Chapter Text
The Jeep's engine roared in the dim light of the parking lot, a harsh sound that broke the silence of a night that felt far too big, far too empty.
Evan—because at that moment he was still Evan, the boy fleeing a home that had never wanted him—looked at the passenger seat. It was deserted. There was no trace of his sister, only a crumpled letter, the car keys, and the echo of a farewell that had torn his chest in two. Maddie had stayed behind. She had let him go alone, trapped in the clutches of a monster he hadn't been able to defeat.
With hands trembling on the steering wheel, he shifted into first and accelerated. He drove for hours without knowing exactly where to go, devouring miles of asphalt as the lights of Pennsylvania faded in his rearview mirror. The pain of separation was a suffocating knot in his throat. He was alone. Completely alone in the world.
Or at least, that's what he thought.
It was in the middle of the night, during a forced stop at some forgotten gas station in the middle of nowhere, that reality changed.
As he drove down the road, he looked into the Jeep's rearview mirror and watched him sleep peacefully. At that instant, something shifted inside him. The dull ache of betrayal and abandonment by his own family transformed into absolute clarity. He understood that he would do anything to protect him and that he would give everything in his power to see him happy.
That very night, under a sky covered in stars, he stayed awake inside the Jeep, contemplating the immensity of the darkness. As silence enveloped him, he made a promise that he kept deep in his heart: to give him everything he had never had, regardless of the sacrifices, the obstacles, or what he would have to face to fulfill it.
And, for the first time in a long time, Buck felt he had found a purpose to keep going.
Los Angeles was still thousands of miles away, and Station 118 didn't even exist on his horizon. He didn't know he would become a firefighter, nor that he would find a new family. But as he looked at the map and then at the rearview mirror, Evan Buckley stopped being a boy running away from his past.
Now he was a man with a mission. And destiny, whatever it might be, would just have to make way for the two of them.
