Work Text:
‘Sunny please Poppet, just put the coat on! Fred’s going to be here any minute,’ pleaded Tubbo, holding out the coat for his daughter.
But then people can’t see my outfit
‘But it’s a cute coat! It’s pink and has a fur trim and everything!’ Tubbo looked anxiously at the door of the carriage, they’d said 7pm and it was 6.59. He’d wanted to be ready when Fred got here, it was a big deal today, A BIG DEAL. This was Fred and Sunny’s first time meeting and he was so nervous!
They were currently in Sunny’s golden-roofed train carriage and Tubbo was desperately trying to get her wrapped up and ready to leave. It was snowing gently outside and very cold. He himself had several layers on and a hat.
He brandished the coat, ‘Come on Queen, get the coat on!’
Sunny pulled a face but she did put her arms through the sleeves and Tubbo helped her with the buttons on the front; they were stiff for her little fingers to do. He pulled her fluffy yellow scarf from the dresser and tied it around her neck.
‘Now the hat!’
No! I want to wear my crown
‘Sweetie, you can wear the crown on top of the hat, I just need you to wear the hat cos it’s cold as fuck out there.’
She pulled a face but removed the pink crown allowing him to set the woolly hat on her head before she jammed the crown back down on top.
Suddenly there was a knock on the train carriage door.
‘OH SHIT!’ Tubbo jumped out of his skin - even though he was expecting it, it still surprised him. ‘Oh shit he’s here, he’s here Sunny, Fred’s here!’
Pa……be cool
No, you’re totally right Princess, I’m being embarrassing right now, pull it together you idiot!’ Tubbo admonished himself. He straightened up, rolled his shoulders back and took a deep breath. Why was he more nervous than Sunny for fucks sake?!
He stepped forwards and wrenched the carriage door aside.
‘Hi!’ shit his voice cracked.
Fred was standing there, similarly wrapped up in the cold with a blue duffle jacket, scarf and a blue beanie on his head. He was so tall and impossibly, effortlessly, handsome. Tubbo knew he looked like a scruffy ragamuffin next to Fred, but he hoped that it was part of his charm. Some of Fred’s white wavy hair was escaping out of the beanie onto his forehead, Tubbo desperately wanted to card his fingers through Fred’s hair, it always looked so soft.
Fred waved in greeting and signed Hi Tubbo, how are you?
‘I’m good man, how are you?’ Tubbo responded, smiling.
I’m good thank you, I’m looking forward to today.
‘Great! Me too!’ cried Tubbo. It was then he felt little arms wrap around his legs as Sunny peered around him, peeking out of the carriage.
‘Oh! Right!’ Tubbo hopped down from the carriage and held out a hand to help Sunny down as well, ‘Watch your step little Miss,’ he said as he guided her down to the snow-covered ground. Her petite yellow wellies crunched as they landed in the snow.
Tubbo turned to Fred who on this level was now several inches taller than him, ‘Fred, this is my daughter Sunny, Sunny Honey, this is my….um…my…er, this is Fred.’ He wasn’t sure what to call Fred, penpals? No; They were past that, now that Tubbo had rescued him from the shack in the woods. Friends? No; it was something more than that surely? Boyfriends? No; they hadn’t properly admitted their feelings to one another yet. Ugh. Well, who the fuck needs labels anyway? He was Fred and that would do for now.
Sunny was busy signing to Fred, Hi Fred, nice to meet you, my Pa has told me lots about you.
Hi Sunny, nice to meet you too, I’ve been told many good things about you as well.
Of course you have, I’m the best.
Tubbo watched with a smile as Fred threw his head back and laughed, oh thank god he finds her funny and not annoying. Sunny’s self-confidence did rub some Islanders up the wrong way, but that was what made her amazing. He loved her so much.
Are you looking forward to the Christmas Market today? asked Fred of both of them.
‘Yeah!!’ responded Tubbo, Sunny nodded enthusiastically.
Have you ever been to a Christmas Market before?
No. But Pa’s told me what they are.
‘They’re so cool Sunshine!’ said Tubbo, excitedly, ‘All wholesome and cosy vibes you know?’ he looked at Fred, expecting agreement.
I wouldn’t know, I’ve never been signed Fred.
‘WHAT?!?! You’ve never been to a Christmas Market? Like ever?!?!’
Fred just shrugged.
