familiar voice of Jahyeon calls out, interrupting and causing Yumi to jump and making Soru look his way.
Soru's face lights up upon hearing his voice. "Jahyeon!" She pipes up, attempting to quickly rise to her feet.
"It's fine." Jahyeon interjects, stopping her. "You don't have to stand just to greet me."
Soru listens to him, returning to her seated position. Jahyeon then looks over to Yumi, taking note how this was indeed the same servant girl who was Soru's closest aide in their past lives. He's admittedly glad to see her, remembering how fond she was of Soru.
"Thank you for attending to my wife." Jahyeon says, nodding his head at Yumi. "I hope you'll continue your hard work and stay by her side."
Yumi's whole face flushes a deep red as she waves her hands frantically. "N-not at all my lord! It's my pleasure, really! A-anyway, I'll just give you and my lady some privacy for now!"
Picking up the small pan of water, Yumi scurries off, leaving the two alone. Once she is out of sight, Jahyeon then sits down beside Soru, leaving just enough space where there's only a mere few inches of space between the two. Even though they are now right next to each other, a somewhat awkward silence persists for a few seconds.
"I'm sorry I couldn't come see you sooner," apologizes Jahyeon. "More work has piled up than I realized."
"Oh, no, it's fine, really. I'm already more than happy that I'm even allowed to stay by your side." Soru assures him, unintentionally making Jahyeon's heart ache.
To his regret, Jahyeon never truly grasped the hardships Soru faced to make her have such a meek self-deprecating mindset. Despite all the tears Soru shed or all the praise and thanks she heaped upon him for simply taking her in back then, Jahyeon failed to truly get to know or understand her. Or rather, he rejected and pushed her away before he even tried to.
And as of right now, Jahyeon can't exactly ask about her past trauma either. It's true the words Soru said to him to when she begged Jahyeon to take her in, of how she could finally live in peace like a human without hurting anyone, still ring in his head whenever he remembers that day. However, Soru never had to say such things here. She never had to plead or beg Jahyeon to let her stay by his side.
In his mind, he already swore he'd never let her or make her beg like that ever again, especially not for something that should be as basic as being treated humanely. While Jahyeon does wish he had an opening to speak with Soru about everything she faced back in the palace, he doesn't regret what he did. If he wants to truly be Soru's husband in this life, he'll have to put in the work.
"You shouldn't speak of yourself like that. You are my wife and by all definitions a princess, you are deserving of some respect." insists Jahyeon, causing Soru to look at him as if he said something totally new to her.
Taking a bold risk, Jahyeon reaches over and gently takes Soru's hand. "From now on, this is your home too. You will always be safe and welcomed here. Whatever it is you desire, just simply ask for it."
Soru's cheeks quickly flush a bright shade of pink, accompanied by a bashful and surprised expression. Jahyeon actually smiles upon seeing this, finally able to properly take in this new expression. For a brief moment, Jahyeon tries to think back to any other time he ever saw her have such an expression. This quickly makes his smile fade, realizing it wasn't a pleasant memory.
The time Jahyeon is now recalling was the very first time he asked Soru to use her blood, when a man was kicked in the head by a horse. He remembers how happy Soru was for the sheer fact she was helpful, despite the fact she cut open her own hand to do so. The very same hand he's now holding. With that in mind, Jahyeon unconsciously squeezes her hand tighter, a sudden wave of guilt washing over him.
"Ah, J-Jahyeon." Soru timidly squeaks, lightly wincing at his tight grip.
Realizing what he's doing, Jahyeon quickly lets go of her hand. "I-I'm sorry! I'm sorry..." Jahyeon apologizes, his face contorting in worry and panic.
It seems the idea of hurting or causing Soru any sort of discomfort truly terrifies Jahyeon. Perhaps, even if he doesn't realize it, Jahyeon fears that Soru will use any bad experience with him as an excuse to leave him when the opportunity arises. An opportunity Jahyeon's unfortunately well aware will come soon in the near future.
"It...it's ok." assures Soru, looking at Jahyeon with some concern and confusion, not understanding his drastic reaction.
Jahyeon simply looks down at the ground with a grimace on his face, tightly clenching his fists in frustration at once again making a mistake when it came to Soru. And yet again, a tense silence fills the air for some time.
