If he knew it was going to be freezing he would’ve layered a bit more.
Tails let out a huff, seeing his breath exhale in the cold air. His lips chapped and dry, and his lungs annoyingly stinging from winter’s delivery of cold air. The heels of his boots dig into the snow, delivering a small crunch.
The fox kit’s blue eyes glance at the bright clothing store next to him, observing the clothes in the shop window tailored towards women. His two tails unintentionally brush against the snow, making him shudder and his appendages flick in irritability. His nose scrunched as he feels the bottom of his tails a little damp. Despite his older brother’s warnings, Tails threw on an old scarf and simple winter boots. His durable coat could only do so much to relieve winter’s harsh temperatures. If he stood out for any longer—
“Tails.”
Tails’ head whips around, his ears stood raised in expectancy. His blue eyes register his companion’s arrival, which makes him forget his frustration with the season.
“Kitsunami!” Tails’ voice practically goes up an octave. It makes the fennec’s soft features contort into a shy smile, lightly hidden due to the dark green scarf around his neck. He doesn’t think about how his muzzle grows warm, or that the other’s ivory muzzle had a subtle tint of pink.
Tails closes the distance, his gloved hands grasping onto Kitsunami’s mittens. Their warm breaths appearing in the frigid breeze.
“Are you ready for our sleepover?” Kitsunami’s pink eyes look up at Tails through his bangs. He’s unprepared, but he looked into the heroic sidekick’s cerulean eyes. It made him forget that his inexperience with certain customs, and it made his tummy get all sorts of butterflies. With this, Kitsunami nods.
Tails beamed with joy. “Okay-Okay! C’mon! We have the whole place to ourselves!” He was eager to show Kitsunami the fun practice. He tugs Kitsunami along with him earning a small gasp from the fennec.
Their shoes crunched against the snow as they made their way to the train station. Letting out giggles as they treaded on.
9:08pm, the clock read. Tails flickered on the workshop lights with ease. He took a greedy breath of warm air, his lungs finally getting a break. Kitsunami followed on after, his pink eyes registering the familiarity of his partner’s residence.
The bright lights, warm-wooded bookcases, the apricot-colored walls, the big pipes and half-finished inventions lying around.. not to mention the bright red bi-plane settled in front of the garage doors. The door closed behind them, and they were eager to get comfortable. Their shoes kicked off and their torn-off gloves resting on the top of a surprisingly clean work-table. Last time the fennec visited, Tails had blueprints and tools littered across the surface.
His attention was grabbed when his paw was grasped by Tails. Once again tugging him along in silence up the stairs. They waltzed into the main area, the kitchen lights on and the living room littered with blankets and pillows. Kitsunami observed the decently-sized Christmas tree fixed beside the hallway. Bright red and green lights strung upon the fake branches. Kitsunami’s nose twitched, smelling the fragrance of pine and rosemary.
He also took note of the many pictures strung up on the wall, harboring images of mainly Tails and his older brother; Sonic. His pink eyes darted toward the kitchen where Tails seemed to lead him. The feeling of their soft paw pads squished together made his head a little dizzy.
“I bought some hot chocolate bombs! So it’ll make the drink more chocolate-y.” Tails jabbered, letting go of Kitsunami. His socks padding on the hardwood floor, as he went behind the kitchen counter.
“Hot chocolate bombs?” Kitsunami’s voice conveyed his curiosity, his droopy fennec ears brushing against the marble surface. He observed as the fox boy opened the pantry, standing on his tip-toes to reach the shelf barely above his height.
“Yeah! They’re just chocolate balls with goodies inside of them.” The young hero explained, setting the small pack on the counter. He got a milk carton and two mugs, carefully pouring the liquid into it.
“Is this something you do with Sonic?” Kitsunami inquired, his mouth in the shape of a small ‘o’ on his snout. Tails let out a hum in confirmation, his blue eyes slightly squinted in joy. The milk was nicely warmed after popping it into the microwave. Tails promptly set the mugs on the kitchen counter after. The bag crinkled as Tails got two chocolate ‘bombs’, handing one to Kitsunami. Tails had a mint flavored one, for obvious reasons. Kitsunami held a regular, observing it in his palm.