Tubbo slumped his shoulders in disappointment, ‘Well fuck, the Federation sure know how to keep you from the good stuff.’ But then he brightened, ‘But hey! I can show you both around!’
Fred and Sunny both nodded at him.
Yes please
Let’s go Pa!
‘Let’s go gang!’ Tubbo cried, pulling out his warpstone, ‘Warp to Spawn and we’ll go from there!’
And the three of them whisked out of the TubChunk.
~
After a quick pit-stop in Spawn they hopped through the red sharestone called ‘Christmas Village’ and landed in a wooded biome many thousands of blocks away.
Immediately, the smell of woodsmoke, caramel and chocolate wafted up Tubbo’s nose. He turned on the spot, taking all the scene in, ‘Holy Shit this place is amazing!’ he cried out.
There was a main path snaking its way through the conifer trees leading them to a village made of log cabins. Each cabin seemed to be its own stall, with a villager trading their wares. He could make out a giant Christmas tree in the distance, at the centre of the clearing with the cabins circled around it. The snow had been cleared to the sides, leaving the path clear and huge snow mounds against the bases of the trees. The way to the village was lit with fairy lights and lanterns, their soft glow looking magical in the dim Winter evening.
Sunny was practically vibrating with excitement. Come on Pa! she signed and set off running to the village.
Tubbo snickered, ‘Oh well there she goes, not waiting for us I see!’
He heard Fred chuckle beside him, Shall we go?
‘Yeah let’s!’
As they made their way along the winding path, Sunny ahead of them skipping and looking adorable in her Winter coat, Tubbo realised it was just him and Fred.
‘So….’ He started, ‘How have you been man?’ He looked sideways at Fred. God even his profile is sharp. He looked away quickly; he didn’t want to be caught staring.
I’ve been good. The boss has kept me busy at the Office, but we’re managing everything. I’m happy I could swap shifts and get the evening off. I’m glad I could come. Sunny seems like a really great kid.
Tubbo felt his heart swell, equal parts relieved and happy that Fred liked Sunny. ‘Sunny’s amazing dude. She’s a lot at first, I get that, she’s a material girl you know? She likes money and stuff, some people don’t like that. I think it’s hilarious. I love it. She’s got aspirations you know? She wants to go places’.
Fred nodded before signing Well, lucky she’s got you as her father then.
Tubbo blushed and ran a hand through his curls sticking out from under his beanie, ‘Well….I mean….I try…I’ve got my factories.’
You’re very industrious, you work hard, but you treat people very kindly, I like that about you.
‘Oh stop it!’ said Tubbo gesturing for Fred to stop signing, but he felt his face flaming.
Stop what? Can’t I say that I like you? Fred paused and then signed Because I do.
Tubbo spluttered, ‘I…um…well…I mean sure you can….I just…um give a guy a warning you know?’
Fred cocked his head to the side, looking at Tubbo like he was contemplating something. He must know. He MUST know the effect he has on me. HOW does he not know? That bastard. That fucking handsome bastard.
Okay I’ll warn you next time I say something like that. Although…I will admit I like the effect it has on you. Did you know your face has changed colour?
Tubbo buried his face in his hands, ‘NO! It has NOT!’ he cried but the words came out very muffled and he realised he needed to move his hands away to see what Fred was signing in response.
It has. You’ve gone very pink. Are you okay?
‘I’m fine,’ insisted Tubbo and he made to stride off down the path, anything to distance himself from his embarrassment; he was very much not fine. But then suddenly he felt a hand in his. He looked down. Fred had reached out and grabbed his hand as if to stop him.
There was a long moment where the two of them stood there, hands together.
But then Fred dropped Tubbo’s hand like a stone, I’m sorry he signed.
‘No, it’s- it’s okay,’ stuttered Tubbo and he practically snatched Fred’s hand back. ‘It’s very okay dude,’
Okay signed Fred with his free hand.
The two of them didn’t talk anymore as they made their way along the remaining stretch of path. But Tubbo thought his mind might explode.