"Um...Jahyeon?" Soru finally speaks up, timidly reaching over to gently tug on a small piece of his sleeve. "I...know this is rather shameless of me to ask but...could I perhaps request some flower seeds?" she asks.
Jahyeon perks up, snapping his head back her direction. "Flower seeds?" he repeats.
"I...want to smell the scent of flowers. Though I'm not sure I deserve such a luxury." Soru asks, her face already downcast, as if she was sure Jahyeon would say no.
Hearing this request, Jahyeon remembered the fact that Soru loved flowers. A fact he regrettably only learned once she was gone. But, with this new opportunity in front him, Jahyeon plans to take full advantage. He gently takes the hand Soru was using to grab his sleeve, this time carefully holding her hand by her fingers.
"Soru, you can ask for all the flowers you want." Jahyeon responds. "You can ask for anything you want here. And I promise, I will give you all the luxury you deserve."
Soru looks up at him, staring at him with a mixture of surprise and admiration for several moments before she smiles. A genuine beaming smile.
"Thank you!" Soru says.
Seeing that smile, for just a brief moment, Jahyeon was thankful Soru was blind. Because if she wasn't, she would've seen this grown man looking away to hide the small blush now crossing his cheeks.

Notes:
(Sorry for such a late chapter update, been dealing with lots of work and holiday stuff. But I really wanted to get this chapter done before my birthday. Figured it'd be poetic to have the fifth chapter out before my birthday which is on the fifth.)
Chapter Text
Days go by in relative peace for Jahyeon and Soru. While there was an incident involving one of his servants and a horse, Jahyeon's 'miraculous' interference kept the man's injuries to a minimum.
However, even if things were fine in his household, that didn't stop the constant problems and issues that plagued the city, the rebel attack being a major one, even if no one knew their true intentions that day. Later in the day, as Jahyeon is back at work, a rather tired looking Biryung stumbles in.
"By the Gods, I don't think I've done more walking in my entire life." Biryung groans in exaggerated pain.
Jahyeon looks at him, paying little attention to his groaning. "You're back earlier than usual. I take it you found something related to what I asked for?" he asks.
"Among other things." Biryung says with a sigh. "I was minding my own business, scouring the city for these so called 'exorcists' you mentioned. And as if my poor aching feet weren't bad enough, there was a dead body found in the middle of town! Ugh, just the memory of it makes me sick."
'So it's finally starting' Jahyeon thinks.
Thanks to the knowledge he has of the past, Jahyeon knew the sudden string of deaths that plagued the city would begin again sometime soon. And it seems now they are officially in full swing. Which also means a certain someone would also be making his appearance. Someone Jahyeon would keep away from Soru at all cost.
Biryung runs his hand through his hair to compose himself. "But, as awful as it was, it did create a happy accident. Funnily enough, the two people you asked about were nearby when the body was discovered."
"I hope you did more than just find them." Jahyeon questions.
"Do I seem so incompetent to you?" Biryung replies with a huff. "Yes, I spoke with them directly. The man is called Ashita, and woman is Yeoran. Just as you said, they are exorcists who apparently hail from the south."
Jahyeon nods along. "Good. And what else?" he adds.
"Well, they seemed both eager and surprised when they heard you wanted to meet with them." explained Biryung. "They both already knew who you were, though that's really no surprise given your reputation. They're both waiting by the front gates."
Jahyeon stands up from behind his desk. "Well done. Bring them into the meeting room and have them wait for me. There is something I must check on first."
"Honestly Jahyeon, if you want to go see your wife so badly, just say so." Biryung says with a chuckle.
Ignoring Biryung's remark, Jahyeon walks out of his office. The taunting joke aside, he was indeed going to see Soru. While it was already a natural part of Jahyeon's routine, he's doing it for a different reason today. With the mysterious killings taking place once again, Jahyeon knows all the problems this will bring.
First of all, Jahyeon remembers how King Garyun actually took advantage of the killings and left corpses the demons weren't even responsible for practically at his doorstep just to ruin his image. But, that was more due to the sudden influence Jahyeon gained from using Soru's blood. Since he hasn't done that in this lifetime, he should be safe from that scenario this time around. At least if he plays his cards right.
Secondly, and the more pressing matter, Jahyeon remembers that the more corpses that pile up, it means the closer and closer Yato gets to his goal. And the closer the demon gets to his goal, the sooner he'll inevitably come for Soru. That's why Jahyeon is in such a hurry this time around. Last time, he merely begrudgingly cooperated with the exorcists just to stop the killings. This time, he has far more at stake. Far more.
