Chapter 1: I Wish You Were My Big Brother

Chapter Text

It has been several months since the tragedy’s flame has been snuffed out, leaving nothing but fading smoke. The world was still in a massive state of disrepair, but the future foundation is working on bringing it back to glory. There is currently at least 1 future foundation branch in every continent except antarctica. Things are really starting to turn around.

Today is a special day. Maybe not for everyone, but at least for one little girl.

“Happy birthday Monaca!” A low voice hummed in the dark warehouse.

Monaca has been sleeping up until those words were spoken. When she opened her tired eyes she was greeted by a slim figure, adorned with noticeable white, and thinning hair before her.

It was Nagito. The Nagito she hadn’t seen for months. The Nagito that she abandoned. Or did he abandon her? At this point, it was hard to tell. She just barely returned to earth less than a month ago. She was less than thrilled to see him, but what did it matter. Her life was practically over.

“Yes, Monaca is aware that it is April 1st. The day of jokes…” She grumbled out in a slightly annoyed, and uninterested voice. She couldn’t help but feel a little resentful. She wanted to convince herself that nobody ever mattered to her; especially not him. But deep down she knew that he was one of the only people in the world that cared about her. Even if it were for a selfish reason. And she hated to admit it, but she cared about him too. Only just a little bit, but it was nice to have a mutual connection.

“How does it feel to be a big twelve year old?” He inquired gently, kneeling at Monaca’s side. His ice breaker question was ignored, unsurprisingly.

Nagito realized that trying to ease the conversation along slowly may not work, so he started to be slightly more direct.

“I have a surprise for you.”

This caused Monaca to turn over, and glace in his direction with a barely interested look. “You’ll have to come with me and see.'' was Nagito’s response. Monaca’s eyes rolled in annoyance before Nagito was facing her back again.

Nagito started monologuing about how life was hard for him at 12 without a support system in place, because of his parents passing. He would have given anything to have people he could lean on during puberty, and he was dying for a place that felt like his own, and people that he could call his own. He thinks it would have changed the directory of his life.

“Do you want that Monaca?” He asked suddenly, “You don’t want to end up a maladjusted adult like me, huh?” His eyebrows raised as he awaited Monica's response.

Before she spoke, it felt like her stomach was dropping repeatedly. But she sucked it up, “I…I don’t have anything to lose.” At first Nagito was confused by that, but then the girl attempted to stand up, on wobbly legs.

Nagito jumped with shock, and lifted her from the ground. Despite the suddenness of the situation he smiled at the green eyed child, “It might be a long walk.”

As the duo walked towards their destination Monaca couldn’t help but start to think. Power is limited. After being paralyzed for the first time she felt so powerful. She thought she could do anything with the pity (turned power) that she had. She helped bring down the world. But thanks to less than 0.00001 percent of the population all of the damage was reversed.

The sky, once stained blood red with despair, was now becoming a calming swirl of purple and orange. All of her hard work. Her Monokuma’s. It was erased by one four letter word. Hope. Not that any of it even mattered anymore.

Thinking about all of the terror she caused made her heart quench; especially since the world was slowly returning to normal. She knew what happened to war criminals. There were hardly any child-friendly books at her fathers place. But those also gave a glimpse into what she believed her future held.

Life in prison, She was only twelve, so that would be a grudgingly long time to rot in a cold cell. But that’s on the lighter side. She was responsible for thousands of deaths directly, and who knows how many people were slain at the hands of her Monokuma’s. Millions at least. What would a punishment for that be?

If it were back in the Victorian Era it wouldn’t be surprising to be hung for such atrocities. The electric chair was also an option. Maybe they’d bring the guillotine back just for Monaca. But it is 2011. In the west they have lethal injections.

But that was all under a steady government, and no one in recent history has brought down entire nations, let alone the world. She honestly would be surprised if they flat-out murdered her.

‘This is my future’. Monaca whispers to herself. ‘How did it end up like this? How?’ of course she couldn’t understand. She was a 10-year old puppet. The girl’s breath hitched as she really let it sink in.

“Umm…Monaca?” Nagito hums with concern.

It takes the young girl a moment to collect herself, and steady her breath after experiencing such thoughts. She almost forgot that they were actually trying to go somewhere.

“Sorry, um-Nagito. Monaca was a little distracted with…something else.” Her voice was wavering and low as she called her horrific thoughts. But Nagito just smiled, and gave an understanding nod of the head.

Silence smoothly settles in, allowing Monaca to observe the things around her. The street, once littered with bodies, was bare and clean. The buildings, still as crumbling and dilapidated as before she went to space. She just assumed the Future Foundation hadn’t gotten around to it yet. She looks up.

Up to her left to steal a glance at the person who her arm was intertwined with. The first thing she noticed was his eyes. There was definitely a big change there. Still that interesting gray color, liny, cupped by dark circles. But they weren’t as oppressive with the feeling of insanity. They were calm…Almost happy.

His hair was as white as ever, but was noticeably stringier, and thinning out. He seemed to still be getting sicker by the day. But he also seemed happier, warmer, and even more kind.

As her mind became engrossed with the memory of him gently carrying her to safety after the headquarters collapsed; him making sure she had everything she needed to live, and even getting one of his friends, who was the Ultimate nurse to treat her, she rested her head on his one fully intact arm.

When Monaca peeked at Nagito’s prosthetic arm she felt darkly comforted. They were both Junko’s puppets.

Looking back up at Nagito’s face, and seeing his calm smile she wondered if he still had that love-hate feeling toward Junko. As the days turned to months, Monaca’s affection towards Junko swirled in her stomach. But she was still overwhelmingly in love with her. A feeling that she didn’t really know what to do with.

With a deep breath, her green eyes closed.

A familiar feeling caused Monica's eyes to flutter open. Nagito’s bony yet loving hands patting her back. If she had any pride left she would be embarrassed to fall back into letting Nagito carry her.

“Hmmm?” Monaca hummed lightly.

“So. Are you hungry Monaca?” A straightforward question, gets a straightforward answer.. “Yes.” Monaca internally rolled her eyes at the, frankly, idiotic question. Just to emphasize the answer, Monaca's stomach gave a deep rumble.

“What do you like to eat?” He continued to press for deeper answers. But The young girl was not really giving him what he wanted.

“I don’t think eating what you like really matters anymore.” Her voice had a noticeably growing attitude in it that told Nagito that his questions were starting to annoy her. But he just needed her to give him something, just a sliver of information to give to the chef.

“Well if you could have anything, what would it be?” He eyed her to see if he was still in the clear. His question was met with an impatient groan.

“Well, it doesn’t really matter! But since you have to keep asking; I’ll eat whatever, as long as it’s not cold.” With that grumpy question, Monaca tried to bury her face in Nagito;s shoulder.

Nagito pulled out his phone to inform a certain “Ultimate Cook”.

“She says she likes whatever, as long as it’s not cold. - Sincerely, Nagito”

“That will do I guess but it would better if there was something specific for me to cook”

“I’m so sorry, but that’s all that I could get out of her. - Sincerely, Nagito”

“She doesn’t like cold things so I guessing that means ice cream, and cake are off of the table”

“I would still have a little prepared in case, if she doesn’t want it, give it to the others. - Sincerely, Nagito”

“Got it! And you know you don’t need to keep saying “sincerely, Nagito” "I have your number saved.”

“I’m so sorry TeruTeru. I’ll try to stop.”

“Great! See you there”

Quickly, Nagito’s phone slipped into his pocket. He checked in on Monaca, who was dozing off again. It would probably be another several hours before they reached their destination. It would be tiring, but it needed to be done.

It will probably be another hour until they reach their destination, but Nagito is barely hanging on at this point, and is in desperate need of some rest. Thankfully, he eyed a nearby bench that he could use to rest his aching heart.

“What’s happening?” A small, curious voice mumbled. Nagito was really hoping she would remain asleep until they were settled in at their destination. It was really his fault alone; he shouldn’t have allowed himself to hope for such a silly thing.

“I was just resting a bit Monaca, we're only a half hour away from our destination.” He offered a small exhausted smile, trying to reassure her that nothing was wrong.

Of course, there was something obviously wrong. He was practically dying. He was weak and sick, so that’s why they need to get to their destination as soon as possible. Monaca needs as much help to thrive as possible, and this was going to be the thing to save Nagito’s life.

“You're hurting. Aren’t you?” Monaca’s blunt question was a shock, but it was welcome. There was no need for him to beat around the bush, and pretend. The white haired one gave a weak nod that ended with him giving a hearty laugh. It really showed the illness in his face.

“I can walk the rest of the way myself. Monaca doesn’t need you to keep feeling like you have to take care of me. I’m strong enough.” She had spent the majority of her life taking care of herself. Picking herself up after her brother and father were finished with her, tucking herself away from the bullying an embarrasment that came from being a bastard child. She certainly didn’t need Nagito, the definition of misfortune, to take care of her.

“If you're up to it, Monaca. I don’t want you to put pressure on your legs, and risk irreversible damage. It is just a 30 minute walk, but be mindful.” Nagito was trying to appear stronger, and mature, but the growing hoarseness in his voice betrayed him. If anyone needed to be carried, it was him. The one with the weak heart, and the prosthetic arm. Monaca scrunched up her nose at his annoying servitude, and disingenuous selflessness. ‘He really needs to start putting more value in himself.” Monaca resisted the urge to shake her head.

They carried on, and at some point, the main road stopped. Monaca, who had no idea where they were supposed to be, was unable to move forward. Nagito had to drag the reluctant girl through the thick trees that were in their way.

“Why are we doing this!” Monaca whines, nearly in tears as she is pricked by branches, and harsh leaves. But what is said next leaves her absolutely dumbfounded.

“I didn’t remember how to get to the road we’re supposed to be on. Just one moment, and I’ll find it. Bear with me please.” His voice was cherry, and innocent.

‘He just doesn’t understand how incompetent, and pathetic he sounds? Does he?’ The younger one just chooses not to respond to those words, but can’t help but wonder how he lived to be older than 15.

Eventually, a wide dirt road appeared before the duo. It was so long, that when Monaca looked to either side of it she couldn’t tell where it ended. But Nagito quickly grabbed her hand and started down the road.

“We’ll be there very soon, Monaca. Are you excited?” Nagito’s question reinstated Monaca’s apprehension. Could you really be excited about something you didn’t even know?

“Can you tell Monaca where exactly we’re going? The truth.” Her tone of voice implied that she didn’t believe that they were just going to some place for support. It shouldn't come as a surprise, considering what has happened in the past. She thinks she’s being led to her death.

“It’s just like I said Monaca. We’re going somewhere to build up support systems. It’s going to help you. I promise.” His half-answer didn’t provide Monaca anymore assurance. He did promise that she was going to get help. But promises don’t mean anything.

Monaca's anxiety about the whole situation only grew. It was like she was a pressure cooker of nerves, and she couldn't control her aggressive shaking.

Nagito pulled the girl closer since he could feel her shaking hands. There wouldn’t be anything to do about it until she could see that everything would be okay for herself.

Ten minutes passed, and a gray arch appeared with the words Future Foundation Rehabilitation Center engraved on it. Several feet away from it was a small building, sort of like a ticket booth.

“Rehabilitation Center? Future Foundation…” Monaca’s barely audible voice still caught Nagito’s attention. A dark shadow engulfed the girl's face as her green locks covered her eyes.

“What…Does Rehabilitation Mean?” The first thing that appeared in Monaca’s mind was shock therapy. She was always threatened with being sent away, and getting shocks.

“I’m not completely sure myself. I know that they’ll be providing coping skills, any physical treatments necessary, and Therapy. Things like that.” Nagito seemed more enthused about being able to get physical treatment. But therapy came up again, and the word was not sitting well with the little girl.

They walked some more, but a woman with gray pigtails came out of the building. She brandished a sword, and the sight made Monaca jump behind Nagito.

“Haha. Hello Peko!” The white haired boy tried to stop any tension from arising between the Monaca, and Peko Pekoyama. His hand raised in the ‘it’s okay’ position.

“Nagito.” Peko said with a nod before looking at the girl cowering behind him, “Monaca?” She knew that they would be arriving together, but was just getting a definite confirmation from Nagito.

“Yes. Will we need to do anything to check in?” Nagtio was cool and collected. It surprised Monaca to see that he actually knew what he was doing. Normally he was sort of awkward, and oblivious.

The pair followed Peko inside of the building. They had to first get an initial picture taken. After their hands were thoroughly washed they got fingerprints. Fuyuhiko was also there, and confirmed the demographic information they had on file for Monaca. Sonia greeted Monaca with a firm handshake, and a hug that shocked the girl to her core.

“Took ya’ long enough to get her here!” Fuyuhiko shouted to Nagito who could only laugh dryly, and scratch his head. Upon seeing Monaca’s confused face, they explained to her that they were all friends, and classmates, are recovering remnants of despair.

Of course Monaca could have guessed that, but she wasn't feeling confident enough to speak about the tragedy. She remembers Nagito’s Friend Mikan, and she knew of the remnants of despair. Name there was the ultimate mechanic that made the big bang Monokuma. But she doesn’t specifically remember any of the remnants before her.

“Monaca! On behalf of the Future Foundation, and everyone here, I am honored, and grateful to have you here!” Sonia loudly announces, “I wish you all the best.” This entire situation seemed surreal. Monaca didn’t even fully know where she was, and what was going to happen.

Nagito and the other three former remnants exchanged some words, before Monaca was ushered out of the building, and they were back on the road.

Before long they came to a ginormous clearing in the middle of the wood.

That wasn’t it. It was like an entire village. There were different buildings, and dirt roads that all intertwined. A sandbox, slides, and seesaw’s. A gargantuan tree like Monaca had never seen in her life.

The shocked girl didn’t notice her mouth was hanging agape.

“Is that a sign that you like it?” Nagito’s smooth voice broke through to her, also bringing her attention to her ‘O’ shaped mouth. She only nodded in response to the question.

She was greeted by two more people. This time it was two people she knew very well.

“Izuru. Makoto…”

Her face felt hard and hot. After she went into space she never thought she had to face them (or anyone else for that matter) ever again. It was Junko’s right hand man, and the guy who caused her death.

“I’m not Izuru, Monaca. I am Hajime Hinata.” The taller one's voice was really cool, with a hint of anger. For the second time in the last hour the girl was hiding behind Nagito.

“We’re really happy you guys made it to us safely!” Makoto came in to save the day, pretty typical. That didn’t seem to make the girl any less fearful.

“Yes, we both are,” Hajime says with a sign in his voice, “I didn’t mean to scare you Monaca. It just came out wrong.” His voice was still monotone, but he sounded kinder, in order to make the youngest comfortable.

Monaca was practically pressing her face into Nagito’s arm while the three men talked. She didn’t know what old names she’d come across, and what old flames would burn once more. It made her want to vomit.

She couldn’t bring herself to open her eyes for she didn’t want to see her past looking back at her. She didn’t deserve to hide away, she knew that. But she just couldn’t force herself to confront her demons. Not now at least.

“Should we just start with check-ups?” Makoto suggests in his stupid happy-go-lucky voice. Monaca didn’t want to move at all. She just wants to fall to the ground and disintegrate.

Before she could provide her input they were all already walking on a path, presumably to where the check-ups would happen. Nagito was dragging the girl along, until he just scooped her to make things easier.

“It’s going to be fine Monaca. It’s just a general wellness check-up, not shots or anything like that.” Nagito tries unsuccessfully to get rid of the nervousness that was radiating off of Monaca. To no avail, as she was still shaking like a leaf in his arms.

At the end of the road, they came upon a building that was painted white, and blue with the stereotypical cross symbol that represented medical buildings. It was pretty small. But it still looked okay.

“Oh Monaca! You're not walking, are your legs okay?!” A concerned shrieky voice gripped the girl. Vibrant green eyes stared into dull violet ones.

Before she could get a word out she is snatched by Mikan, and taken into the medical building. There is something of a teeny tiny reception area that has a door leading to the room where actual medic stuff happens.