You’re holding hands. You’re h o l d I n g h a n d s. Stay calm, stay cool, oh thank God I’m wearing gloves so he can’t feel how sweaty my palms are. Oh, his hands are so big. That’s a nice grip, firm but not too tight. He’s so good looking. Fuck. Stop freaking out. Stay cool man. You’re just holding hands. No big deal. No big deal. This is a HUGE DEAL. MASSIVE. Oh fuck, he’s holding my hand. Oh fuck oh fuck. What do I do now? What if my nose is itchy? I can’t scratch my nose. Oh fuck now my nose actually IS itchy. Fuuuuuuck. It’s fine. I’ll just leave it. He’s holding my hand. They’ll have to cut it off before I let go. But be cool. Stay cool King.
But he was jolted from his thoughts as Sunny came barrelling into him.
‘Ooof!’ he said, as the air was knocked out of him, ‘What is it darling?’
Pa, stop being a slow poke. COME ONNNNNNNNN
Oh heck she was shout-signing; ‘We’re coming Sun-Sun,’ he assured her, ‘Where do you want to go first?’
EVERYWHERE
‘Okay but-‘ he was cut off from saying anymore by her grabbing his other hand and dragging him into the Christmas Village and to the first cabin. Tubbo looked back at Fred who was now also getting tugged along by proxy, SORRY he mouthed at Fred.
Fred shook his head amicably, It’s fine!
They came to the entrance of the first cabin, it appeared to be selling Christmas ornaments. They all sparkled appealingly in the light evening breeze. There were exquisite blown glass baubles, finely made ceramic ornaments and charmingly hand-sewn felt decorations. All of them were the likeness of the Island Eggs.
ITS MEEEEEEEEEEEEE
‘Oh my God Sunny it IS you!’ exclaimed Tubbo upon seeing miniature ornamental representations of his daughter.
I LOOK FANTASTIC. PA WE NEED THEM ALL. ALL THE SUNNYS.
‘All?’ said Tubbo, he’d clocked the price of them out of the corner of his eye. They were a steep 25 emeralds per item. He might be a millionaire when it came to deep slate cobblestone but he was emerald poor. Really should have put more emeralds in my inventory before coming here. Also, what a SCAM. It’s outrageous they charge this much.
‘But Sunny my dear, if we buy them all, then no one else will have the chance to have a Sunny. Imagine that, everyone else having their very own Poultry Princess on their tree? How good would that be?’ He prayed that would pacify her desire to bankrupt him at the very first stall.
Good point Pa. Let’s get one and leave some for everyone else.
Phew.
Tubbo felt Fred let go of his hand and was momentarily sad but when he looked over and saw that Fred was leaning in close to inspect the Egg Christmas tree decorations his heart melted. He still couldn’t believe Fred was here….when he’d gone missing, and then when he’d found him in the woods….It was great to have him back. I will murder Quackity next time I see him for what he did to Fred. I will wring Big Q’s neck, I swear it.
Fred was taking his gloves off to run long white fingers marked with black nail polish down the glass bauble of Ramon. He paused for a second over the little moustache and smiled a small smile to himself. Tubbo almost felt like he was intruding to see something so private. Fred wasn’t a very expressive person, usually so stoic and with a neutral face. You had to look hard for the little signs that Fred was feeling or thinking something. Luckily, Tubbo was getting more familiar at spotting these glimpses into Fred’s mind, and Fred was certainly getting more expressive as time went on and Tubbo hung out with him. Maybe it was exposure to something other than the sterile Federation environment, leading to the true identity and personality of Fred being revealed. Fred the person with thoughts and feelings and not the government worker devoid of emotion and deprived of the uniqueness of “self”.
He watched as Fred leaned back from inspecting the ornaments and signed, These are very well made. I like them a lot. They’re good quality.
‘They really are,’ Tubbo agreed. It filled him with no small amount of joy to see Fred experiencing new things and watching him discover what he liked or didn’t like.
Just then, he felt a tug at his sleeve, it was Sunny and he was reminded of the task at hand. ‘Oh um, can we have one of these please?’ he asked politely, to the villager, ‘One of Sunny please.’
The villager looked unimpressed but harrumphed in response and set about packaging up the delicate glass bauble of Sunny. Tubbo handed over practically all of his emeralds and took the precious package and put it in his inventory.
‘Right where to next?’ he asked.
He felt a large warm hand slip back into his as Sunny eagerly led them to the next cabin. And if anyone saw Tubbo take off his own glove to better hold Fred’s hand then no you didn’t.
They went from stall to stall, marvelling at the wares of each. There were fantastic paintings at the next one; bold splashes of colour in abstract patterns bouncing across the canvas. Sunny predictably wanted them all, but Tubbo was resistant.