“Now, we drop them in and let them melt!” Tails instructed as he gently dropped the chocolate orb into the warm milk; a light ‘plop!’ heard. Kitsunami dropped in his, his pink eyes fluttering underneath his bangs.
“Oh yeah! We’re also gonna watch a movie,” Tails started, swiftly turning off the kitchen light. His hands cupping his mug gingerly as he went onto the living room. His fluffy two namesakes bobbing along with his movements. “..that’s what all the blankets and pillows are for.” Kitsunami nodded at that, setting down his mug on the coffee table in front of the couch.
“I wish Sonic actually set it up nicely..” Tails grumbled a little, as his eyes narrowed at the messy sprawled out blankets. The fennec boy laughed a little,
“I-It’s not a problem, we can set it up how we like.” Kitsunami’s voice was small and shy, but he felt secure enough to joke lightly. Tails couldn’t help but silently appreciate how far his companion has come. A smile graced his white muzzle, “That’s true.. here, you set up the blankets while I pick out a movie!” His voice squeaked.
They got onto their tasks, which only took a few moments. Kitsunami had neatly set up the blankets and pillows, wanting to ensure their comfort. Tails’ paw clicked on the remote, searching around for an acceptable movie.
Kitsunami sat, shifting on the couch to find a position he’d deem as cozy enough. Flicking his limp fluffy tail beneath himself, curling it to his side. His paws gently reached for the warm mug, taking notice of the white milk now changed to a light brown. He took a small sip, savoring the warm chocolate-y drink on his tongue. Some milk getting on his top lip, which he licked the sweet liquid off. Kitsunami’s face flushed a little from the warm beverage— it was better than he thought it’d be.
“Okay! Got one!” Kitsunami’s head snapped up at Tails’ exclamation, his hands setting down his drink. The heroic sidekick soon plopped on the couch, letting out a small grunt. They looked at each other, holding back a few soft snickers. Tails propped himself up, kicking his legs beneath the covers, prompting Kitsunami follow suit.
Nicely tugging the warm fluffy blankets to their chests, their elbows bumped into each other. They both realized how close they were, their bodies side by side. Their thick contrasting coats brushing against each other. The warmth radiating from their bodies was felt, and it made Tails’ fur stand up a little on his neck. Tails’ muzzle flushed, and he swore Kitsunami’s snout went up in flames.
The fennec looks away, hiding his flushed face. His lips in a firm line, as his bangs lay shadows over his soft features. Tails rubs the back of his head coyly. They were both still so new to their feelings, both inexperienced in showing romantic affection. Scratch that— in general they sucked at showing romantic interest. Tails’ hand grabbed the remote, starting the movie to alleviate the tension.
Kitsunami’s ears twitched, looking up from his bashfulness. His legs shift a little underneath the soft duvet. He leans his body against the arm rest, but his movements are tense. Tails’s blue eyes are on the screen, and so is Kitsunami’s gaze.
For a while it was like that. Just staring at the screen, in silence. Occasionally, one of them taking a sip from their hot beverages. Tails felt a bit guilty— wanting to say something. Yet, his throat had a lump in it and he just couldn’t. He wondered if he crossed a boundary, he hoped he hadn’t made his partner uncomfortable. His brows creased, and his two furry tails curled beside his waist. Kitsunami could feel the fox’s apprehension, glimpsing at the boy’s expression. His long fennec ears skimmed lightly against his shoulders, making him squirm subtly from the atmosphere.
Despite Kitsunami’s regularly sheepish demeanor, he felt as if he wanted to initiate something. Tails had done so much for him, he was always doing something for him. From the moment they met, Tails was always first to reach out. Kitsunami’s nose exhaled an almost frustrated puff, and he decided to sit up a little.
He glanced at Tails, who seemed a bit too much ‘invested’ in the movie. He could see the illuminated reflection of the screen his cerulean eyes. In all honesty, Kitsunami had tuned out whatever audio the film was emitting. His thoughts were loud, muting the volume of the movie. He was anxious yet determined to at least make a ‘move’.. That’s what people call it— He thinks.
So, he tightened his grip on his clenched fists beneath the blanket. Feeling butterflies flutter in all sorts of directions in his stomach, he was jittery yet he was sure he could do it. Kitsunami turned his head fully to face the other fox, biting the inside of his cheek.
