Work Text:

November 3, 1980 (6:00 am)

Remus woke up to fluffy black hair tickling his face. It smelt of leather and cigarettes, slowly lifting his head he tried untangling himself from Sirius without waking him, he couldn’t help but smile; it was his birthday. It was not only just a random birthday but his 21st. Many people consider this age to be when you finally mature. However, Remus knew that Sirius grew up too quickly and always was the mature one. This wouldn’t stop him from giving Sirius the best party ever. Where Sirius could forget about his responsibilities and be a teenager again; the true party animal he was.

Remus looked at the clock realizing a couple of minutes had passed as he was admiring Sirius' sleeping frame. Slipping from beneath the covers he planted his bare feet against the cool tile. Pulling his arms above his head he stretched his back knowing this was one of the last times he would relax for the day. He padded into the kitchen, pulling a bandana over his hair to keep it out of his face as he made Sirius’ birthday breakfast. His favorite breakfast was fruitloops so Remus decided on making a fruitloop marshmallow square all for him. It was gonna be easy….

November 3, 1980 (7:30 am)

It was not easy. Sirius stumbled out of their bedroom half asleep to see Remus covered head to toe in melted marshmallow with fruit loops stuck to his forearms. He burst into laughter immediately. The kind of laughter that’s infectious. Until they were both bent over with tears spilling out of their eyes.

“Surprise,” Remus said face warming from embarrassment. “It was supposed to be breakfast in bed but I didn’t realize how bloody hard this would be,” he said with a frown.

Sirius stepped closer, a soft smile on his face. “This is even better,” he replied nipping Remus’ ear. Sirius took a step back admiring the flush on his cheeks that wasn't that bright before. He walked over to the kettle adding fresh water into it. “Do you want a cuppa? I'm making one for myself.”

“Please,” Remus says focusing back on the marshmallow squares. He gives up immediately and decides they will eat it together in the ball form it's in.

When the tea is finished brewing they both sit down on the couch facing each other and eat the marshmallow ball together reminiscing past birthdays.

Remus planned for James to take Sirius out for the day so he could get the apartment up for the party. First things first alcohol. He needed to buy the ingredients for Sirius’ drink which consisted of vodka and blue koolaid. Whiskey for himself, wine for Lily, and everyone else would drink coolers. Taking the elevator down to the parking lot he made a mental list of things he needed. When he finally reached his car he got in, while he waited for it to warm up he turned up the radio. “Lady Stardust” was playing by the one and only Bowie.

“The boy in the bright blue jeans
Jumped up on the stage
And lady stardust sang his songs
Of darkness and disgrace”

It really was Sirius’ day he thought to himself. Once the car was warm enough he pulled out and headed towards the shops. His first stop was the liquor store which went smoothly except they were out of the wine Lily liked but she would have to make do. The next stop was the grocery store. He grabbed five packs of balloons because Sirius deserved each one, hamburgers, buns, some dark chocolate (for himself), Kool-Aid, and condoms. You can never be too prepared.

When he had everything from his list he headed home where the bare apartment waited.

They finally finished decorating an hour before everyone was supposed to get there. Lily of course came early to help set up with Remus which was greatly appreciated. The apartment looked like an explosion of confetti. Balloons of different colors were floating everywhere. A huge 21 banner hung from the wall and streamers were hanging from the back of chairs and railings. It looked like a headache, Sirius would love it.

November 3, 1980 (7:45 pm)

The guests began trickling in holding gifts, alcohol, and thank god food. The chatter slowly grew and grew as the guests waited for Sirius and James to return. Remus heard the elevator faintly which signalled Sirius and James had arrived.

“HIDE!” Remus yelled, running to turn the lights off. People dove behind furniture and walls as quickly as they could. They waited in silence until they heard footsteps coming down the hall. They stopped right in front of the door. Everyone held their breath. The door opened and Sirius flicked on the lights.

“SURPRISE!!!!!” Everyone shouted, jumping up. Sirius startled backing up a step into James. Slowly, a grin spreads across his face as he scans the room. He makes eye contact with Remus and charges. He jumps wrapping his arms around Remus’ neck. Remus catches him holding him up off the floor and spins him in a circle.

“Happy birthday love,” Remus whispers smiling against Sirius’ hair.

November 4, 1980 (2:00 am)

When the last of the guests leave Remus and Sirius collapse onto the couch hand in hand.

“I love you moony,” Sirius says softly pulling their hands up to his mouth and kisses Remus’ knuckles.
“I love you more pads,” he replies kissing the crown of Sirius’ head. “Time for bed?” Sirius just smirks causing Remus to lift his eyebrow.

“I have a better idea,” he says winking before straddling Remus and kissing him.