Sunny’s signs got “louder” as she and Tubbo went back and forth on the issue.
‘Sunnysunnysunny,’ reasoned Tubbo, ‘My sweet girl, we don’t even have a house. And I ain’t putting these in the factory kiddo, there’s nowhere for them to go!’
But then Sunny drew out her killer weapon and looked up at him with pleading eyes and oh shit are those fake tears? And therefore, they did end up purchasing a small little painting for the wall of her train carriage. It also emptied Tubbo’s wallet of all his remaining emeralds.
Next there was a jewellery stall resulting in Tubbo and Fred standing for a good long while as Sunny tried on every single one of the necklaces.
Do you like jewellery? Asked Fred looking inquisitively at the different rings, bracelets, earrings and necklaces on offer.
Tubbo shrugged, ‘Eh I’m not really bothered.’
Is it more of a thing for women? Fred was looking at Sunny as she perused the pearl necklaces.
‘No! I mean you wear what you want to King, its personal preference. I’m just, I’m more of a practical-work-with-my-hands sort of person. I can’t be wearing stuff that will matter if it gets dirty or broken or something. I need durability and practicality over prettiness.’
Fred nodded contemplatively in response as Tubbo continued: ‘But Sunny, on the other hand is a frickin’ Girlboss and she likes jewellery, so I guess I’ll be digging deep into the old wallet for this. I fuckin hope they take diamonds bro, I’m all out of emeralds!’
In the end, Sunny settled on a string of pearls which caused Tubbo to gawk at the price, but he did dutifully place a handful of diamonds into the open palm of the villager. And the pearls were wrapped up carefully and placed alongside the Sunny bauble and the modernist art piece in his inventory.
Next was a candle stall, then a clothing stall. Both substantially dented Tubbo’s inventory in terms of space and wealth. But anything for his Sunny; seeing her twirl around with a new fluffy scarf made him feel like his heart was going to burst. He never knew he could feel love like this. She’d had such a rough start in life, he’d give her everything to ensure she had a happy childhood, free from neglect or fear.
By the time they got to the last stall; a metalworker’s, Sunny was looking bored. Fred seemed interested in looking around a little longer so Tubbo offered to take Sunny to the food stalls and Fred could catch up.
They were now approaching the giant Christmas tree. It appeared all the food stalls were around the tree encircling it. As Tubbo and Sunny did a cursory lap to see what enticing food was on offer he took the opportunity to catch up with her.
‘Soooooooooooo, what do you think of Fred?’ he asked, wringing his hands together nervously.
He seems cool. Quiet but nice. He seems to know good quality when he sees it.
Then, Is he rich?
‘Erm….I don’t know y’know?’ said Tubbo, pondering.
He’s got a job at least, isn’t he a manager?
‘Yeah, he’s like one of the more senior ranks I guess,’ agreed Tubbo, he was trying to remember Fred’s government name, it’d been so long since he’d called him that. It felt like he’d always been just Fred. ‘But I don’t even know if they get paid anything! Fit’s always complaining about his paycheck.’
Sunny sniffed, Well, we’re rich enough for all of us anyway.
Tubbo laughed. ‘So, you’d be okay with him hanging out with us more?’
Sure, I just want the best for you Pa. I know you like him a lot.
‘I do Poppet, I do really like him,’ said Tubbo self-consciously, he took off his hat and rubbed his hands through his hair messing it all up. He hadn’t realised how much he’d been anxiously hoping for Sunny’s approval of Fred. When it had just been him, he’d not had to think about any wider consequences of him pursuing his friendship (and hopefully something more) with Fred. But now Sunny was in his life, he had someone really important to consider. She was almost completely reliant on him, and she needed to come first. Any relationship, be it pen pal, friend or romantic interest needed to be approached much more carefully. He genuinely hoped Fred could fit into their lives, but it had to be okay with the both of them, not just him. He felt his stomach settle for the first time all day, relief flooding through him; her approval meant a great deal.
Sunny jolted him out of his thoughts by prodding him in the side, he looked up quickly - Fred was approaching them.
‘Hiya!’ called out Tubbo, jamming his hat back on his head.
Hi Fred greeted them, Tubbo I got you a gift. I know it’s tradition to exchange gifts at this time of the year.