Now, after a bit more walking, Jahyeon finally reaches Soru's room. "Soru? I'm coming in." he calls.
Waiting a few moments out of curtesy, Jahyeon soon slides the door open. Inside, he finds Soru sitting in a chair as Yumi brushes her long brown hair.
"Jahyeon! I thought you'd still be working." Soru greets him with her usual warm smile.
Jahyeon cracks a smile in return. "I'm taking a bit of a break. There's something I wish to discuss, but I can wait outside until you two are finished."
"No no no, that won't be necessary my lord! I'm all about done here anyway!" Yumi quickly interjects.
"Well, thank you Yumi. I really appreciate it." Soru thanks her.
Yumi lets out a sheepish laugh with warm smile. "Not at all milady. It's always a pleasure. Please, just call if you need anything." she replies before rushing out, leaving the two alone.
"Soru," Jahyeon walks towards her. "There's something I need to talk to you about."
Soru looks up at him curiously. "Oh, ok." she says a bit unsurely.
Gently taking her hand, Jahyeon helps Soru stand before guiding her the mere few steps back to her bed, making her sit down first before he sits down next to her, admittedly being rather slow in letting go of her hand.
"Soru...I don't know if you've heard, but there have been some recent murders happening throughout the city." Jahyeon begins.
Soru gasps, looking at him in shock. "What? Murders?"
Jahyeon doesn't exactly know for certain how much Soru was told about the murders in the past or how soon she learned about them. But regardless, he wants to be sure she is told of everything this time around, to make her feel involved and included, and to also make her aware of the dangerous situation outside the walls of their home.
"Yes." he continues. "And because of the implications these deaths could mean, I've invited some people over who could help put a stop to this."
"Is...is there anything I can help with?" Soru offers.
Jahyeon looks at her with a serious yet sincere expression. "No, you have to stay here where it's safe. I know I may sound paranoid, but I'm worried people will use your reputation as the 'Ghost Princess' to hurt you."
While he was mostly just saying this to keep the exorcists from meeting Soru just yet since he wanted to speak with them alone, Jahyeon was truly concerned. He couldn't help but think back to how Soru was tormented by the townsfolk for simply stepping outside with him to enjoy a festival. A festival where he stepped away for just a moment to buy his wife a hairpin. A hairpin he was never able to give her.
"But I..." Soru began, but she bit her lip and lowered her head. Seeing this, Jahyeon's expression softened and he gently took one of her hands in his.
"Soru, I know you think you need to repay me. But that's not the case. You don't owe me anything..." Jahyeon says. Now it's his turn to lower his head, squeezing Soru's hands tight, but careful not to hurt her.
"I'm not as great as you think I am. I've...I've done things. Things I'm not proud of. Things I want to make up for. But to do that, I need you by my side. So please, just for now, promise me you'll stay here. Please..." Jahyeon says, his voice nearly cracking.
Soru was left stunned. While she could never truly grasp the true meaning behind Jahyeon's words, she can at least recognize how scared he seems to be in this moment. The way he's squeezing her hands, the tremble in his voice. She could tell. Gingerly, Soru reaches out her free hand, her finger tips just barely touching Jahyeon's cheek when she feels him move, making her quickly pull her hand back.
"I-I'm sorry! You sounded upset, so I just..." Soru hastily explains, worried she had upset him. But to her surprise, Jahyeon actually reached out and took her hand, gently placing it against his cheek.
"No, it's fine. Please, don't be afraid to touch me." he assures her, closing his eyes to let her do so.
Soru is again left taken aback, her face flushing a light shade of pink. But slowly, she runs her hand over his face, finally taking in all the details of his face, her fingers gently gliding over his eyes and lips.
"...Interesting." Soru comments with a warm smile.
Jahyeon opens his eyes now that she is done. "What is?" he asks.
"I thought you'd have a scarier face." answers Soru.
While Soru can't see it, Jahyeon looks at her with a mix of longing and guilt. He remembers when Soru felt his face the first time in the past, when he offered her something in return for the cruel treatment she faced by his own servants. While he regrets not doing more for her, even if it was what she asked for, Jahyeon is grateful he was able to do this for her now, not out of obligation this time.
