"YOOONGIIII-AHHHH!" Jin screamed from across the house. He was all ready to go for the fishing trip the two would be going on today. Something they had planned to do on a day off for months. They have had other days off, but still couldn't find the time to go fishing. They finally found the time. Hobi and Jimin had helped cook and load up a lunch tote full of snacks for the two to bring with them. Jin said they'd probably be gone a few hours, but no later than that. Jin and Yoongi needed to be home in time to make dinner, they didn't trust the others to do it.
Yoongi came out of the bathroom freshly showered, making his way to the fridge to grab a cold brew coffee, "A few more minutes. Are we bringing extra clothes?" Yoongi asked. He figured their clothes would get wet while they were out, so bringing some extra things wouldn't hurt.
"Sure, I can throw some extra shirts and sweats into our bag," Jin offered. Yoongi nodded in response as he took a sip of his beverage. Jungkook came into the kitchen pouting, he wanted to go fishing with them but was told it was 'hyungs day out' and he could go another time.
"It's because you don't like me, isn't it?" Jungkook playfully pouted.
Yoongi walked over and ruffled his maknae's hair, "Yes, that's exactly why." The two laughed. Namjoon and Taehyung also met everyone in the kitchen, " The weather says a storm is coming tonight. You'll be back before that though, right?" Taehyung asked. "The storm doesn't start until almost 6," Namjoon added in.
It was only noon, "Yes, we will only be out a few hours," Jin replied. Jungkook ran away and came back out with a throw blanket, "You should bring this too, in case it gets cold."
"It's 70 degrees out," Yoongi laughed.
"Well what if it gets cold out?!" Jungkook protested, "And remember to wear life jackets, with a whistle!" He was just as protective of his hyungs as they were of him. Jin grabbed the blanket and put it into their little travel bag too, "Yoongi-ah, are you ready now?" Yoongi nodded as he threw his drink container away. Jin quickly grabbed extra clothes and threw them in the bag before heading out. They all said goodbye to each other as the two oldest hyungs vanished out the door. The rest of the members went to begin doing their own leisure activities for the day.
They would be fishing at the ocean today, one of Jin's favorite spots. Due to the incoming weather, it wasn't as crowded as it usually was. People always claimed that a storm rolling in would mean less fish. Yet Jin saw it as their opportunity to catch more fish, considering there was less people. They were using a row boat, it was pretty big in size, bigger than most wooden row boats, and stayed in the water well considering the waves. The boat was also roped to the dock, so it couldn't float away. It was used more as a spot to sit and bob on top of the waves without disappearing into the ocean.
The two loaded their lunch tote and extra clothes into the boat.
"Why don't we just leave the clothes in the car? Hyung if I need to change, I'm not doing it on the boat," Yoongi smirked.
"Ahh Yoongi-ahh, live a little," Jin laughed. They joked about different newspaper headlines that would create. Before hopping in the boat themselves, they remembered to put their life jackets on. They weren't ones they were used to, but they fit and they worked, which was all they cared about.
The afternoon sailed by smoothly, Yoongi had rubbed it in Jin's face that he'd already caught two fish. They ate through half the snacks and drinks at this point. They weren't sure what time it was as they had left their phones in the car to make sure they didn't lose them in the water.
"Let's not be too much longer," Yoongi looked around and saw that the other people who were fishing all seemed to have headed out already. They were really beating the storm.
"It can't be any later than maybe 4, we have a while," Jin told Yoongi. The two sat there for a while longer fishing and talking about life, it was great quality time they were spending together. As much as they loved them, it was nice to spend time away from the younger members, especially their maknae line. They began to hear the rain falling onto the top of the ocean.
"I suppose that means it's time to go," Jin suggested. Yoongi nodded in agreement. Jin turned to grab the rope that was attached to both the boat and the dock, the trick was to pull themselves back to the dock. They both noticed they were extremely far from the dock, however.
"Hyung, how long is this rope anyway? I didn't know it let the boat go out this far," Yoongi asked. They were so far from the dock that it looked miniature sized in their eyesight.
"Now I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but, " Jin held up the rope, seeing it had somehow been torn or eaten through, "It doesn't go out this far. We aren't attached to the dock anymore.."
