Dazai always liked fireworks.
They were stunning, breathtaking and ever so fleeting. They burned out in a blaze of glory bringing awe to all that witnessed them. He’d always hoped his own life would be like a firework, a wonderful spectacle ending in a glorious death.
He’s once told Atsushi “When I go, I’d like to go out just as beautifully,” as the Agency watched the fireworks together.
He meant it but he didn’t miss how dejected his mentee looked afterwards.
“We should buy some fireworks,” Dazai looked up at Chuuya from where he was resting his head on his lap. Chuuya paused in his reading to look down at Dazai.
“Why? You trying to blow yourself up again?” Chuuya asked him suspiciously. Dazai let out a chuckle. He’d tried that their first New Years together when they were fifteen.
“Not this time, maybe next year~” Dazai sang, he jumped off the sofa, Chuuya’s hand stilling from where it was stroking his hair. “Come onnnnnn~ I wanna enter the new year with a bang!”
“As long as you aren’t going bang,” Chuuya joked as he stood up and followed Dazai to the front door. They were both dressed in sweats and comfy jumpers but it wasn’t like they were planning on being out long, so they grabbed their coats and headed out.
They took Chuuya’s motorbike, Dazai used to riding it after all these years but still clung tightly to Chuuya. It would say like his life depended on it but we all know that Dazai’s life doesn’t mean much to him.
“We should get this one!” Dazai excited dumped the fireworks into the basket. “And these too!”
“Dazai… you’re going to buy the entire shop at this rate,” Chuuya gently reminded his boyfriend who knew this already but usually chose not to care until someone actually mentioned it out loud, just to be a menace.
“Ehhh~ Chuuya worries too much~” Dazai waved him off and went back to skipping around.
“You just say that because it’s my bank account that suffers,” Chuuya mumbled to himself but the smirk Dazai sent him let him know that he was heard.
Dazai dragged Chuuya outside after paying and they made they’re way to the secluded area of the ports they used to frequent a lot as dumb teenagers. There was still a couple of hours until midnight so they cuddle together to keep warm.
“This has got to be one of your dumbest ideas yet,” Chuuya told him. Dazai looked at him with a grin that meant something Chuuya would not like was about to come out.
“Even more dumb than the time I bought a tank of sharks and made you fall into it,” Dazai asked. Chuuya remembered that vividly, one moment he had been walking home, the next he was falling through a trap door and was almost eaten alive by sharks. He had not been happy afterwards.
“How about you shut your pretty mouth and keep cuddling me,” Chuuya rolled his eyes. Dazai squeezed him harder from behind.
“Chuuya thinks I’m pretty,” he nuzzled into his neck from behind. “I think Chuuya is the prettiest though,” Chuuya shivered as Dazai whispered this into his ear.
“Shut up, idiot,” Chuuya huffed and Dazai laughed knowing a shade of red painted the ginger’s cheeks, even in the dark of night Dazai always knew.
They ate crappy store bought food and watch dumb videos on Chuuya’s phone (Dazai wasn’t allowed to pick out videos anymore, not after- Chuuya doesn’t like to think about it) as they waited for midnight to arrive.
“10,” Dazai said softly.
Chuuya glanced at the time. Oh, he was right.
“9,” they said together.
“8,
7,
6,
5,
4,
3,
2,
1,
Happy new year!”
Chuuya let the fireworks go off and they watched as the colours explode in the sky.
“Happy new year, Chuuya,” Dazai repeated, before pulling Chuuya into a kiss.
“Happy new year, Osamu,” Chuuya said after they parted before connecting their lips again.
They then watched the fireworks side by side, as they have for so many years now.