"You don't think I have a scary face?" Jahyeon asks.
Soru lightly giggles. "Well...you always seem to be frowning. Smiling more would change that."
Jahyeon chuckles in turn from hearing her laugh, his nerves finally easing. "I'll keep that in mind." he promises.
"Anyway, I suppose I should be going." Jahyeon stands up, still holding one of Soru's hands in his. "Do you promise to wait for me till I'm done? I promise to take you for a walk when I come back."
Soru nods and smiles. "Ok."
Smiling, Jahyeon lets her hand slip out of his as he begins to walk away. But, just before he reaches the door, Jahyeon actually turns on his heel to walk back. And, without a word, he leans down and kisses Soru on the forehead. He then wastes no time rushing out of her room, his face now red with blush. It's almost a shame he didn't stick around a few moments longer. Otherwise, he would have seen Soru blushing just as much, an embarrassed smile slowly crossing her face.

Chapter Text
After a short time of recomposing himself, Jahyeon finally reached the meeting room where Biryung, Ashita, and Yeoran were waiting for him. When he slides open the door, the two exorcists inside stand up upon seeing him, both offering a small bow.
The blonde man speaks first. "It's a pleasure to meet you General. My name is Ashita. And this is my companion, Yeoran." He gestures to the woman behind him.
Jahyeon nods in acknowledgement. "Thank you for coming." He responds. "Biryung, would give us some privacy?"
"What?! Why do I have to go? Do you not trust me all of sudden?" Biryung argues.
"I need someone to make sure no one will listen in on this." Jahyeon answers seriously. "I trust you more than anyone to do that."
While Jahyeon does naturally trust him, there are still certain things he feels Biryung just isn't ready to be told yet. Not until things are truly in motion. And not until Jahyeon is truly certain of Soru's safety.
Biryung wants to argue, but he just lets out a low grumble. "I really can't handle you when you're actually all calm like this."
He finally relents and leaves the room, leaving just the three of them alone. Jahyeon then moves across the room to sit down behind his desk, Ashita and Yeoran sitting back down across from him as well.
"I must say, it was quite an unexpected surprise that you actually reached out to us, let alone even know about us. Guess that's just expected from the great national hero." Ashita gushed with a flattering smile.
"You can save the flattery." Jahyeon interjects. "I brought you here to discuss the murders happening in the city."
Ashita shares a suspicious glance with Yeoran before looking back to Jahyeon. "Yes, of course. But, if I may ask, why did you seek us out in particular about this matter?"
"Because these murders are not being committed by just some regular human, isn't that correct?" Jahyeon responds straightforwardly, earning surprised reactions from the exorcists.
"You know?" Yeoran questions.
"Call it a reasonable guess." Jahyeon insists, leaning his elbows on his desk so as to clasp his hands together. "I've heard how the bodies were found, mangled and hearts missing. It didn't sound like a human, but was too precise to be an animal."
While that naturally wasn't the whole truth, it was the most reasonable explanation Jahyeon could come up with. And it wasn't as if it was a total lie anyway. Given his position and status, it was only natural such news would reach him one way or the other. He simply came up with an explanation that sounds like an assumption anyone could make.
"I suppose that's not unexpected from a seasoned warrior like yourself. You're right, it wasn't any human who did it. Rather, something more...demonic." Ashita answers.
Jahyeon's hands tighten together upon hearing the news. He already knew Yato's influence was inevitable, but a part of him never truly comprehended how quickly this would all happen. Although, to him, all of this did happen years ago, so that could play a part in all the frustration and trepidation he feels.
Jahyeon takes a deep breath and sighs. "A demon. I see."
"Then you believe us? Really? Frankly, most people would be more skeptical than this, especially men of your station." Yeoran admits, raising a brow.
"Yeoran, don't be rude!" Ashita stammers nervously.
"No, it's fine." Jahyeon assures them. "A long time ago, I'll admit, I would have been skeptical. But certain events have made me more...open to such things."
Jahyeon can't help but recall the last time he met with these two in his past life. Yeoran was just as abrasively honest as she was back then, but at least during this meeting she was less hostile towards him. However, Jahyeon can hardly hold that against her. Frankly, he was almost glad someone was so aggressive on Soru's behalf after what he did. It reassures him that she and Ashita will be of great help to him this time around.
