Emmet had done it.
Emmet and all his friends had saved Bricksburg, and all the other realms for that matter, from Lord Business. Peace had been restored, and everything was more or less back to normal. Well, not really, but as normal as you can get when your world as you know it had almost been completely destroyed.
A celebratory party was in order.
Thankfully, Emmet's small, generic, yet cosy apartment had not been directly in harms way. A few bricks from his balcony had been broken off, but nothing major.
He invited everyone back, hoping that he could fit everyone in his small home.
Surprisingly, he actually managed. With some... disassembling and rebuilding of Metalbeard, he made it work. He fit inside just fine otherwise.
They had had a celebratory toast, and just spent time together. Emmet, Wyldstyle, Benny, Metalbeard, Unikitty and Batman all together and having fun.
It was beginning to get late, but the noise never died down. Everyone was just happy to be alive, and too happy enjoying one another's company to be concerned with the time or the colour of the sky, or even the absence of the sun. Nothing switching on a lamp couldn't fix. Nobody was quite willing to let their time together end.
Emmet was having a blast, but he eventually needed to use the bathroom. He couldn't avoid it, it was inevitable, so he excused himself and made his way to his en suite.
He opened the door to his bedroom, and noticed his lamp was on. He didn't remember leaving any lights on...
He fully stepped into the room and closed the door behind him, only then seeing a dark figure sitting on the end of his bed.
He jumped in shock, exclaiming a small scream until the figure turned, and he realised it was only Batman.
"Oh, you scared me!"
Emmet visibly sighed in relief.
"Sorry, I... I didn't mean to."
Batman replied in his usual deep, monotone voice, but with a slight hint of something downcast.
"Are you okay..?"
He asked once he noticed the slightest sadness in his words. His voice always sounded the same, so any changes were noticeable immediately.
"Oh, yeah. Yeah, I'm fine."
He replied, nodding and trying to play it off.
"Whole saving the world thing, huh? Pretty cool."
Emmet moved to sit down next to him, keeping somewhat of a distance just to be cautious.
"Yeah!"
Batman waited a moment or two before speaking, the faded voices of everyone having fun in the other room filling the emptiness of the otherwise quiet space.
"You and, uh...Wy- Lucy. You two doing well?"
Emmet looked away, his expression for once unreadable.
"Well, actually, her and I have decided it's just not the right time right now."
He explained.
"We only decided about an hour or two ago. I think it's for the best."
Batman seemed surprised by this news, sitting up, intrigued.
"Oh, really?"
"Yeah. We're better as friends. Plus, she has alot going on, so..."
Batman listened carefully, and nodded in understanding a few times.
"I see."
He let the room go silent once more, looking around Emmet's room idly.
He looked to the other man after a moment, wondering something.
"You ever been in a relationship before?"
Emmet turned to face him once more.
"Me? No. Never caught anyone's attention, I guess. Not surprising to you, I'm sure..."
He turned his gaze away with a vaguely melancholy look.
Batman caught onto that look. It wasn't super apparent, but he could tell that Emmet still felt perhaps insecure about his supposed 'blandness'.
"Well, uh... if it makes you feel better..."
He said slowly, swallowing when Emmet's gaze returned to look at him.
"I think you're pretty cool. I mean, at first I thought you were kinda lame... but you did save the world. I think that makes you more than just an average guy. You proved me wrong."
Emmet smiled, his body relaxing slightly.
"Thanks... and y'know, if it makes you feel better, at first I thought you were just dark and brooding, but, you're actually very considerate. You're also smart and witty."
He complimented back in his usual exaggerated yet positive and optimistic fashion.
Batman huffed a low chuckle.
"Thanks."
Once more, the room went silent. But it was a comfortable silence. Their words of admiration for one another hung in the air, and they just soaked them and all the meaning and emotion behind them up.
Emmet turned once more, seeing the rare sight of Batman smiling. He wished he could see more, but he was always wearing that mask of his... would it be too much of a request to ask him to take it off..?
Well, you never know if you don't try, right?
"Could you take off your mask?"