Monaca is layed down lovingly on a bed, as Mikan cooed at her. She was acting neurotic, but was still being sweet and caring towards the little girl.

“My legs are okay, miss.” Mikan’s franticness was rubbing off on Monaca, and it was showing in her voice.

“Oh! That's great.” The nurse heaved a little, and grabbed a stethoscope. Almost immediately she continues on humming sweetly, and checking the girl's heart beat, and goes through the typically physical exam stuff.

Once she makes sure she isn’t carrying some odd illnesses that need to be treated immediately, she moves on to Nagito’s exam. Of course he has a lot of issues, but nothing that had to happen within the next day, or week even.

“Would you guys like to rest?” Hajime asked while leading them away from the medical building. Nagito was quick to agree, but Monaca doesn’t want to.

“Well we’ll just take the both of you to the resting area, and you can sleep if you want to, or not.” With that, they were brought to another building. It had two doors at the front, but it didn’t seem to matter.

Inside there were four bunk beds, but Monaca and Nagito both sat on one of the bottom bunks.

“Thanks so much for this Makoto, and Hajime.” This brought the ending of their travels to a close. After nudging Monaca to say thank you to the two brunette’s Nagito went to sleep. Leaving Monaca to her own devices.

Her apprehension with being here continues to grow. She wanted to convince herself that she didn’t care what would happen to her here, but she was only human. Self preservation was her top priority by nature.

She could probably escape pretty easily if she left as soon as possible. But then what. Who knows what would happen to her. What people she would encounter when she left. What they would do if they found out what role she played in history.

Monaca was a genius. But there were still faults in her thinking, she was only human. At this point, her legs were barely allowing her to walk, and she couldn’t control anything, or anyone. So she took a deep breath, got in bed with Nagito, and slept.

Chapter Text

Yesterday, when Monaca woke up, Nagito was quietly sitting in a chair humming. When she looked outside of the window the sun appeared to be setting. Based on that, she deduced it was probably around 6:00 P.M.

Suddenly, a sharp pain in her tummy made Monaca hiss. When was the last time she’d eaten?

“Oh that’s right!” Nagito exclaimed out of the blue, looking very pleased. Monaca’s confused look coaxed him to explain his outburst.

“Dinner will be served shortly.” He stood up, and pulled the younger one out of bed abruptly. This was something that happened fairly recently when the pair was basically living together. He started walking to the door, but Monaca protested.

“No! Monaca wants to stay here!” She dug her heels into the ground, and snatched her arm away from the boy. “I can’t go out.”

Nagito didn’t want to force Monaca out of her comfort zone, but he knew that she needed to eat. He wanted to talk to Kirumi to see if she could eat in the rest building, but also didn’t want to leave the young girl unaccompanied.

“Hey how’s everything going here?” Makoto asked gleefully, not understanding his position as a saving grace. “Dinner;s almost ready, so if you guys want to wash up. Hopefully the future foundation will be sending you personalized supplies soon.”

“Well, about that. Monaca doesn’t want to go to the dinning hall…” Nagito awkwardly informed the younger boy. A confused grin crept up the ultimate hopes face, but he was quick on his toes to make a response.

“Well, normally when someone arrives they are introduced at dinner. But we can definitely make exceptions for Monaca.” Makoto’s patience let Nagito give a sigh of relief. Monaca also became less tense knowing she could continue to hide herself in this resting building.

A little while later two bowls with steaming hot pot were brought in by Makoto and Hajime. It was a lovely, yummy looking red, filled with beef, mushrooms, and lots of other yummy stuff. Along with a side of rice, and tea.

Monaca’s heart warmed as the hot soup ran down her throat. It had been years since she’s had hot pot, even before the tragedy, having a good hot meal was rare for her. She was so happy she could jump for joy, but she needed to save her energy.

“Hey! That’s cheating!” Monaca all but screamed at Nagito as he quickly worked to make an illegal move with his knight piece. The game of chess started out peacefully. But it quickly escalated as the stakes became higher.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about Monaca.” He feigned innocence, but Monaca was not buying any of it. “Put the piece back, and play PROPERLY!” Her voice only continued to grow in volume. Everything was all in good fun, but Nagito also knew when a temper tantrum was brewing.

“All right, all right.” He softly moved the piece back, and instead chose to move his bishop. It is unsurprising that Monaca was in the lead throughout most of the game.

At the very end, Monaca had more than half her pieces, while Nagito only had two pawn’s, a rook, and his king. Monaca was a shoe in to win. But Nagito couldn’t resist trying to trick Monaca again.

He grabbed his rook, and moved it in an L direction, knocking Monaca’s king over. “NOOO! Stop doing THAT!” Just as Monaca flipped the chessboard over, the door creaked open to reveal Makoto and Hajime with two slices of cake.

“Hey! What’s going on here?” A slight disappointment in Makoto’s voice made Nagito flinch, and shrink himself. But Monaca was feeling confident as ever.

“HE was CHEATING!” After that the girl flew off on a tangent, and let out quite a few insulting words, and phrases. She was talking so fast, and shouting so much that her face was becoming visibly red.

“And so that’s why-” She was cut off by Hajime, “Ah. Shhhh…Calm down Monaca. We brought the two of you some cake. So why don’t you forgive Nagito, and enjoy your cake.” His cool voice normally would have put Monaca off, but this time it was successful in calming her down.

“Have a great birthday Monaca!” Hajime smiled for the first time since Monaca and Nagito’s arrival. Makoto echoed Hajime’s mini celebration, and they were both quickly on their way out. Monaca’s birthday had been kept pretty underwraps, but no one had forgotten it. They all collectively thought that it was post to not overwhelm the girl with a big party, especially on her first day at the rehab center.

Since no one really knew much about Monaca’s specific likes, or dislikes they just made a plain vanilla cake with plain vanilla icing. At home, Monaca swiftly learned that she couldn’t be very choosy with her food, because it wouldn’t always be offered. And asking wasn't always a safe option. She took what she could get.

Several hours had passed, and Monaca was stubbornly staying awake. “I’m not tired though.” Her whines were increasing in volume. Her fluttering eyes, and bobbing head failed to convince Nagito.

“Don’t you want to play Monaca tomorrow? You need to be fully rested to play.” He tried again to convince her that going to sleep was a good idea, “Nothing is going to happen tonight.” The girl rather aggressively rubbed her face in a ditch attempt to re energize herself, but it only succeeded in making her face hurt.

Eventually she plopped down on the bed, whether it was from giving up on staying awake, or she actually just passed out from exhaustion could be anyone's guess. But soon light snores were emanating from Monaca’s tired body. Nagito wanted nothing more than to plop down, and pass out just like her, but he had to go check in with the others.

“So, I think I'll be able to do the thorough historical examination in about a week, which, as I’m sure you all know, includes physical, and mental tests. Based on my surface examination I see no reason why she can’t be around everyone, and start thriving.” Mikan’s hands were slightly balled, and against her collar bones in a typical fashion. No one objected to her statements, and Maki decided to bounce off of that.

“When I spoke to the other warriors they seemed to all be okay with it. They understand that, like all of them, this is Monaca’s second chance. Kotoko was actually excited to have Monaca share a room with her. I do know that important boundaries will need to be set between the five of them. But everything is going smoothly.” Maki gave a slight nod to show that she was finished. Everything appeared to be fine with all of the kids. But Children are volatile. No one knew that better than Maki. Things could go pretty bad, pretty fast. She would have to stay alert.

After discussing Monaca, the attention turned to Nagito, the newest long term resident of the Future Foundation Rehabilitation Center.

“You can get your treatment in less than three months.” Mikan explained. It would be outsourced at one of Towa cities hospitals that would have all of the medicine and equipment needed for it. It would take about 1 and a half weeks for the treatment to be complete, but afterwards, any treatment for his chronic disorders would not be necessary.

It was going to be a sort of test to see if the new way of handling it would actually work, but it was better than just waiting for Nagito to continue to deteriorate until he died a slow painful death. Even better, it would give all of them time to adjust. But every coin has two sides, if anything goes wrong it is going to be hard on the whole center.

“We’re just going to need to run several more intensive tests, then it should all work out. Of course you will continue intensive physical therapy, and psychological counseling, along with everyone else. But things will start to become much better.” Mikan concluded soundly, with a sweet smile lighting her face.

Of course, the specific action plan for each resident will be handled between mikan, and the other medical professionals on, and off site. It is going to be a complex procedure to help all of these people, but it will be for the betterment of the entire world.

Monaca woke up to see that the sun had not yet risen. But that was nothing new. She’s always been a very light sleeper. It gave her time to think when she would wake up in the middle of the might, which was a blessing and a curse. As the sound of quiet was the only thing to distract her, her thoughts would quickly get out of control.

‘Honestly, throughout the entire pregnancy I just wished she would have a miscarriage. I knew that the brat would bring nothing but trouble, and here she is. Even now, I pray until the late hours of the night that I’ll find her at the bottom of the stairs with a cracked skull, or floating face down in the bathtub. I just want her to disappear.’

Monaca sat at the kitchen table with a french vocabulary book. Every Towa needs to learn French. She was supposed to be whispering the words, as not to disturb her father, or brother, and whatever company they had over. Her father was just so loud, and she knew he was talking about her. Even as a four-year-old she knew that she wasn’t wanted by anyone.

‘I told that bitch to get an abortion, but she insisted. If only I’d known I would have done something about it to begin with. She was always a lying slut. Now I’m stuck with her mess.’

That was interesting. She’d heard the word ‘abortion all of the time. Namely when her brother was screaming at her. It never really made sense to her, she’d have to look at a dictionary, the curiosity was beginning to kill her.

‘AHH!’

She heard herself shriek before feeling a sharp pain on her face.

‘Maybe! Instead of being a little sneak, you should be practicing your french!” Monaca felt her fathers hot breath on her face before she felt the back of her shirt collar grab her so tightly that she thought she might choke.

She felt she was levitating as she approached her bedroom, and she started failing about because she didn’t know what would happen in there, or how her father would punish her.

Once he got the door about, Monaca’s father practically sent her flying to the wall. She barely had a chance to crawl to her bed before something flew at her and smacked her square in the face.

‘Ya little shit.’

“Ahh!” The girl heard her own voice, but this time there was no sharp pain, just a pounding in her chest. She felt her trembling fingers grip her hair as she tried hiding her face in her knees.

“Monaca.” A soft monotone voice filled the young one’s head. “Monaca.” She looked up at whoever was saying her name.

Before her was a young girl who looked to be no older than 18.

“Monaca. Can you tell me what’s wrong?” Monaca looked into deep red eyes and suddenly became very embarrassed. “It was nothing.” Her voice was tiny, being barely audible to the girl in front of her. She couldn’t believe that she just randomly screamed like that. It was like she had lost control.

“Okay…” The young woman slowly drawled with a disbelieving tone. “Well, I’m Maki and I was hoping to be able to talk to you.”

Maki walked Monaca directly to a building painted yellow with blue edges, and a bright red roof. It was labeled ‘Child Center’. Inside there was a small room that had a small couch, and desk with a computer. “This is the child center, you’ll spend most of your day in the vicinity of this building.”

The door that was between the desk and the couch was gently pushed by Maki to reveal a great big room with wide tall windows. There were toys, and costumes, and art supplies, and books, and sports stuff, and robots! She’d never seen anything more colorful. It was actually pretty overwhelming. She felt stuck in place as her head spun with everything surrounding her.

“You like robots, don't you?” A smile could be heard in Maki’s voice as she gave a knowing tilt towards Monaca. “It’s okay. And these robots, and everything else is for you and the other kids to do what you will. Within the rules.”

“Which leads me to the next thing,” Maki was leading them to a door which was labeled ‘Maki’s Office (Ask Permission To Enter)’. It was adorned with a desk, a small table, and bean bag chairs. Among other things. The older one led Monaca to sit on a small two person couch. Once she sat her down, she took the seat next to her. “We need to go over the rules.”

There was a long list of specific rules that were for Monaca only, it was compiled into a packet so that it could be referenced. Many specific rules overlap, but lots are specific to each person, and every resident has one. There are several general, common sense rules that Maki was going to go over in detail.

Future Foundation Rehabilitation Center Rules:
Respect everyone's identities, backgrounds, personalities, sexualities, histories, and other creeds; exceptions will be added as needed.
No Violence; includes slapping, punching, pinching, kicking, spitting, stomping, elbowing, and any other physical attacks to another person.
No emotional harassment/assault/abuse; includes yelling, screaming, gaslighting and guilt tripping (and any other forms of manipulation), swearing meant to hurt, and any other verbal and non-verbal attacks on another person.
No leaving the Center (Leaving means going past the welcome booth near the main entrance, or 1,000 into the woods in any direction); exceptions for those with a signed off, valid reason. Must be accompanied by at least two higher-ups.
Refrain from committing any other misdemeanors/petty crimes/civil crimes frowned upon by society before the tragedy; exceptions may occur, and be added as necessary.

“These rules will be pasted in almost every room you can think of. And most rooms will have individual rules, kitchens, bathrooms, and bedrooms for example, all have specific rules. You can see the child center rule when we leave.” Maki gave a deep sigh as she turned around in her chair to grab some paper and pencil. Once she put them down Monaca was staring as the older girl wrote ‘Monaca’s notes’.

From there the little girl was asked a series of questions about herself. What’s her favorite color? Green. What’s her favorite animal? A duck. And so on. But the questions started to get a little uncomfortable for Monaca.

What was school like for you? Were your teachers nice? Did you get along well with your mom and dad? What about your sibling(s)? Did you ever feel sad at home? Did you feel hopeless a lot? Why?

At this point Monaca was just lying, and making things up. But she didn’t know that Maki already knew almost everything about the girl. Her mother abandoned her, and her brother and father were absolutely horrible. Those were some of the outstanding issues.

“Well…Thank you for answering my questions. I can show you the main areas of the rehab center, and then you can get ready, and I’ll take you to the dining hall for breakfast.” The child care giver gave Monaca a slight side eye knowing that she was just lying through her teeth, but she still gave her a smile. But it was not reciprocated.

“Monaca’s not going to the dining hall.” Her face was pulled down as her eyes went towards Maki’s, who was still smiling sweetly. “I know that you don’t want to, Monaca…but aren’t you hungry?” The older girl knew that this probably wasn’t going to work, but she needed to start planting little seeds, and chip away at the apprehension little bits at a time.

“Well, why can’t I just eat in my room like yesterday?!” hostility could be heard in her voice as she backed away with her arms crossed. That wouldn’t be an option after a couple of days, “Well…You’re not going to be able to do that. You’re…You’re going to get ants.”

“I don’t care, and I know Nagito doesn’t care either.” Monaca’s pout could be heard in her voice, and the young girls arguing was making things even more difficult for Maki, and it took lots of restraint to not just tell her the plain truth.

“Fine. You don’t have to eat in the dining hall today, but you will tomorrow. You MAY NOT bargain anymore.” Makis’ was nervous that her stern face, and voice would scare Monaca, but instead it was met with an eye roll. After a few moments passed Maki grabbed the girl, and finished showing her around the Child Center.

The tension was lifted when Monaca saw the tire swings, slides, and sand pit (Among other things). And Maki diverted her attention from the previous conversation by asking her what she was looking forward to playing with most. Of course, she knew that as time went on it would only get harder to distract her from the bigger issues that were bound to come up.

Breakfast came, simple miso soup, and rice for everyone, including Monaca and Nagito. Either Monaca didn’t know, or she didn’t care that Nagito would have preferred to eat in the dining hall with all of the others. But it didn’t happen. He was okay with it though, because he knew that Monaca needed someone with her, so he was willing to sacrifice some social interaction time for Monaca’s well-being.

Lunch rolled around, red bean soup with Mochi, still simple. It had to be, so few people cooking for so many people could only yield so much.

“Do you maybe…want to go outside, Monaca.” Nagito addressed the green haired girl that was faced entirely away from him, and was looking at a deck of cards. Unsurprisingly, she rapidly shook her head, and started shuffling the deck. It was going to be difficult tomorrow.