"And actually, it's about such things that made me seek you two out for another reason in particular." he continues.
The two exorcists look at Jahyeon with a shared a look of shock and confusion. "What do you mean?" Yeoran asks.
"What if I say I believe my wife was being targeted by this and other demons for some reason, and that’s the main cause for why they're here? How would that sound?" Jahyeon admits.
To say Ashita and Yeoran were left speechless was an understatement, but Jahyeon doesn't waver. His expression shows he's completely serious, even without knowing the full reason behind their reaction.
Ashita clears his throat before speaking. "Sir Jahyeon, I know you're wife has the unfortunate title of the 'Ghost Princess', but-"
"That's not why." Jahyeon interrupts him, glancing to the door and the other walls, warily checking for anyone else's presence before he continues.
"It's her blood. No one else knows this, not even Biryung, but it has the power to heal people. That power of hers seems to attract certain things. Things that aim to hurt her and anyone around her." he adds.
Jahyeon is nervous about sharing the secret he swore he would keep under wraps in this lifetime, naturally fearing what should happen if word gets out, but he's positive telling these two will help him in the long run. They were one of the few people who openly acknowledged in front of him how wrong it was for Soru's flesh and blood to be taken from back then after all.
After hearing Jahyeon's response, Ashita and Yeoran share an astonished yet knowing look. Nodding to one another, Ashita looks back to Jahyeon with a solemn expression.
"Alright, if you're as open to demons and the supernatural as you say, then we may have an explanation for you if you're willing to believe us." Ashita explains.
Jahyeon nods his head. "I'll take any explanation at this point...I need to know how best to protect her."
Jahyeon never knew the full truth as to why the demons craved Soru's flesh so badly. He recalls how Soru was apparently viewed as a delicacy to them, but he never grasped why her of all people, beyond the fact of her healing blood. If he learns more about their reasonings now, maybe he can find a way to keep any demon, including Yato, away from her for good.
While a bit taken aback but his heartfelt response, Ashita continues speaking. "Getting straight to the point, Princess Soru isn't actually a normal human. She's a celestial being."
Jahyeon's eyes widen upon hearing the news. "...What?"
He thought he was prepared for any explanation they could give, but that wasn't one of them. Jahyeon was never told of Soru's true origins in his last lifetime, and he doesn't know if Soru was ever made aware either. However, as farfetched as it sounds, given that Jahyeon is literally back in the past, he's willing to accept what he was told as a fact.
"She was born into the wrong realm." Ashita continues. "Such things only happen once every thousand years or so."
"...And that's why the demons are after her? Because she's a celestial?" Jahyeon asks, his voice trembling with uncertainty and rage as his clenched fists lay on the desk.
Ashita nods. "I'm afraid so. Not only is she a delicacy that would make a demon stronger, if a celestial being is ever eaten, the demon in question would be able to reincarnate as a human."
"But more commonly, a demon can attempt to eat 1,000 human hearts instead. Or more disturbingly, 100 exorcists." Yeoran adds.
Jahyeon's fists begin trembling. He can now make connections from what the two are saying to what he remembers. If Yato is following the same path he did in Jahyeon's past life, then he can assume that the demon is attempting to become human. And whether he makes this conclusion from sheer facts or simply because of his own ego, Jahyeon is certain Yato is aiming to be human for Soru, so he can come and take her away.
"...How can we keep these demons away from her?" Jahyeon asks.
"You're actually doing that all on your own." Ashita answers. "Believe it or not, you were born with a supernatural power. Meaning most demons die merely by being in your presence."
Jahyeon vaguely recalls being told this information in his past as well. Though that unfortunately also brings back the memories of Soru begging for Jahyeon's help and acceptance in his former life. He shakes his head to clear the bitter memories.
"That's not good enough. I want Soru to be free from demons for the rest of her days, even if I'm not around." Jahyeon says adamantly.
While determined to remain by her side, Jahyeon isn't a fool. He knows he can't stay with Soru 24/7, and God forbid what should happen if he dies before her this time around. He knows he can be a selfish man, but Jahyeon will always put Soru's safety and happiness first and foremost.
Ashita and Yeoran both seem to blink in surprise. "You must truly love your wife Sir Jahyeon." Yeoran comments.
"...More than you know." Jahyeon quietly admits.
"Well, if you're willing to cooperate with us Sir Jahyeon, I think we can save not just the city, but the princess as well." Ashita says.
