Work Text:

A bright light was shining in his face.

Grian blinked wearily, shielding his eyes from the light with his hand as he sat up.

Sam was on top of him, grinning widely and holding up his phone, the flashlight on and aimed directly at Grian's face.

Grian lightly swatted the phone away, squinting up at Sam.

“What time is it?” His voice was deep, his throat thick with sleep. With the phone light no longer in his face, Grian could see the light dimly streaming in through their curtains.

“Uhmmmm… About nine-ish? We've been waiting for you since seven!” Sam climbed off of Grian, allowing him to sit up fully.

“Who's ‘we’?” Grian turned so his legs were hanging over the side of the bed. He rubbed the sleep out of his eyes, staring blankly at Sam.

“Me and Coolment! I'm actually not sure when he got up, he's up at some crazy hours sometimes.” Sam pulled Grian along, rattling on about how Coolment was waking Taurtis up, and about how they'd been waiting for hours.

Sam deposited him on the couch, then ran back into their shared bedroom.

Grian slumped in his seat, still groggy with sleep. The sound of a door opening caught his attention. He looked towards the noise, greeted with the sight of a grouchy Taurtis.

Taurtis got nudged out of the room, presumably by Coolment, with the door then shutting behind him. Taurtis walked over, a blanket wrapped around his shoulders.

Taurtis joined him sitting on the couch, a scowl present on his face. Taurtis had been out late working at 7/11, so he was unhappy to be awoken.

Most people wouldn't dare work Christmas Eve in a busy city, but Taurtis had nowhere better to be, and holidays paid extra. Food prices seemed to be constantly rising, so the extra money was always helpful.

Coolment opened the door a few minutes later, arms full of presents, both from him and from Taurtis.

He set them on the floor in front of the tv before taking a seat on the other couch.

Almost as soon as Coolment sat down, Sam reappeared. His arms were also full of presents, which he brought over to the tv as well.

Sam began passing out presents, handing each person a horribly wrapped box.

Grian could see the box easily, as the wrapping had a huge tear in the side, but he chose not to bring attention to it. It was the thought that counted, after all.

It didn't take long for everyone to pass out and unwrap their gifts, especially since Coolment's presents were all in envelopes.

Since not many of them had money with which to purchase gifts, a lot of the gifts were homemade. A lot of hand-written coupons were passed around, promising to do this and that.

There were a few gifts that Sam tried to claim were homemade, but luckily Grian didn't feel like lecturing Sam about the ethics of theft on Christmas, so he didn't argue.

Sam had gotten Taurtis a stuffed fish, exclaiming that he could be an homage to his beloved Mr. Fish. Taurtis was overjoyed, holding it tight in his arms.

Grian wasn't sure if Taurtis's grip on the plush was due to excitement, or the way that Coolment was staring at it hungrily.

He shrugged it off, deciding not to get involved.

Coolment had received some catnip along with some weed. Grian and Sam pitched in to get that one, with Sam procuring catnip from who-knows-where, and Grian getting some flower from the local dispensary.

Taurtis had given Coolment a sweater, which was his gift to everyone. Each person was gifted a sweater with the first letter of their name on the back, with Taurtis having his own matching one as well.

Sam had given Coolment and Grian each some coupons for whatever favors they decided to come up with, along with some promises of some “epic sex” that was also part of their gifts.

After saying this Sam had turned to Taurtis and winked, speaking about how Taurtis could join in even though he had another gift. Taurtis flushed red at that, mumbling something about how he ‘wouldn't mind.’

Coolment had given each of them a card containing a 20 dollar bill. Even though it wasn't much, he still flushed a light pink when everyone thanked him.

Their unwrapping didn't last long, finishing quickly. Taurtis then disappeared into his room, presumably to get some more sleep, as he was grumbling earlier about how he had to work in the morning tomorrow.

Coolment tossed out some excuses to Sam and Grian, before leaving the dorm to go gord-knows-where. He never would tell them where he went off to, but they didn't care enough yet to press him further.

Once Coolment had left, Sam turned to Grian, leaning in and whispering something in his ear.

Whatever it was made Grian's cheeks go bright red. He nodded, and the two of them disappeared into their room.