Monaca was the only child that did not know what was going to happen tomorrow. Kotoko knew, and all of the boys knew. Practically everyone at the center knew. Those who it concerned most were braced for whatever resistance would happen. But it would have to be done. Monaca needs to know how to behave, and live with other people.

Dinner finally rolled around, and it was brought by Maki, who was quickly trailed by Makoto, and Hajime. It was plain white rice with katsu. Nothing too heavy. The conversation was going to carry enough weight for a while.

“So, Monaca…how are you liking the center? I know that Maki showed you around earlier today. What are-are your impressions?” Makoto failed to hide the worry in his voice as he tried to ease into a conversation with the little girl. Her neck was craned so that her chin was pressing into her collar bones, and she was deeply focused on her fried chicken, and rice. Or at least, she was pretending to be.

This, of course, prompted Makoto to repeat what he said. Moments later he was met with a sorta, “it’s cool, I guess…” shrug from Monaca who scooped a large spoonful of rice in her mouth.

Makoto broke the awkward silence with an even more awkward, and out of place chuckle. “That’s not really an answer, is it…” He remarked slowly, not sure how what he said would go over with the small girl.

Vibrant, light green eyes met his beige ones, before traveling to the dull green eyes of Hajime who had a neutral expression that turned to a slight grimace when Monaca made eye contact.

She felt heat rise to her face, and only stiffened more as Maki sat on the floor next to her. She was so uncomfortable that she knew that any more pressure might make her burst into tears. So she took a deep breath, and just started talking.

“Monaca-I think that this is a…is a lovely place. And I like it…A lot?” Once she finished her sentence she searched the faces of the adults in front of her to see if she had said that right thing. Makoto had a small, kind smile, while Maki’s face was blank, and Hajime still had a tiny grimace.

There was nothing she was getting from them, so she looked behind her to see if Nagito had any reaction. He just had his typical dopey smile. It did ease her worries to know that Nagito was there.

“Well I’m happy that you have a good impression. But I mean-This room is cramped!” Makoto spoke like he was making a joke, but the only person to give a light chuckle was Nagito.

“I guess. Monaca doesn’t really mind it.” The small girl craned her chin into her collar bones once more, and started playing with the rice on her plate. She wasn’t really sure where he was going with this. All of the beating around the bush was confusing her a little.

“A growing girl like you needs a bigger room, and more space,” He hesitated, and took a deep breath as the anxiety in his chest bubbled, “You're going to be moving into a new, bigger, permanent room.” The brown haired boy searched the girl's face, and he noticed that there was a quizzical expression on it.

“That’s fine. As long as Nagito is there, Monaca is fine with whatever.” Welp, there it is. The first conflicting issue.

“Nagito isn’t going to be there sweetie. He is also moving into a bigger room, but it won't be the same one as yours.” He flinched when he saw the negative look on Monaca’s face. A pit grew in his stomach as he struggled to decipher what emotion was plastered on the girl's face, “He will be very close by though, so you don’t have to worry.”

“Why can’t we just share a room?” Monaca suggested after several seconds. Makoto’s heart sank as he looked into her glowing green eyes. He could see that small tears were threatening to spill. “Well this just can’t happen. But it’s going to be good. I promise.” Of course that was an empty promise, and he wasn’t sure how this would play out.

“Well we can just stay in this room.” Monaca says with narrowed eyes.

“This is the guest room,” Makoto states firmly before he gives a great big grin, “The room you're gonna be moving into is going to have clothes, pictures, and toys that you will love! It’s going to be much more fun than this boring small room!” He hyped up all of the positives to no avail, as Monaca did not seem happy at all.

“And this room needs to be reserved for the guests. Permanent residents live in the houses, and you’re a resident now so you have to live in the houses.” Makoto closed his eyes as he awaited a response from Monaca. But it didn’t come. So he continued on cautiously.

“So, tomorrow after breakfast you're going to move into the Cub House,” That got an eye raise from Monaca who swiftly asked a question, “Cub House? Why is it called that?” Her voice was incredulous, and she was actually amused by the name.

Of course this made everyone nervous because it was time to drop the atomic bomb of information, “Well…it’s called the Cub House because it’s where all the kids stay…The other…Warriors of Hope.” Boom. there it is, all laid out. No more talking around it, and no taking it back.

Monaca’s eyes darkened as she glared into her lap. This would have been valuable information to have before she arrived. Of all the enemies she has in the world, the people that she’s wronged the most. And she was going to be sharing a LIVING SPACE with them?! This is horrifying!

She surprised herself with tears. She couldn’t even feel it coming, but her heart exploded with fear. She wanted to shake, and scream. She just wanted to run away until everything faded into nothing. Her trembling hands covered her wet face as she attempted to rise from the floor on shaking legs.

Words bubbled up in her eyes, but didn’t understand it. She couldn’t understand anything. She doesn’t want to die. That’s the only thing she could think of. She doesn’t want to die. Doesn’t want to die. Doesn't wanna die! Doesn’t wanna die…

“I-I can’t! Please!” Hands were on her, and it only heightened the fear that enveloped her entire body. The air around her was thick, and hot. She couldn’t get it in, like it wasn’t air at all. More like a thick, poisonous gas surrounded her.

The small body collapsed to the ground to the horror of all of the adults around her. It was a hectic hour afterwards as Maki, Mikan, and Nagito did the best that they could to calm the child down. It seemed that no matter what they said there was no change to Monaca's demeanor at all. She just had to gradually calm down with time.

“Can you talk, or do you want us to give you some space?” Maki proceeded cautiously as she sat across from the green haired child on the soft carpet.

“Monaca can talk.” She was heard barely above an inaudible whisper, but accepted it.

“You are going to move into the new place tomorrow. As you know the other…children will be there. You will be sharing the room with another girl. Do you have anything you want to say? Don’t hold back.” Maki wanted to avoid another anxiety attack, so that led her to omitting certain words, and names. An unsteady breath came from the little girl.

“Monaca hurt them…” Her little chin quivered once the words left her lips, “I know I don’t deserve it. But I’m scared.”

The older girl smiled internally at that, it wasn’t that she hated them -that she could tell- but that she was feeling guilty, and scared. “I don’t think you have anything to be scared about. But what are your concerns?”

Monaca went on to explain that she was scared that they hated her, and that they would want to kill her because she was so horrible to them. But moments later Maki was able to explain that the Future Foundation Rehabilitation Center was a place to grow from whatever you have done in the past. It is a place of rectification, and forgiveness. No one is going to hold anyone’s past against them, as long as they’re trying to do better.

Monaca was tired. She was physically tired, and mentally tired. All of the arguing, and trying to convince people to do things in the way that she wants was wearing on her, and she just needed a break from it. Living with the other Warriors of Hope is just something she’d have to accept. No matter what it brought upon her.

After Maki tied up any loose ends with Monaca she said good night. Nagito tucked Monaca in, and the two spent their last night in the same room together. The white haired boy was able to fall asleep pretty quickly, but Monaca was thinking of how her relationships with the other warriors of hope ended.

The one that caused the most anxiety was Kotoko. The last thing she said to her was a huge rock on her chest, threatening to suffocate her.

“So die a totes adorable death…”

Those parting words played in her mind like a broken record all night. All the way through the sunrise, up until Maki opened the door, and told Monaca and Nagito that they should get ready to move into their new rooms after breakfast.

The eggs, and toast sat at the bottom of her stomach like a weight as she waited for Maki to walk her to the Cub House. Nagito was talking to her, and how he was excited to move into the Koala house. But Monaca could only nod in response as her throat felt dry, and she was afraid that all of her words would get choked up if she tried to speak.

The walk was terrifyingly short, after dropping Nagito off at the gray Koala House Maki and Monaca approached the brightly colored Cub House. The brunette squeezed the green haired girl's hand in a reassuring gesture. They approached the red door that was overwhelming, and bright in the little girl's eyes.

Maki’s fist seems distorted as she knocked on the red wood, and her green eyes burned when the older girl looked over, and the two made eye contact.

Before she could prepare she came face to face with a cheerful looking girl with long pink hair. Kotoko Utsugi.

Chapter Text

Monaca and Kotoko stood face to face after such a long time of never seeing each other since the collapse of their headquarters. Emotions, and feelings had time to simmer and stew. Of course, based on different circumstances they both thought differently about the situation they were in at this very moment. The best way to show their contrasting feelings is with their faces right now.

Kotoko, on one hand, stood tall with shining eyes, and an even brighter shining smile. She looked ready to take on anything with a great attitude. On the other hand, Monaca’s face had a dark shadow over it, a frown so deep she looked a little like a pug. It took her everything she had to not to completely cower behind Maki.

Maki was the happy medium between the two of them with calm eyes, and a small smile, “Hello Kotoko! Can we come in?” After the pink-haired girl shook her head vigorously, Maki had to slightly drag Monaca into the common room.

“Are Masaru, Nagisa, and Jataro outside?” The older girl inquired to Kotoko, who was swift to answer. They continued to talk about things that drowned out to Monaca as she looked around the pastel orange colored room.

There was a blue rug on the floor with the Future Foundation Emblem on it, after so long of hating that logo Monaca couldn’t help but feel slightly disgusted as she saw it, but she was able to get over it pretty quick. Especially when her eyes laid upon a light green chest with a grayish-navy blue edge. The name “MONACA” was drawn on it in big sophisticated letters. If she wasn’t afraid to let go of Maki’s hand she would have immediately gone over to it to search its contents.

She noticed four other boxes. A pink one with red edges labeled Kotoko, A blue one with gray edges labeled Nagisa, a yellow one with golden brown edges labeled Jataro, and a red one with black edges labeled Masaru. She wondered what each of them held, if anything at all.

The room was also pretty cozy, there were several bean bags, and stools arranged in various places, along with a short yellow table. Monaca had seen places like this only in her wildest dreams. She just wants to plop down on one of those bean bags, and never get up again.

“-well, I just didn’t want to overwhelm her with there being a lot of people, but yes she’ll become reacquainted with all of you soon.” Maki’s voice filled Monaca’s ears all of a sudden, and the girl noticed that Kotoko had moved to a door that was off white, and had both Kotoko, and Monaca’s name written on it.

“Come on, Monaca!” Kotoko had an excited look on her face as she eagerly gestured for the green-haired girl to follow her. But she was met with hesitation as Monaca looked back at the brown-haired girl who appeared to be trying to sneak away, but stopped in her tracks once Monaca spotted her.

As Monaca’s stares prolonged the older girl just wanted to yell, “go! You don’t need to wait for me!” But of course she couldn’t do that, so she placed a stiff hand on her back, and started gently pushing her to the door that Kotoko has since opened.

After several awkward seconds Monaca was standing straight as a board right next to Kotoko, “Okay! Kotoko, you can finish showing Monaca around for a bit while I check on the boys. Then I will take you to your appointment.” And with that the brunette was off. Leaving a nervous Monaca, and Kotoko who was aloof to the other girls state.

Kotoko didn’t really know what to say, so she just started pointing out objects, and talking about them.

The right side of the room had all of her things. A bed that was decorated with various things that were all various shades of pink, red, and purple. Notably, there was a pink alligator toy that was right in the middle of her two pillows. The bed was also meticulously made, which only helped to make Monaca more uncomfortable.

There was also a wardrobe, a dresser, and a hanging egg chair. It looked like something that would fit Kotoko perfectly.

The attention was then brought to the left side of the room. Similarly, there was a bed, a wardrobe, a dresser, and a hanging egg chair. But it was all green. As green as the hair on Monaca’s head. Unlike Kotoko, there was nothing really standing out from it, besides the color of everything.

But it was amazing. It was the best room she had ever seen in her life. Better than the child center, and better than the room they were just in. It made her heart pound knowing that she would get to stay here. But anything really beats the cold, depressing, gray room back at the Towa residence that Monaca used to spend her life stuffed up in.

She was so in love with her new room that she completely forgot that Kotoko was right next to her.

“Do you like it?” The high-pitched voice brought Monaca back, and she turned to look at Kotoko, ready to jump up and down, and tell how she loved it already. But one look in those eyes, and her mind went blank.

After a few seconds she was able to respond, but it was only a pathetic nod, and she immediately faced away from her. She couldn’t see it, but Kotoko’s face turned into one of serious dismay for a split second. But thanks to her background in acting, she was able to quickly recover.

“Okay, I’ll leave you to it then!” The former actress beamed, but not before Monaca could stop her, “What are you leaving to Monaca?” The way that the confusion settled into her eyebrows made Kotoko laugh a little, “You can just continue to look around, there are clothes, and shoes in your dressers. I’m going to therapy, and the other will be outside. I think Maki might come back. Just make yourself at home!”

With that Kotoko skipped right out of the door, leaving Monaca to contemplate everything by herself.

She was being pretty nice to Monaca, but she knew that it was all an act. No one could forgive someone like her. And Monaca knew that she didn’t deserve forgiveness for all of the horrible things she’s done. She wasn’t going to let herself be a fool.

Before she knew it, Monaca found herself nodding off in the soft, warm, heavenly green bed that she now gets to call her own. As Monaca grew up in the Towa household she grew to hate the sound of silence. It pierced her ears like nails on a chalkboard. She never knew when it was going to end, or when it would be interrupted by a fit of rage.

But this sound of silence was a little different. It was a natural silence. The wind blew through the open window, and the grass made satisfying crunching sounds as particularly strong winds brushed up against them. She always fantasized about the rooms the other children at her school would describe when talking about their homes. It was a dream come true.

“Hey there!” The deep, carefree voice of None other than Nagito jolted Monaca from a place of serenity. She rushed to get out of her comfortable position, as she felt vulnerable with another person in the room. Nagito didn;t hesitate to laugh at what he thought was a silly reaction. “It’s lunch time!”

The lucky man walked hand-in-hand with Monaca to a place where, what seemed like hundreds of people were gathering in a long line. She clammed up a bit when she recognized Nagisa, Jataro, and Masaru in the line, and quickly pulled hair in front of her face, messing it up a great deal in the process.

With hair covering her eyes, she let herself be guided by Nagito. There was a table with too many egg sandwiches to count. Monaca did her best to not scrunch up her nose at the unappetizing meal, and shook her head at Nagito as discreetly as possible. Her way of communicating that she didn’t want to eat that. Luckily there were some potato chips, and water. It wasn’t a meal at all, but it was food.

Once the two finished eating they went to the Koala house where Nagito was going to be living. She hadn't seen the inside of it, so she was excited.

There were two doors on the outside. One labeled Rantaro, and Nagito. The other is labeled Gundham, and Imposter. ‘Who the hell is Imposter?’ Monaca thought to herself. But to her it didn’t really matter because he didn’t share a room with Nagito. But still, what parent would name their child that. But there was another question.

“Who is Rantaro?” She looked up at Nagito with quizzical eyes. Of course he gave an obvious answer, ‘he’s my roommate?’ To which Monaca only rolled her eyes, and didn’t press any further.

When the door was opened she first noticed that no one was there. Which was great because she didn’t want to talk to new people at the moment.

The next thing that drew her attention was a bookshelf. It was directly facing the door, and was bursting at the seams with noticeably well-worn books. They had to have belonged to whoever Rantaro is because Nagito didn’t have any books with him when they arrived.

After taking in first impressions Monaca followed Nagito inside, and to his bed. It was similar to her and Kotoko’s room. The walls were off-white, and it was split into two sections. Both him and Rantaro had green bedding, but Nagito’s was a deep, almost moss green, while Rantaro’s was a very pale green. Two wardrobes, and two dressers. But something different was that on Nagito’s side of the room there was a green soft rocking chair. On Rantaro’s side there was a desk, and a chair with things like maps on the desk.

On the bed, Nagito ushered Monaca toward him, and she quickly complied. After plopping down on her back, similar to the older boy she turned over to face him.

“How do you like it? He was obviously very happy, even though he was being his own awkward self that would have made Monaca cringe, she couldn’t help but be happy, and smiled back at him, “Monaca loves it. Monaca loves it so much!”

Saying the words out loud made Monaca think. She loved it here. But this wasn’t permanent. It couldn’t be. Most likely, society would become stable again sooner or later…And people would start getting charged for crimes. That’s how the real world works. How long could a peaceful, happy go lucky center, like this one seemed to be, realistically last in a progressing world?