Chapter Text
Biryung rushes alongside Jahyeon as he strides through his estate. "Jahyeon, come on, why can't I know what you talked about with them?" he whines.
"I told you everything that matters. The exorcists will help us deal with the murders happening throughout the city." Jahyeon responds in a huff, seeming rather annoyed.
"You've barely told me anything! And there has to be more to it if you left that meeting in such a bad mood." Biryung argues.
By all definition, Biryung was right. Jahyeon did in fact leave that meeting with Ashita and Yeoran in a sour mood. Though considering what was discussed, no one could hardly blame him for that.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
"Now, I hate to even suggest this, but if what you're saying is true, we'd like to borrow-"
"Out of the question." Jahyeon cuts him off.
"B-but I didn't say what we're asking for yet." Ashita sputters, flustered at the automatic rejection.
"You were going to ask to use Soru's power, correct? Or rather, you want to use her directly as bait." Jahyeon explains.
Jahyeon had a feeling this request would come up during their discussion, but he was hoping they could avoid it this time around, even if that was just hopeful thinking on his part. It was the same request they made to him in Jahyeon's previous life, a request he sorely regrets agreeing to.
"I know it sounds harsh sir, but this might be our only chance." Ashita explains. "If Lady Soru really is this demon's target, we can lure it out and catch it when it's vulnerable."
"The answer is still no." Jahyeon reaffirms.
Yeoran folds her arms with an approving head nod. "While it's refreshing to see a man so worried about his wife, you can rest easy. We'd bring along fifty of our finest colleagues, and our sorcery is considered top class in the south."
"Neither of you understand!" Jahyeon shouts, unintentionally slamming his fist on the table.
He takes a deep breath and sighs before continuing. "Soru is the kind of person who wouldn't hesitate in going along with a plan like this. If she thought it could help someone, she would do it, no questions asked...No matter how much pain it would cause her."
"She's been through enough...Now that she's my wife, I promised her a life free from any more pain and suffering. And I refuse to put her in any sort of danger."
While he won't admit it, and honestly can't given his situation, Jahyeon is so adamantly refusing their request not because of Soru's safety, but because he fears what should happen if Soru and Yato come face to face. Because of what he deems as his own weakness back then, Soru was ready to offer herself to Yato just for Jahyeon's sake.
And while it wasn't then he truly lost her, it lead to Jahyeon saying the words that truly sealed his fate. The last hateful, untrue, and regrettable words he ever said to Soru in his past lifetime. Now, out of both fear and anxiety, Jahyeon doesn't want anything to risk Yato having the chance to take her away again. No matter how much of a madman he may seem.
Ashita lets out a heavy sigh, hand resting on his forehead. "I can see you're not willing to budge are about this. So I suppose we can save that as a last resort for now at least."
"Excuse me, but that still leaves us with a demon running amok and no leads on how to catch or stop it." Yeoran argues.
"Not completely." Jahyeon admits, making two exorcists look back at him oddly. "I can't explain how I know this, and I don't want either of you questioning how I do, understand?"
Ashita and Yeoran share a questionable glance, but they both eventually nod. "Very well. Please, tell us." Ashita relents.
Jahyeon nods before speaking. "The demon in question is disguised as a human, but I'm sure that goes without saying. He appears as a tall man with striking features, seemingly in his twenties or thirties with pale skin and long black hair, his eyes a distinct shade of yellow."
Jahyeon explains Yato's appearance as best as he can remember, which proves to be somewhat difficult outside of his general features. For Jahyeon, it has been well over a decade since he was last face to face with the demon after all. That last instance happening to be when Yato himself actually saved Jahyeon from Garyun, much to his chagrin.
And while Jahyeon knows it's risky passing on such information when it comes from the memories he has thanks to his 'unique situation', if it can help deal with the murders in the city and protect Soru all at the same time, it's a risk he's willing to take.
Ashita raises his hand to his chin. "Pale skin and long black hair. That should hopefully give us something to work with."
"While we'll keep our word and not question how you know this, there's still the problem of actually finding such a person." Yeoran points out, glancing at Jahyeon skeptically.
"That is true. The city is very vast, and the demon has been good at hiding his tracks. We'll need a way to narrow our search...which brings up my next request Sir Jahyeon." Ashita responds.
