“It’s not as difficult as it seems,” Florina said, climbing onto her pegasus.
“You’ve been doing it your whole life,” Lyn retorted. She’d rode horses for as long as she could remember, but they had the decency to stay on the ground. If they bucked, you wouldn’t be sent into freefall.
Florina held out a hand. Lyn eyed it warily. Then Florina smiled at her, and she relented. Tentatively, she got onto the pegasus. The beast’s wings flared, and it stood. Lyn tried to keep calm, but her grip on Florina’s shoulders tightened. If this was how she died—
Florina flicked the reins. The pegasus took off.
Lyn’s stomach lurched. She yelped, and Florina laughed. Her purple hair streamed out behind her. She looked so comfortable in the sky, like she wasn’t risking plummeting to her death.
Lyn looked down. The hills of Sacae tumbled out below her. Swaths of yellow-green, cut through by rivers — it looked like something out of a painting.
Florina turned to face her. “Pretty, isn’t it?”
“It is. I see why you like this so much.”
“My favorite part is riding fast.”
“Please don’t.”
She snorted. “Don’t worry. I won’t do that to you. Just enjoy the view, alright?”
Florina had a grin like lightning. The clear air gave her a wild confidence she lacked on land. For all flying terrified Lyn, it was worth it to see Florina’s eyes sparkle like that.
She squeezed Florina’s shoulder, then looked down over the plains. “I will.”