‘WHAT?!?!?’ screeched Tubbo, holy shit a PRESENT? He was used to them exchanging flowers, but this was a whole-ass fancy present Fred had spent actual money on. Holy shit.
And then panic set in, ‘But I haven’t got you anything!’ he exclaimed despairingly. Way to go Toby. He berated himself. It’s Christmas, why didn’t you think of getting Fred anything?
But Fred was shaking his head, Your invitation to come here this evening was the gift He signed. I took it as so. What I mean to say is, your company is the gift. I do not require anything more.
‘But-’ Tubbo protested.
Fred however, cut him off, I mean it. I don’t need anything in return. Please accept. And then he turned to Sunny, Sunny I got you a present too.
Sunny was similarly astonished and excited. A GIFT. FOR MEEEEEEEEEEE???????
Fred laughed at her enthusiasm as he handed them each a parcel neatly wrapped in white tissue paper.
Sunny immediately ripped hers open with gusto, revealing the contents and causing her and Tubbo to gasp. It was a felt ornament from the first shop they’d stopped at, only this one wasn’t of an Egg, it was of Tubbo. The likeness was uncanny right down to the goggles, the familiar blue-green eyes, and the spanner strapped across his back.
‘What the fuck?!’ yelled Tubbo, looking from the decoration to Fred, to the decoration, then back to Fred again. ‘What the fuckkkk? Where the FUCK did you get that?! I never saw any of them in the shop?!’
Sunny held it up to get a better look, IT’S MY PAAAAAAAAAAAA
Fred nodded and signed, I asked them to craft it for you, this way you and your father can be on the tree together.
‘I’m going to throw-up that’s so fucking sweet, oh my fucking god,’ said Tubbo, wheezing slightly. He watched, dumbstruck as Sunny twirled the miniature version of him around to observe from all angles.
Are you okay?
‘Oh shit, yeah sorry, it’s just a turn of phrase, sorry! I’m okay, I’m not really going to be sick. It’s just, that’s such a thoughtful gift oh my god,’ Tubbo looked down at the wrapped present in his hands. It had some weight to it. After Sunny’s gift he was almost scared to open it. With some trepidation he tugged at the tissue paper slowly, to expose the item within.
It was a new pair of goggles. They were made out of the finest diamond-alloy with gold trim and wait…was that netherite clasping???! ‘Holy shit dude, what the fuck?’ he whispered, barely audible.
You don’t like it? Fred’s barely there expression was one of confusion.
Tubbo snatched the goggles up close to his chest, ‘No! I fucking LOVE them. Oh my god, they’re so much better than my old ones. But this is…..this is such a generous present holy shit!’
You said you value practicality and durability. So I had to get the ones with the most durability for you. And these will help you when you are building all your fantastic machines, explained Fred.
Tubbo just gawped at him in amazement. He knew his eyes were as wide as saucers right now. This was hands down the best, most thoughtful thing he’d ever received, from anyone.
He stared up at Fred, ‘This is…..this is…amazing,’ he breathed. He met Fred’s eyes, they were an impossible light blue, like ice, crystal clear. Fred smiled back at him with the widest smile Tubbo had ever seen him make. There was a long moment where they just stood there, looking at each other, it could have been seconds, minutes, days, a lifetime.
Tubbo eventually broke eye contact and looked back down at the goggles he was cradling in his hands. ‘Oh my god,’ he murmured, ‘Thank you,’
Suddenly there was a rustle and Fred was stepping closer, very close, and there was a soft hand on his arm and then his face was even closer and then pressure on his cheek. A peck. A quick kiss. And Fred was withdrawing as quick as he’d moved in.
You’re very welcome.
Tubbo stopped breathing. Had Fred…..did Fred just?....was that a KISS?!??!?!
HOLY FUCKING SHIT.
Fred was moving away already, Shall we get some food? I’m hungry he signed so casually, as if he hadn’t just kissed Tubbo. Yet Tubbo felt like he’d been whacked over the head with Bagi’s frying pan. Fred sidled off to check out the nearest food stall leaving Tubbo standing in shock and Sunny looking between them hands over her mouth.
PAAAAAAAA she signed very loudly.
PAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
PA HE’S RICH, HANDSOME AND GIVES GIFTS AND KISSES
WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?????
‘Sunny,’ hissed Tubbo, praying that Fred was out of earshot, ‘Princess, I can’t just…we’re not….um…..oh my god, he just kissed me!’ He just fucking kissed me. We win these!!