"It better not have to do with Soru again." Jahyeon immediately warns.
"Uh, well, I'm afraid it does actually." Ashita admits, scratching his cheek nervously. "I won't ask again for Lady Soru to participate in anything dangerous, but...there is something we must have from her."
Jahyeon clenches his fist, feeling he already knows what Ashita is about to request. "What is it?"
"If what you're saying is true, and I know how awful this may sound...we must ask for some of Lady Soru's blood, Sir Jahyeon." Ashita requests.
Jahyeon shoots to his feet an instant. "Forget it! Out of the question!" he staunchly refuses.
A part of Jahyeon had a feeling such a request would come up when he shared this secret with them, especially when he shot down their initial plan of using Soru herself as bait. And while it came sooner than he would've liked, Jahyeon's response will remain the same regardless.
"Please, if left to it's own devices, this demon could go on to kill dozens, hundreds even! If we can't find a proper way to lure it out, this demon will keep hunting humans in the capital!" Ashita argues.
Jahyeon steps towards the door, ready to leave. "I refuse to risk Soru's life for any sort of inane plan. You are free to return tomorrow to talk about this further, but as of now, this conversation is over-"
"And what of Lady Soru?" Yeoran interjects, stopping Jahyeon in his tracks.
"From everything you've said, she's supposably this saint who'd give someone hurt the clothes off her back. Would such a person be content knowing a murderer was running amok when she could do something to help?" she questions.
"Y-Yeoran! Please, be more polite!" Ashita stammers.
The vein on Jahyeon's forehead pounded as he clenched his fists. He could feel himself wanting to lose his temper. But he knew Yeoran was right. Soru wasn't the kind of person who'd want to sit idly by in a situation like this if she was given the option. That, and he knows how much Soru wishes to help others. Himself most of all, no matter how undeserving as he feels to receive it.
"...I will discuss this with Soru then. But I make no promises. Until then, we're done for today. Come back tomorrow to discuss this further." Jahyeon laments, walking out of the room and leaving the two there.
"Honestly, what a strange man. I mean, it's a relief he actually reached out to us, but I never expected a man like him to be so open or forward about all this." Yeoran admits with a sigh.
"But Yeoran, you sensed it too didn't you?" Ashita says rather ominously, make Yeoran look at him quizzically.
"What do you mean?" she asks.
"His energy, the special power he was definitely born with. It feels...off somehow." Ashita admits.
Yeoran's eyes widen. "Off? What do you mean off? You don't mean he's corrupted somehow do you?"
"No, nothing like that." Ashita assures her, shaking his head. "It's hard to explain. It just...doesn't feel completely natural. Almost like...it's an older power in young body."
"What? A person's energy being older than the body? Is such a thing even possible?" Yeoran asks with an expression of disbelief.
Ashita folds his arms as he narrows his eyes in thought. "I don't know. But given everything Sir Jahyeon seems to know about this, I think he warrants investigating too."
Chapter Text
With his meeting with the exorcists finally over with, Jahyeon returned to Soru for the walked he promised her. However, he wishes he could be in a better mood such an occasion. He knows holding off talking with her about the murders and her possible involvement will do more harm than good, but he just can't bring himself to say anything.
Or rather, he clearly doesn't want to. It's calm peaceful moments like this right now, walking hand in hand with Soru through his estate, that Jahyeon wants to cling to more than anything. Moments he didn't spend with or offer Soru in his past life which he regrettably still seems to torment himself over.
"Soru, I actually have a surprise for you." Jahyeon says, getting Soru's attention as they cross the bridge over the waterway.
"What? For me?" Soru pipes surprisedly, her face lighting up.
Jahyeon smiles at her reaction. "I asked the servants to plant more flowers for you in the garden. I'm sorry you won't be able to see them, but I hope you can still enjoy them."
Just as he promised, Jahyeon leads Soru to one of two widespread flowerbeds just off both sides beyond the bridge. It's honestly a testament to how far he's come in this lifetime. Taking Soru's blindness into account, Jahyeon specifically requested flowers that are not only beautiful, but also extra fragrant and without any thorns.
Jahyeon stops with her just at end of the flowerbed. "Go ahead. See if you like them." he encourages her.
"O-oh, ok." Soru shyly squeaks.
