It was Saturday night at the Beilong family household, and Kira was standing in the doorway of the living room, leaning against the wall. She was in her usual black shift dress and flats. Over her dress, she had on a white cardigan. She had her arms crossed, as she watched Kyran and Kylo watch Seinfeld while eating popcorn for the 500th time.
Why do they keep watching this ridiculous show? And soda? Kyran knows how I feel about soda! I swear, he has been acting so weird lately.
“Mhmm, uh Kylo?” said Kira after clearing her throat to get Kylo and Kyran’s attention.
“Oh, mom! Hi, I didn’t see you there.” said Kylo, now looking at her.
“Um, Kylo, don’t you have homework you should be working on?”
“Uh, yeah, but dad said I could take a break and hang out with him.”
She glanced over at Kyran with her arms crossed and her eyebrow raised. Kyran looked at her, with his right shoulder sitting on the back of the couch.
“I think it’s fine if he watches a few episodes with me. He’s been studying for the midterms all day. You’re welcome to join us if you want.” said Kyran while grinning.
“Oh,no. I’m quite alright.”
“Ok, suit yourself.”
Kira turned around and rolled her eyes while going back to her and Kyran’s room.She walked up the marble spiral staircase, but stopped halfway to glance back at them. She watched them laugh together and eat their snacks that were filled with sugar and calories. When she got back to the master bedroom, she sat at her dark wooden vanity in her white cushioned stool and talked to her sister, Kayla while taking off her makeup with a wipe. Kayla was waiting for her green tea face mask to settle.
“Kira! Hi!”
“Hello, Kayla.”
“What are you doing on this lovely Saturday night?”
“Oh, you know, just being the villain in my family’s story, again.”
“What happened?”
“Well, I went downstairs to remind Kylo about his homework and saw him watching tv with Kyran again. Kyran basically brushed me off when I brought up Kylo’s midterms, and went back to drinking his sugar filled soda. It’s like they have their own little club or something.”
“What are they watching?”
“Seinfeld.”
“Oh, yeah. Kyran always loved that show.”
“He’s been acting so differently lately.”
“Different how?”
“He isn’t backing me up on the punishment we agreed on for Kylo, and has even started having coffee dates with Khana, despite how disrespectful she has been to me. It’s like he’s not even considering my way of doing things anymore.”
“I mean it is Kyran. He’s always cared more about what the kids think of him.”
“True.”
“Kyran will come back around. You two raised your family the way you did for a reason. He isn’t just going to forget about that.”
“It feels like he’s completely forgotten and thinks I’m some kind of villain for trying to do things my way.”
“Hehe, you know what is funny?”
“What?”
“You sound like mom.”
“Oh, god.”