KEEP IT COOL PA
‘I’m trying honey, but I….I’m not breathing properly at the moment,’ Tubbo gasped.
Sunny rolled her eyes at him, even her sunglasses didn’t obscure it. Pull it together, you clearly impressed him, he likes you. BE COOL
‘Yes, be cool, be cool, I’m being cool. I’m so cool right now, so cool!’ he said in a rush, still not able to quite catch his breath. He looked down at the goggles again before realising he should maybe wear them. Even the leather strap felt so buttery in his hands as he adjusted it so they sat right on his head, over his beanie.
‘How do I look Sunny?’ he asked, posing and turning his head.
Looking fabulous Pa she replied. She bounced up and down on the spot, Can we get food now? I’m HUNGRY.
‘Lead the way your Majesty,’ said Tubbo brightly and they made their way over to Fred who was checking out the food stands.
Fred glanced across at them as they approached, he pointed to the goggles, They suit you. You look good in them.
And Tubbo was blushing again, cute guy compliments you, what do you expect? ‘Thanks King,’ he answered. ‘So….um…what are we thinking?’ he said, referring to the food stands.
HOT CHOCOLATE signed Sunny excitably.
‘Three hot chocolates with whipped cream and marshmallows please my good sir!’ cried Tubbo to the villager trader, brandishing diamonds in his hand. ‘And then! Crêpes!’
Hot chocolates and crêpes acquired, the three of them went and sat on one of the benches near the base of the giant Christmas tree.
This is very good food, signed Fred, looking pleased with his crêpe.
‘Dude they’re fucking GOAT’ed,’ agreed Tubbo around a mouthful of warm, gooey pancake, ‘And you always have to get hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows bro, or else you’re missing out!’
Fred nodded in agreement as he took a bite of crêpe, however, unbeknownst to him it had left some powdered sugar on his nose. Tubbo only noticed it himself because he was staring at Fred. Again.
‘You’ve um, you’ve got some sugar on your nose King,’ he mumbled.
Oh? signed Fred and he tried to glance down but the result was he simply looked cross-eyed. Tubbo laughed, amused at the sight.
‘Let me help you dude,’ he said and he leaned over to gently brush Fred’s nose with the cuff of his coat. ‘This okay?’ he paused right before wiping.
Fred’s eyes glanced up at him and away almost immediately, but he nodded.
Tubbo gently reach out and held Fred’s chin in place with one hand whilst he erased the powdered sugar from Fred’s nose. He tried to not get too distracted at the way Fred’s white eyelashes fluttered at Tubbo’s close proximity. This was the closest he’d ever gotten to Fred and he was completely taking the opportunity to stare unimpeded at the other man. His face was angular, sharp cheekbones and jawline and a strong nose and brow. Everything about him was pale; from his white tufted hair, to his white eyebrows and lashes, and his glacier eyes. Even his lips were a pale pink, full, and looking ever so kissable. Oh god, I’ve got it so bad for him. He’s so fucking attractive. I’m head over heels for him. Fuckkkkk.
Satisfied with the job, Tubbo couldn’t help himself and booped Fred’s nose gently before sitting back in his seat. Fred’s eyes flew open in surprise, and Tubbo grinned.
…..Thank you, signed Fred, the movement slightly unsteady, flushing in embarrassment. Tubbo almost gaped, this was the first time he thought he’d seen any hint of colour reach Fred’s face, but there was a slight pinking of his cheeks at that. And just when you thought he couldn’t get any prettier, he goes and does this.
Desperate for a diversion, he checked on Sunny; she was chowing down furiously on her crêpe and was soon finished. What now Pa?
‘Well darling daughter, I think we’ll be heading back soon, it’s nearly time for bed alright?’
Sunny didn’t protest much, she really was very good like that, always happy to get her beauty sleep. The three of them finished up their hot chocolates and made their way back through the village to the Sharestone. They could have just warped but Tubbo had a sneaking suspicion that they all wanted to stay in this magical place just a little bit longer. Eking out more time in the enchanted Christmas Village in the woods. And it meant he could hold Fred’s hand some more, although he nearly tripped flat on his face when Fred started absently tracing his thumb along the back of Tubbo’s thumb in gentle strokes. That’s hella fucking distracting, oh my god.