She desperately wants to just blurt out that this isn’t permanent, so how long are we going to pretend like it is? But instead lets out a deep sigh as she sits up.

“Hey, You wanna play poker or something?” Nagito asks, “It’s going to be a while until dinner, and we both have nothing to do.” Of course Monaca would never turn down a chance to sharpen her skills at mind games. It’s the only thing that ever really gave her a sense of power. So it was a definite yes.

“Monaca wins again! That means that Monaca is still the reigning champ of Monaca an’ Nagito poker!” The green haired girl congratulated herself while doing a jig that made Nagito laugh along. He was fine with losing, as long as he got to see her smile.

The little girl was in the middle of erratically waving her arms in the air when the door slowly creaked open. Her face went from proud to mortified quicker than 1 +1 = 2. Slowly she walked to Nagito’s bed without turning around.

“Uhh..Sorry. Am I interrupting?” A deep, slow voice asked in a confused tone.

“Oh! No not at all! We were just playing poker. Come on in.” Nagito welcomes the person in. The mystery person that Monaca hasn’t seen with her back turned was shuffling with the books on the bookshelf before picking one of them, and walking closer to the duo.

After a long minute of silence, the person starts speaking smoothly, “Mmm…And who is this Nagito?” He gestures to the green-haired child, still standing stiffly with her back turned. But Monaca still refused to move or talk.

“This is Monaca,” Nagito grabbed her by the arm to turn her to face the other person in the room. Even then her eyes remain glued to the floor, “Say hi Monaca.” Nagito instructs firmly, yet you can hear a soft smile in his voice. Monaca just raised her hand weakly before it returned to its place, firmly by her side.

The person could tell that the girl was shaken up, so they just smiled, and extended their hand for a shake. Monaca shakily returned it, and forced her eyes up to see what this person looked like.

The first thing that she noticed was his hair. Green like her, but not as vibrant. His eyes were also light green, and they looked soft. The next thing that her attention was drawn to was the guy’s soft, and warm hands. He was oddly familial, and comforting.

“Well aren’t you adorable!” The guy splayed his hand, and went to pat Monaca’s head, but quickly recoiled as she flinched. But he didn’t stop smiling, and just continued to talk, “Well, my name is Rantaro.” That name felt comforting in Monaca’s ear for some reason. “I can’t wait to get to know you more, Monaca!”

Rantaro went to sit on his bed on the other side of the room, and started reading the book he picked up earlier. Monaca was able to see the title now. “The Human Brain, and Psyche”. Was he studying to be a psychologist? Well, it doesn’t really matter to Monaca, so she just dismissed it.

“Oh right, Nagito! If you aren’t ready don’t feel pressure. I have wellness Monday’s planned for the next 2 months. But make sure you keep up with the reading.” Rantaro interjected into the quiet room, and Nagito gave a big thumbs up. “Great Rantaro! Will do!”

For a little while the room was quiet with Rantaro reading, and Nagito and Monaca playing silent poker. But Monaca wouldn’t, or couldn’t allow herself to feel relaxed, even in perfect harmony, such as this. Hearing even the lightest foot step outside, and even the smallest increase in the sound of Nagito or Rantaro’s breathing would put her on edge.

But it was still good; She’s never felt so safe. Not even with Junko.

“Okay.” Rantaro’s sudden exclamation made Monaca jump, “It’s 5:15, so I think we should start heading to the dining hall.” As he made that statement he stood up, and made his way over to Nagito’s bed.

Monaca stiffens up when the green-haired boy holds his hand out, but she accepts hesitantly. The trio quickly departed the Koala house, and started making their way to the dining hall.

As they walked in silence, Monaca started to think.

‘Rantaro doesn’t know about me, does he? He’s oblivious. But of course, he’s going to learn eventually.” She couldn’t hide the cringe that showed on her face as she thought about what would happen when he found out that she was a horrible person. The nasty things he would say about her, the looks of disgust he would throw her way whenever he could. It wouldn’t be anything new, but it would hurt.

But that led her to another thought. Why should she care? She just met this man, so why should him hating her make her worried? Something’s been feeling off ever since she got here. Maybe it was the birthday cake.

But she just had to shake it off. It didn’t matter. Nothing matters to Monaca!

“Owie…Monaca. You’re crushing my hand.” Rantaro groans, but also laughs at the same time, causing Monaca to immediately let go, and back away from him. He playfully shook his head before grasping his hand and feigning a distraught reaction.

“Ahh! Monaca! Do you have a grudge against my hand, or something?” He was just joking, but Monaca stood still, unable to speak a word. He just laughed it off, before taking her hand again, and continuing to walk.

She didn’t want to reach the dining hall. She didn’t want everyone to know who she was. She just wanted to fade out of existence. Why did she ever leave the comfort of space? The only people she’d have to worry about bumping into were the people on the ISS. Why did she still want to live? After all that has happened…

Of course, Monaca, Nagito, and Rantaro reached the dining hall not long after she finished her thoughts. Like lunch time, there were a whole bunch of people, but they were going into the building, instead of lining up outside of it. She didn’t know how to feel being in a confined space with all of these people. The last time she was surrounded by so many people was when she last addressed the Monokuma kids, and that was almost a year ago.

Once they entered the building they saw almost a dozen tables with different people around them. Some, she recognized from various places, and others were complete strangers.

“This way Monaca.” The little girl was subconsciously following Nagito, but she was pulled in a different direction by Rantaro, but as soon as she noticed she dug her feet into the floor, “Where are we going?” The hint of panic that was in Monaca’s voice made Rantaro quick to get down to her level and explain.

“You are going over to the Cub table, and me and Nagito are going to sit at the Koala table.” He was soft-spoken to encourage Monaca to calm down, and more importantly, not make a scene.

“Why can’t I sit with Nagito?” The whine in Monaca’s voice made him cringe. But not because it necessarily annoyed him, it was just almost identical to the way his youngest sister used to whine. “Because, at dinner we sit with our housemates. Please just sit with them for right now, and if you don’t like it you can sit with Nagito. Okay?”

Monaca did not respond verbally, but she stopped tensing up, and let Rantaro walk her to the cub table, where her former comrades were sitting. As soon as they approached the table they stopped talking and laughing. Just like her family. She knew it. They hate her.

“So. I’m sure you all know Monaca, she’ll be joining you at this table.” Rantaro sounded very enthusiastic about this, he didn’t want Monaca to feel awkward by telling them to make sure they were nice, and didn’t pressure her to talk or anything. It didn’t help.

“We know who she is, Taro!” Kotoko chimed in first, immediately followed by Masaru, “Yeah, we’ve been waiting for her!” They both showed Monaca slight smiles to make her more comfortable, but it might have had the opposite effect.

“I designed the chair especially for Monaca…” A boy that wouldn’t have been recognizable at all, if it weren’t for his distinct voice, stated proudly.

“It really was foolish of you to think we wouldn’t know who Monaca was, we’ve been preparing for her arrival for months now.” Nagisa said with a side eye to the green haired-boy. But one thing stuck with Monaca. They had been preparing for her for a month! But she only knew she would be here when she got here. They told all of the other kids, but Nagito didn’t even mention the gravity of the situation during the over three hour trip they took to get here. That is absurd.

“Well then, I will leave Monaca to you guys. Talk, get acquainted, have fun. Remember there will be a film showing after dinner at 7:00” With that Rantaro was off to the Koala table. Nagito was there as well, and some odd looking man with a gray streak in his hair, and a chubby guy with black hair. And she was left with the other children. The people who might possibly hate her most in the entire world.

“Hi Monaca!” Kotoko initiated a conversation, but Monaca wasn’t even able to make eye contact with any of the other children at the table. “I know that things are complicated,” Nagisa continued, “but we’re all happy that you’re here.”

They all could see that she was too nervous to talk, so they left it alone, and continued to talk about other things. Like what movie was going to play tonight.

For Monaca, everything started blending together. All of the words and sounds. The sight was something familiar. She has been in this situation many times. Lots of people, together, and her, unable to talk, unable to get out. The Towa’s would gather together with other influential Japanese families. And Monaca, always the outcast. The eyesore. She had to take everything, everyone said about her in silence.

It was always the same. The children around her would laugh. The adults would turn their noses up, and talk amongst themselves about how much of a mistake Monaca was.

“He should have just sent her to the orphanage,” A woman, notorious for always having something to say about Monaca whenever she was around, “She better realize how lucky she has it. Unwanted children are normally left to fend for themselves on the street.” Monaca’s face twitched as the words started getting under her skin. But she just needed to keep quiet.

‘What did she even know? She doesn’t see when papa hits Monaca, or when Big Brother comes into her room at night.’ Monaca scrunched up her knows as the thoughts came to her about how horrible everyone was.

A child with blond hair walked up to Monaca, they looked just a little bit older than Monaca, who was just 6. He towered over her, and got close to her face.

“My friend made a mess,” The boy pointed to a table a little ways away where there were several other boys were throwing veggies at each other. “You need to clean it.” That statement made Monaca’s eyebrows jump. Normally she just ignored when people talked to her, but this made her respond.

“Why should Monaca clean it?” The little girl's voice was incredulous as she glared at the older boy who only gave a smug smile.

“Because you’re a servant,” he grabbed the collar on Monaca’s dress, “Someone like you, hanging around the Towa family can only be a servant.” He started dragging the girl towards the table, as she struggled and tried to protest as quietly as possible.

When the two got to the table the children’s attention all turned to them, and the blonde boy started to talk again. “Hey guys. I bought the Towa girl over to clean up your mess, as a servant. But what do you guys think? She looks a little hungry.” They all got these evil looks on their faces, and a boy with red hair spoke up. “Yeah, I think she could use some more food.”

The older boy wrapped his arms around Monaca torso, rendering her practically immoble as her feet were lifted slightly off the ground.

First a bread roll hit her nose, and that made her yelp in surprise of the impact. They all laughed a simultaneous wicked laugh at Monaca’s fear. Meat and veggies left residue on her face, and in her hair that her father wanted perfect today. She knew that her father would be furious about the state of her hair, so she started wailing.

“What?” The blonde haired boy said in mock confusion, “I thought she would be happy getting more food. Maybe she’s thirsty.”

All of the boys took that as a hint, and went to the table. Each of them had a cup full of various liquids. Monaca started kicking, and swearing knowing what they planned on doing. But her fighting only led to the blonde boy kicking her so hard on the back of the leg that she screamed.

This alerted the adults that were on the other side of the room, and they started making their way over to where the children were.

Before they could get to them, the boys all took turns pouring their drinks on Monaca’s head. They relished in the pain they caused the girl as she silently cried with her head hanging down in shame.

Suddenly she was let go, and she fell to the ground.

She could see the legs of adults, and heard them talking to the children. Monaca was spacing out for most of the conversation, but then something that one of the boys saud caught her attention, and made her heart sink.

“It was her idea. She walked over to us, and said she wanted to have a food fight.” That sealed her fate. All of their faces went to Monaca. The men looked her over with angry disturbed faces, while the woman had looks of utter disgust. And her fathers face was one of pure, utter rage.

She couldn't even stand up before her father snatched her arm, nearly dislocating it, and walked Monaca to a door that led to the hallway. He was walking so fast that Monaca couldn’t even walk, her feet were just being dragged along the floor as she tried to regain her footing.

They came upon a door that Monaca’s father slammed open before throwing the girl into the room. Monaca hoped that he would close the door and leave, but to her terror, he entered the room, and locked the door behind him.

The first thing he did was give her a hard, resounding slap across the face that sent her tumbling to the floor. She didn’t have time to breath before he gripped the front of her color, and brought his face right up to her.

“Did I not raise you to behave like a human?” Monaca sniffled before nodding her head, “Yes sir, you did.” Monaca’s voice quivered as she awaited more assaults. But none came.

“Y’know. I gave you everything. You have a nice house, you go to a nice school. You have great clothes, and I made sure your hair looked nice today. But you had to ruin it.” Her fathers voice was scarily deep as he turned around and started walking towards the door.

“You make me sick.” He opened the door, and he was gone. There was a click, indicating that he locked the door from the outside lock. Monaca went to open the door, and sure enough, it wouldn’t budge. She was going to be here all night. At least there was a window.

She sat down in a corner, and in the heat of a moment clenched her fist so hard that she thought she might break them.

“Is that blood?” Kotoko nearly shouted, and when Monaca looked over she saw a horrified expression on the girl's face. In seconds, Maki was standing by the table with a concerned demeanor. She got to kotoko’s level, and they exchanged some whispers. Monaca gulped when she saw the pink-haired girl point at her. What had she done now?

Maki quickly walked over to Monaca, and grabbed her fist. To Monaca’s shock there was blood all over her palm, dripping down her wrist. Maki grabbed Monaca’s shoulders gently, and began talking in a low voice.

“It’s okay Monaca, take some deep breaths.” Maki’s words confused Monaca until she noticed her own breathing, and how fast it was. “Do you want to go outside?” Monaca, feeling awkward with the other children staring at her, felt like she was going to cry, and quickly nodded her head.

She grabbed Maki’s extended hand, and they made their way to the door that led to the stoop of the dining hall. She hardly ever felt this level of anxiety before she came here. To her horror she felt her face get full as tears streamed down her cheeks. She did whatever she could to stop herself from full on sobbing.

“Monaca. What do you need?” Maki rubbed the little girl's hair soothingly, trying to get a response to no avail, “It’s going to be okay. You're safe. You're safe” The older girl tried to wrap her arms around Monaca’s shoulders, but she immediately backed off when Monaca violently flinched away.

As this continued all Monaca could think was that she was vulnerable, and she was feeling horrible. She cried in front of everyone, they knew that she was weak. And as these thoughts continued there was always an underlying thought.

“This is so humiliating.” She gasped in a whispered tone. Maki raised her eyebrows in confusion as she didn’t understand what Monaca was saying. She thought to press forward, but then Monaca broke down even more after she spoke, so she left it alone.

The two sat there for 15 minutes in silence until Maki decided to check in with Monaca again.

“How are you feeling?” She looked over at the little girl whose face was glued to the hands in her lap. Her shoulders shrugged as her face lowered more, “Embarrassed.” The girl choked out the words as she gave a slight glance to Maki who still smiled sweetly.

“Well…We were going to introduce you to everyone, but…You don’t have to go back in there if you don’t want to.” Maki hesitated because she knew that she needed to stop eating by herself, because she wasn’t going to make connections and thrive if she was constantly isolated. It would be great if they could know what triggered Monaca, so that they could be prepared, and aware. But for now they would just have to tread very lightly, until Monaca was in therapy.

“Monaca…doesn't want to go back inside…Today.” The green-haired child spoke softly, and exercised noticeable caution of her words. With that Maki stood up so abruptly that Monaca flinched, but she didn’t stop giving the girl a small smile. And she quickly disappeared into the doors of the dining hall. Leaving Monaca alone with her thoughts.

She just wanted to fall off the face of the earth…Again. It’s hard to think about her life, but Monaca remembers everything. Or almost everything. But her memories never came to her in rushes like that, and they’ve never scared her as much as they did since she arrived here.

Maki emerged once again from the dining hall doors, and she was holding two plates. As she was sitting down Monaca noticed that it was a rice, beef, and egg bowl. And it was steaming hot. She would often be served cold, and soggy beef bowls when she lived in the Towa residence; it always made her want to puke. This was bringing up mixed feelings, because it was hot, and looked good; but it also reminded her of those horrible meals.

Memories of a time her face was shoved in vomit suddenly hit her, causing her to gasp, which, in turn, made Maki jump a little. It was probably the hundredth time she was served a horrible beef bowl, and it was just too much for her to stomach. Her brother, who was the one who gave it to her, was pissed. So he retaliated by holding her face in her own sickness. She had to hold back a gag from the memory.

Maki’s face was turned down a little as she took note of Monaca‘s reaction, “Do you not like beef bowls?” She did her best not to sound judgmental, but Monaca started to stare at her knees with an embarrassed grimace on her face. The little girl's mouth opened, but slammed itself shut as she put her face in her hands.