With Jahyeon almost begrudgingly lets go of her hand, Soru slowly crouches down, reaching a careful hand out until her fingertips graze one of the many flowers. After a moment of surprise, Soru delicately plucks the flower she first felt, lifting it to her face she as she takes in several long sniffs.
A warm content smile crosses her face. "They smell so lovely." Soru compliments blissfully.
Jahyeon smiles himself as he watches her, grateful he's managed to make Soru happy, even for just a moment. But once again, almost like a habit that's out of hand, the memories of his troublesome past rear their ugly head. In this instance, the memory of the first time he saw Soru by this flower bed.
It was unfortunately right after the god awful incident where Soru was cut up by his own servants. And while she recovered relatively well, Jahyeon didn't like finding her all by herself. And like the bastard he was, her scolded and shouted at her rather than being kind.
He shakes his head to clear all those bad thoughts. While he's unfortunately well accustomed to beat himself up over his past mistakes, Jahyeon is determined to focus on the present for Soru's sake. And unfortunately, that includes dealing with these murders sooner rather than later. so taking a deep breath, Jahyeon doesn't wait any longer.
"Soru...there's something I need to discuss with you." Jahyeon begrudgingly admits.
Soru somewhat jumps at suddenly hearing his voice, but looks up in his direction all the same. "About what?" she innocently asks.
Kneeling down, Jahyeon delicately takes the hand Soru isn't holding a flower in. "As you know, I spoke with some people regarding the murders."
"And from what they've seen, all those deaths weren't exactly...normal. They believe something demonic is behind them, and they want me to help stop them." he explained
Soru's blinks in surprise. "Demonic?" she says quietly.
"Yes...And they think you could part of what's attracting them." Jahyeon cautiously admits.
Soru's eyes then immediately widen upon hearing that, fear flashing across her face. Jahyeon could feel her hands begin to tremble, making him reflexively squeeze her hand protectively.
"Soru, just know that none of what's going on out there is your fault, understand?" Jahyeon assures her. "You never asked to be tormented and targeted like this after all."
Not just her hands, but now Soru's whole body shook and trembled. It was just a matter of seconds before tears can be seen in the corner of her eyes.
"Soru..." He speaks gently.
She's quick to try and wipe away the tears before they can fall with her free hand. "I'm sorry. It's nothing, honestly. I promise I'm fine." Soru tries and fails to say reassuringly.
Before she realizes it, Soru feels Jahyeon pull her into a tight embrace. Her face is gently pressed against his broad chest, letting her feel his warmth through her cheek. And all the while, Jahyeon's strong hands hold her tightly."
"I'm sorry Soru. I hate making you shed tears over anything...But I want you to know that I see you as my equal, as the wife I care for. So I want to be sure I never leave you in the dark anymore than I'm forced to." Jahyeon laments.
Soru can feel her cheeks flushing, despite the budding tears. "Jahyeon..." she whispers.
He raises a hand protectively over her head, holding her closer. "And I want you to feel you can tell me anything. No matter the burden or terror you feel from it...I wish for you to trust me."
By the time Jahyeon finishes speaking, Soru is trembling all over, hiccups and sniffling breaking the silence until she can't hold it anymore. Gripping his top in her small fragile hands, Soru sheds tears of long held in sadness, fear, and frustration, weeping uncontrollably into his chest.
"So...so many people...All because of me...." she attempts to speak in between sobs.
Jahyeon strokes Soru's head comfortingly, allowing her cry to her hearts content. "It's okay Soru. It's alright now. Let it all out...We can talk all we want once you're done." he says soothingly.
Ever since receiving this miraculous second chance, Jahyeon has long been waiting for Soru to open up to him like this. While it breaks his heart to see her in such a state, Jahyeon knows this is finally the step forward he and Soru need to better solidify their future together. He wants to know every hardship and terror she faced before the two met.
The reasons behind her callous nickname of the 'Ghost Princess'. Because Jahyeon strongly believes that once her hears them from her, not only does that prove Soru truly trusts him, but he can properly make sure she never faces such things again. But until then, he's satisfied with letting Soru shed all the tears she's clearly been keeping in.
However, not wanting her to get sick or be too exhausted to move, Jahyeon carefully scoops Soru up into his arms to carry her back to her room, allowing her face to remain buried against his chest as she still sobs- And for good measure to better her mood later, he makes sure to pick up the flower Soru so carefully picked earlier up off the ground before he stands.