With once last heavy glance around, soaking it all up, they warped back to Tubhaus and accompanied Sunny to her train carriage. Wait here! She signed to the pair of them, and with a helping hand from Tubbo she hopped up the stairs to the carriage and dashed inside.
‘What’s she doing?’ said Tubbo bewildered, standing on his tiptoes to try and get a peek inside her room. But upon seeing nothing, he instead moved to stand close to Fred. ‘I hope she’s quick, holy shit it’s freezing!’
Fred, ever the practical man, withdrew a campfire from his inventory and set it down on the ground, the warmth from the flames heating them almost immediately, ‘Thanks man!’
Sunny reappeared at the carriage entrance and without so much as a warning tossed a glinting object to Fred. With quick reflexes he caught it and Tubbo craned to see what was in his hands - it was a crown! Fred was looking at it with some confusion. Tubbo found he enjoyed this expression on Fred, he liked the way his eyebrows pinched together, and his bottom lip pouted ever so slightly.
‘Oh Sunny!’ he proclaimed happily, ‘This is AWESOME! Fred!! She only gives those to people she really likes. Mostly people who work for her, but still, she likes them very much!’ he laughed loudly, ‘Sunny! My Prima Donna girl, what job does dear Fred have?’
No job, he’s one of the family. He’s Pa’s special friend.
‘Oh. Oh WOW,’ exclaimed Tubbo, feeling himself turn red again. ‘Wow that’s huge, erm….wow thanks Sunny.’
He also gives great gifts.
Tubbo laughed, ‘HAH! There it is! Hahahaha! I knew it! You did good Fred!’
Fred looked up at Sunny and smiled, ‘Gifts are lovely things to exchange. However, the best things in life are free. Like family. I am extremely honoured to be considered as part of your family. That means a great deal for me. Thank you so much Sunny. And thank you for the crown, I shall treasure it, the same way I do your company. Thank you both for welcoming me with such warm, open and loving hearts.’ And with that he settled the crown on top of his hat.
Tubbo felt like he might cry; a lump had formed in his throat as Fred had been signing, the other man was so keenly earnest and endearing. To witness such heartfelt words from Fred….it was like he was communicating everything Tubbo felt inside but didn’t have the right words to express.
‘Anytime Fred, anytime man,’ he said, throat thick. Today had been so wonderful. He wished he could bottle it all up and store it in his factory, something to take out and marvel over when he needed a pick-me-up.
Sunny yawned and Tubbo remembered it was her bedtime, ‘Oh Sunny, let me put you to bed Queen.’ He clambered into the train carriage alongside his daughter before hesitating. He looked back at Fred standing there in the cold, snowy night.
‘I’ll be two minutes,’ he assured the other man, ‘I’m just going to put Sunny to bed and then I’ll come say goodbye….unless you’ve got to go now?’
I can wait signed Fred and he stepped closer to the campfire. The golden crown on his head shone in the firelight.
‘Won’t be long!’ Tubbo called out.
In the carriage, he helped Sunny out of her warm outer layers and into her pyjamas, folding her clothes up as she settled in bed. He pulled the covers up to her chin and tucked her in. Since Sunny’s arrival this had swiftly become the new best part of his days on the Island, putting her to bed and watching until she fell asleep, knowing she was safe and loved and tomorrow would be a promise of a whole ‘nother adventure.
She fell asleep quickly, tired from the long day and the evening excitement. He leaned in to remove the pink crown from her head, leaving a soft kiss on her forehead. ‘Goodnight sweetheart,’ he whispered and backed out of the carriage as quiet as a mouse.
He closed the door behind him and stepped back into the cold to see Fred.
She asleep?
‘Yeah, dead to the world,’ he chuckled stepping in close to the fire and to Fred.
‘So-‘ he started, as Fred also began to sign. ‘No you go first King-‘ Tubbo insisted.
Fred smiled and signed I just wanted to thank you again for today Tubbo. I had a really nice time with you and Sunny.
‘Yeah so did I!’ said Tubbo brightly and honestly, ‘It was really nice, she really likes you…..and-so-do-I,’ he said hurriedly, rushing to get the words out.
Fred cocked his head, Oh?
‘Don’t play dumb, you know this!’ cried Tubbo, trying to look anywhere but Fred, however it was getting increasingly harder because somehow they’d ended up very close to one another, like forces being pulled in by gravity.