The two looked back and forth between each other and the shore. There was nobody at it. Their boat was bobbing in the ocean between the middle of a storm coming, and nobody to help them.
"What do we do?!" Yoongi panicked, "We don't have paddles! It's not like we can just paddle back!" Which would have been impossible at this point anyway, the waves were getting more violent and dragging them further and further from shore.
"Swim? We have life jackets on," Jin suggested. They both scanned the water. Swimming against the waves at this point would have been impossible. The rain and wind were picking up quickly. The two started screaming for help instead, hoping maybe someone was around they just couldn't see but would be able to hear them. They could barely hear themselves over the rain.
"Did you grab a whistle?" Jin asked Yoongi, realizing he had forgotten their maknae had reminded them to get whistles.
"No, I forgot.." Yoongi stared at Jin. "So did I.." Jin replied.
"Hyung!!" Yoongi screamed, "Jungkook reminded you!"
"He reminded you too, so where's yours, huh?!" Jin shot back. They both knew in this moment, this was probably one of the dumbest mistakes they had ever made. They should have brought Jungkook. They continued to scream towards shore, but it didn't seem like anyone was hearing them. To their disadvantage , shore was almost invisible at this point. Even if someone was there, they wouldn't hear them anymore. They both sat in the boat and used their arms to try frantically rowing, but that was no use either.
"This isn't working! We're headed for the middle of the damn ocean!" Yoongi screamed.
"I don't know what to do, Yoongi," Jin confessed. He realized there was no way out of this. They were indeed headed for the ocean. The two both sat back on the bottom of the boat and gripped the sides, and each other. The waves were getting bigger and more aggressive. Jin crawled to the end of the boat and pulled up the part of rope that was still attached to their boat and brought it to Yoongi, he began tying it around Yoongi's life jacket.
"What are you doing?" The rapper asked.
"Incase you fall out, you'll be attached to this so I won't lose you."
"But what if you fall out?"
" I don't care if I fall out. I don't want you falling out."
"I don't want you falling out either, hyung." Yoongi shot him a concerned look. The rapper was never expressive with his emotions, so it was heartbreaking for Jin to look at Yoongi and for the first time ever be able to tell he was really scared. He sat down next to Yoongi and linked arms with him, while also grabbing onto the boat, "Now I can't," he said reassuringly.
"Hyung.." Yoongi started, he looked around and couldn't see shore anymore. It was just them and the open ocean and a giant storm that was only getting worse, "This is a really stupid way to die."
"We aren't going to die," Jin said with slight anger in his voice, "Now I don't want to hear those words."
"Well I don't see how we are supposed to live through this unless someone pops out of the middle of the damn ocean or falls from the sky to save us!" Yoongi yelled at his hyung. He was terrified, and didn't mean to take his fear out on his hyung, but he couldn't help it.
"Yoongi-ah," Jin started rubbing his arm, "Hyung isn't going to let you die." The two looked at each other and Jin spoke again, "Someone will come, okay? We have to believe someone will come. Especially when we don't make it home. Our boys know where we are. They'll send people to find us." Yoongi silently nodded in agreement, he knew that much was true. Their members would most likely call the police knowing they didn't make it back. How long that would take, however, he did not know.
It had gotten extremely dark out, the winds were raging and so were the waves. Jin and Yoongi were clinging to the sides of the boat for dear life, as the waves were moving it around so violently it would have sent them both flying out if they had let go.
"Lay down," Jin commanded Yoongi, "I think it's safer if we lay down." The two lay back onto the bottom of the boat and held hands while still clinging to the sides of the boat. They looked to the other end of the boat to see their lunch tote had already flown away, but the spare bag of clothes had been tied down nicely so it was still strapped to the boat. They would have preferred it be the other way around, though.
Nighttime had fallen over them, and the storm was letting up. The waves weren't as violent and the rain had stopped, but now they were dealing with thunder and lightning. If lightning struck the water, or them, they knew that'd be the end of it. Jin hugged Yoongi tightly and they stayed laying like that. They were both extremely nervous and needed each others comfort.
"You know, I'll get to tell the members you were finally down to cuddle," Jin laughed. Yoongi gave him a playful smack, "Shut up."