It took a minute for her to lower her hands, and once she did she just shook her head. But of course, Maki wasn’t able to gauge what that meant just based on that. “So, you don’t like beef bowls?”

Monaca suddenly shakes her head back and forth before shouting, “No, Monaca doesn’t!” The sudden outburst left Maki’s mouth agape, but Monaca continued to speak, “Monaca doesn’t like it, but Monaca can try this one. It looks hot and delicious.” Maki didn’t know exactly how to respond to that, but she pushed a smile. “Well, that's a really good Monaca, I’m happy that you’re going to try it.”

Soon, a spoonful of TeruTeru’s concoction of tender juicy beef, soft eggs, and fluffy rice, topped with chopped spring onions was being brought to Monaca’s mouth. Once she got a whiff of it she immediately noted that it didn't have the wet, and stale stench that she was used to. It was complex, yet gentle. Everything melded together in such a sweet way. She was still scared, her head went to the way the horrific taste would burn her tongue. And if she didn’t want to get punished, she would need to suck it up, and push all of it down, and keep her disgust bottled up until either her father, or big brother left her alone.

She conjured up the strength to put the beef in her mouth, and started chewing. Her fear dissipated as she chewed, and realized that it was freaking delicious. She couldn’t help the huge smile that stretched on her face. She’s never felt so elated eating food before. Maybe it was the 180 of the horrible expectations compared to the beautiful reality. Soon, she found herself scarfing down bite after bite of the supernatural meal.

Maki couldn’t help but laugh to herself at Monaca’s complete change in her thoughts toward beef bowls. She herself started to indulge in the glorious bowl herself.

Soon after they both got a second, and third beef bowl, and were left extremely satisfied, and happy. And the silence came on quickly, and was very noticeable. They could talk about what happened in the dining hall. But she didn’t want to make Monaca go deeper into her shell, so she stuck to a more neutral topic.

“Y’know. There is gonna be a movie showing today. My Neighbor Totoro.” Maki looked over and saw a silly smile on Monaca’s face, “I know, it’s typical and overdone by now. But it’s a great movie.” Maki didn’t mention that Ghibli movies are some of the only movies that they have access to. But Monaca only laughed, “It’s okay! Monaca loves Totoro!”

The door to the dining hall slowly opened, and a face emerged. It looked around with concern before it laid upon Maki with Monaca.

“Oh, there you are.” The person's voice was soft, and a little squeaky, but also familiar. As Monaca observed him more she took note of his grayish-white hair, and his soft features. As well as the prominent dark circles under his eyes, pale complexion. “I’m getting ready to head over to the enrichment center to set up the screening.”

Maki nods before she asks a question, “Can you take the other kids with you, we’re gonna go now,” She motions towards the little girl next to her. The person nods their head, and Maki gives a quick thanks before they head back inside.

The child caregiver stands up with a yawn, “We’re gonna go now, okay Monaca.” She extends her hand to the girl who slowly accepts. A little bit into their journey Monaca begins to speak, “What’s the enrichment center?” Of course she knew what enrichment meant, but she was a little confused about how enrichment could be turned into a ‘center’.

Maki gladly starts to explain, “The Enrichment center is simply put, a place for enrichment.” Once Maki said that Monaca felt embarrassed, her shaking head drew the older girl's attention, “What is it?” Monaca’s hand rubs her shoulder before she starts to speak in a low voice, “Sorry. It was a silly question, I should have known.”

Maki looked at Monaca’s frowny face before continuing, “Well, this specific Enrichment Center offers things like academic classes for the adults here, and also different classes like CPR classes, singing classes, and art classes.” Maki remembered that Monaca was going to start classes soon, so she took the time to mention that she would be having classes, but not in the enrichment center. But in the child center with the other Warriors of Hope.

Monaca didn’t talk much anymore, and they walked slowly to their destination. The older girl wondered if Monaca would appreciate Maki holding her hand, but once she saw her squeezing them together she figured that she would appreciate being left alone at the moment.

Soon they arrived at a large hall inside of the Enrichment Center, with a huge projector. “We can sit together,” Maki started hesitantly, as she didn’t want to over step at all, “Or you can sit with Nagito…or the other kids. Or…” Monaca interjected into the empty space Maki created, and voiced her opinion, “Monaca wants to sit with Nagito.”

So the pair waited for Nagito. Groups of people began to pour in, and fill up the seats of the showing room. But Monaca didn’t spot Nagito, so she got a little antsy. As she frantically scanned the room almost 20 times Maki took notice, “It’s okay Monaca. Nagito is definitely coming soon.” Her voice was calm and collected, though she was not 100 percent sure, it would be 100 percent strange if he decided to ditch.

On cue, in came Nagito with his infamous smile as he waved at the pair. He quickly strutted over, “Hahaha, I’m happy you guys are here!” Before anyone could do anything, Nagito grabbed both of their hands, “Come on! We can all sit together!” He was able to pull them for approximately three steps before Maki stopped him, “Well Nagito, of course I’d like that, but I need to sit with the children.” She was being gentle, but he was being equally as persistent,

“Monaca’s a child.” Maki couldn't help but laugh at his delivery, it was like a serious joke.

“Yes she is, but you're going to sit with Monaca, because she wants to sit with you, and I’m going to look after the rest of the children. Do you understand?” She was trying to be as straightforward and kind, while also recovering from her laugh attack. But Nagito appeared to be receptive, “Yes, I understand. You will sit and watch the warriors of hope, and I will sit with, and watch Monaca. Got it.” He got most of it, but Maki felt the need to point out that he could also sit with other people, Monaca is just going to be with him.

Nagito was relieved, and the conversation came to a resounding end as the other warriors of hope came in. Maki took them to their seats, and Nagito sat with the other members of the Koala house. And soon after, Maki was joined by three other people. But Monaca didn’t notice.

The room became more and more full of people, and in turn, it filled with conversation. Monaca didn’t really know what to do, so she just sat quietly, and listened to what Nagito was talking to his roommates about.

Suddenly, the room went pretty much completely dark, and it filled with the recognizable theme of My Neighbor Totoro, there were slight murmurs of excitement, or people expressing how bored they are of Studio Ghibli. But to Monaca, Studio Ghibli could never become tiring, especially ghibli movies like My Neighbor Totoro.

The theme of the movie was beautiful, and made her want to go to the countryside. And the mother, even though she didn’t see her children very often, was so loving and sweet. And their father was kind and gracious, even when they weren’t doing exactly what he wanted. But Monaca’s all time favorite part of the movie was the Totoro’s, and their world.

As Mei started to crawl through the bushes Monaca’s eyes widened in excitement, and then she fell in. That great big Troll was the girl's most favorite, and she wanted so badly to have him be real, and to help her when she needed it. And to be able to live in that hole, away from the rest of society was all Monaca couldn’t think about sometimes when she was younger.

And Monaca always loved when the Totoro’s would help Sosuke save Mei. The movie is just all around perfect.

But all too quickly the ending theme came and went. The room was pitch black before the lights came back on, and everyone clapped. The person that talked to Maki on the stoop of the dining hall appeared in front of the screen with a mic, “Thank you all for watching the showing of My Neighbor Totoro!” Monaca jumped as uproarious applause and cheers filled the room, “Our second screening will begin in 15 minutes.”

She was just about to ask Nagito what the second screening was, when someone appeared behind her, “Hi Monaca,” Maki got on Monaca’s sitting level, “We’re going to go to the Cub House now.” Monaca took a moment to respond, as she was still confused, “What’s the second screening?”

Maki stifled a sigh, “It’s a film screening for the adults to watch while the kids are getting ready for bed.” It was good that Monaca was asking questions, but sometimes it’s so tiring to come up with answers. “Now, let’s go.”

Maki walked the five children to the Cub House. Monaca was on edge, because it was almost pitch black, save for the few lamp posts, and lights being emanated from the enrichment center. Of course, it isn’t abnormal to be on edge traveling in the dark, especially for Monaca who was, barely a week ago, living without help on the streets of Towa city.

But she felt better since Maki was there. The green-haired girl started to notice that Maki was starting to have a calming effect on her. Slowly, she moved closer and closer towards Monaca until she was basically touching her. Maki noticed, but didn’t do anything, or give it much thought at all.

A couple of minutes later, the group arrived at the Cub House, and things started to fall into a rhythm.

“Kotoko, take a bath.”

“Nagisa, take a bath.”

“Jotaro, take a bath.”

“No, Masaru! You need to take a bath today. No more negotiating.

The whole time, Monaca was sitting in the common room. Watching all of the commotion. When she was younger it was just finish dinner, take a 5 minute shower, and study until you fall asleep. So she felt pretty out of place just sitting there, especially with nothing to read. Even when she was living at HQ, she would finalize her plans until she couldn’t stay awake.

Since Maki said that Monaca could stay in the common room she wasn’t sure if that was an order, or just something she said. But, to be safe, she stayed put. But it was quickly approaching 9 O’ clock, which meant curfew based on the rules on the wall. She decided that just meant that she would be able to go to her, and Kotoko’s room.

At 8:50 Monaca was about to fall off of the stool she was perched on, that’s how tired she was. But just as she was about to give up, and go to bed, Maki walked up to her, and sat by her on the floor near the stool, and smiled up at the tired little girl.

“You can brush your teeth right now. Do you want to take a bath?” Of course, after not bathing for at least a week, (plus, who knows if she’s bathed while out and about in Towa city for weeks.) It was preferable that she took a bath as soon as possible, but it would only be detrimental to force her right now.

Monaca didn’t have to think deeply after heating the word bath to decide she didn’t want to take a bath here…At least not now. She shook her head at Monaca so quickly she almost gave herself whiplash.

“Okay,” Maki stood up, and walked to the bathroom door, “I’ll show you everything you need to know about the bathroom.”

Inside the bathroom, naturally, there was a bathtub, a showering area, a toilet, and a sink. Under the sink was a mountain of washcloths, hand towels, and body towels. As well as a sectional container with toothpaste, soap, and many other hygiene products. On top of the sink was a cup with 4 toothbrushes, and a sticky toothpaste tube, which Maki shook her head at, “Those kids!” Monaca tried to smile at her attempt at being funny, but found it difficult as she instead yawned.

With that reaction, Maki opened the mirror, and pulled out a green toothbrush that had a cap labeled “Monaca” in small font. Once she handed it to Monaca she told her that she can start doing whatever she needs to do to be ready for bed, and she’ll be back in a couple of minutes.

Not having much of a routine, she brushed her teeth. And that was it. If she had a hairbrush she might’ve decided to brush her hair that, at this point, was extremely fizzy, and knotted. But she didn’t, so she was left wondering if she should go to bed, or just wait for Maki.

Several minutes of just looking around the pastel blue bathroom awkwardly, and finally, Maki reappeared holding some clothes. “These are some pajamas, and things.” The older girl put them on the toilet lid before continuing, “If you need help I can stay, but if not, when you’re finished with everything you can go to bed, and I’ll be there shortly.”

Again, Maki didn’t want to seem forceful, but she also wanted to get a once over of any concerning bruises, scars, or other wounds that could help provide insight into Monaca’s situation. But she just needed to let things go with the flow for now, and let Monaca choose what was most comfortable.

“I don’t need help,” The little girl started with a deadpan voice, accompanied by a little glare, indirectly telling Maki to get out. She quickly obliged, and went to say goodnight to the boys.

It only took Monaca two minutes to get her PJ’s on, and once she did, she was ready for bed. So she did what Maki said, and went to the bedroom that she shared with Kotoko. But once she met the eyes of the pink haired girl a pang of anxiety hit her right in the heart.

She was going to be sharing a room with Kotoko. Sleeping is one of the most vulnerable things a human can do, and she was going to be doing it in the vicinity of someone who she wronged on such a deep level. It all came back to here. She did not want to do this.

“Okay! Good night boys, sweet dreams!” Maki exited the door that was opposite of the one she was standing at currently, her face scrunches up in confusion seeing Monaca just standing there, but she quickly walks up to her with a big smile.

“Are you ready for bed, Monaca?” Still stunned by the thoughts swirling in her head, it takes several moments of Monaca staring up at Maki before she is able to timidly nod her head in the affirmative. Since Monaca made no attempts at moving, Maki grabbed her hand, and walked her to the green bed.

When Monaca was in the bed Maki turned her attention to Kotoko, who was waiting patiently for her nighttime routine to come to a close.

Monaca watched in silence as the two other girls talked about various things, like what she enjoyed most about the day, what she hoped to dream about, and what she hoped would happen tomorrow. All while gently brushing the pink-haired girl's hair with her hand. Finally, Kotoko rested her head on the pillow, and Maki planted a soft kiss on the girl's temple.

Once Maki turned to her, Monaca jumped as she realized she’d been aggressively starting with furrowed eyebrows. She didn’t know if Maki noticed, but it was still an awkward thing to do.

She started subconsciously ringing her hand when Maki started towards her slowly. “How was your day?” Monaca was temporarily stricken dumb, and didn’t know how to answer the question, but eventually she was able to get out, “It was good…” Of course, the day wasn’t really that good, but she wasn’t in the mood to rehash every bad thing that happened to her.

“Okay. Is your bed okay? Does it feel nice?” Maki tries to turn away from a dead end conversation, but Monaca just nodded. So Maki went into a different topic. She began to explain that tomorrow was Mental Health Monday, and that meant there isn’t that much to do tomorrow. Pretty much no one has to do anything, but that raised a question for Monaca of how they would get food. Not that she would be against skipping meals tomorrow, but she was just curious about it. Maki was happy to explain that after the second movie screening, Lots of the adults would pitch in to prepare grab and go meals and snacks for tomorrow.

Then the older girl just explained how the gate in front would be closed, so that the people who protect the entrance can get a break as well. There won’t be any classes, and it will just be a chill day to rest and have a full day of doing whatever you want.

Monaca didn’t want to question Maki further, but in her mind she just wondered why they would practically shut down the entire center for a day. And she was too sleepy to think more about it.

Suddenly, Maki reached her hand out to caress Monaca’s, but without thinking Monaca recoiled, and was instantly horrified that she offended her. But Maki only smiled, and stood up. She patted the little girl's pillow, indicating for her to rest her head on it, and she complied.

With that, she made her way to the door, “Okay! Good night girls, sweet dreams!” She dimmed the lights, and then she was gone.

Monaca looked up at the ceiling as she listened to the sound of the night. Crickets, the whistling wind…And the occasionally deep sigh of Kotoko. She wondered if the other girl was sleeping, or if she was just staring at the ceiling like her. But then, she heard a loud throat clearing sound, and heard a shift on the other side of the room.

She was completely still with fear as she knew that meant Kotoko moved, and she didn’t know why.

“Are you awake Monaca?” Her light voice reverberated through the still room as Monaca sat up in her bed looking across the room at the dim girl. “Yes, Monaca is Kotoko. Do you need something?” Monaca didn’t want to show any emotion because she didn’t know what would backfire. You could say that it worked.

“How are you liking it here, if you want to talk about it?” Monaca was having mixed feelings, because she loved being here, but also she was feeling close to her worst sometimes, but she decided to be positive, “Monaca really likes this room, and Monaca likes Nagito’s room, so Monaca’s liking it here just fine.”

The outline of Kotkoo’s smile was visible to Monaca, and in turn made her smile. And Kotoko continued to say, “I helped pick out some of your shoes, clothes, and toys!” Kotoko covered her mouth, she didn’t mean to scream, but she was too excited. “I hope you like it.”

Monaca nodded quickly, “I love all of it. Thank you…And I'm sorry.” Monaca had to push that last bit out, but it needed to be said sooner or later, and it’s better to just let Kotoko get all of her hate out, if she ever could.

Kotoko sighed, “Monaca. I-I appreciate your apology. And now, I can say that I forgive you…But we still need to work on things. That’s what Maki say’s at least. But we can talk about it tomorrow.” Monaca’s heart fluttered, but in a good way. Kotokok for the most part forgave her, and wants to work on things. That’s awesome! But in the end, the only thing she could do was nod, the silhouette of her hair waving around was the key indicator to Kotoko that she was nodding to say ‘yes.”

