Chapter 2: Just what I have

Started this a while back, but almost immediately got distracted... so this is just what I've been sitting on for a while now. Short, but hopefully entertaining read.
Chapter Text
Curse Of The Seventh Soul
A large ship sails slowly through the fog. A goat monster stands at the front, quietly singing to himself, repeating a song he’d heard about pirates some time ago. A skeleton makes his way behind him and puts a hand on his shoulder, causing him to stop singing. “hey bud. cursed pirates sail these waters. try not singing about them, lest you jinx us.”
A yellow scaled monster wearing glasses walks up behind the pair, a second, bigger goat monster behind her. “Mr. Sans, that will do,” she says.
Sans shrugs. “he was singing about pirates. bad luck to sing about them in this fog, don’tcha think?”
She shakes her head slightly. “Your concerns have been noted. Now, be on your way.”
“aye lieutenant.” Sans eyes the boy nervously before walking away. He mutters “don’t like the idea of bringing children along. not like they do much.” Sans reaches into his coat pocket and pulls out a bottle of ketchup which he takes a swig from.
The goat kid shrugs. “I think it would be cool to meet a pirate.”
The lieutenant straightens her glasses and smiles at him, bemused. “Think again Mister Dreemur. Those lot are all vile and dissolute.” She walks over next to him, looking out in front of the boat. “I intend to see any human or monster who sails under a pirate flag or wears their brand get what they deserve.” She chuckles to herself. “A short drop and a sudden stop.”
The goat kid looks confused. He looks over at Sans who pulls a rope over to himself with magic. He makes a nuse and pretends to hang himself, much to the boy's horror.
The taller goat monster walks over next to the lieutenant. “Uh, Lieutenant Alphys, I appreciate your fervor, but concerned about the effect this subject will have upon my son.”
Alphys nods. “My apologies, Governor Asgore.” She walks off.
The goat kid stands next to his father. “Actually, I think it’s interesting.”
Asgore shakes his head. “I’m aware, Asriel. That’s what concerns me.” With a sigh and a pat on his son’s back, he walks off.
Asriel looks over the edge of the boat. He notices something floating in the distance. He squints his eyes and sees a barrel in the water. Further up, he sees floating planks of wood with a… is that a human child? He points over the edge and turns back, yelling “There’s someone in the water!”
A bunch of people, including Alphys, Sans, and his father rush to the edge, seeing the person floating on the planks. Alphys calls out to the crew “We’ve got a person overboard! Get them up quickly!” The crew of humans and monsters rush about, grabbing ropes and hooks, pulling the floating planks in close. When the child gets close enough, Sans leans over the side, holding the rope later with one hand. His eyes flair with magic as he moves his other hand towards the child in the water. A blue glow surrounds them. He carefully moves his hand upwards, lifting the child with magic.
Monsters and humans make room as Sans sets them down on the deck. As soon as he releases them, a few people rush to check the child’s health, some using healing magic. Sans looks over the water, trying to spot anyone else. He looks up… and sees the burning ship. His eyes widen as he looks at the sight, muttering “stars above…”
The rest of the crew begin to notice, many looking at the scene in horror. Asgore covers his mouth with his big hands. “What could have happened?”
Alphys looks over the scene, holding her glasses as she stares at it, emotionless. “If I had to guess, their powder caught alight. Merchant vessels run heavily armed.”
Sans chuckles. “lotta good that did them.” A few crew members give him dirty looks. He just shrugs. “you were thinking it too, i’m just the one who said it.” Sans’ expression turns serious, the light fading from his eyes. “pirates.”
Alphys moves away, ordering the crew to prepare themselves and send out a boat to look for survivors. Asgore walks over to Asriel. “Asriel, I want you to accompany the child. They’ll be in your change. Take care of them.”
Asriel nods. “Yes father.” He rushes after the crew member who was carrying them away. Asgore smiles at his son for a second before looking back at the fire and frowning, face filled with concern.
As soon as the child is set down, Asriel gets a good look at them. They are thin, hair short, and their cheeks have pinkish circles. It’s hard for him to tell but Asriel thinks they may be a girl. He carefully reaches over to use healing magic on them.
Suddenly, they jolt upwards, smacking his hand away with a sharp intake of breath. They look around fearfully and Asriel gets a good look at their face. He isn’t sure why but he got the distinct impression they are a girl. Asriel puts his hands up and calmly says “It’s okay,” as they hyperventilate. He gestures to himself. “My name is Asriel Dreemur.”
She gulps and looks him over. She struggles to speak. “Ch-Chara Inname.”
Asriel offers her a paw. She takes it, calming her breath. “I’m watching over you Chara.” Her breath slows, eyes drooping. She lays back against the ground and passes out.
Asriel sighs and looks her over again. He sees something shiny in her pocket and carefully removes it. It’s a heart shaped locket made of solid gold. On the outside, there is a pirate insignia. Asriel’s eyes widen and he looks at her in shock. He whispers to himself “You’re a pirate!”
“Have they said anything?” Alphys asks her, walking up from behind with two humans in tow.
Asriel quickly stands, hiding the gold behind himself as he turns to look at Alphys. “Her name is Chara Inname. That’s all she said before she passed out.”
Alphys sighs and turns to the humans standing behind her. “Take her below.” She walks off, leaving Asriel alone as the humans remove Chara. He walks to the back of the deck and looks outwards. He checks around him, making sure no one is watching, and inspects the locket he found. He pops it open and sees a few words carved into it.
Don’t Forget .
Asriel closes the locket and looks out to sea. He notices something and squints. In the distance, he spots a ship flying black flags. At the very top, waves a skull with a red heart in its open mouth.
…
Asriel wakes from his dream. Or memory, as the case may be. He looks around the dark room, his eyes letting him see in the faint light easily. He sits up and crawls out of bed silently, going over to a nearby dressing table. He opens one of the compartments and empties it, accessing the hidden item underneath. He reaches in and pulls out the locket he had found on Chara all those years ago.
He stares at it for a moment, thinking about what to do with it. He shrugs and puts it around his neck, checking himself in the mirror.
A sudden knock at his door causes him to jump. He quickly rushes to hide the necklace under his fur and clothing as his father calls out “Asriel? Asriel, are you awake yet?”
Asriel checks to make sure the necklace is hidden before calling out “Yes father, I’m awake. Come in!”
Asgore opens the door and makes way as many maids and butlers come in to prepare the room. One opens the curtains, allowing the line to shine in, illuminating the room. Asgore smiles