"I guess it's a good thing Jungkook didn't come. It's scary enough having to worry about one of you," Jin admitted, "Do you think they're okay? We aren't home to make dinner."
"They've definitely all starved to death by now," Yoongi laughed, although he was actually a little worried about them. Not because of dinner, but because he knew at this point they had probably already began to panic and were trying to look for them. He didn't like it when any of them were scared, even if he was the one in the bad situation. He did hope they were all okay. He also hoped him and Jin would be okay.
Thankfully, the thunder and lightning had stopped. The waves were calm. The two felt like they could relax, at least physically. They lay on the boat and looked at the sky, it was amazing seeing the stars so clearly after the storm clouds rolled away, something they had never seen.
It was silent for a while before Jin turned his head to Yoongi, "What?" Yoongi asked.
"Thank you," Jin said.
"For what?" Yoongi asked confused.
"Coming with me. I mean I definitely didn't want this happening to me or you, but I'm glad I'm at least not alone."
"Me too," Yoongi replied. Jin kept staring at Yoongi while Yoongi kept looking at the sky. If he was being honest with himself, he didn't know if they were going to make it or not. Yes, his members would call people to search, but would those people ever actually find them? He didn't even know how far from shore they were. They could be half way across the ocean by now, how far would people go before eventually giving up and calling it quits? A silent tear fell from his eye before he noticed Yoongi was starting to shiver. He just now became aware of how cold it had gotten. He scooted closer and wrapped his arm around his dongsaeng, they still had their life jackets on so it was a bit awkward, but Jin didn't care.
"Do you want the blanket? It's in the bag, which we by some miracle still have," Jin offered.
"No, it's okay. I'm not that cold," Yoongi replied. He honestly wasn't that cold, his shivering was more fear based. The two continued to lay in silence for a while, both wondering if any form of rescue was on it's way or not. They were tired, but didn't want to fall asleep incase a boat or someone went by. Yoongi had sat up to stretch, then realized the air was actually getting a lot colder. He got up to slowly make his way to the bag with the blanket in it.
"Be careful," Jin gestured. Yoongi nodded. He wasn't as careful as he thought. While he was up, a giant wave came out of nowhere, tipping the boat to the side violently.
"Ahhh! Hyung!" Yoongi screamed as he fell out into the water.
"Yoongi!!" Jin screamed. He sat up and made his way to the side of the boat. The water must have been well below freezing, because Yoongi couldn't even get words out. He couldn't move. Jin grabbed the rope had had attached to Yoongi's life vest earlier and pulled him in quickly, "It's okay. It's okay. I've got you," he reassured. He grabbed the top of Yoongi's life vest and hoisted him back up, laying him down. Yoongi was violently shivering from head to toe. He had gone under when he fell out so every inch of him was drenched in what seemed like sub zero temperatures. Jin became frantic, he knew this was extremely bad.
He quickly undid Yoongi's life vest and pulled it off of him, "I know you're freezing but hyung is going to help you. We have to change your clothes," Jin started pulling Yoongi's shirt off, he knew Yoongi would scream at him later for this, but right now he cared about saving his life. He knew how to slow hypothermia, and getting out of the freezing clothes was part of it. He grabbed the extra clothes from the bag and brought them to Yoongi, quickly putting a new dry shirt on him and then new sweatpants. Yoongi still wouldn't stop shaking. Jin took his own life vest off and pulled the blanket over them, hugging Yoongi as tightly as possible trying to share his body heat so he would warm up.
"You're okay, you're okay. You'll be fine. Hyung promises. Can you speak?" Jin asked frantically. Yoongi hadn't been able to get a word out since falling into the freezing water. He still couldn't talk. Jin took his hands and cupped Yoongi's cheeks, trying to warm his face up.
"I told you to be careful!" Jin scolded. He was terrified. He could not lose Yoongi. Yoongi was just as terrified. He didn't know it was humanly possible to be this cold. Although he knew usually people who experienced it, died. Which scared him more. If he wasn't going to die before, he thought he was going to now. Jin was making him a little more warm, but he couldn't stop his body from shivering. He didn't understand why he couldn't speak. He was so cold it was impossible to do so. Tears came out of his eyes, they became his only form of communication as he tried sucking in air. The cold had made it hard to breathe.
