Chapter Text

That letter, those words that chilled him to the bone. They weren’t the gentle and carefully chosen words that the prince was normally addressed with. No, these were simple and cold words telling Tang Xuan he had to act as a general on the frontlines against Ànyǐng.

。。。。。。。。。

“You can’t go!” Tang Yun yelped and broke his chopsticks on the table, clearly concerned at the thought of his slightly elder brother being endangered.
“It’s not like I have a choice.” Xuan used his chopstick to anxiously poke at his Duck. That clearly wasn’t enough to appease his twin who continued to pout “Yun, you know I’d much prefer to stay here with you but I can’t disobey The Grand Duchess.” He sighed.
That wasn’t an excuse either, Grand Duchess Raven was quite frightening and famously strict. It didn’t matter to her if you were even just one rank below her, you’d still get disciplined. Tang Xuan was a prince so above him were: The King, The Grand Duchess, The ArchDuchess and then The dukes and duchesses, so obviously Madame Raven would have no objections to punishing Xuan.

Still Yun seemed soured by the news, bitterly staring out of the nearest window. Meanwhile his brother wistfully smiled and continued to unenthusiastically eat his duck. Yun loudly sighed at the sight.
“I just- why does it have to be you? Can’t you ask Mistress Raven to send someone else instead?” The navy haired man muttered as he stared at Xuan.
“First of all: It would make us seem cowardly, Secondly:I like having a head and I think the Grand Duchess would object to me having that if I rejected-“
“That fucking bitch.” He whispered.
“Yun!” Xuan yelped “You Can’t-“
“Shut your mouth.” Yun shushed the man before stuffing some food angrily into his own mouth while staring dully at his twin.

。。。。。。。。。

Tang Xuan stared at his uniform. The pure white of his trousers, his high black boots and his bright scarlet jacket. A beautiful uniform for an ugly thing. He wasn’t excited in any way, he wouldn’t say he was too frightened either. He felt numb. While he had read all the military texts, he never longed for the tumult of war. He was one of the few Region Princes who didn’t involve himself in war, only the alias using Prince Q of Qīngchūn and Princess Heng Yue of Měilì were also disengaged with violence. The Qīngchūn Prince was too young and The Princess was more interested in fashion. Speaking of Princess Yue, she was hardly pleased.

【”I can’t believe you’re being forced to-“
“Princess Yue. I really don’t mind.”
“You’re the only prince who isn’t obsessed with war and violence.”
“What about Prince Q-“
“He is a literal child, you’re the only prince I can talk to.”
“I’ll write letters.”
“Alright……. Thank you darling.” 】

“This is really happening isn’t it?” Yun lugubriously muttered from the door.
“Yes. It is.” Xuan sighed, forlorn.
“It’s so unfair. You’ve always been a ‘cultured, charming and young man’-“
“Stop quoting General Bai-“
“Let me finish. You’re that, not a war general. Aren’t you?”
“Yes. Of course I am-“
“So say no!-“ Yun fervently suggested
“I can’t!” Xuan loudly yelled, dropping his uniform on the floor of his bedroom.
Yun fearfully stared at his elder twin who was heavily breathing from his outburst.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry. I just… can’t.” Xuan apologised under his breath.
“It’s fine. I’m scared, are you scared?” Yun walked closer and picked up the red general uniform from the floor.
“I’m-I don’t think I’m scared. I’m just not happy. I just……don’t want to fight.” He took his clothes from his brother and placed them on his sunshine yellow chair.
“I …… don’t want you to fight either. I can’t lose you. I don’t really care who wins just as long as this ends and you don’t die.” Yun gasped as Xuan pulled him into a hug.
“I won’t.” The red head smiled before He winked “probably-“
“Shut up.”

。。。。。。。。。

Tang Xuan felt that this horse ride might be one of the worst memories from his strange new General arch. It had gone on for nearly two days and while he was still riding his horse with his usual elegance and ‘grandiloquence’ he was in a lot of pain. His back,His ass and his legs all felt like they were on fire and being stabbed by two thousand three hundred and seventy two pins. He nearly cried at the thought of how his precious horse felt right now. Gods he would never be able to fight if he felt so much sympathy for a horse, he really would have to work on that. Add that to the growing list of qualities he’d need to abandon, it was a painfully long list by now.

“General Tang. We’re thinking of stopping here to rest for a moment, any objections?” Sergeant Drew’s smooth voice rang out from his left. Xuan hummed In response and shook his head. He smiled at his soldiers who seemed extremely hesitant to return it. Their strange expressions were starting to make Tang Xuan uncomfortable so he simply dismounted before gracefully and almost silently landing on the ground. That action loosened his hairband and forced him to complete the lengthy process of fixing his crimson hair.

The sergeant watched him with interest at the dexterous work his fingers were doing, This Prince didn’t seem particularly psychically strong unlike Princess Xiao or Prince and Chuan who had both been his general, but he seemed capable if a little unaware of how the army’s authority system. Was that really a problem though? Could it be good? Xiao had respected her soldiers in a way, Chuan had been a little more distant beside with that one soldier who he’d trained for a couple years, but Tang Xuan was warm and friendly. Drew just hoped that The Prince could keep a proper hold on his authority.

Notes:

I did want this to be longer but I’m gonna save the last bit of the journey for the next chapter.