“It’s gonna be fine Monaca. We can start over.”

Chapter Text

It’s been a little over a month since Monaca arrived at the center on her birthday, and things were going okay. She’s been enjoying doing school that is tailored to her specific wants, and needs. And therapy has been okay. Overall, it has been a very fun, and enjoyable time.

Monaca has been spending time, as a group with the other children, with Maki’s supervision. But it’s mostly just been the others talking, mostly amongst themselves, and she listens and chimes in occasionally. She’s just worried about saying something wrong, so she’s decided that it’s better to keep her mouth shut for the most part.

She’s been able to meet everyone in the center in this time. Including Toko Fukawa, and Komaru Naegi. To the girls utter shock, they were very calm, level-headed, and…Kind about everything. Toko teaches them Japanese every Tuesday, and Komaru helps to supervise them at times.

Another person that she met was Aoi Asahina. Older sister to Yuta Asahina. When they met the first thing she did was give her a tight hug, and then proceeded to lecture her for hours. “Frankly, I just wanna smack you across the face” And then, “You need to care more about yourself, and your surroundings” and then sections of her scolding would end with, “Yuta’s soul is going to need to live on through you…All five of you, and me. We cannot let this happen ever.”

Monaca did not resent Aoi for scolding her. She would expect to be punched, kicked, and choked. And at the very least be hated by her for forever. But no, she just scolded her, and put the responsibility of keeping Yuta alive through her, and not to let his death go to waste. It has to mean something. But it also makes sense, she had many months of intense therapy that would help her. Unfortunately, due to the state of the world, and the future foundation she needed to accept his death, and work with the children for the greater good.

But there was a time for everything, and a place for everything. It was a plus, and a minus for her. But she was going to have to adjust.

Monaca buckled her black shoes that complimented her outfit that consisted of gray shorts, and a short sleeve button up with a peter pan collar, and a gray tie. Her hair was adorned with a red bow. She was especially looking forward to Japanese today because they get to share their poems to the class.

As the lil’ Ultimate Homeroom being a charismatic people person was where she shined.

“Hello Monaca,” Kotoko skipped to Monaca before grabbing her hand, and twirling around with her. The pink haired girl wore a pair of pink heels with mini wedges, a pair of pink shorts, a button-up similar to Monica's, and a pink tie. “I’m so excited for the poem reading today! Let’s hurry up, and get to breakfast.”

With that, the two girls were out of the door, and running to the dining hall. But then, they were effectively blocked by Imposter, “No running.” His large physique, and deep voice stopped them immediately, and they began to slowly stroll to the dining hall.

They arrived, and were hit with the smell of something sweet in the air. They quickly went to their table, and took their seats. The two started to speculate on what they would do in Japanese class after they all read their poems.

Kotoko had many ideas, “Story writing, reading time, calligraphy practice, Kanji studying, or a pizza party!” That last one made Monaca laugh. Moments later Mkai arrived at their table, “Where are the boys?” To that question they both shrugged their shoulders. They hadn’t seen them from the time they woke up, and they weren’t really that concerned.

Maki left, and Kotoko started to talk about her most recent dreams.

After a while Teruteru, Kirumi, and Kokich came with their rolling tables containing trays that carried the breakfast of the day. In one, there were these thick, fluffy, buttery waffles that you only had to look at to tell how soft, and great they would be. Accompanied by the waffles were cheesy eggs, salty and crispy bacon, and fresh strawberries. TeruTeru, and Kirumi always came out with the best.

A little while after the two girls were served, and started eating, Maki walked in with three dirty boys behind her. There was no explanation, the child caregiver just took them to the table, and then went to eat her own breakfast. Only then did Masuru explain what happened.

Maki was due to come and have quick check-ins any minute now. Kotoko, and Monaca were in their bedroom getting ready to sleep, as were Nagisa, and Jataro. But Masaru failed to arrive along with the rest of them after dinner. It was Mental Health Monday, so there wasn’t much going on at the center. After dinner, normally the kids just go to the cabin. But Masaru stayed outside, doing who knows what.

9 O’ clock was approaching fast, and on Monday’s the children were expected to be in the cabin no later than 8:30 P.M. so that they can be in bed by 9. Yet, Masaru either forgot, or disregarded this rule.

Soon it was 8:57 and someone came bursting through the door of Cub House panting like they were running for their lives. It caught the attention of all of the children who quickly made their way to the common room to see Masaru sweaty, dirty, and out of breath.

“I made it! I made it!” The red haired boy says between heavy gasps, “Maki hasn’t come by yet, right?” They all shook their heads, but Nagisa was the most openly disappointed.

“Masaru. You need to be more aware. It’s already 2 minutes to nine, and we're supposed to be in bed!” Nagisa’s arms were crossed around his chest as he glared at his friend. Masaru only gave a tired laugh, “Come on Nagisaaa. You know I would have made it anyway.” The red haired boy went to pat Nagisa on the shoulder, but was only met with being disgustedly jerked away from, “you’re all sweaty, and gross. Take a shower!”

Masaru only scoffed, and went to kick around the ball he had left on the floor, “I don’t need to shower today Nagisa.” As he continued to play with the ball the others got bored, and decided to go to their rooms, and then it was 9:01.

At 9:01 the door creaked open. They all stared like deer caught in the headlights as Maki peered in. A disapproving, and incredulous smile came on the older girl's face as she fully opened the door, and stepped inside, “Aren’t all of you supposed to be in bed?” Then, her eyes fell on Masaru.

“And what were you doing young man?” She looked the messy boy up and down before rolling her eyes, “I’m not going to force you to take a bath today, but if you don’t take one now, you definitely will tomorrow.” She took the football from him, and put it into his designated chest.

She ushers the girls into their room where they do the final part of their nightly routine. What was your favorite thing that happened today? What do you want to dream about? What do you want to do tomorrow? Then a kiss for Kotoko. Maki and Monaca aren’t that close yet, but they high five each other at bedtime.

When she went back to the common room Maki asked Masaru if he planned on taking a bath, and she was met with a firm shake in the negatory. She told him that he needs to at least put on some clean pajamas, and get the dirt out of his hair.

So while he did that, Maki did the routine with Nagisa, and Jataro. Just in time, Masaru came into the room, and she was able to talk to him, and give him a light kiss good night. That wasn’t that great considering the fact that he was dirty. But still, she loved him.

Once she dimmed the light, and left Masaru perked right back up.

“Guys! There are BUNNIES, guys!” The red-haired boy shook with excitement, but Jataro, and especially not Nagisa, were half as interested. Nagisa was the one to speak up, “Okay Masaru, if there are bunnies tell Gundham tomorrow, and he’ll take care of it.”

But that horrified Masaru, “NOOO! What if he kills them, and then we have to EAT them! We have to get them ourselves, and set them free!”

And so, an argument ensued. First it was about whether or not the bunny should be left alone. Then it was about the morality of taking in wild animals as pets. That turned into an argument about whether eating meat was ethical or not. And that turned about species bias. You wouldn’t eat a dog, but you would eat a chicken! And in the end, somehow Masaru had convinced Nagisa, and Jataro to help him capture the bunnies, and bring them to Gundham. It was a compromise, but Nagisa was just so tired that he couldn’t argue anymore. (They were working on him not going relentlessly if he was tired.) And Jataro just went with the group, because why not.

At 4:30 A.M. Masaru shook the two other boys awake, and handed each of them a net. Nagisa tried to get out of it, as he thought the idea was terribly stupid, but you cannot argue with someone who is dead set on something. Last night they agreed, so here they all were.

After almost four hours of running, jumping, leaping, and slipping in the grass, wet, and muddy thanks to the morning dew–all to get some bunnies who clearly didn’t want to be caught–Maki found them. After she gently tore each of them a new one they were marched to the dinning hall. The bunny situation was left unresolved.

“And that's how it all happened!” Masaru declared with a puffed up chest. Nagisa glared at the table, and shook his head. “You know, all of that could have been avoided if you either left well enough alone, or just told Gundham.”

Masaru shrugged, “I still think it was fun.”

After breakfast everyone has things they need to do, all of them are things that will improve some kind of craft that can be used to better the world. For example, either building skills, or taking classes. Like Teruteru, and Kirumi. They work in the dining hall cooking, and serving others, which goes along with their ultimates. And the children attend regular classes, but also have time to work on their different skills. Acting in the case of Kotoko, research in the case of Nagisa, art in the case of Jataro, athletics in the case of Masaru, and robotics in the case of Monaca.

At the center, everyone can provide value.

The children return to the Cub House before classes so that they can get the poems that they’re going to read to the class. They’ve been working on them since Monaca arrived, and she is excited because she hopes it will make everyone happy.

All of the classes that the children have take place in the vicinity of the Child Center. So the four of them walked there together. Which was their usual routine, and per usual, Maki was sitting there ready to take roll. It wasn’t really to know where any of the children were, but it was to notice any trends, and report to the future foundation about where the kids are academically, and making sure they are getting the education they need.

Nevertheless, Maki pulled up the attendance tracker, and marked all of them here, and sent them inside to take their Japanese lesson. After they went inside the main room, they entered the classroom room where all of their classes were held, and Toko stood in the front of the room near the white board. But up there with her was Komaru, they've been practically inseparable since they met in Towa city.

“Hello everyone!” Toko said loudly, trying to bring in enthusiasm. But, due to Toko’s personality, it came off as a little nervously skittish. But the kids accepted it, and each returned enthusiastic greetings. And they also greet Komaru who stood with a giant smile next to Toko. She gave them all double hand waves before Toko continued.

The class went on smoothly. Everyone was able to share their poems, including Toko and Koamru who had secret poem’s to share with the kids. And once it was all over, they watched a short film of Ryota’s creation.

There was a child who was in a gray uniform. But, they had a rainbow pin on their collar. They were so proud, and happy that everyone noticed their keychain, and they could represent one of their favorite things, rainbows!

The school day was going super well for the child. Kids would gather around the child to look at the key chain, and ask questions about it. Teachers were very accepting, and nice about the key chain. Most of them anyways.

It was the final day of the class, and the child was beaming. They strode into class, and were just about to take their seat until they were blocked by an adult’s torso. “Why are you wearing that?!” The adults booming voice made the child gasp and shrink within themself. People started to stare as the adults' voices only grew. The child only grew more, and more shocked and confused. “It is disgusting that you’d wear something like that out in the open! At school?!”

The final blow shook the child to their very core. The adult snatched the pin right off the scared childs shirt, leaving a little hole where the pin was, right on their heart. The child couldn’t control their hiccups that quickly turned to loud sobbing.

All eyes were on the thoroughly humiliated little person as they broke down.

The child sank to the floor in absolute defeat. The adult scoffed at the poor thing, “you are a shameful child!”

The adult grabbed the child by the arm rather roughly, still in tears they were dragged to the desk, and plopped down in a jarring way. The adult walked away, still mumbling horrible things about the kid. And suddenly, everything started to fade, and blurr.

Images flashed of the child. A bright beginning; A happy child. Then a blue, and slouched child. A gray and stoic faced child. A gray and stoic faced child to a gray and stoic faced adult. 50 images showing the child change, and grow. But the faded aura was still the same.

One day, the child, all grown up, and getting on in age was helping their very elderly parents go through their old items. While they were going through a box full of odd papers, and a few small boxes they stumbled upon a very faded slip of paper, and a dingy plastic bag that was so worn with time that they couldn’t even see inside of it.

The writing on the paper, almost gone. What was clearly visible was almost completely illegible. The adult was able to make out several words, though.

“Horrible, Disobedient child, filthy, discipline, shameful parents.”

The adult grimaced at the harsh words. They turned their attention to the little baggie, and gently pulled it open. They gasped as their heart started beating more, and more rapidly. “Oh my…”

‘Oh my’ was all the adult could say as they stared at the rainbow key chain in their hand. They suddenly felt their heart become very big. Memories of the day that solidified their future came rushing back to them. The screaming. The humiliation. Becoming an outcast.

The adults' eyes spied interesting pictures in a plastic baggie in the same box. It was them. It was the images that flashed during the time jump, but of course, the adult hadn’t seen a lot of the pictures in years. After the initial shock, the adult felt pretty indifferent toward the pictures. Even looking at the blue faces he showed as a young adult, adolescent, and preteen, small child.

But, one of the last pictures they saw awakened something in them. It was them definitely, but completely different. There was a big toothy smile adorned on the child, there was so much pride, and personality. And right there, on the left side of their shirt was the rainbow keychain.

Suddenly, the adult shakily stood up, and their vision filled with vibrant images.

The pictures played through their mind, but they were different. The images that were once depressing, and dark are now happy, and bright. In the earlier images during grade school they still had that rainbow keychain. But it changed, a cloud keychain, a heart key chain, it would shift with the images. Up to the most recent image, they were happy, and wearing a pin.

The adult started to feel their chest go up and down as their breath increased, and their heart pounded. The world spinned as their eyes filled with tears, and they collapsed to their knees. Everything around the adult fades.

Komaru started to clap while Toko gave her a side eye, and lifted up the projector screen.

“Well, children! Let's discuss this short film by our own Ryota, and then you are dismissed from Japanese class today.”

Ryota’s was about how self-expression was a key to unlocking a happy, and healthy society. Without it, people will be depressed, and hide themselves away to avoid being ridiculed. And that will lead to individual breakdowns, and it can be assumed that as the years pass that will lead to a societal breakdown.

“That character was kinda weak…So they got yelled at one time. Big damn deal!” Masaru exclaims with a puffed up chest. Nagisa was the first to admonish the red harried boy for his brashness. “Masaru, stop being insensitive! You just don’t take the time, and energy to understand the nuances of this world.” To that Masaru rolled his eyes, but they weren’t through with him yet.

“Yeah, Masaru? What’s wrong with you? You're such an idiot! Clearly the kid just wanted to be himself!” Kotoko tagged off of Nagisa, who nodded his head approvingly at what Kotoko was saying, “How would you feel if you weren’t able to run, or do any other sports anymore because people hated it?”

Masaru, who was nervously laughing, and rubbing the back of his head started backing away, “Oh my god…You guys took that seriously. I mean you guys can side with the wuss if you want-” Masaru only dug himself into a deeper hole with that line.

“Masaru! That person was not a wuss!” Kotoko’s voice raised as she became more heated with Masarus' obtuseness, “You just can’t wrap your head around, so you choose to insult them. That is not kind Masaru…” Nagisa finished with a solemn look, and a calm voice.

Masaru, no longer in a joking mood, gave one last response, “Okay, Okay, geez. I didn’t mean to upset you guys. Let’s just get ready for music class.” With some side eyes the three let the quarrel go. After doing a couple things during the passing period they made their way to the outside of the child center, which is where music classes were held.

Ibuki and Kaede were there with a bunch of pianos. It was piano week this time. In the class they’ve decided to dedicate each week to a different musical instrument, and it would rotate once they reached the end of the instrument list.

They were all fairly well at playing the piano, and no one complained about a horrible noise at this point, which was great. There was little more that anyone else could ask for from either this class, or the kids Japanese class. They were all excelling. This experience was actually reminding the kids of their time in the troublemakers class. Except this time they weren’t blamed for being abused, and they actually had fun.

Far sooner than anyone had thought, the class was over. There wasn’t going to be much to do before lunch, so everyone hung around the child center. They sat around for a while, but then Masaru brought them all together to talk. The red haired boy walked them to the back of the center, as if to hide. Everyone asked what he wanted, but he insisted on waiting until they got to the secret place. Then sat in silence for a bit more.

After they were all seated the boy took some deep breaths, “Sooo, how are we going to catch them?” Masaru raised his eyebrows smugly as Nagisa raised his own eyebrows in disbelief. When will this kid learn to quit?

“No Masaru! We are not doing that again. Those rabbits obviously don’t want to be catched so we should let them be.” Nagisa tried to avoid raising his voice, but he was still tired from his early morning escapades, and would not allow for it to happen again.