" No no no, please don't cry," Jin asked, "You'll be fine. I promise. And when has hyung ever broken a promise? Never, right?" Jin hugged him tighter and placed his cheek against Yoongi's. Jin started crying, "Hyung doesn't want to see you cry." Yoongi buried his face into Jin's neck and could finally vocally let out a whimper. His entire body hurt. It felt frozen but on fire at the exact same time. Every breath he took felt like he was breathing in icicles, it made it so hard and painful to breathe. He had to take quick, shallow breaths and the hyperventilating was making everything hurt even more.
"H...h...hyung.." he whispered. Jin looked at him, " Yeah yeah yeah, I'm right here," Jin cooed.
"If...if..if.." he started. His shivering made it hard to form words as it rattled his aching lungs around in his rib cage, "I..I.. die.." his teeth were chattering violently too.
"I told you I didn't want to hear those words. Hyung will not let you die," Jin stared at Yoongi and even in the darkness could tell how pale he had turned. Hyung will not let you die.
"If..I die.." he started again," Where..where...do you...th-think...I'll go?" Yoongi asked. Death had never crossed Yoongi's mind much, at least not until now. He never quite considered what would happen to him after his time on earth was up, if anything were to happen at all.
Jin started running his hands through Yoongi's hair, some strands had turned into actual icicles, "You aren't going anywhere. You're staying right here," Jin couldn't stop his own tears.
"M...m...maybe...up there?" Yoongi looked up to the sky. It seemed like a nice place to go. "In...i-i-n....the stars, hyung?"
Jin began to sob and took Yoongi's cheeks in his hands again, "Stop it! Stop! You're not going anywhere! Not into the sky, not into the stars, nowhere! You're staying right here with hyungie! Do you understand me?!" Jin frantically started rubbing Yoongi's arms and chest, trying to make him warmer more quickly. He knew his dongsaeng wasn't really listening to anything he was saying to him, but maybe if he was warmer he'd stop all this death talk. When rubbing Yoongi's chest he noticed his breathing was way too slow and shallow.
"Can you try to take deeper breaths please?" Jin begged. He knew Yoongi wasn't sucking in enough oxygen.
Yoongi tried but let out a painful cry instead, then shook his head no, "It...h..h..hurts."
"Keep trying for hyung," He hated seeing Yoongi in pain but needed him to breathe better.
"H....hyung.." Yoongi started, it sounded like his voice was giving out through his chattering teeth, "I'm ...c..cold," he shivered.
"I know. I'm trying to help you," Jin cried. Jin didn't know what else to do. He was doing everything he could to help but there was only so much he could do being stranded on a tiny boat in the middle of the ocean. Yoongi's eyes started to aimlessly wander around, "Maybe...the..o..ocean?"
"What?" Jin asked confused. Now Yoongi wasn't even making sense.
"O..ocean...hyung.."
"I don't understand."
"If I ..die...maybe I'll go ...in..in the ocean...and....and....you can..come catch me," Yoongi paused. Jin stared at him in silence, he knew Yoongi wasn't done talking. More tears spilled out of Yoongi's eyes, "and..and...bring me home."
Jin's heart was too broken to reply. He held Yoongi's face to his chest as he cuddled him and sobbed.
"Pro..promise..." Yoongi started, "You'll..you'll...bring me ...home?"
"I promise," Jin whispered through his tears. Jin felt Yoongi's body go limp. He took his face in his hands, "Hey no no no . Wake up!" Jin screamed. He started to shake Yoongi, "Please you have to wake up! It's not time for sleeping!" Jin cried. He felt Yoongi's wrist to look for a pulse, he had a very weak one. Jin realized in a matter of time, it would give out. He finally admitted his biggest fear to himself, Yoongi was dying.
"Help!" Jin screamed out into the vast ocean, "Someone help!" He could see nobody was there, but he screamed anyway. Maybe the damn stars would save his dongsaeng or something.