You’re going pink again, observed Fred.
‘Oh for fuck’s sake,’ swore Tubbo, wringing his hands together, still not looking directly at the other man.
I like it on you. You get so flustered, it’s cute.
‘And why are you always so…so….so,’ Tubbo struggled to find the right words.
So what?
‘So fucking perfect that’s what,’ said Tubbo, finally looking up at Fred. They were so close now, inches apart; Tubbo could feel the warmth radiating off the other man.
I’m hardly perfect, in fact I’m worried that’s a problem-
‘-Shush,’ interrupted Tubbo, his heart was threatening to leap out of his chest because of how hard and fast it was beating. He needed to do it now before he chickened out.
He stretched up on his tip toes, took Fred’s face in his hands and whispered, ‘You’re so stoic and modest, yet so fucking wonderfully generous and caring and kind and I love it,’ and then he kissed him.
At first there was no response and Tubbo was freaking out. Did I overstep a boundary? Oh fuck, have I read this wrong? Does he not like me in that way? Oh it’s over, it’s so over. It’s fucking joever. Oh fuck, oh god, oh shit-
But then Fred sighed against his mouth and tentatively moved his lips against his.
Oh we’re SO back!
He kissed Fred back enthusiastically, throwing his arms around Fred’s neck and pressing in close. Gentle arms came around his back in response, as they stood there, holding one another and kissing. Warm lips pressed against each other, over and over, revelling in the sensation. It was cold outside but Tubbo felt none of it, he was burning up, melting into Fred’s arms. Their breath intermingled, clouding and billowing in the frozen air.
After several long, glorious moments Tubbo pulled back. He looked up at Fred, the other man’s cheeks were stained pink, noticeable even in the low light. His lips were plump and parted and his hair was mussed from Tubbo raking a hand through it at some point, almost dislodging the beanie and crown, his eyes were dark and glowed in the flickering firelight. He looked like he’d been well kissed.
It was a look Tubbo adored on him.
‘Well, that was nice!’ he declared.
Fred looked faintly dazed.
‘It was nice?’ asked Tubbo, feeling panic creep into his brain.
Fred released his arms from around Tubbo to sign somewhat shakily, Yes, yes. I wasn’t expecting it. I wasn’t expecting it to feel so nice.
‘Oh thank god, you had me worried,’ breathed Tubbo, then he looked up at Fred impishly, ‘Did you know you’ve gone red now?’
Quick as a shot, Fred brought his hands up to his own cheeks, eyes going wide as he felt the flaming skin.
Oh wow
Tubbo grinned, ‘Kissing’s the best man, we should do more of it,’
Now?
‘Well, whenever you want, no pressure man. I’m always up for kissing but don’t want to rush you.’ I’d kiss you every day if you’d let me, he thought, but he was determined to go at a pace Fred felt comfortable with. He knew this was all very new for him.
I think I’m good for now. I did like it though. I liked kissing you.
‘Great!’ said Tubbo, ‘Shall we call it a night then?’
Yes. I should get back home. Fred paused for a second then signed, Can I still write to you? Sometimes it’s easier to organise my thoughts that way. I like being with you, spending time with you, but it does scramble my thoughts…. Because I like you.
Same here my dude. You have no fucking idea what you do to me. But Tubbo made to reassure Fred, ‘Of course you can! Anytime man! I’ll keep checking our usual spot.’
Fred squared his shoulders and smiled, Okay I will write to you. I want to see you and Sunny again.
‘King, you know you can come over anytime! You’re so welcome!’ said Tubbo brightly. He felt like he was floating.
Fred reached out and squeezed Tubbo’s hand one last time, his cheeks were still flushed and his lips still pinked, waved a last goodbye and then warped out of sight.
Left in the dark and cold outside Sunny’s Carriage Tubbo started doing a little dance to himself, he felt so full of emotion he might spontaneously combust. He couldn’t believe the day he’d had. He’d been so extremely nervous, but it had all been so amazing. Tubbo was flying high on cloud nine and didn’t want to come down anytime soon. He could go to bed…but fuck that, he was so full of energy now, he decided to go work on his factories some more….maybe he could make a hot chocolate factory? That’d be fucking awesome. Sunny and Fred would love that. Yes! He’d go do that.
And with a wild whoop! he sped off towards his warehouse, brain already running far ahead of him, ticking over at a million miles an hour.