Emmet bit the bullet and asked. If he said no, whatever. But he would prefer if he indulged him just this once.
Batman visibly hesitated.
Technically, he knew his identity was no secret at this point, but he supposed he just liked the shield of covering his face.
He did consider it, though. It would be different and uncomfortable for him, but they'd saved the world together. What's showing your face in comparison to that?
He swallowed his apprehension, and nodded very slowly.
"Alright. I mean, you've already seen my face, but, uh... sure."
He grabbed the sides of his mask, and took it off in one movement so he couldn't hesitate any more than he already had.
After a moment he set his mask on the bed behind him and looked to Emmet, awkwardly smiling.
"Happy?"
Emmet's smile mirrored Batman's, although his looked less forced.
"Yeah!"
He took in the sight. His sharp chiselled features, surprisingly piercing eyes, oddly charming dark, mussed hair.
"Doesn't it feel good to let that handsome face breathe?"
Batman noticed him looking, smoothing his hair in an attempt to make it look presentable.
His eyes looked up to Emmet as he asked his question.
"Handsome?"
He chuckled a little.
"Uh, I guess so. Yeah."
Emmet nodded, happy with that answer. He liked to see Batman genuinely smiling for once. It made him feel odd, in a good way.
"Y'know..."
Batman scooted closer to Emmet, seemingly dropping his somewhat shy demeanour once he remembered just exactly who he was talking to.
"You're not so bad yourself."
"Really?"
Emmet watched as the other man inched closer to him, not quite knowing what to expect.
This was a pleasant surprise, although he was still a little bit confused as to where this was going.
"Yeah. I would change your hair, maybe..."
He reached out his hand to mess with Emmets hair, ruffling it up a bit and pushing it into the style he had in mind for him.
"Oh, yeah. Just like that. I'd also change your outfit but, y'know... can't really help that. It is your uniform."
Emmet stayed quiet and let the other man style his hair.
He couldn't see it obviously, but he could feel it was a similar style to Batman's.
"Do I look more handsome to you now?"
"To me? ”
Batman sat back a little, wondering the intent of that question. The wording was interesting.
"Well... Sure."
He leaned back in, keeping his eyes fixed on Emmet and the new changes to his appearance.
He felt himself scoot closer subconsciously. It wasn't really an active decision, but he didn't stop it from happening.
To his surprise, Emmet leaned in a bit as well. The gap between them was next to gone now.
This was an unusual situation. They both knew that. And yet, nothing was done to stop it from playing out.
Instead, they both went with the flow.
Batman leaned in fully, following the way his body was telling him to go, and pressed his lips to Emmet's.
He felt Emmet freeze up and tense, then very slowly relax and kiss back in the most gentle way possible.
Batman was surprised to feel it, but leaned into it. He tilted his head and rested a hand on the side of Emmet's neck. He felt and heard Emmet make a small noise and let out a breath through his nose.
It was only a second before they parted. They could both hardly believe that it happened, just staring at one another in disbelief as if they weren't the ones who did it.
Batman swallowed, and backed up a little.
He noticed Emmet looking tense still, his face now flushed red.
"You okay..?"
He figured he'd ask. He didn't really know what else to say.
"Yeah. I'm okay."
Emmet smiled, but it was semi-awkward.
"Gonna be honest, I really need to pee."
He said in an embarrassed voice. He really didn't want to leave the other man, especially at this moment, but he couldn't help it.
"Oh, yeah, don't worry. You can- uh- go."
He leaned back fully and cleared his throat, composing himself to the best of his ability.
"Okay. Thank you."
Emmet sighed in relief. He was happy that Batman wasn't mad, or thought that he was purposefully leaving him.
He got up and quickly excused himself into his en suite.
Batman sat in shock of his own actions. He was not expecting their interaction to end like that, and it made him question alot of things.
He couldn't say he wasn't positively intrigued about what this meant for him and Emmet, though.
Emmet stood infront of his bathroom mirror first and foremost. He looked at himself, and the first thing he noticed was the unfamiliar hairstyle, then his tomato red cheeks.
"My first kiss was Batman ..."
He clarified quietly to himself in disbelief.