"Please! Somebody, anybody! Please help!" He continued screaming until his tears became too heavy and his voice finally gave out. He turned back to Yoongi and shook him more, "You can't do this! You'll be okay! I need you, Yoongi! You're my second in command, and the members second biggest brother, we all need you!" Through his tears he looked up and saw lights. So many lights. A complete invasion of lights. He wondered if maybe he had just died and was flying through the stars or something. As the lights got closer he quickly realized it wasn't stars surrounding him, it was boats. A multitude of rescue boats. Search lights on all of them were flying across the water. Jin started to frantically wave his arms in the air and scream, "Here! Right here! Over here!" He turned back to Yoongi and screamed, "We're saved! Yoongi-ah you have to wake up now! We're saved!" He kept flailing his arms into the air. Search lights landed on them and they began honking. The boats made their way closer. Once Jin knew they had seen him, he was shaking Yoongi again, "Hey, you have to get up now. It's time to go."
Yoongi wasn't moving, and he seemed even colder than before.
"Yoongi?" Jin was afraid to check for a pulse again, but he needed reassurance that Yoongi still had one.
However, he didnt.
"NO!!" Jin wailed. He stood up in the boat, "HELP! HELP! HE ISN'T BREATHING! HELP!!" He became extremely impatient and got down and began giving Yoongi CPR. The boats quickly pulled up, and a rescue team was quickly at their side, "He isn't breathing!!" Jin screamed. They quickly took Yoongi and took over CPR while also helping Jin into the boat. They asked Jin a million questions but he was too focused on what was happening to Yoongi to answer anything. The paramedics on the boat were quickly able to get his dongseangs pulse back.
"He's hypothermic! He's hypothermic!" Jin screamed, " He fell into the water!" The paramedics began doing procedural things to help Yoongi's body temperature.
When the rescue boats had finally gotten back to shore, they rushed Yoongi to an ambulance and took him away. Jin got off the boat and all of his members ran to him crying, hugging him, "Thank God they found you!!! What happened?!?! What happened to Yoongi?!?!" They all cried. Jin cried with them.
"The ..the boat...the rope..broke..and the storm..and we couldn't get back," Jin had completely broken down, "And...Yoongi..he fell into the water...freezing..I'm sorry.."
Everyone hugged him tightly, "It's not your fault, hyungie," Taehyung cried. Hobi and Jimin turned to another paramedic and asked about Yoongi, the paramedic said he was alive and breathing, but was still in critical condition. Hobi had driven everyone to the dock, and offered to drive everyone to the hospital. They made their way.
At the hospital, there were little updates. The members were frantic, needing more updates that their other hyung was okay. They sat around in a waiting room clinging to each other and crying. A doctor came in and gave them good news, that Yoongi would be fine and he was awake. They ran to his room. Jungkook and Taehyung both jumped right into his bed with him. Him and Jin made eye contact and held it for a moment, before both of them began crying. Jin ran over and wrapped Yoongi up in his arms, "I told you hyung wouldn't let you die," he whispered through his tears into Yoongi's ear. Yoongi wrapped his arms back around Jin, and the others all let out coos of "Aww's " and "Ooo's." Yoongi blushed.
"Hyungie, are you okay?" Jungkook pouted. Yoongi nodded, "I'm okay." Jin's heart did a flip in his chest. It was music to his hears hearing Yoongi speak. And full words. He thought he might have never heard his voice again. They continued to talk and Jin and Yoongi told the story of what happened. Jin added in some fairytale sequences of them having to fight off pirates. Yoongi rolled his eyes and laughed.
"Hyung," he said to Jin, "Can we hold off on fishing trips for a while?"
"You never have to come with me again," Jin chuckled.
"Hyungs," Namjoon started, "When we get home....can you guys still make dinner?" Hobi started laughing so hard he threw himself onto the floor. All the members were laughing.
After the laughter, the conversation took a more of a serious tone as the members started telling Yoongi and Jin how glad they were they were okay. They also had to reiterate to Jin that everything that happened was not his fault.
Jungkook crossed his arms, "So since you guys forget your damn whistles, that only means one thing." Everyone stared at the maknae.
"I get to come next time, so you two won't forget anything. I like adventures too, you know," He smiled. Yoongi took his pillow and playfully threw it at Jungkook.
"You guys want to know the best part of this whole thing?" Jin started. Everyone looked at him.
"Yoongi changed his mind about being a stone in his next life.
When he dies..
He wants to be a fish. And live in our house."
