Work Text:
It was as if she was his shadow.
From that memorable afternoon, after she handed him that box of cupcakes, she was always quick to find him again. When he casually walked through the street, he could hear her happy voice, screaming different things to get his attention. She kept on buying him different sweets and she was so persistent about it, that he wasn't able to reject her. Even if he told her countless of times to piss off, leave him alone or just go away, it didn't seem to affect her. It seemed to even bring her closer to him, which annoyed him so bad.
He was sure that she had some wicked plans behind that sweet smile. There wasn't another explanation. Why would she do all those nice things to a random person that she met only two weeks ago? Why would she spend money on that person, not thinking much about it? Why would she still smile, talking happily about everything, while he acted as if she wasn't even there? Why, why, why?
"Well, I just wanted to be your friend!", she said after a week of their first interaction.
Kanata still remembers how he looked at her with annoyed expression, while scoffing. Such a dumb excuse. Why would he even believe something like that? A random girl wanting to be his friend? Bullshit. He couldn't trust her. He couldn't trust anyone besides his twin brother. Other people weren't needed – that's what he and his brother always said. As long as they had each other, everything was perfectly fine. Acting as if everyone else was their enemy, they never really interacted with other people for a long time. They avoided such things, finding them to be a nuisance.
Why would he even accept her as his friend? She appeared so suddenly, literally forcing him to take the cupcakes, while running away and screaming her name. Until he realized what happened, she already disappeared, making him stand alone, confused about the whole situation. Well, since she already gave him the cupcakes, there was no way he would just throw them away. He was grateful, because the smile Nayuta sent him when he saw the cupcakes, made him really happy himself. But just a bit grateful. Little bit. He never even expected to see her again and was hoping that would never happen. The next day, though, she was quick to find him again.
Perhaps it was his fault. He didn't have to follow the same path as yesterday, but he did. Why? Even he didn't know. He remembers how she suddenly ran out of the bakery as soon as she saw him. She held two cupcakes in her hands, this time chocolate-flavored. At first he pretended he didn't see her, but her constant shouting of strange names and constant jumping around him finally made him stop. He tried to brush her off. He really did, but it was just impossible. They ended up sitting on one of the benches, as he quietly ate his cupcake, turning his head away from her, having an annoyed expression on his face. She kept talking about something, but he just didn't listen at all. He thought that she would leave if he didn't give her any attention, but she just kept on talking and talking. What was wrong with her, honestly? Didn't she see that he clearly wanted her to go away?
After that first week, he didn't see her for the next two days. He didn't care. Really. He definitely didn't stand near the bakery for three hours each day. Definitely.
His brother was quick to see that something was wrong. Kanata acted a bit more annoyed than usual. Nayuta thought it was just something that happened with his job, so when he heard from his brother's mouth that it was about a girl, he was confused. Since when did Kanata talk with anyone else? More importantly, since when did he talk with girls? It was hard for Kanata to explain this situation, but when he finally did, he remembers how Nayuta laughed. Now Kanata was the one that was confused.
"So you have a friend now", the younger brother exclaimed. "I'm glad."
Kanata definitely didn't expect him to say something like that. He thought he would be a little mad about this situation and tell him to be careful with that girl. He did quite the opposite. Why? Why would he be happy about all this? When he tried to get an answer from him, he just said that he was happy about his brother having someone to rely on. Why would he need somebody else when he already had him? Nayuta was enough for him. He didn't need anyone else. He was acting strange – was he hiding something from him? Kanata didn't have much time to think about it, because Nayuta started teasing him about this whole situation, which made him forget about his weird behavior almost immediately.
There was no way he would be friends with that girl. She was annoying, she was too happy, she was always near him, she was talking too loudly and she was too persistent. He was fed up with her.
Then why did he slightly miss her when he didn't see her for those two days?
He acted as if nothing happened when she approached him on the third day, smiling happily. At her question if he missed her, he scoffed, muttering hell no. She laughed once again, making him grimace. He still took another cupcake, though. It seemed that everything was like before her disappearance for those two days: she still talked a lot, he ate his cupcake in silence and he had his head turned away from her, not listening. The third thing was a bit questionable, as he found himself unconsciously looking at her once in a while, muttering something and nodding slightly. Every time he caught himself doing that, though, he immediately looked away, going back to his grumpy self. Why was he suddenly getting interested in her stupid life? There wasn't anything amazing in hearing about her complaints about school, about her stupid rich parents or even about her interest in fashion. She was just a rich kid and he hated those people the most in the world. Everything was going so well for her: she had a good education, had famous parents that bought her everything and was becoming famous herself with her clothes. She had a perfect life. They were from two different worlds and yet she was still invading his, as if it was normal.
Kanata knew it wasn't normal. Every single rich person he's ever met was arrogant, never did anything to help him and his brother and had fun laughing at people from the worse status than them. She never acted like this. Of course, he was convinced that she was just hiding her true self with this good image – at least at first. He didn't know when and why these thoughts came to him, but suddenly he wanted to believe she was just a good person.
He tried to brush these stupid thoughts off. He tried to convince himself that it was just his stress making him think weird things. Even then, no matter what he did, these thoughts kept appearing in his head too many times. He remembered every good thing she did for him (and for his brother, even though they never met each other) like buying an insane amount of sweets, other food and drinks (somehow she always bought too much) and also randomly giving him a huge blanket (which he didn't want to accept, but when he did: he was satisfied, as Nayuta absolutely loved it). Was she really different from all those people he's met before? Could he really tell that after two weeks of knowing her?
Kanata clicked his tongue, as he sighed in defeat. His eyes wandered off to the girl sitting right next to him, happily eating her cupcake. For a moment he just looked at her, seemingly thinking about something, as his mouth finally opened to say those words.
"Kanata", he mumbled, turning his head away.
She let out a confused sound and when he looked at her from the corner of his eye, he was able to see her blinking a few times, while tilting her head to the side.
"My name", he grumbled, unsatisfied that he had to clarify. "Yatonokami Kanata."
The way her face lit up made him immediately look away, going back to his grumpy self. Her excited voice right next to his ear made him annoyed, as his eye started twitching a little bit.
"Are we friends now?! Hey! Kanata!", she poked him in the arm several times. "Hey! Hey! Hey!"
"No way. And stop doing that", he grunted.
She laughed happily, seemingly not believing in his words – she stayed silent about this though, continuing to eat her cupcake, still with a huge smile on her face.
He sent her one more look, rolling his eyes, as he finally looked away. Why did he even do this? It's not like he treated her like a friend, or something...
The corners of Kanata's mouth suddenly turned up, forming a small smile, which he hid with a cupcake.
Damn it.
Maybe he was able to trust her.
