Surprise

Summary:

It was Christmas Eve, and Jay was leading Nick and Daisy through the hallways of his mansion, having promised them a great surprise.

Notes:

Inspired by the prompt “fairy lights”. 🤍✨

This is an AU where Gatsby does not die, and he and Daisy sort out their relationship, but he is also dating Nick, and this is fine because Daisy and Nick are besties who are 100% okay with sharing a partner; so they are all living happily ever after in Gatsby's mansion. Is this plausible? Probably not. But I don’t care about plausibility, I just want to write fluff 😭 So, if you also do not care about plausibility, and would just like to read fluff, then please enjoy 😌

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“Oh, Jay, won't you give me a clue?”

“No, darling, that would spoil it! Don’t worry, you won’t have to wait for much longer.”

It was Christmas Eve, and Jay was leading Nick and Daisy through the hallways of his mansion, having promised them a great surprise.

Daisy, seeing that she could not extract any more information from him, floated instead to Nick, taking his arm with a sigh.

“Isn't he just beastly to keep us in suspense like this, Nicky?”

“Beastly,” Nick agreed, as Jay glanced back to smile at him. “But I’m sure whatever he’s got to show us will be worth it.”

“Quite right, old sport. And now you can see for yourself.”

Jay had stopped, just in front of the door to one of their living rooms.

Daisy beamed, stepping forward, but Jay stopped her.

“Close your eyes.”

“You’re terrible!” Daisy declared, lightly shoving him. But, she obeyed, and Nick followed suit.

The moment Jay opened the doors, Nick could see the glow of light through his eyelids.

Jay gently nudged Nick and Daisy into the room properly.

“Alright, now you can look.”

Upon opening his eyes, Nick almost had to close them again – for the room was blindingly glittering with hundreds (if not thousands) of Christmas lights, fashioned into sculptures with thin wire.

“Jay...!” Daisy gasped, her eyes sparkling, “It’s magical!”

She pulled him into an embrace, and he lifted her up and spun her around.

Once he put her down, she went to look more closely at all of the sculptures; and Jay came back towards Nick, placing an arm around his shoulders and a kiss on his cheek.

“What do you think, old sport?”

Nick tore his eyes away from the luminescence, meeting Jay's aquamarine gaze with a smile.

“It’s ethereal. Like you.”

Notes:

I’m not sure if Christmas light sculptures had been invented/were popular by the 1920s, but if they weren’t, then we’ll just say that Gatsby was ahead of his time 😩