“Yes they do want to be catched, everybody wants a home!” Masaru on the other hand felt the same, those bunnies would not have to suffer in the wilderness any longer. They could be pets.

“No Masaru! NO means NO! We will not help you with this foolishness…” Nagisa turned to walk away, and gestured for the other three children to follow him. But when he turned he saw that all of the other kids were standing awkwardly with slight scowls on their faces. He looked at all of them expectantly, but not one of them had budged.

“We aren’t going to go with you if you insist on being our boss!” Kotoko’s voice was low and serious as she glared at Nagisa who looked too stunned to speak.

“So you would rather stay with Masaru to catch bunnies?” The boy was almost screeching at them, his face becoming redder by the second.

“I never said that. It’s just that you’re trying to boss us around, and it isn’t fun being around someone who is constantly trying to control you just because they think they know what’s best for you.” Kotoko crossed her arms across her chest, and looked Nagisa up, and down before walking in the opposite direction of the blue-haired boy. Jataro slowly followed her, not really knowing what to do.

So it was just Masaru, Nagisa, and Monaca standing awkwardly, blue, red, and green. The primary colors of light. The two boys glared at each other in a huff, and Monaca’s heart raced with nervousness as she stared between the two. She needed to help them get along.

“Nagisa…Don’t feel bad. They're just a little annoyed.” The girl immediately cringed. WHat the hell was she doing trying to comfort Nagisa? She had no right trying to make it seem like she was good. She just patted his shoulder before doing the same to Masaru. Then she started in the direction that Kotoko, and Jataro went.

“Monaca. Will you help me catch the bunnies?” She looked back at the red haired boy. He had his little lips pursed out in his typical pout, and batted his big blue eyes at her. He looked pathetic in Monaca eyes, pouting to get his way with another kid. But she could tell he was genuinely asking. What did she have to lose?

The pair were just about to get some supplies when Nagisa called to them, “Guys! Come on! Maki wants us all to go to the dining hall for lunch right now!” The boy's voice was dripping with an attitude. But the two just started walking towards him.

Once they reached Nagisa they saw he was tapping his foot with his hands on his hips like a disappointed mother. But they tried not to pay him any attention. “How could you guys forget?!” His voice was sharp and stern, and that pissed Masaru off.

“Listen Nagisa, You're not our babysitter anymore, you don’t have to scold us, and act like you're so mature.”

And the arguing between the two boys went on until they reached the dining hall, with Monaca following glumly behind them. Kotoko, and Jataro were standing outside with Maki. she stared at the boys with slitted eyes. Then glanced behind them at the downtrodden Monaca.
“C’mon guys. Lunch today is beef yakisoba. Let's get some before it gets cold.” She tried to diffuse whatever issues she saw, and it worked well enough as Masaru and Nagisa just rushed to get some lunch. Monaca wasn’t as eager to get in line. She dragged her feet, and looked down as she followed the other kids slowly. Of course, Maki takes notice.

“What’s going on Monaca? Are you upset because the boys were arguing?” that was part of it, it was mostly that she still felt out of place. It’s been more than a month and she still can’t talk to any of the kids in just the right way. She really wanted to just divulge all of this onto Maki so that she could make everything right, but her mind fought against it, and in the end it won. So instead, Monaca just shook her head, and told a white lie, “I’m just tired.”

Maki had a hunch that Monaca was just trying to let the situation go, and she didn’t want to pressure her too much. So she just wrapped an arm around her shoulders, and they got Yakisoba.

Once they finished lunch they had to change into their painting clothes, which Jataro loved. He found them much more comfortable than his daily clothes.

And this was a centerwide activity. So almost everyone was coming to the common area. Monaca liked art quite a bit, and would actually bond with Jataro through art. She especially loved clay. You can make anything, and the best part, it can be 3D! It is such a great way to express oneself.

They arrived at the grassy area where Afternoon of Art was held, and there was an array of tarps everywhere. Monaca typically sat on the outskirts, and did just that today. Her already present smile grew as Nagito took his signature spot right next to her.

“Monaca! How was class?” No matter how many times they did this Nagito was always excited to see her, and was genuinely curious as to how her day was. It was such a comforting part of her routine.

She filled him in on the poem, and on how great she played on the piano, and also the sad video about the person with the pin. And Nagito’s smile never left his face. Soon Miss Angie came out with Kirumi, and Kokichi all three with wagons full of paint bottles, and tubs of clay.

The three went around handing each person their preference, and Monaca waited patiently. She couldn’t wait to get her hands on that clay. As they were handing the supplies out, Maki came up to her.

“Hey, do you want to come sit on the tarp with me, and the other kids?” This was a pretty straight forward attempt to get Monaca to spend more quality time with anyone other than Nagito, but the little girl held strong and shook her head. Slowly, and respectfully. Maybe next week.

Eventually, the three made their way over to Monaca.

“HoHo! Paint, or clay Monaca? Of course I think I know the answer.” Angie greets with her wide smile, and gestures to the wagons. Monaca answers in one word, “Clay.”

And what follows after is a short moment of panic as clay was nowhere to be seen on any of the carts. Monaca was trying her best to remain calm and trying to think of a solution, while Angie, and Kirumi looked frantically across all three carts. And then all of their eyes fall on one subject.

Kokichi stood with his hands behind his back, a wild grin across his face only compliments his even wilder eyes. They all look him up and down. He just continues to stare at them.

“Kokichi? Before we came here there was lots of clay in your wagon. So?” Kokichi looked like he was about to burst. Whether it was from joy, excitement, insanity, who knows? He only had three words to say.

“It’s a lie!” And he burst out laughing like he had just witnessed the funniest thing on earth, the people around him were much less amused. Suddenly he reached past piles of paint to reveal a small clay tub, and he handed it to Monaca who looked shocked and annoyed.

If anyone belonged in the Cub House, it was Kokichi.

Once Monaca got her clay Kokichi was taken a bit away and scolded horribly. That a simple reprimand will end Kokichi’s ways. But it chipped away at the ice. He laughed and rubbed the back of his head awkwardly, like it was all some prank that nobody got. Of course it wasn’t that serious, but it was upsetting for them, and Kokichi needs to learn to be considerate of other people's feelings.

Monaca wasn’t upset after she got her clay, she just dug right into the tub. First she made a duck, it will go great with her growing collection of ducks. Then she made a frog. Could frogs, and ducks be friends? Who cares! She’d make them get along anyway.

Throughout Afternoon of Art, Angie would check in on people, and compliment their work. It was never about being correct in Angies eyes, or the center's eyes. It was a way for there to be an outlet. And to continue the act of fun creativity. And it ended all too quickly.

“Yahahaha! All right everyone! I hope you’ve all had a wonderful afternoon of art! It is time to clean up!” Angie’s voice broke through the crowd. Monaca’s face fell slightly, but she pressed forward. At least there will be another Afternoon of Art next Tuesday.

Now free time has arrived. Monaca suggested that she and Nagito play poker in his cabin. But that idea was shot down pretty quickly.

“I’m so sorry Monaca, but I actually have a meeting with Rantaro right now. Maybe after dinner.” Nagito tried to be as soft as possible, but that didn’t stop Monacas eyes to droop, and her heart to sink a little. She wanted to cry, but that would achieve nothing but embarrassment, and make Nagito feel a little bad, and Awkward. They could play after dinner, that was fine. SO Monaca put on a smile, “It’s okay.”

Nagito smiled at the girl before walking towards his cabin. Leaving Monaca to her own devices. She still hasn’t gotten the hang of freetime. Normally, she ends up going back to the cabin to read or something, or she works on robots in the child center. But it still felt weird. Maybe she could practice her french.

So, Monaca decided that she should brush up on her french. As she walked to the Cub house her way was blocked by Masaru.

“Sooo…” he raised his eyebrows expectantly, “do you have any recommendations on how to catch these bunnies.” the boy put on an impeach smile before grabbing Monaca’s hand, and walking towards their cabin. Frankly, she completely forgot that she agreed to help Masaru with his bunny task, and she wasn’t really looking forward to it now. But she did make a promise. And maybe it would be an interesting experience.

They arrived in the cabin, and Masaru dragged Monaca into the boys room. She never spent much time there, but it was a little similar to her and Kotoko’s room. There were three beds, on the three walls that wasn’t the wall with the door. A noticeably messy, unmade bed that had some clothes, and a plush ball on it. It was adorned with red bedding, there were dressers, and a wardrobe. As well as a red bean bag.

On another wall was a bed with a blue blanket. It was sharply made, and there was just a single owl plushie. There was also a wardrobe, a dresser, and a desk that had stacks of books on it.

The bed had a yellow blanket. The person who made it tried their best. There was an apron that had bright paint stains all over it. There was also a dresser, and a little stool with a soft seat.

Monaca could easily tell whose was whose. But that wasn’t the point of this visit to their room, and Masaru made that clear.

“So. I have nets, and I have some burlap sacks. But I think they might hurt the bunnies, so we are not going to use them.” Masaru shoved a net into Monaca’s hand before dragging her right out of the cabin. He started running, and Monaca had no choice but to run after him. Eventually they reached the edge of the center, the forest, that they are not allowed to enter.

“Masaru. We can’t go into the forest.” But Masaru just shook his head before trying to act like he was a stealthy spy. Monaca didn’t want to look silly so she just looked around, no bunnies. She started more intently. And still no bunnies.

“Masaru, there are no bunnies here.” but he just continued to pretend to be a spy. Monaca stood like she was for a couple more minutes, but then she was bored. She sat under a nearby tree. And Masaru ended up shimmying on his tummy through the grass.

“I don’t think any bunnies are going to come.” Monaca’s voice drawled on as the boredom overcame her, and sleepiness took over her body. She wouldn’t last much longer, but Masaru was still going strong paroling the area they were in absolutely sure the bunnies would appear at any time.

“Monaca.” Masaru’s sharp whisper made Monaca’s eyes open in a flash, she'd already fallen asleep, and he was still at it. “Monaca. Do not move a muscle…And do not make a sound.” It was then that Monaca felt a presence near her head. She became stiff. She rolled her eyes up to see a teeny Tiny little bunny sniffing its nose right above her.

Without thinking she bolted up in sudden shock. The bunny looked up at her for a second before hopping a ways away.

“Dammit! Monaca, I said don’t move.” Masaru was a little harsh, but Monaca didn’t mind, and instead jumped to her feet, brandishing the net, and started tip-toeing. Towards the bunny.

There was that bunny. Then another bunny rushed through Monaca’s legs, and another bolted around Masaru. An excited squeal emanated from the boy as he put an even more serious game face on, and lifted up his net.

Those bunnies were fast. But were they fast enough to out hop a couple of eager kids. Yep.

“Masaru! These bunnies really don’t wanna be caught.” Monaca pants in between words as she looked at the tireless animals. It was like they were taunting them. And Masaru took notice, as his own breath was becoming labored as the former lil’ ultimate P.E. “Yeah maybe.”

The two were about to call it a day before they heard something akin to a battle cry. They looked for the source of the sound, and they were greeted by Kotoko who was hurtling toward a bunny.

Seeing Kotoko re energized the two other kids who started giving their own battle cries as they chased the fast bunnies all over the place.

A few minutes later they all spotted Jataro who awkwardly stood near them. And Kotoko was the one to take initiative, “Come one Jataro, there are enough bunnies for everyone!” The boy gave a dopey smile before imitating the other kids, and acting like a hyperactive spy.

The next 15 minutes went by in a flash. In a flash of children and bunnies that is. It was like the harder the kids tried to catch the bunnies, the quicker the bunnies got, and then the harder the kids tried to catch them. It was an endless cycle. Even still, all of the kids were having so much fun running and screaming, trying to catch some adorable bunnies. Almost all of the kids anyways.

“What is happening?” The kids all stopped once they heard the shocked voice of Nagisa. They knew how much he was against catching the bunnies. And here they all were, having fun catching bunnies without him.

The blue haired boy looked down at the ground, his mouth down turned, almost into a pout.

“What’s up Nagisa?” Kotoko looked at him with an innocent smile, and curious eyes.

“Well. I was just wondering where everyone was, soo…” he pressed his pointer fingers together and almost glared a hole into the ground with the way he was starting.

“Well. There are a lot of bunnies. And right now, only four of us to chase them. Maybe you could…” Masaru gave him an opening to join them, but Nagisa was still feeling hesitant. So Masaru stood up, and handed him his net.

Now there were five children running, jumping, and yelling trying to catch some wayward bunnies. They felt like they were chasing them for hours, it was so much fun, but oh so tiring. By now they were covered in dirt, and grass residue all over.

Suddenly there was a shout!

“I got it! I got one!” It was Masaru. Everyone stopped dead in their tracks to look at him, and sure enough he was struggling with a huge bunny. It certainly did not want to be in Masaru’s arms.

All of the other kids rushed over, almost trampling each other to get a look at it.

“Awe! He’s so cute!” Kotoko gushes.

“How do we know it’s a he?” Nagisa questions while looking at it diligently. And Kotoko rolled her eyes at his meticulousness. Always needing to be exact about everything.

“There you all are!” The familiar voice of Maki makes all of the kids jump. Including Masaru. And that gave the bunny an opportunity to wiggle out of its arms, and hop right back into the woods. Leaving all the kids to do nothing but groan.

“Was that a rabbit?” Maki looked amazed, but quickly refocused. “We can talk about that later. Right now, it’s dinner. And then straight into a bath, all of you are incredibly dirty.”

Dinner was fine. Today it was some udon noodles. Nothing to smile, or frown about. Everyone ate it, and ended with a satisfied tummy. So, with that done Maki went right to the Warriors of Hope.

“Come on, it’s bath time for all of you.”

As the six of them walked to the Cub house, Nagito approached them. He smiled brightly before addressing Maki.

“Hi Maki! Can I talk to Monaca for a bit?” He lightly asked, and Maki nodded and gave him a knowing smile before continuing to walk with the rest of the children.

Nagito took Monaca and sat in the grass with her.

“Monaca. Do you know how I’m sick? And I’ve been sick for a long time?” Monaca nods at the question with a curious face. That was one of the most obvious things about him, you could tell immediately from looking at his sunken face.

“Well. With my sickness, I am in a very volatile state where I can get very sick, and maybe even die. And it’s pretty hard for me.” Nagito grabbed Monaca’s hand. Him and Rantaro had a discussion about building trust, and connection. And having hard talks about life, and death were one of the ways to do that.

So he continued to talk about how hard things have been for him, and encouraged Monaca to also give in the conversation by asking her relatable questions. And Monaca was actually pretty engaged. But she was lost on what Nagito was trying to say.

“So. Since I am here at this place with a lot of great resources I am able to get treatment to help me. So I’m going to get an operation at a hospital.” Nagito smiled widely, and it juxtaposed Monaca’s confused frown.

Chapter 5: But Who Will Protect Me?

Summary:

Nagito is going to get treated for his illness...

Chapter Text

At the time, Monaca was pretty okay with everything. Nagito was going to the hospital so that he could get treated, and would stop feeling horrible, and being on the brink of death. This was pretty good. But the thing is, Nagito didn’t exactly tell her everything.

Was he going to the hospital to try and get better? Yes. Was this going to take more than a week to complete? Yes. Was this operation life threatening? Potentially. There were a lot of things that Monaca could worry about. Of course she was nervous, but it was not really anything to freak out over. At least based on what she knew.

Eventually, Monaca found out that he was going to be leaving the center for a week, and that she could not go with him. And she was none too pleased by that.

“Why can’t Monaca?” Monaca sat with Nagito inside their room. There was no one else there, which was favorable. Monaca was making strides. A little while ago she would have been shaking her fist, and screeching if she knew she wasn’t getting what she wanted.

Nagito would be leaving tomorrow so he needed to tell her the entire truth, and now she is voicing her complaints. Of course she would have to stay at the center where she could have supervision. At a hospital where someone is receiving life saving treatment will not provide that. It is just going to be Mikan, Byakuya, and Nekomaru. And they all have different tasks to play.

That wasn’t going to stop Monaca from making her case as to why she would go.