Slowly, and subtly, Kitsunami scooted closer to Tails. His fennec tail flicked underneath the covers, unintentionally brushing lightly against Tails’ own two. Tails’ ears perked up, turning his head to face his partner. Once again, Kitsunami’s face went terribly red. Both of their ivory snouts covered with a pink hue.
Yet, Tails gave a small lop-sided smile. It was welcoming, a silent invitation that Kitsunami would not refuse. The fennec moved himself to sit right beside the heroic sidekick, his bare paws partially gripping his knees. Although, his posture was a bit stiff. The sight of it made Tails giggle. A sheepish smile forming on the fennec’s snout.
Tails leaned against Kitsunami, his hand gently grasping his arm. His blue eyes looking up at his counterpart, and his ears were folded back in a timid manner. Kitsunami’s magenta eyes looked down at him, his hand moving to rest upon the side of Tails’ stomach. The movie wasn’t important anymore, their eyes had a bright glimmer from the TV’s light.
“C-Can we..” Kitsunami mumbled under his breath, his magenta eyes squinting subtly. He trailed off, as if afraid to utter any more words. Tails had propped himself more, now their muzzles were in front of each other. To say they were both nervous would be an understatement.
“..Are you sure? I-I don’t want to rush this.” Tails stammered out, his scratchy voice a whisper. He swallowed back some saliva, his cerulean eyes bright. Kitsunami let out a small breath, collecting himself. He nodded despite his heart practically racing in his chest. He could only hear the sound of the fox’s voice, and the loud ‘du-thump’ of his heartbeat.
“Ah-um.. Here, put your hand like this..?” Tails guided Kitsunami’s palm to his cheek. His voice uncertain, as if he was trying to test an invention and was unsure of its potential. Kitsunami felt the soft fur of Tails’ muzzle, the spiky yet easily moveable tufts of fur protruding from his cheek. He could feel each singular strand of fur gently squish against his paw pad.
Tails felt his throat tighten at the touch of the other sidekick, his cheeks hurt from blushing so much. It was now or never. His blue eyes glanced from the fennec’s lips to his eyes. He leaned his body, making Kitsunami flinch a little. But Kitsunami persisted after, leaning forward when his companion did. Their noses bumped so very gently, as if afraid the other would shatter at the slightest movement.
Kitsunami could feel Tails’ warm breath hit his muzzle. And he took the leap— Kitsunami pressed their muzzles together.
They were kissing .
Kissing , for the first time.
Their eyes fluttered shut upon touch, and the kiss made their bodies melt. The tension in their bodies was gone almost instantly. It was a soft kiss, simplistic and innocent. It was perfect.
They made no move to go further nor apart, taking in soft deep breaths from their noses. Letting their lips touch delicately for a simple 10 seconds. They pulled away together, transitioning their deep breaths to their mouths. Kitsunami’s fuchsia eyes glimmered as they stared into Tails’ deep blue hues.
“I think I have a bit of fur in my mouth.” Kitsunami mumbled, making Tails freeze.
“Phhhfftt—ahaha! That’s the first thing you say?” Tails chuckled, raising a hand to his mouth as if to hide his smile. His eyes closed, and his cheeks grew only more red. Kitsunami sheepishly looked away, but he wasn’t embarrassed. He let out a few laughs himself, of course that was after he pulled out some fur from his maw.
“S-Sorry.. You.. uh- are a good kisser?” Kitsunami stuttered, he was clueless what to say. He grinned as he did so, his soft features lit up in genuine happiness. He hadn’t felt so light in forever.
“Well.. I’m just happy you enjoyed it.. I hope.” Tails softly said, tilting his head. His ears folded back bashfully and his brows knitted. Kitsunami nodded his head, “Y-Yeah.. I did.”
Tails’ face softened. “That makes me happy, Kit.” His bare hands gently held Kitsunami’s, making the fennec’s ears slightly pin backwards. His head lowering in endearment, he was just so enamored with the yellow fox— and to know that he returned his affections made his heart soar.
Tails pulled Kitsunami for a hug, his arms wrapping around his back. Kitsunami’s arms flung over Tails’ shoulders in return, leaning his weight against him. Tails’ head rest against the arm rest, pulling the covers over them both. Kitsunami’s head resting on his chest, their eyes now on the movie despite missing half of the plot.
Sleepover successful.
