Digging her thumb into a knot in her lower back, Pansy sighed. She had been on her feet nearly all day preparing for tomorrow, and her back, feet… honestly, her whole body was telling her about it. But with the exception of a couple of things Sam went out to get, they were ready for their families tomorrow.
Pansy and Sam were not travelling anywhere this year, so they offered to host both their families together on Christmas Day. She was happy to do it, but she was exhausted. At seven months pregnant with her and Sam’s first child, Pansy was a little slower these days, and she became tired quicker than usual.
She was thankful that Sam was more than happy to help around their home by not only hanging the decorations but he didn't hesitate to help her in the kitchen. In fact, he would be starting the brisket tonight, so it would be ready for when everyone arrived at noon tomorrow. She wasn't planning to have much, but Pansy knew she wouldn't be able to say no to a little bit of Sam’s delicious brisket.
Picking up her mug of raspberry leaf tea, Pansy entered their living room just as the front door opened with her husband on the other side.
“Hello, love,” she greeted. “Did you get everything?”
“Yes. We have everything we need for tomorrow, and I've picked up some roast turkey, mashed potatoes, and gravy for dinner tonight. None of the vegetables looked very appetising, so I figured we would heat something up here.”
Pansy kissed his cheek. “You are an amazing husband. I'd forgotten entirely about dinner tonight.”
Sam squeezed her hand. “Why don't you go ahead and get comfortable while I go in the kitchen and put all this away.”
“That sounds perfect. We can reheat dinner later when we're ready to eat.”
Following his suggestion, Pansy settled into her favourite spot as she waited for him to return, knowing she would shift into his embrace once Sam joined her.
Sipping her tea, Pansy relished the peace and quiet of their home tonight. It would be the total opposite tomorrow, and while she was excited, Pansy was glad they had tonight.
She set her drink on the coffee table as Sam joined her with his own drink, hot cocoa from the smell wafting towards her. He sat at the corner of the sofa and let Pansy move to recline against his chest.
Melting into Sam’s embrace, Pansy shut her mind off for the evening. The crackling of the fire and the twinkling of the lights lulled her into an even more relaxed state.
Sam kissed the top of her head before he dropped his head back.
Their breaths grew even as they embraced each other and their peaceful evening, for this was their last Christmas, just the two of them.