“Monaca’s responsible enough to look after herself while I’m there.” Monaca puts on a strong, and assured voice, but there is nothing that Nagito can say besides “no, that’s not an option”.

The arguing went on until dinner time. But Monaca was not going to let it go just because the two of them were separated for a time. As soon as dinner was over she went right back to arguing with him, and she did so until 8:30 when she needed to go back to the Cub House.

This was horrible for Monaca. Nagito was her only connection in this place. If he left she was stranded by herself. Of course things were getting better, but that doesn’t mean that this situation wouldn’t turn horribly for her at any minute.

Monaca’s emotions were not lost to Maki, so as she was doing her nightly routine she started a conversation with her.

“Hey Monaca…” The child caregiver started slowly as she caressed the girl's arm exposed over the blanket. “I know you're feeling upset about Nagito leaving, and all. And that’s okay.” Monaca’s eyebrows furrowed in a way that showed anxiety. Maki pressed on regardless, “And I just want you to know that…You're safe here. Everyone here wants to protect you, and help you. So I hope you know that you don’t have to worry about that.”

Monaca didn’t respond, instead she just nodded her head once before looking at the wall instead of directly into Maki’s big red eyes.

Maki knew that that couldn't be the end of it. She knew that Monaca was feeling insecure and that those feelings were definitely going to boil over at some point, so she had to be prepared, no matter what Monaca did to try to hide her feelings, or push them deep down inside.

Tomorrow came, and it went better than Maki was expecting.

The car that held Mikan, Nekomaru, and Byakuya was waiting at the front of the center for Nagito, and then it would be on its way to the hospital.

Nagito got a few steps away from his cabin before there was a little tug on his jacket sleeve. When he looked down he stared right into those great big green eyes of Monaca’s. They were just screaming, “If you leave without me, I'll cry my heart out…”

It took a few moments for monaca’s words to form.

“Please…Please just tell them it’s okay…” Her voice was so quiet that Nagito could only hear certain parts of every word she said. But he understood her. She didn’t want him to leave. At least, not without her. But they both knew what Nagiot would say.

“That’s not an option Monaca…I’ll be back in a week. When you plan out everything you’re gonna do–you won’t notice time at all…” The white haired boy couldn’t ignore her feelings. while talking he wrapped his arms around her and picked her up.

They stayed like that for a minute, until Nagito noticed Maki, Komaru, and Toko moving towards them. He placed a teary eyed Monaca down, and waved to the three older women.

“Bye Monaca!” He gave a great big smile to the girl. Before she could react, he grabbed his bags, and started to run to the car.

Monaca didn’t have anything to say as she watched the one person she felt the most comfortable with run away from her, leaving her behind. Her brain was buffering trying to wrap her head around that fact. As her brain was trying to process this information she didn’t notice the three women coming up behind her.

Maki, Komaru, and Toko shared glances with each other; they didn’t know whether or not they should try and comfort her, leave her alone, or what. It was Tuesday, and the children had class, including Monaca. But maybe they shouldn’t make the girl attend. Soon their eyes were all on Monaca as she fell to her knees.

It was in fact 4:30 in the morning. The morning tiredness she had, on top of the current pressing situation of Nagito leaving, was too much for her body to bear. She couldn’t stand up straight anymore.

Monaca scrunched up her face as the tears threatened to spill. It was horrible. How has she become so weak?

“Monaca,” Maki began, “Maybe we should go back to your room, and you can rest for a little bit.” Maki crouched, trying to make eye contact with the younger girl, to no avail. But suddenly, Monaca wrapped her arms around Maki and tears freely, and silently flowed down her red cheeks.

So Maki pulled the girl up, and held her–gently cradling her head, “It’s fine Monaca. It’s completely fine. Nagito’s going to be back very soon.” The long haired girl was trying to comfort Monaca, but when she stopped talking Monaca only started shaking in her arms. But she did lay her head against Maki’s shoulder.

Maki gave Komaru, and Toko a look that said, “I got it, you two can go”, and so they did.

The thing is. No matter how much Monaca wanted to not care, she couldn’t. She was a human with feelings, and a child. That has always been her issue. Why things don’t go 100 percent. She couldn;t turn off the absolute sadness that came whenever her brother, and father were mean, that absolute depression that made her want to die.

She couldn’t completely give up her hope, that's why in the end she failed at making Komaru Junko’s successor, she herself couldn’t become her successor, and then she couldn’t even stay in space and turn off her brain like she planned.

She couldn’t not feel sad, and scared at the fact that Nagito left her alone at this place. No matter how much she told herself she didn’t care. And no matter how hard she tried to turn off those horrible emotions.

As Toko and Komaru made their way back to the Whale House, which they shared with Maki, and Mikan (who was going to the hospital with Nagito and the others) they couldn’t help but speculate about Monaca.

Of course, they encountered her twice before. Once during the killing game in Towa city, and once again while trying to look for answers of the Future Foundation killing game. And she showed such Odd, Aloof, and vicious behavior. But now, at the center, they see a different side of her.

“Of course, we can’t know, and it might be wrong to speculate, “ Toko began with a hesitant tone, “But can her, not only behavior, but her entire psyche, be fixed just by being at this center? I-I mean, her state is caused by both nature and Nurture, but it also seems deeply rooted in her personality…”

No one can 100 percent know everything about Monaca’s past, and the thoughts that go through her head, and the way that her brain works. Not even her.

Chapter 6: You Don’t Need Me Anymore

Summary:

Nagito finally returns from the hospital!

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

For the whole week that followed it was pretty much the same. Not that it being the same was good. Monaca practically outright refused to talk to anyone. She barely ate anything. And she was all around slower in everything.

“Monaca, Time To get up!”

She would remain in bed for 5 minutes, and sit up in bed for 10 minutes before getting out of bed.

“Monaca, eat your curry please.”

Blank stares for miles.

“Monaca, we just want to make you, and everyone else happy…”

Of course, this was just said on the inside. But they didn’t know how to convey this message to Monaca while Nagito was gone.

But now, Nagito should be returning after spending a whole 7 days away. It was a Wednesday, meaning Monaca had classes, and Nagito would be returning after lunch. So enrichment school would be able to distract her while she waited. Thankfully, this short distressing time for Monaca would be coming to a close.

You’d think Monaca would be absolutely anxious throughout the day, but instead she just continued to walk with her head down, Ignoring the world around her. Even in science she just seemed lifeless. In art, she just sat in the corner. She was offered paint, wood, and her absolute favorite, clay. Even the ever infectiously joyous Angie couldn’t wake the girl up.

Lunch was Takoyaki, and rice. At the Cub’s table, one plate was left to get cold and hard, and surely you can guess who decided to go hungry.

Finally, the time came for Nagito to return. Rantaro, Ghudahm, and Imposter rushed to the front of the center. They were eager to see their roommate again, no matter how cracked the white-haired boy was. The rest of the 77th class rushed to join them with ranges of happy trepidation, and eager excitement. The rest of the center followed suit. Mostly…

The moment came, Nagito emerged, and claps, and cheers could be heard across the entire center.

Kazuichi, and Nekomaru ran towards him laughing heartily! “Hey man! How were you? They weren’t starving you right?!” Nekomaru gave him a heavy handed pat on the shoulder. Kazuichi feigned tears, and gave Nagito a big hug. The whole scene probably looked pretty silly to everyone else, but it was endearing.

Maki was with the kids, “Hey Maki,” Masaru started with a quizzical face, “So…Was Nagito entirely cured, or will it take more visits? Will he need more treatment?” Of course this was volatile. No one could tell what would happen in the next 10 years, the next year, the next week, or even the next day. But Maki wasn;t going to tell the kids that.

“Well, he should be, from now on.” That was all she could say. Even if she could, or wanted to say more, something more pressing was brought to her attention. As she looked around she noticed one green-haired little girl was nowhere to be seen.

She counted the heads of those around her. Blue haired boy, yes! Pink haired girl, yes! Blonde boy, yes! Red haired boy, yes! Green haired girl, no! This isn’t immediately a huge issue. Just something odd that Maki needed to fix. Monaca of all people would be one of the first to run up to Nagito.

Thankfully, Aoi was right next to Maki. “Her Hina.” The long-haired girl began as she moved closer to Aoi, “Could you watch these four while I go see where Monaca is?” her hands were in prayer position as she awaited the swimmer's response.

“Yeah, of course! Is something wrong?” Aoi’s eyebrows furrowed with concern, but Maki shook her head assuredly, “I’m just gonna get her real quick.”

Monaca was a ways away from the lake. She was close enough that she could see a bit of it, but also close enough to the front that she could hear what was happening a little. Her back was pressed up against the tree, and she just closed her eyes hoping to drift away.

This was all just going to hurt her far too much.

But Monaca couldn’t keep herself from getting a bit closer to what was happening, just to catch a glimpse. She hid behind a pretty big tree to remain unseen.

As she looked she saw a smiling Nagito, and people dispersing away from him. The excitement was dying down. But she also noticed the other four children, all crowded around him. Laughing, and smiling. It was a perfect scene. And that only caused her chest to feel heavier, and heavier with sadness.

‘Huh. you don’t need me…’ her brain couldn’t stop feeling that way towards Nagito. With that, the girl turned on her heel and made her way back to where she was.

That was, until she felt someone's hand wrap around her upper arm. She hesitated to look at who grabbed her, but of course she would have to eventually. And of course, there were those piercing red eyes, and pretty long hair.

“Monaca, where were you? Nagito’s back, y’know?!” The older girl gave a big smile, trying to get Monaca to smile back. But to no avail. She just stared back with little expression.

Maki made a comment about going to see Nagito, and then started to gently drag Monaca to the area where everyone else was. But she was met with a great struggle.

“Do you not want to greet Nagito?” Maki tried to have a neutral tone, she noticed Monaca’s face getting tinged with red as it scrunched up. There was no answer from the girl, so Maki took her behavior at face value.

“What do you want to do? Can you tell me?” She sat in the cool grass, and gestured for Monaca to do the same.

They proceeded to talk for a while about why Monaca didn’t feel comfortable meeting Nagito. There were times where Monaca just broke down, and she told Maki that she just overall felt like she was going to lose Nagito after this.

“Monaca. I know that this can’t put a perfect bandage on your feelings, but I just want you to hear. You don;t have to worry about being out of place, or “Unneeded”, or anything like that at all. We’re all just trying to make this work. No one is going to try to get rid of you, replace you, anything Monaca.” Maki held onto the little girl's hand.

“You, me, everyone! We’re all just trying to get through this. Everyone is a necessary piece of the puzzle. We are all needed.”

Chapter Text

“Hey Jataro? Do you wanna do face painting together now?” Monaca shouted to Jataro who was a ways away. The little artist's face lit up as he started sprinting towards the green haired girl. But Jataro stopped mid sprint, and both the kids' attention was drawn to someone else.

“Hey!” Kotoko shouted with feigned hurt, “So you're just not going to invite us!” She gestured to Masaru, and Nagisa one with a fake pout and the other with crossed arms. So they rushed over to Monaca after joining Jataro half way. The group of kids eagerly headed over to Angies face painting station.

“Yahahah! So! So! What do you want! Your imagination is the limit! And I know all of you have great big imaginations!” The white haired girl allowed all of them to choose very specific, and abstract things to be painted on their face.

“I want to be a famous athlete who won 20 championships!” Masaru shouted proudly.

“Maybeeee! I wanna be a tree that has lived for a 20 thousand years, and has been painted by 50 thousand sad painters…” Jataro’s slow voice fluctuated with burst of hesitation, and inspiration.

“I know I should be decisive…And I am! I’m going to be a brave, strong, and awesome knight who has just saved the most beautiful princess who is the love of her life!” Kotoko smiled large, and bright while giving her fantastical ideas.

“All of these silly ideas. Mines’ is simple. I want to be one of the pillars of the renaissance, A father of the modern world. Whichever one you want is fine. Just don’t make it too cartoonish, but give it charm.” Nagisa spoke calmly, but showed his eagerness as he continued to talk.

Monaca was the last one to get her face painted. She had spent the entire time thinking deeply about what she would want to show everyone else. How could she impress them?

“Monaca wants…To be a caterpillar. I want to be a caterpillar that is still young, but they know that when they grow up they will be the best, beautifulest, kindest butterfly of their time. they’re young, and imperfect, but are still full of potential. And they're green.” Monaca held her breath waiting to see Angie's reaction. It was similar to her last four reactions.

“Your mind fills me with joy!”

Of course, Angie loved to be challenged with portraying these abstract things that don’t exactly make sense, and cannot be pushed into a single still image easily. But that was her talent as the ultimate artist. She did it marvelously.

“WOw!” Angie made sure that the children's praise didn’t go to her head, an artist must remain humble to some degree.

The cool august night went on on this Wednesday Community Day, and the children were having great amounts of fun. Just like everyone else. It was also time for comedy. So they made their way to the amphitheater to watch Hiro’s Clairvoyance show, Himiko’s Magic show, Hiyoko’s traditional dance concert, and Tsumugi’s fashion show.

Nagisa was invited to come up and disprove Yasuhiro’s fortune telling, and completely attacked the logic behind his crystal ball. Of course it was easier since his last crystal broke, and all of his previous fortune telling turned out only 30% correct. And what was correct about a prediction was just random crap for the most part. Everyone still cheered for both Nagisa and Hiro.

Masaru went up during Himiko’s magic show to get cut in half. It was pretty shocking to the crowd when he started screaming his head off during it. But it was quickly revealed he was just pretending once Himiko finished.

Kotoko Eagerly volunteered when Hiyoko went up, and she sang a sweet song that wasn’t traditional, but was still nice, and Hiyoko danced great. It was a touching scene as the sound resonated with everyone, and Hiyoko moved with such an air of beauty.

To end, Monaca, and Jataro were able to put together an outfit and be two of the models in Tsumugi’s fashion show. Everyone cheered so hard when they came on. Of course they looked silly in mismatched and oversized clothes, but it was adorable, and they strutted their stuff. When they finished, Tsumugi gave both of them a chocolate bar, as well as their other three friends.

And with that, the night was coming to a close, they had some snacks, courtesy of Kirumi, and TeruTeru. The kids were tuckered out, sitting on a bench together talking about their favorite things. They talk, and talk, and talk right up until Maki comes up to them.

“How was your guys’ night?” She inquired with a sweet smile. They all talk over each other saying how great it was until Maki interrupted. “That’s great! But It is time for you all to go to bed…”

Inside the Cub House, the regular nightly routine ensued.

Masaru whined loudly, “Can’t I just go to sleep with it. I love it!” Inside the bathroom Maki was coaxing him into washing off the face paint, but he was pretty argumentative. Eventually he gave in, but not without getting a scolding for being too difficult.

That night, in bed Monaca couldn't help but think about her life. Here she was, at this great center. Her life started as an illegitimate child to a man who hated her, and her disgusting brother. Like so many, her life was changed by Junko Enoshima, and now she gets a second chance at life. Honestly, absolutely all of this was mind boggling.

Just as soon as she finished her thought Maki walked from Kotoko’s bed to hers.

“So, how was your day Monaca?” the older girl petted the younger one's green hair as they talked. Monaca expressed how great it was before falling deafeningly silent.

“Sometimes, I wonder why I’m here, at this center. Or why I’m still alive after all of this.” Monaca spoke quietly, she was barely audible to Maki who was right by her. But what she said didn’t slip past Maki.

The two of them just sat in silence as Maki thought of how to respond to that open statement. It’s hard to think of responses that are reasonable, but also help someone feel better. But Maki decided to go with short, and sweet.

“Lots of things in life don’t make sense, and that can be both a pro and a con. Because it hurts not knowing why some things turn out the way they do. But on the other hand, you try to find the reason for some of the things that don’t make sense right.” Monaca could see through the hollow words. But sometimes the hollow words are just what you need to sleep comfortably. At least for one night.

To end the routine, Maki gave Monaca a kiss on the temple. A new thing. There are lots of new things in Monaca’s life. New beginnings, new endings. Life for her would be full of crossroads. She has a choice of where to go from here.
