Chapter Text
Before The Beginning.
It was 11:AM, on a Sunday. The 9th of December, to be exact, but of course, none of the angels or demons really cared about what day or what time it was.
The world hadn't been made yet. The dark sky was empty. No noise except the chatter of angels, and the fluttering of wings.
Crowley, who had just been assigned as an angel, was fluttering around, getting used to his new appearance.
"I've got wings!" he yelled. "Real, actual wings!"
He beamed.
He was still young. In human years, he would have only been 20.
"Hi!" he flew over to a black-haired angel, whom was wearing a skirt which was a light shade of blue. "I was just wondering, where could I find some food? Or maybe water? Everything around here is so new." Despite Crowleys curiousness, he was still hungry, not necessarily for food, just in need of something... real. Everything in this universe seemed fake. Nothing seemed whole, or fully real.
The angel looked at Crowley with an odd expression. "No food here. Not really. You can find the energy you need to survive in Heaven's main room. You must be new. My name is Uriel."
Crowley shrugged, still confused and curious. He held out his hand to Uriel, motioning for a handshake.
Their hands touched, and clasped together.
Crowley smiled. "I don't really... have a name yet. Haven't thought of one. Or been assigned one. Not sure how things work here yet."
Uriel smiled. "You choose your name. I'm sure Heaven won't care, and even if they do, I'm not telling anyone."
Crowley nodded enthusiastically. "I kind of feel like someone who's name would start with an E. Epione? No." He shook his head. "Epione feels wrong." He stood on the edge of what felt like the end of the universe, and thought about what would suit him best. "Actually, a name that starts with C feels better."
Uriel stood and stared at Crowley, while he was in his own world trying to figure out what name suited him best.
"Crawley, perhaps?" he suggested.
Uriel shook her head. "Whatever you think fits. I've got to go. Heaven calls." She smiled. "Bye, new angel."
Crowley smiled brightly. Everything felt so new, and time felt like it was passing quicker than it ever had.

Time passed by, and Crowley eventually lost track of the days. He no longer knew how long he had been an angel. It could have been days, or weeks, maybe even months, but he had no idea.
He spent his days in Heaven, mostly. Cleaning the glass walls, the white floors, (Which were one of the only real things they had in Heaven.) everything he could manage to clean.
He had learned that there was, in fact, no food or drink in Heaven. There were energy pods. The sunlight (which seemed non-existent) converted into energy that angels could consume. Everything felt made-up and empty.
Except for Uriel, of course. She had stood by Crowley when he needed it.
But... nothing lasts forever.
Eventually, Uriel grew away from Crowley, as she was appointed as a higher-up angel. The two of them never talked anymore. It hurt Crowley, which he would never admit to. He had the guts to admit to himself that he loved Uriel, but never to actually tell someone how he felt. He would think about how Uriel stood up for him in the beginning, and how she helped him overcome the fear of the newness this universe brought him, and he'd look up at the empty sky, and sometimes a few tears would flow towards out of his brown eyes. Losing the one person who tried to understand how he felt made him feel a way he never wanted to feel again. He had over-loved before, but when he lost her, it felt like the world being ripped apart. He tried to cope with losing the only friend he had by reading, leaving reality, but the monthly updates from Hell were quite boring to read, and there was nothing else that he could actually read properly. Uriel leaving caused everything to feel the same.
Every single day felt like a faded copy of the one before. It was like Crowley was stuck in an endless loop.
Wake up. Clean Heaven's walls. Have a half-assed conversation with an angel in a random hallway. Read a book. Sleep. Wake up. Clean Heaven's walls. Have a half-assed conversation with an angel in a random hallway. Read a book. Sleep. Wake up. Clean Heaven's walls. Have a half-assed conversation with an angel in a random hallway. Read a book. Sleep.
Every day was the same. Time felt slow, yet fast at the same time.
He didn't mind it at first, but soon enough, it got tiring. Waking up, knowing that the day would be the same as the one before. He hated it and wanted to get away.
He was still a lower-down angel, so of course it was a bit boring, but the days feeling like a loop of nothingness... that was the breaking point.
Crowley had to get away from it. He needed to get away from the emptiness. The heartbreak. All of it.

"Hi, I'd like to speak to an archangel whom will be able to help me with my current situation." Crowley stood at a white desk, and spoke to an angel who he didn't really know, but knew was named Michael.
Michael nodded. "Please wait here."
Crowley stood at the end of the desk, staring at the painted ivory door in front of him, and waited for what felt like hours before Michael came back, and sat down in her chair. "They'll see you now." She motioned towards the door, and Crowley nodded.
His feet carried him, step by step, into the light of the room, where 5 archangels sat.
"Hi," he said nervously, and stepped forward.
The angels stared at him momentarily, and looked at each other, smiling. "Hello, Crowley. Let's get started."
